Scholarly examination of the media coverage of the Supreme Court occurs for both intrinsic and instrumental purposes. Scholarly study of media coverage of the Court examines the content, frame, and magnitude of the coverage. Pushing further, these examinations provide critical information about the relationship between media coverage and the institutional credibility of the Court. Studies of media coverage are also instrumental as they provide metrics useful in the explication of judicial behavior. Despite the usefulness of the work explored here, the knowledge gained may be expiring. As social networks usurp traditional and online media sources as the conduit for information, our focus on the relationship of the mass media, its coverage of the Court, and various questions of judicial legitimacy or public knowledge may be expiring.

Many scholars have examined the relationship between public opinion and the U.S. Supreme Court, but most researchers have often failed to take into account the fact that the press mediates this relationship. Due to the public’s lack of independent knowledge about Supreme Court decisions, the media has the potential to play an influential role in the communication and interpretation of Supreme Court decisions. In this article, we examine the relationship between the Supreme Court, the media, and public opinion. First, we examine whether increased public tolerance on gay and lesbian issues has resulted in increased media coverage of gay-related cases before the Supreme Court. Second, we examine how media coverage of the Court’s 2003 decision to strike down state sodomy laws in Lawrence v. Texas may have been associated with decreased public support for gay and lesbian civil rights. Our analysis suggests that increased support for gay and lesbian civil rights may have lead to increased media attention to the Lawrence case and that the tone of this coverage may have subsequently resulted in an observed decrease in support for gay and lesbian civil rights following the Court’s decision. We also suggest that the release of a highly critical dissenting opinion by the Court in the case may have encouraged negative media coverage and the resulting shift in public opinion. Our research has broad implications for media coverage of Supreme Court decisions.

PT. Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP) and the activities of Illegal Logging inthe period 2009-2010 the focus of mass media. The focus of the reports motivatedby contradictory realities. On the one hand for the first time since a RegionalHead of local autonomy (Regent) was convicted of corruption (graft) relatedlicense for utilization of timber forest products (IUPHHK) that led to the illegallogging activities that also involve PT. RAPP. While on the other hand, theMinistry of Forestry by SK MENHUT/327/2009, provides expansion of theSemenanjung Kampar to PT. RAPP considered problematic and potentially theactivity of Illegal Logging. This paper aims to, first analyze the media coverage ofIllegal Logging on the existence PT. RAPP in 2009-2010. Second, describe andanalyze the implications of the media coverage of Illegal Logging on the existencePT. RAPP in 2009-2010. This paper uses constructionist (media) and politicaleconomy communication as a theoretical approach. The results of the discussionshowed that, the first the relationship of Illegal Logging and PT. RAPP has beenconstructed by the media that shows if the presence of both (PT RAPP and IllegalLogging) in the year 2009-2010 run separately and not linked. The second, so thenews about the activities undertaken Illegal Logging ('alleged') in PT RAPP anissue of 'ambiguous' and different from each other. <p>This research are to analyze the farmers’s attitude to the existence of the STA   Watusambang,   analyze   the   factors   forming   attitudes,   and   analyze   the relationships between the factors forming attitudes and the farmers’s attitude to the existence  of  STA  Watusambang.  The  basic  method  used  in  this  research  was descriptive quantitative with survey technique. The location of the research was determined purposively in Blumbang Village, Tawangmangu Subdistrict, Karanganyar Regency. Sampling method used proportional random sampling, there were 60 carrot farmers chosen from each member farmer groups (4 farmer groups). The attitude- forming  of  carrot  farmers  in  this  research  is  age,  formal  education,  personal experience, culture, and exposure to the mass media. The relationship of attitude- forming factors with the farmers’s attitude could be known by using Rank Spearman analysis. The result of this research indicate that the attitude of carrot farmers against to  STA  Watusambang  50.0%  as  much  as  the  farmer  respondents  have  a  neutral attitude. The largest percentage age farmer respondents in the age category 37-44 years, formal education and culture in low category, personal experience and influence others who are considered important in the medium category, and exposure to the mass media in the category. Relationship analysis of test results showed there are a very significant relationship (α=0,01) between the influence of others considered important, personal experiences, and culture with an attitude of carrot farmers against STA; There is no significant relationship between age, formal education, and the media with the attitude of carrot farmers against the STA.</p>

Статья посвящена рассмотрению проблемы аксиологической медиа- трансляции. Раскрывается взаимосвязь ценностей в социальном, культурном и политическом контекстах. Выявляются основные ценностные установки, транслируемые через массмедиа: 1) социально-групповые и межэтнические отношения, 2) взаимоотношение личности и социума, 3) общественная формация, 4) социо- и экономико-политические отношения. Выделяются такие медиажанры, в которых реализуются ценностные установки, как критическая аналитика, публичная речь, голосование, информационное сообщение, диалог, обратная связь, документ. Устанавливаются основные функции медиадискурса в процессе аксиологической медиатрансляции, к которым относятся аксиологическая аргументация, аксиологическая акцентуация, аксиологическая интеграция, аксиологическая экспансия. Исследование вносит вклад в аксио-логическую лингвистику, психолингвистику, социолингвистику, дискурсивную лингвистику, политическую медиалингвистику. The article is devoted to the consideration of the problem of axiological media translation. The relationship of values in the social, cultural and political context is revealed. The main values are revealed, broadcast through mass media: 1) social group and inter-ethnic relations, 2) relationship of personality and society, 3) public formation, 4) social and economic-political relations. There are media channels in which value settings are implemented, such as critical analytics, public speech, voting, information message, dialogue, feedback, document. The main functions of the media course in the process of axiological media translation are established, which include axiological reasoning, axiological accentuation, axiological integration, and axiological expansion. The study contributes to axiological linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, discursive linguistics, political media linguistics.

Si pensamos en la relación del espacio urbano contemporáneo con la luz, debemos hablar de dinámicas sociales dentro de las metrópolis contemporáneas y de cómo estos suponen un paradigma de la transformación tecnológica y social respecto a los media dentro del espacio urbano. Esto ha culminado con la conversión de las pantallas basadas en tecnología LCD en parte del medio en el cual nos desenvolvemos socialmente mediante las redes sociales. Por otro lado el lugar se diluye dentro de imágenes virtuales, dislocadas y descontextualizadas, convirtiendo la ciudad en un interfaz comunicativo, y lo visual en una experiencia espacial. Mass media coverage on the rise of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) became public attention including its news on online media. Online media that reported it among others are Republika.co.id, Liputan6.com, and Merdeka.com. The purpose of this study is to find out how online media in Indonesia discourse news text in the issue of the rise of PKI by using a qualitative approach, social semiotics method version of M.A.K Halliday. As an online medium that has certain characteristics such as speed, it was clearly seen in this news. The media became biased and ignored journalistic principles, including the principle of online journalism. The three online media that became the object of this study showed images and illustrations which were provocative and not in accordance to the reported facts. The three media have done news construction subjectively and were less professional.

Women politicians have been discriminated against or negatively valued under stereotypes in media coverage and have been given a secondary role compared to male politicians. The article proposes an analysis of the treatment given by digital media to women political leaders. They are from different parties in three countries and the aim is to identify the polarity (positive, neutral or negative) of the information published about them in the media. The text focuses on the cases of Anne Hidalgo and Marine Le Pen, from France, Nicola Sturgeon and Theresa May, from the United Kingdom and Ada Colau and Inés Arrimadas, from Spain. The study develops a computerised sentiment analysis of the information published in two leading digital newspapers in each country, during the month of November 2019. The research, with the analysis of 1100 journalistic pieces, shows that the polarity or valence of the women analysed is predominantly neutral and positive and that the journalistic genres do not determine the media representation of the women studied. On the contrary, the country of study does have a predominant incidence on the way in which women politicians are represented, while the relationship of affinity or antipathy of the Spanish media with the women politicians studied is significant.

AbstractThis article considers the relationship of international law and the media through the prism of human rights. In the first section the international regulation of the media is examined and visions of good, bad, and new media emerge. In the second section, the enquiry is reversed and the article explores the ways in which the media is shaping international legal forms and processes in the field of human rights. This is termed the ‘mediatization of international law’. Yet despite hopes for new media and the Internet to transform international law, the theoretical work of Jodi Dean warns of the danger to democracy of commodification through the spread of ‘communicative capitalism’.

The policies followed by patrimonial states generally involve playing one group against another and are inimical to long-run growth. Social cohesion or closure among rural groups (tenants, part-owners, etc.) provides a mechanism by which the governing elite are likely to find increased opportunities to behave in a developmental way. More strongly, this rural cohesion or closure often compels them to behave in a developmental manner. Such closure is most likely to result from broad based rural development resulting in the creation of extensive social networks via the operation of intermediaries. The prewar experiences of Japan and Korea with land reform are used to illustrate the argument.

“Street culture” is often considered a response to structural factors. However, the relationship between culture and structure has rarely been empirically analyzed. This article analyzes the role of three media representations of American street culture and gangsters—two films and the music of a rap artist—in the street culture of a disadvantaged part of Copenhagen. Based on years of ethnographic fieldwork, this article demonstrates that these media representations are highly valuable to and influential among young men because of their perceived similarity between their intersectional structural positions and those represented in the media. Thus, the article illuminates the interaction between structural and cultural factors in street culture. It further offers a local explanation of the scarcely studied phenomenon of the influence of mass media on street culture, and a novel, media-based, local explanation of global similarities in different street cultures.
