Social Laws and Social Facts

Cassius Dio asserts that the emperor Augustus’ social legislation arose from an imbalance in numbers between men and women among the Roman elite. This chapter considers how this statement has been understood in historical readings of the laws. It also argues that Dio’s assertion should be seen instead as one more instance of the ways that the legislation not only gives us access to knowledge about women’s lives but also attempts to generate more “knowledge” and questions about them. The chapter utilizes feminist epistemology in its discussion of legal and social matters. It is interested in facts as well as the absence of facts in locating women in ancient narratives.

AbstractThis study quantitatively analyses mobility in Vitoria-Gasteiz from a gender approach, based on data obtained from a survey on urban mobility of the municipality carried out in 2014. Among the many dimensions that would be relevant from a gender perspective, we have considered particularly interesting the study of the mobility of men and women with children under six. This seems especially relevant as this is the period of women's lives in which it is more difficult to reconcile work with parenting. We intend to explore if gender differences are more remarkable under these circumstances in order to identify how transport may impact on the compatibility of work and parenting among women. We will mainly focus on analysing the differences in the number of trips, the reasons behind them, and the means of transport they use. We conclude that, in fact, having children under six in the household makes a difference in mobility between women and men.

Parental control is an integral part of parent-child relations and a traditional tool of socialization. However, numerous negative effects of parental intervention in the child’s inner world are known. This study clarifies the delayed effects of parental control and a detached parenting style. 270 men and women are aged 35-44 years filled in the questionnaires of hardiness, the sovereignty of the psychological space, and perceived behavior by the father and mother. The results confirmed the prevalence of parental control, especially its manifestations on the part of mothers about daughters. In adult women's lives, mothers' directiveness correlates with hostility and violation of personal boundaries as regards the body, personal territory, things, habits, social connections, and values; men noted maternal interference in the formation of sovereign habits and values. At the same time, parental non-involvement is widespread; the autonomy of fathers about children is significantly greater than mothers. Correlation analysis confirmed the assumption that parental directivity/autonomy determines the hardiness and sense of integrity of personal boundaries in adulthood. The effect of parental control in adulthood depends on the gender of the children and the parents. Maternal control is a strong negative factor for daughters, while maternal autonomy positively correlates with indicators of hardiness. Paternal control was a neutral factor for daughters. For sons, the directivity of father and mother contributes to the formation of resilience. The conclusion was made about the need for differentiation of positive and negative effects of parental control, taking into account gender positions.

Aging is the process of becoming older. It represents the accumulation of changes in a human being over time, encompassing physical, psychological, and social changes. Both men and women experience some sexual changes with age, but they experience aging differently. For women, it's commonly known as menopause, starting around in the age of 50. For men, aging is more gradual, with testosterone levels declining slowly over time. Unlike menopause, which brings fertility to an end, men can still reproduce and create sperm well into old age. The effects of aging on social relations, existence, and identity are more alarming and often dreadful. Despite the influence of the aging process on women's lives, very few feminist insights analyzed the interconnectedness of gender and aging. Hence, the impact of aging on gender inequalities requires more serious discussions and analysis. Only through these efforts can new visions of the plight and contributions of older women grow and policies be developed to remedy the problems.

Purpose: Fatigue may be a commonly experienced symptom of acute myocardial infarction (AMI); however, there is a disturbing lack of data about the fatigue that occurs among men and women at the time of AMI. The purpose of this study was to characterize the fatigue experienced among men and women during AMI using three validated fatigue questionnaires. Method: Ninety AMI patients were recruited from six Midwestern hospitals. The Profile of Mood States (POMS), Fatigue Severity Index (FSI), and the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) were completed by each hemodynamically stable subject. Results: The sample included 76% men (mean age = 61, SD = 10), 24% women (mean age = 59, SD = 13); 78% non-Hispanic white. Subjects scored 1.7 on the POMS fatigue subscale (0 = none, 4 = extremely), 47.3 on the SF-36 vitality subscale (0 = most, 100 = least), and 6.4 on the “most fatigued” item of the FSI (0 = not fatigued at all, 10 = as fatigued as I could be). Scores from AMI subjects were compared to published scores in other populations. Compared to older adult male subjects, AMI subjects had higher levels of fatigue on the POMS fatigue subscale (M = 0.71, t = 7.2, p < 0.001) and the SF-36 vitality subscale (M = 51.0, t = 2.85, p < 0.01). In addition, AMI patients were more fatigued on the “most fatigued” item of the FSI compared to cancer patients in active treatment (M = 5.5, t = 2.28, p = 0.05). Men and women reported similar levels of fatigue across all three measures; however, women reported that fatigue caused more disruption of activities of daily living (p < 0.001), more difficulty with physical activities (p < 0.01), poorer rating of general health (p < 0.05), and more interference with social activities (p < 0.05). Conclusion: To date, fatigue as a symptom of AMI has focused on using qualitative methods in women. This study used three well-established measures of fatigue to demonstrate that fatigue is commonly experienced by both men and women and at levels that are higher than a healthy older adult sample and cancer patients. Interestingly, fatigue had a greater negative impact on women’s lives.

In this article, Annie Rogers explores the etymology of courage, and links the "ordinary courage" of eight- to twelve-year-old girls with an old meaning of the word: "to speak one's mind by telling all one's heart." She then observes how this ordinary courage is lost as many girls reach early adolescence. Her observation is embedded in a newly emerging psychology of women based on empirical studies of girls, which have documented a striking loss of voice, of resiliency, and of self-confidence in girls as they enter early adolescence. These studies have identified this as a time of particular vulnerability and risk in young women's psychological development, as it becomes increasingly dangerous for them to speak their minds truthfully within the context of cultural conspiracies to silence women's knowledge. In order to capture the girls' inner life of feeling, Rogers introduces a "poetics of research," a particular discourse grounded in feminist epistemology and methodology, as well as the voice-centered,relational practice of research she has helped to create.

This article aims at describing women existence as reflected on Bride Song poem written by Christina Rossseti. Rossetti’s view on women’s lives was inspired much by her awareness toward the their conditions in Victorian’s era. In the meantime, women were shaped to be an individuals who fulfill the ideal standard as preferred by men. By Bride Song, Rosetti tried to break patriarchal domination toward women. She wanted to turn back the existence equivalence between men and women based on human rights. She also attemped to open the world’s perspective to accept women’s existence as important as men’s and not just a binary opposition of it. Women’s existence in Bride Song is not only a struggle against men’s domination in Victorian era, but it also  has relevance with contemporary issues on women’s struggle to show their existence in this modern era.
