Longitudinal Surveys

Longitudinal or panel surveys, in which the same individuals are interviewed repeatedly over time, are increasingly common in the social sciences. The benefit of such surveys is that they track the same respondents so that researchers can measure individual-level change over time, offering greater causal leverage than cross-sectional surveys. Panel surveys share the challenges of other surveys while also facing several unique issues in design, implementation, and analysis. This chapter considers three such challenges: (1) the tension between continuity and innovation in the questionnaire design; (2) panel attrition, whereby some individuals who complete the first wave of the survey fail to participate in subsequent waves; and (3) specific types of measurement error—panel conditioning and seam bias. It includes an overview of these issues and their implications for data quality and outlines approaches for diagnosing and correcting for these issues in the design and analysis of panel surveys.

Panel conditioning refers to the phenomenon whereby respondents’ attitudes, behaviour, reporting of behaviour and/or knowledge are changed by repeated participation in a panel survey. Uncovering such effects, however, is difficult due to three major methodological challenges. First, researchers need to disentangle changes in behaviour and attitudes from changes in the reporting of behaviour and attitudes as panel conditioning may result in both, even at the same time and in opposite directions. Second, the identification of the causal effect of panel participation on the various forms of change mentioned above is complicated as it requires comparisons of panel respondents with control groups of people who have not been interviewed before. Third, other sources of error in (panel) surveys may easily be mistaken for panel conditioning if not properly accounted for. Such error sources are panel attrition, mode effects, and interviewer effects. In this chapter the challenges mentioned above are reviewed in detail and a methodological framework for the analysis of panel conditioning effects is provided by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the various designs that researchers have developed to address the challenges. The chapter concludes with a discussion of a future research agenda on panel conditioning effects in longitudinal surveys.

It has been well documented that response rates to cross-sectional surveys have declined over the past few decades. It is less clear whether response rates to longitudinal surveys have experienced similar changes over time. This article examines trends in response rates in several major, national longitudinal surveys in the United States and abroad. The authors find that for most of these surveys, the wave-to-wave response rate has not declined. This article also describes the various approaches that these surveys use to minimize attrition.

The COVID-19 pandemic requires rapid public compliance with advice from health authorities. Here, we ask who was most likely to do so during the first wave of the pandemic. We conducted cross-sectional and panel surveys in eight Western democracies between March 19 and May 16 asking 26,508 citizens about their protective behavior relating to COVID-19. Consistent with prior research on epidemics, we find that perceptions of threat are crucial and culturally uniform determinants of protective behavior. On this basis, authorities could potentially foster further compliance by appealing to fear of COVID-19, but there may be normative and practical limits to such a strategy. Instead, we find that another major source of compliance is feelings of knowledge-based efficacy. Using individual-level panel data, we find evidence that knowledge efficacy amendable to change and exerts an effect on protective behavior. Importantly, the effects of such feelings are especially strong among those who do not feel threatened, creating a path to compliance without fear. In contrast, two other major candidates for facilitating compliance from the social sciences, interpersonal trust and institutional trust, have surprisingly little motivational power. To address future waves of the pandemic, health authorities should thus focus on facilitating efficacy in the public.

Economic inequality has become one of the most important themes in the social sciences. The debate has revolved around two basic models. Was Kuznets correct in his prediction that inequality declines with economic growth, or was Piketty, along with others in the Berkeley/Paris/Oxford group, correct to counter that capitalism without severe constraints inevitably leads to increasing inequality? The resolution will depend on long-term historical analysis. In Global Inequality, Milanovic proposed new models to analyze the social, economic, political, and historical factors that influence changes in inequality over time and space. In Capitalism, Alone, he changes direction to examine what patterns of capitalism and inequality will look like in the twenty-first century and beyond, as well as how inequality might be reduced without violence.

AbstractOver five million state and local government employees have lifetime earnings that are divided between employment that is covered by the Social Security system and employment that is not covered. As Social Security benefits are a nonlinear function of covered lifetime earnings, the simple application of the standard benefit formula to covered earnings only would provide a higher replacement rate on those earnings than is appropriate given the individuals' total (covered plus uncovered) lifetime earnings. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), established in 1983, is intended to correct this situation by applying a modified benefit formula to earnings of individuals with non-covered employment. This paper analyzes the distributional implications of the WEP and finds that it reduces benefits disproportionately for individuals with lower lifetime covered earnings. It discusses an alternative method of calculating the WEP that comes closer to preserving the intended redistribution of the system. In recognition of historical data limitations that prevent the Social Security Administration (SSA) from being able to implement this alternative method at present, the paper also analyzes two alternative ways of calculating the WEP that use the same information as the current WEP, are budget neutral, and come closer to maintaining the individual-level, cross-sectional progressivity of Social Security than does the existing WEP formula.

Abstract This study provides novel evidence on the relevance of task content changes between and within occupations to wage dynamics of occupational changers and stayers. I use individual-level, cross-sectional data featuring tasks performed on the job to compute a measure of proximity of job contents. Then, I merge this measure to a large-scale panel survey to show that occupational changers experience a wage growth that is declining when the accompanying alterations in task contents are big. For occupational stayers, alterations in task contents generate a positive wage component, beyond tenure effect. However, the results are not robust with respect to the choice of proximity measure and over time.

Objetivo: Analizar la somnolencia diurna excesiva y los efectos del trabajo en la salud de trabajadores de enfermería actuantes em la Unidad de Recuperación Post-Anestésica.Método: Estudio transversal, realizado con 39 trabajadores de enfermería de una Unidad de Recuperación Post-Anestésica de un Hospital Universitario. Los instrumentos de recolección de datos fueron el cuestionario de caracterización sociolaboral, la Escala de Somnolencia de Epworth y la Escala de Evaluación de los Daños Relacionados al Trabajo. Los datos fueron analizados con ayuda de Predictive Analytics Software, de la SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), a través de pruebas estadísticas.Resultados: Indican que los daños físicos presentaron mayor promedio (2,33 ± 1,15), predominando dolores en el cuerpo, espalda y piernas, dicho una clasificación grave, lo cual potencia el sufrimiento en el trabajo. En cuanto a la presencia de somnolencia diurna excesiva, el 41% de los trabajadores la presentaron. No se identificó asociación significativa entre la somnolencia diurna excesiva y los efectos del trabajo en la salud de trabajadores de enfermería.Conclusión: Este estudio podrá auxiliar en la planificación de acciones con el objetivo de minimizar los daños relacionados al trabajo y promover la salud del trabajador. Agent-based models (ABMs) have been attracting the attention of researchers in the social sciences, becoming a prominent paradigm in the study of complex social systems. Although a great number of models have been proposed for studying a variety of social phenomena, no general agent design methodology is available. Moreover, it is difficult to validate the accuracy of these models. For this reason, we believe that some guidelines for ABMs design must be devised; therefore, this paper is a first attempt to analyze the levels of ABMs, identify and classify several aspects that should be considered when designing ABMs. Through our analysis, the following implications have been found: (1) there are two levels in designing ABMs: the individual level, related to the design of the agents' internal structure, and the collective level, which concerns the design of the agent society or macro-dynamics of the model; and (2) the mechanisms of these levels strongly affect the outcomes of the models.

ABSTRACTObjectives: to describe, in the perception of nurses, the impact of a Nutritional Support training on the job and Identify the correlations between support organizational support to the transfer and characteristics of customers with the impact of training in the work of nurses. Method: it’s a nature quantitative research, a cross-sectional, correlacional and descriptive study. The data was collected by means a questionnaire asked to 114 nursing professionals. The data was stored and analyzed using the program Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, being carried out analyses descriptive and relevant to study. Results: more than 50% of trainees agreed have a positive impact of training support nutrition at work. The impact of training in nutritional therapy of nursing was significantly correlated with the support organizational (r=0,64, p=0,00). Conclusion: the higher the support of the Organization to training, the higher the positive impact on the work of trainees. Método: pesquisa de natureza quantitativa, onde se realizou um estudo transversal, correlacional e descritivo. Os dados foram obtidos mediante questionário aplicado a 114 profissionais de enfermagem, armazenados e analisados utilizando-se do programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (versão 13.0), cujas análises foram descritivas e inferenciais. Resultados: mais de 50% dos treinandos concordaram ter um impacto positivo do treinamento Suporte Nutricional no trabalho. O Impacto do treinamento em terapia nutricional no trabalho da equipe de enfermagem esteve significativamente correlacionado com o Suporte Organizacional (r=0,64, p=0,00). Conclusão: conclui-se que, quanto maior o Suporte de Transferência e o Suporte Organizacional maior foi o Impacto do treinamento no trabalho. Los datos fueron almacenados y analizados utilizando el programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, y se lleva a cabo el análisis descriptivo e inferencial de interés para el estudio. Resultados: más del 50% de los alunos de acuerdo a tener un impacto positivo de apoyo nutricional de formación en el trabajo. El impacto de la formación en la terapia nutricional en el trabajo del personal de enfermería fue significativamente correlacionado con el apoyo organizativo (r=0,64, p=0,00). Conclusión: en conclusión, cuanto mayor sea el apoyo a la transferencia y el apoyo organizativo fue el mayor impacto de la formación en el trabajo. Purpose. The aim of this article is to investigate the characteristics of “Folia Turistica” (FT), covering such questions as thematic profile, authors, and affiliations, internationalization, taking into account the content of issues from the origins of the magazine (1990) to the present (2018). Method. The aim of the work was achieved through two research methods, which were used in a complementary fashion: bibliometric analysis (in which data that quantitatively expressed the content of the relevant issues of FT was gathered, processed, and interpreted) and participatory observation, from the author’s participation in FT’s editorial staff. Results. FT is predominantly concerned with issues in the social sciences, it is closely tied to the humanities, and the natural sciences are also present, though this profile has changed over time. Contributors to FT have included more than 400 Polish authors over thirty years, representing almost ninety schools, from academies of physical education and universities to economic, agriculture, natural science, and technical colleges, and others. Though the number of foreign authors is limited, we should stress that they represent academies on four continents, and in many cases are figures with very high positions in the international community. Research and conclusions limitations. The limitations derive from the properties of the methods used, primarily displayed in the identification of FT’s thematic profile. This arbitrarily identified profile subordinates every article to a single overriding field of study – while many articles published in FT are multi- or interdisciplinary. Practical implications. This diagnosis of FT includes postulates for how the magazine might develop in the future. Originality. The specialist literature (especially Polish) fairly seldom makes critical evaluations of scholarly publications. Type of article. Empirical.
