Purpose The change in climate and depletion of natural resources because of the harmful emissions from different materials becomes a main issue for the globe. Some of the developed and developing countries have focused on this issue and performed research to provide a solution. The purpose of this study is to identify the best types of concrete based on its impact on the environment and economy. Design/methodology/approach The life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis of six concrete mixtures that include construction and demolition wastes (CDW), marble sludge, rice husk and bagasse ash as a partial replacement of cement, are performed. These types of concrete are compared with each other and with ordinary concrete to select the best possible concrete type for a developing country, like Pakistan. Findings The results show that, although for an agricultural country like Pakistan, the agriculture wastes such as rice husk and bagasse ash are preferable to be used, if the emissions of CO2 and CO from rice husk and NOx and SO2 from bagasse ash are properly controlled. However, based on the results, it is recommended to use the CDW in concrete because of the small amount of air emissions and affordable prices. Originality/value Through this study, a path has been provided to construction companies and relative government organizations of Pakistan, which leads to sustainable practices in the construction industry. Moreover, the base is provided for future researchers who want to work in this area, as for Pakistan, there is no database available that helps to identify the impact of different concrete on the environment.

Production of rice husk in Central Java province is around 2,825,000 tonnes annually. It can be used as an alternative energy source to substitute coal in combustion during cement production. This study was conducted to determine the impact of rice husk as a substitute energy source in cement production. The observations of rice husk comprised calorimetric tests, physical and chemical tests, and percentage rice husk substitution for coal as firing energy. The chemical properties of the cement tested include the chemical content, MgO and SO3 contents, loss on ignition, insoluble residue, and total alkali. The results show that the chemical content of cement which is produced using rice husk as a substitute for coal in the combustion process still meets the Indonesian National Standard.

There are many studies has been done on the natural fibers of cellulose contents as a reinforcing material. Yet, the main challenge in the research of natural fiber is the poor compatibility. In this study, the surface modification techniques were performed on granular size rice husk (RH) such as untreated, boiled and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treated reinforced polypropylene (PP) was consolidated to improve the mechanical properties. An internal mixer machine is set for four different composites compositions and the samples produced by hot press machine. The specimens were analyzed by different techniques such as hardness test, impact test, tensile test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study shown that, the presence of NaOH indicates higher young modulus and hardness test value compared to boiled treated and untreated RH. While for the impact strength and tensile strength value shows untreated, boiled treated and NaOH treated PP/RH composite decreased when fiber loading increased. The morphological analysis was conducted to determine the effects of natural fiber bonding between the matrix materials after boiling and NaOH treatments for mechanical testing broken specimens.

The article presents the results of a study of the impact of vehicle emissions on populations of Aesculus hippocastanum L. growing along roads with different traffic intensities. It was found that in areas of heavy vehicle traffic there is an increased level of abortive pollen production. Plant populations increasing the formation of damaged gametes with increasing anthropogenic load on phytocoenoses can be used for phytoindication of the environmental pollution degree. In areas with heavy traffic, pollutants have an average toxic effect on the gametogenesis of Aesculus hippocastanum L. The quality and degree of damage to the pollen zone formed by plants can serve as a bio-test of the mutagenic effect of environmental factors that have a modifying effect on male gametophyte of higher plants.

Background: One of the materials for denture bases is heat-cured acrylic resin (PMMA). This material still lacks impact strength as a mechanical strength property. The addition of reinforcing material is known to increase the mechanical strength of PMMA. One of the reinforcing materials added to PMMA is nano cellulose from rice husks, one of the wastes from agricultural products. Purpose: This study aims to determine rice husk nano cellulose's addition to the PMMA denture base's impact strength. Method:  The research sample consisted of six groups, each group consisting of 8 samples selected by simple random. The PI, P2, P3, P4, P5, and K groups were PMMA with 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5% nano cellulose, and without nano cellulose. Result: Mean impact strength test results were 41.50 x 10-3 ± 3.891 J / mm2 for P1, 44.13 x 10-3 ± 3,980 J / mm2 for P2, 45.63 x 10-3 ± 4,438 J / mm2 for P3, 46.87 x 10-3 ± 4,824 J / mm2 for P4, 49.12 x 10-3 ± 4.016 J / mm2 for P5 and 36.25 x 10-3 ± 1.982 J / mm2 for K. One way Anova test results with p-value of 0.000 indicates differences in the six groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study concludes that the impact strength value of PMMA with the addition of rice husk nano cellulose has increased compared to the control group without the addition of rice husk nano cellulose.

Abstract This paper presents an investigation about acoustic absorption of mortars with partial replacement of sand by waste (plywood formwork, rice husk, and thermoplastic shoe counters), examining different levels of replacement (0%, 5%, 10%, 25%, and 50%). The measurement of acoustic absorption was performed using a plane wave impedance tube with 100 mm diameter, using mortar samples of 20 mm, in frequency range 200-2000 Hz. Results demonstrated that some composite with waste presented noise reduction coefficient (NRC) above the reference mortar (NRC = 0.0343), such as a composite with 50% rice husk (NRC = 0.2757) and other with 50% of plywood waste (NRC = 0.2052). Since there is virtually no cost or difficulty to use these residuals, it may be concluded that it is a sustainable alternative to improve the acoustic comfort and reduce the impact of the waste on the environment.

[CHLOROPHYL CONCENTRATION AND YIELD OF PAKCOY (Brassica rapa L.) AFTER TWO YEARS OF BIOCHAR AND ORGANIC FERTILIZER APPLICATION IN ENTISOLS]. While nitrogen is necessary throughout the growth of vegetable plants, N deficiency disrupts chlorophyll formation, and hence, affecting the photosynthesis process. This study aimed to study the impact of the use of biochar and organic fertilizers on chlorophyll content and yield of Pak coy mustard in the third planting season in Entisols. This research was conducted in Bawang Hamlet, Tunggulwulung Village, Malang City. The first and second planting seasons, were May-November 2017 and August 2018-January 2019, respectively. Research on the third planting season was carried out in July-August 2019 without nitrogen fertilization. The research was arranged in a randomized block design, consisting of controls (Kl), chicken manure (A), compost (K), rice husk biochar (S), rice husk biochar + chicken manure (SA), rice husk biochar + compost (SK). The results showed that after two years of application, biochar and organic fertilizers had a positive impact on the increase in yield of Pakcoy even though fertilizer was not provided. The application of biochar and compost provided the best residual effect on the total chlorophyll of Pakcoy mustard.
