Abstract A mixed acid solubilization procedure has been developed for the determination of total mercury in food samples. This procedure has eliminated the problem of mercury loss from samples that are high in lipid or carbohydrate content. The solubilization is rapid and quantitative and can be used for a wide range of food items.

Abstract A method of digestion by using a mixture of hydrochloric, nitric, and sulfuric acids has been developed for the determination of total mercury in a wide range of food samples. Good recoveries of mercury were obtained from NBS (National Bureau of Standards) Albacore Tuna and from food samples spiked with inorganic mercury. A detection limit of 0.01g mercury/g can be obtained.

Abstract A simple, sensitive, and reproducible procedure has been investigated for the determination of total arsenic in composite food samples. Samples are dry ashed in the presence of magnesium oxide and magnesium nitrate, and arsenic is evolved from an acid solution as its hydride. The arsine is reacted with silver diethyldithiocarbamate to give a red complex that is measured photometrically. The absorbance of this complex is proportional to arsenic over a wide range of concentrations (1–20 μg arsenic). The method presented is sensitive to 0.05 ppm (1 μg/20 g product).

Abstract Background Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) is an ecologically significant fish species in the Baltic Sea and has been recognized as a suitable organism to measure concentrations of mercury (Hg) contamination. The adult species occupy a high trophic position; therefore, significant levels of the hazardous substances tend to bioaccumulate in their tissues. However, the ability of the species to inhabit a wide range of feeding ground raises concerns about the adequacy of monitoring data in relation to the representativeness of measured levels of Hg at specific locations. Accounting for the migratory characteristics of this species can shed light on the origin of the analyzed specimens and thus trace Hg uptake chain. Perch samples and potential perch prey were collected at three remote stations in a fully interlinked system river–lake–coastal/transitional waters of the Gulf of Riga. Total mercury (THg) concentration and stable isotope ratios were measured in each sampled item. The perch data were divided into three subgroups associated with specific feeding grounds and one mixed group. A Bayesian mixing model was implemented to quantify the feeding preferences of each group, and based on the results, influence of each food source on Hg uptake by perch was modeled by means of Gaussian GAM model. Results Calculated carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values demonstrated clear evidence of perch specimens migrating between the sampling stations. Substantial proportion of specimens sampled in river and lake stations had isotopic signals consistent with feeding in the gulf. The group of perch associated with feeding in the river grounds exhibited the highest THg concentrations with mean value of 209 µg kg−1 wet weight. The food items C. harengus membras and Crustacean showed significant mitigating effects on THg concentration. The rest of the food items showed a secondary influence on the variation of THg concentration. Conclusions The study clearly showed that the high mobility of perch along associated aquatic systems has a noticeable effect on Hg concentrations measured in the fish. Therefore, trophic position and isotopic signatures, along with identification of the food sources, can serve as important supplementary tools for more accurate data interpretation of Hg accumulation.

A new spectrofluorimetric reagent N-(pyridin-2-yl)-quinoline-2-carbothioamide (PQTA) has been synthesized and characterized. A very simple, ultra-sensitive, and highly selective, and non-extractive new spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of molybdenum at pico-trace levels using PQTA has been developed. This novel fluorimetric reagent PQTA, becomes oxidized in a slightly acidic (0.0025-0.05 M H2SO4) solution with molybdenum (VI) in absolute ethanol to produce a highly fluorescent oxidized product (λex = 300 nm; λem= 377 nm). Constant and maximum fluorescence intensities were observed over a wide range of acidity (0.0025-0.0500 M H2SO4) for the period between 2 min and 24 h. Linear calibration graphs were obtained for 0.001-600 μg/L of Mo having a detection limit of 0.15 ng/L; the quantification limit of the reaction system was found to be 1.5 ng/L and the RSD was 0-2%. A large excess of over 60 cations, anions, and complexing agents like chloride, phosphate, azide, tartrate, oxalate, and SCN- etc. do not interfere in the determination. The developed method was successfully used in the determination of molybdenum in several Certified Reference Materials (Alloys, steel, serum, bovine liver, drinking water, soil, and sediments) as well as in some environmental waters (Potable and polluted), biological fluids (Human blood, urine, hair, and milk), soil samples and food samples (Vegetables, rice, and wheat) solutions containing both molybdenum (VI) and molybdenum (V) ions. The results of the proposed method for assessing biological, food and vegetable samples were comparable with ICP-OES and AAS were found to be in excellent agreement.

Polyphenols are secondary metabolites of plants, commonly present in the human diet. Since they exhibit a wide range of bioactivities, polyphenols are extensively studied in the fields of nutrition and human health. Current studies have shown a high interest in determining the bioaccessibility of polyphenols, the amount of polyphenols that becomes available for absorption in the digestive tract. Bioaccessibility can be determined with the help of in vitro static gastrointestinal (GI) digestion models. In such a methodology, food samples containing polyphenols are subjected to a series of conditions that mimic the human gastrointestinal tract, with associated parameters. A high number of GI models with slightly different parameters were published. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature, focusing on the determination of polyphenol bioaccessibility and the parameters used in these GI digestion models, such as time, temperature, and pH of digestion, as well as enzyme concentrations. Gastrointestinal digestion models consist of oral, gastric and small intestine phases. These models provide a simple and reliable methodology which enables insight into the amount of bioaccessible polyphenols.

Abstract Objectives This study was conducted to characterize lytic bacteriophages infecting enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) on several types of food and analyze their ability as phage biocontrol to be used as a food preservative. Characterization was done for bacteriophage morphology and stability, along with the determination of minimum multiplicity of infection (miMOI), and application of bacteriophage in the food matrix. Results Out of the five samples, BL EPEC bacteriophage exhibited the highest titer of 2.05  ×  109 PFU/mL, with a wide range of pH tolerance, and high thermal tolerance. BL EPEC also showed the least reduction after 168 h of incubation, with a rate of 0.90  ×  10–3 log10 per hour. Bacteriophages from BL EPEC and CS EPEC showed an ideal value of miMOI of 0.01. As a food preservative, BL EPEC bacteriophage was able to reduce bacteria in food samples with a reduction above 0.24 log10 in lettuce and approximately 1.84 log10 in milk. From this study we found that BL EPEC bacteriophage showed the greatest potential to be used as phage biocontrol to improve food safety

Given the widespread use of bisphenols and parabens in consumer products, the assessment of their intake is crucial and represents the first step towards the assessment of the potential risks that these compounds may pose to human health. In the present study, a total of 98 samples of food items commonly consumed by the Spanish population were collected from different national supermarkets and grocery stores for the determination of parabens and bisphenols. Our analysis demonstrated that 56 of the 98 food samples contained detectable levels of parabens with limits of quantification (LOQ) between 0.4 and 0.9 ng g−1. The total concentration of parabens (sum of four parabens: ∑parabens) ranged from below the LOQ to 281.7 ng g−1, with a mean value of 73.86 ng g−1. A total of 52% of the samples showed detectable concentrations of bisphenols. Bisphenol A (BPA) was the most frequently detected bisphenol in the food samples analysed, followed by bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol E (BPE). Bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol B (BPB) and bisphenol P (BPP) were not found in any of the analysed samples. LOQ for these bisphenols were between 0.4 and 4.0 ng g−1.

Method of data collectionwas done with interviews, documentation, and observations through fieldwork (field research).The results of the research on the process of discussion of the draft local regulations andmutual agreement about Designation of Indigenous Villages in the Rokan Hulu is, showed thatthe political dynamics that occur due to the presence of various political interests, rejectionorally by Villagers who were judged to have met the requirements of Draft Regulations to beformulated and the area for the set to be Indigenous Villages, and also there is a desire fromsome villages in the yet to Draft local regulations in order to set the Indigenous village , there isa wide range of interests of these aspects influenced the agreement to assign the entire localVillage which is in the Rokan Hulu become Indigenous village, and the village of Transmigrationinto administrative Villages where the initiator of the changes in the number of IndigenousVillages in the Rokan Hulu it is the desire of the local Government of its own.
