Abstract Objectives Nutrient intakes of pregnant women are essential for their health and the health of their fetus. This study aims to assess the nutrient intakes of pregnant women, residing in a rural eastern Indonesia. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in two sub districts of Timor Tengah Selatan (TTS) district, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia in 2012. A total of 155 pregnant women, at all age of pregnancy, residing at least one year prior to this study in 14 villages of two sub districts KIE and Amanuban Barat involved in this study. Anthropometric data including BMI and MUAC of pregnant women were collected by trained enumerators from the department of nutrition, Health Polytechnic of Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. A validated Semi Quantitative-Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ) was used to collect the dietary intake of the last 3 months of pregnant women. Nutrisurvey was used to compute and analyze nutrient intakes of the study subjects. Statistical Analysis was performed using STATA version 15.1 MP. Results The average of energy and protein intakes in pregnant women were 1178.4 ± 449.6 kcal/day and 38.4 ± 18.7 gr/day respectively, representing to only 54.7% and 57.4% of the Indonesian nutrient requirement of energy and protein intakes for pregnant women. The average of vitamin C and iron intakes in pregnant women were 59.9 ± 40.1 mg/day and 7.7 ± 6.2 mg/day, representing to only 70.5% and 29.5% of the Indonesian nutrient requirement of vitamin C and iron intakes for pregnant women. The average energy and protein intakes among underweight pregnant women were 211.1 kcal/day (95% CI: 17.3 kcal/day - 404.9 kcal/day) lower and 8.2 gr/day (95% CI: 0.07 gr/day -16.3 gr/day) lower than among non underweight pregnant women adjusting for age of pregnant women, gestational age, and monthly household expenditure, education level, and race. Conclusions The present study suggests that pregnant women in rural Indonesian community experienced high deficit in energy, protein, vitamin C and iron intakes lead to poor nutritional status during pregnancy. Introduction: Adequate nutrition during pregnancy is a pre-requisite for good pregnancy outcomes as well as future wellbeing, development and quality of life of the unborn child. This analytical cross-sectional study evaluated the adequacy of nutrient intakes of pregnant women resident in northern Ghana. Methods: A total of 400 pregnant women in 25 communities in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions of Ghana were interviewed at the household level. The nutrient intakes were assessed using a structured 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire. A dietary diversity score (DDS) was measured as a count of food groups. A nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) of 14 nutrients as well as mean adequacy ratio (MAR) were calculated based on the 24-hour dietary recall. Results: The average energy, protein and fat intakes were 2,770.8 ± 1,127.5 Kcal/day, 59.2 ±27.5 g/day, and 105.25±58.0 g/day, respectively. The proportion of women meeting the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of these macro-nutrients were 58.8%, 27.0% and 50.3% respectively. The average MAR of 14 nutrients was calculated to be 68% as the overall measure of nutrient adequacy. MAR correlated positively with DDS (r = 0.24 P < 0.001). Over 50% pregnant women obtained less than 66% of the RDA for iron, calcium, riboflavin, folic acid and vitamin B12. Conclusion: Diets of the majority of these pregnant women were deficient in several nutrients. Dietary diversity scores served as a useful proxy indicator of nutrient adequacy in this sample. In order to meet the requirements for essential nutrients, more effort should be made to promote dietary diversity among pregnant women in northern Ghana.

This cross-sectional study was done in July 1990 at health posts of two subdistricts in Cilandak, South Jakarta, Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to assess the sensitivity and specificity of maternal anthropometric measures against the functional outcome of infant nutritional status (weight-for-age). The study population consisted of 175 mother-infant pairs, who were between 14-45 years old, and their infants, who were 0-6 months old. The indicators that identified women at risk of their infant being poor nutritional status (weight-for-age less than −1 SD) were maternal weight (sensitivity 33%, specificity 89%, and positive predictive value 26%), height (sensitivity 39%, specificity 83% and positive predictive value 21%), and calf circumference (sensitivity 50%, specificity 85% and positive predictive value 28%).

Objective To evaluate weight gain during pregnancy according to the pregestational state in women who underwent prenatal care in Primary Health Care.Methods A cross-sectional study with the participation of 255 pregnant women. Socioeconomic and demographic variables were collected using a structured questionnaire. Women were evaluated for nutritional status and dietary intake. Data related to the age of the pregnant woman, gestational week, current weight, pregestational weight, and height were obtained from the prenatal follow-up form. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for statistical analysis.Results Pregestational nutritional status assessment showed that 43.2% (n=110) of the women started gestation with overweight and 4.3% (n=11) started with low weight. 51% percent (n=130) gained gestational weight above the recommended level. The mean age of women with pregestational BMI ≥ 25 kg/m² was significantly higher than that of those with BMI <25 kg/m² (p<0.001). Total energy (p=0.037) and calcium (p=0.004) intake were higher in women with weight gain above the recommended.Discussion The results presented highlight the importance of strategies in public health to avoid excess weight gain during pregnancy.Conclusion Pregnant women presented a gestational weight gain above the recommended maximum value according to pregestational BMI, which may contribute to adverse maternal and infant outcomes.

Nutrient intake is one of the factors affect nutritional status. International students who live in other countries face different environment from their own country. The differences affects food habits, nutritional adequacy level, and nutritional status of international students. This study aimed to analyze the correlation of nutrition intake and nutritional status among international students in Surabaya. This cross-sectional study included 30 respondents. Food consumption was collected by Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire. Nutritional status determined by body weight and height. Chi-square test was used to analyze the correlation variables. The average energy intake of international students were 1,888 ± 379 kcal per day. The percentage of overweight international students were 20% and underweight were 16.7%. The results showed low correlation between energy (r=0.370) and protein (r=0.380) adequacy level with nutritional status, moderate correlation between fat adequacy level (r=0.410) and nutritional status, and no correlation between carbohydrate adequacy level (r=-) with nutritional status. The conclusion was lower macronutrient intake causes inadequacy energy level which causes one third of international students didn’t have normal nutritional status. Therefore, international students need to increase macronutrient intake by increasing meal-portion, choosing balanced food, and not skipping meal time.

The assistance to older community-dwellers provided by family caregivers is crucial for the maintenance of an acceptable quality of life, especially when dementia is present. The caregiver burden may be extremely high, but few data are available on what patient domains mainly affect the caregiver. The aim of this cross-sectional study, performed in older outpatients, was to examine the impact of cognitive, physical and nutritional status of elderly community-dwellers on the caregiver burden, as evaluated by the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI). A group of 406 elderly outpatients (161 M, 245 F, mean age of 83.20 ± 6.40) was enrolled. A significant correlation was observed between Mini Nutritional Assessment Instrument-Short Form (MNA-SF) and CBI (r = −0.34; p < 0.001), suggesting that a poor nutritional status is significantly associated with the caregiver burden. There was also a significant correlation between CBI and Short Physical Performance Battery score (r = −0.29; p < 0.001), hand grip strength (r = −0.25; p < 0.001), Mini-Mental State Examination score (r = −0.39; p < 0.001), Geriatric Depression Scale (r = 0.23; p < 0.001), Body Mass Index (BMI) (r = 0.01; p = 0.03), Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (ADL/IADL) (r = −0.61 and −0.62, respectively; p < 0.001), and with the 4-m walking speed (r = −0.42; p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, only the relationships of the CBI (in particular the physical subcomponent) with ADL, IADL and MNA-SF remained statistically significant (β ± SE −0.89 ± 0.20, p < 0.001; −0.58 ± 0.15, p < 0.001 and −0.25 ± 0.11, p = 0.02, respectively). The relationship between CBI and BMI remained statistically significant only for the physical subcomponent (β ± SE 0.14 ± 0.05; p = 0.006). Thus, in this study, we confirmed that the impairment in the activities of daily living is associated with a significant impact on the caregiver burden, and we found also that a poor nutritional status of the older outpatient is independently more associated with the caregiver burden than cognitive and physical disability. The combined evaluation of both patients and caregivers can improve the knowledge and assistance to the elderly subjects.

Background: In a hospitalized setting, malnutrition is known to increase patient’s mortality and lower the quality of life; therefore, it is essential to detect such cases and intervene at the earliest possible. The goal of this study is to estimate the rate of malnutrition in hospitalized Lebanese patients, explore its association with different factors, and create a simple tool to detect patients at high risk of malnutrition. Methods: One hundred and fifty Lebanese hospitalized patients, suffering at least from one chronic disease, were randomly chosen from Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Notre Dame de Secours (CHU-NDS) hospital. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) score was used to assess nutritional status. Results: A total of 34.7% of patients in our sample were at risk of malnutrition and 9.3% were malnourished. A higher risk of malnutrition was found in patients with a low body mass index, who were physically inactive or admitted to the hospital more than once in the past 6 months. The nutritional status was not associated with certain chronic diseases more than others. We designed a simple decision tree model based only on 3 questions to detect patients at high risk of malnutrition/malnourished. This tool has a sensitivity of 62% and a specificity of 77%. Conclusion: The prevalence found in our study was comparable with previous data. However, factors associated with poor nutritional status were somewhat different. Further studies are needed to validate our screening tool and to examine the effect of specific diseases on malnutrition on a larger scale.

Abstract Background Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease with several infection phenotypes. In addition to mass drug administration, host immune response contributes to microfilariae clearance. An important influence of immunity, nutritional status, remains to be evaluated among filarial lymphedema patients. This study sought to assess the nutritional status of LF patients and its association with the pathology. Methods As cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the nutrition status of lymphedema patients in Ahanta West, Ghana. To obtain sociodemographic and nutrition data, a structured questionnaire was administered to the study participants. Anthropometry and 24-hour food recall were used to assess the nutritional status of participants. Results While all and 71 (82.6%) had adequate carbohydrate and protein intakes respectively, 83 (96.5%) had inadequate intake of fat. There were widespread inadequate nutrients intakes that were associated with stage of lymphedema: fat, r = -0.267, p = .024; carbohydrate, r = 0.305, p = .010; sodium, r = -0.259, p = .029; copper, r = -0.249, p = .036; selenium, r = -0.265, p = .025; pantothenic acid, r = -0.265, p = .025; vitamin B6, r = -0.270, p = .023; vitamin B12, r = -0.288, p = .015; and vitamin A, r = -0.276, p = .020. Conclusion The study shows widespread malnutrition among the participants. A nutritional intervention is recommended to complement current management strategies of filarial lymphedema.

Introduction: Pregnant women experiencing poor nutritional status remains a problem which is still commonly found in Surabaya. Poor nutritional status is one of the causes of increased mortality in pregnant women. The mother's education and occupation, family income, number of children, and family shape are associated with the incidence of nutritional status in pregnant women. The purpose of this study was to explain the factors related to the nutritional status of pregnant women based on transcultural nursing theory.Methods: his study uses a cross-sectional design. The population were pregnant women at the Public Health Center Tanah Kali Kedinding Surabaya Indonesia, 104 respondents were selected using a consecutive sampling technique. The independent variables were technological, religious, family support, cultural values, political & legal, economic, and educational, while the dependent variable was the incidence of nutritional status in pregnant women. The data was obtained using questionnaires and mid upper arm circumstance (MUAC) measurements. The data was analyzed using the Spearman rho test.Results: There was a relationship between technological (p=0.001 ; r=0.332), family support (p=0.000 ; r=0.379), cultural values (p=0.000 ; r=0.702), political & legal (p=0.000 ; r=0.387), economic (p=0.031 ; r=0.212), and educational (p=0.020 ; r=0.228) factors with nutritional status in pregnant women.Discussion: Technological, family support, cultural values, political & legal, economic, and educational factors influenced the nutritional status of pregnant women. The cultural factor was the most dominant in influencing the nutritional status of pregnant women.

AbstractObjectiveTo investigate the association of seasonality with dietary diversity, household food security and nutritional status of pregnant women in a rural district of northern Bangladesh.DesignA cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2013 to February 2015. Data were collected on demographics, household food security (using the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale), dietary diversity (using the women’s dietary diversity questionnaire) and mid-upper arm circumference. Descriptive statistics were used to explore demographics, dietary diversity, household food security and nutritional status, and inferential statistics were applied to explore the role of seasonality on diversity, household food security and nutritional status.SettingTwelve villages of Pirganj sub-district, Rangpur District, northern Bangladesh.SubjectsPregnant women (n 288).ResultsSeasonality was found to be associated with dietary diversity (P=0·026) and household food security (P=0·039). Dietary diversity was significantly lower in summer (P=0·029) and spring (P=0·038). Food security deteriorated significantly in spring (P=0·006) and late autumn (P=0·009).ConclusionSeasons play a role in women’s household food security status and dietary diversity, with food security deteriorating during the lean seasons and dietary diversity deteriorating during the second ‘lesser’ lean season and the season immediately after. Interventions that aim to improve the diet of pregnant women from low-income, subsistence-farming communities need to recognise the role of seasonality on diet and food security and to incorporate initiatives to prevent seasonal declines.
