The postscript surveys a number of changes that can be found in the key SF memes and their treatment as animation moved into postwar film and television. It frames these alterations in terms of a question that is often asked about cartoons: whether they are simply harmless amusements or “instrumental” works that can motivate their audiences after the fashion that, many argue, the best SF literature does. The chapter chronicles a variety of postwar scientific and technological developments that would quickly appear in and become staples of both live-action and animated films, including rockets, robots, computers, and the space race. The popularity of these elements demonstrates the postwar persistence of the SF memes explored in the previous chapters and suggests how animation was working, much like SF literature, not only to familiarize audiences with the impact of science and technology, but also to make that impact less threatening and more acceptable to popular culture.

This chapter examines animation’s fascination with the robot, a figure that has obvious reflexive links to animation’s typical anthropomorphic characters—the various mice, cats, dogs, and ducks that were the usual stars of early cartoons. The robot is also a figure that had an especially popular resonance throughout the pre-war period, as is evidenced by its appearance in a variety of popular culture venues, including vaudeville acts, World’s Fairs, and feature films. What makes this figure particularly significant in its ability to embody the culture’s conflicted attitudes toward science and technology—attitudes that were also being worked out within literary SF. The animated films, the chapter suggests, typically juxtapose the culture’s faith in a technological utopia, within which robots play a key role, with contemporary concerns about the relationship between technology and labor, thereby qualifying the modernist embrace of the technology.

In the article, the author raises the issue of socialization of children through popular culture. She assumes that popular culture can be treated as a carrier of values and patterns of conduct, and also as a key factor of socialization. The codes, contexts or values that are conveyed through animated movies, are what a child can later refer to the surrounding reality. In this way, it is possible to learn family, professional or gender roles, which are then perpetuated in play. The author explores primarily the impact of popular culture through an analysis of animated films produced by Walt Disney Pictures, in which the main characters are princesses and in which gender roles get considerable exposure. Assuming that gender is socially constructed, we learn about gender norms through interactions with people and popular culture, which convey to us the norms and values of the society we live in. The author points out how the patterns conveyed by Disney movies have changed and what their relationship with women’s rights was. Simultaneously, the author analyses the impact of these films on legal culture, trying to see how animated movies affect legal awareness and attitudes towards the law, and what patterns are passed on to the youngest citizens.

Microalgae wastewater treatment has long been promoted as a sustainable method to handle the influx of human waste due to population growth. Initially, in the early 1900’s, microalgae was noted to increase wastewater treatment efficiency by aerating the water and consuming waste. By mid-century, wastewater grown microalgae was being investigated as a way to produce biomass for food, fuel, and other biomaterials. The space race in the 1960’s led to the use of microalgae in life support systems. Technological developments and political pressure in the 1970’s spurred studies of the impact of wastewater on the growth of phytoplankton in the oceans as well as methods to use microalgae wastewater treatment in aquaculture. Simultaneously, the oil crisis of that decade promoted research of alternative fuels, which included microalgae biofuels via the Aquatic Species Program. This program led to research into the use of wastewater as a feedstock for microalgae growth. By the later 2000’s, instability in the oil market caused another energy crisis which further prompted investment in microalgae biofuels, some of which involved combined wastewater treatment. Currently, microalgae wastewater treatment is being researched as a way to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions to curb global warming and produce sustainable biofuels.

The increasing importance of the information revolution and terms such as ‘speed’, ‘disorientation’, and ‘changing the concept of distance’, has provided us with tools that had not been previously available. Technological developments are moving toward Fluidity, which was previously unknown and cannot be understood through modern tools. With acceleration of the rhythm in the age we live in and the clarity of the role of information technology in our lives, as also the ease of access to information, has helped us to overcome many difficulties. Technology in all its forms has had a clear impact on all areas of daily life, and it has a clear impact on human thought in general, and the architectural space in particular, where the architecture moves from narrow spaces and is limited to new spaces known as the ‘breadth’, and forms of unlimited and stability to spaces characterized with fluidity. The research problem (the lack of clarity of knowledge about the impact of vast information flow associated with the technology of the age in the occurrence of liquidity in contemporary architectural space) is presented here. The research aims at defining fluidity and clarifying the effect of information technology on the changing characteristics of architectural space from solidity to fluidity. The research follows the analytical approach in tracking the concept of fluidity in physics and sociology to define this concept and then to explain the effect of Information Technology (IT) to achieve the fluidity of contemporary architectural space, leading to an analysis of the Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) architectural model. The research concludes that information technology achieves fluidity through various tools (communication systems, computers, automation, and artificial intelligence). It has changed the characteristics of contemporary architectural space and made it behave like an organism, through using smart material.

Public Service, in popular culture, can be viewed through many artistic lenses. Although there has been a consistent negative portrayal of government through art forms such as film and television, this research looks to review how government institutions in the United States have used art to provide a positive portrayal of public service. Eight forms of public service art are outlined through a content analysis of the holdings at the Virtual Museum of Public Service. The findings show that government and public entities have historically and continually engaged in promoting public service through art. Many of these public art examples are accessible year round, without limitations, such as buildings, statues, and public structures.

One of the most significant recent technological developments concerns the application of intelligent machines to jobs that up to now have been considered safe from automation. These changes have generated considerable debate regarding the impacts that the widespread adoption of intelligent machines could have on the nature of work. This chapter provides a thematic review, across multiple academic disciplines, of the current state of academic knowledge regarding the impact of intelligent machines on knowledge and service work. Adopting a work-practice perspective, the chapter reviews the extant literature concerning changing relations between workers and intelligent machines, the adoption and acceptance of intelligent machines, and ethical issues associated with greater machine human collaboration. A key finding is that much of the research discusses intelligent machines complementing and extending human capabilities rather than removing humans from work processes. The concept of augmentation of humans and human work, rather than wholesale replacement from automation, flows through the literature across a range of domains. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the main gaps in existing knowledge and ways in which future research may provide a deeper understanding of how people (currently and in the near future) experience intelligent machines in their day-to-day work practice. These include the need for multi-disciplinary research, the role of contexts, the need for more and better empirical research, the changing relationships between humans and intelligent machines, the adoption and acceptance of the technology, and ethical issues.

Abstract Background The prevalence of aortic stenosis (AS) steadily increases with age. There is a consensus that intervention should be advised in patients with symptomatic severe AS. However, decision to operate raises complex issues in the elderly due to the increasing operative comorbidity and mortality. There is limited information regarding the characteristics and outcome of elderly patients with symptomatic severe AS who were denied intervention and the reasons leading to the denial. Purpose To analyze the decision-making and the prognosis in elderly patients with symptomatic severe AS. Methods In a cohort of 8929 patients aged ≥60 years with significant valvular heart disease, we divided patients with severe (valve area ≤1 cm2 or peak velocity ≥4.0 m/s or mean gradient ≥40 mmHg), symptomatic (angina or NYHA II-IV or syncope) AS into three groups by final treatment decision: intervention group, doctor-deny group, patient-deny group. The impact of characteristics on decision-making was evaluated and 1-year mortality among three groups were compared. Results Among 546 patients with severe symptomatic AS, the interventional decision was taken in 338 patients (61.9%), 134 patients (24.5%) were denied intervention by doctor after evaluation and 74 patients (13.5%) refused intervention due to personal preference. In multivariable analysis, age [OR=1.104, 95% CI (1.068–1.142)], multi-comorbidities [OR=4.706, 95% CI (2.355–9.403)] and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) [OR=1.021, 95% CI (1.001–1.042)] were markedly associated with the conservative decision made by doctor, while LVEF >50% [OR=0.260, 95% CI (0.082–0.823)] was significantly linked with the interventional decision. Lower mortality was observed in intervention group during 1-year follow-up compared with either doctor-deny group or patient-deny group (both P<0.001 after adjustment). Further, diabetes [HR=2.513, 95% CI (1.243–5.084)], syncope [HR=2.856, 95% CI (1.338–6.098)], atrial fibrillation (AF) [HR=2.764, 95% CI (1.305–5.855)], stroke [HR=2.921, 95% CI (1.252–6.851)] and multi-comorbidities [HR=3.120, 95% CI (1.363–7.142)] were strong 1-year mortality predictors, whereas interventional treatment [HR=0.195, 95% CI (0.091–0.417)] and LEVF >50% [HR=0.960, 95% CI (0.938–0.984)] were related to lower mortality. Conclusions Intervention was denied in about forty percent of elderly patients with symptomatic severe AS. Patients with advanced age, multi-comorbidities and increased LVEDD tended to be denied intervention by doctors, whereas interventions were more likely to be performed on patients with normal LVEF. Diabetes, syncope, AF, stroke and multi-comorbidities were the predictive factors of 1-year mortality. Elderly patients with symptomatic severe AS could benefit from intervention. ABSTRACT Augusto Moreno is credited with establishing the first radiocarbon (14C) laboratory in Mexico in the 1950s, however, 14C measurement with the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technique was not achieved in our country until 2003. Douglas Donahue from the University of Arizona, a pioneer in using AMS for 14C dating, participated in that experiment; then, the idea of establishing a 14C AMS laboratory evolved into a feasible project. This was finally reached in 2013, thanks to the technological developments in AMS and sample preparation with automated equipment, and the backing and support of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the National Council for Science and Technology. The Mexican AMS Laboratory, LEMA, with a compact 1 MV system from High Voltage Engineering Europa, and its sample preparation laboratories with IonPlus automated graphitization equipment, is now a reality.
