The habitual excellence of Harvey Cushing in a wide variety of achievements and the ease with which he appeared to attain his ends recall Goethe’s remark that for success in any venture ‘you need only to blow on your hands’. His eminence in various ranges of human enterprise, however, was attained only by eager and persistent striving, through hard labour, to realize an ideal of perfection which he carried to every activity in which he engaged. In all civilized countries he was renowned as a surgeon, and to that reputation was added recognition of his large acquaintance with general medicine and with the special field of neurology. He was an important contributor to medical sciences, both as an experimenter in the laboratory and as a studious observer in the hospital. He was a stimulating and a rigorously exacting teacher and trainer of young surgeons, who spread extensively his methods and his spirit. He was a lover and collector of the medical classics and an ardent student of medical history. He was a graceful and effective writer, not only on technical themes in the realm of his professional interests, but also on subjects of concern to the layman. Because of these excellences Dr Cushing was, during his busy life, honoured by universities and learned societies throughout the world. With regard to him, the words from Ecclesiasticus have been quoted: ‘The skill of the physician shall lift up his head: and in the sight of great men he shall be in admiration’.

BACKGROUND Collecting information on the medical history of a patient is an important step during the diagnosing process. Besides the interrogation by the physician, computerized questionnaires are used to collect the data. To facilitate interaction, implementation of digital medical interview assistants (DMIA) using conversational user interfaces (CUI) gain in interest. OBJECTIVE The aim of this research is to assess patient’s and physician’s perceptions towards a DMIA with CUI. Beyond, we want to understand how such DMIA can be used in real-world context, what issues and barriers exist in their usage. METHODS We developed a web-based DMIA with CUI (referred to as AnCha for anamnesis chatbot) as a research prototype in a participative and iterative development process. We conducted a pilot trial in a practice for general medicine. Patient perceptions were collected and physicians were interrogated regarding usefulness of collected information. RESULTS 31 patients were approached, and 9 participants were included in the pilot trial; 3 conversation protocols were used by the physicians to prepare for the encounter. Participants spanned all age groups from digital natives (n=5), and digital workers (n=3) to digital seniors (n=1). Patients can easily interact with AnCha and are willing to provide information to the digital tool. They recognize benefits while using the dialog system compared to the existing process. Important insights into practical implementation and integration into practice workflows could be gained. CONCLUSIONS Providing information on complaints and medical history before the actual encounter is considered useful. In order to be supportive for physicians, information has to be made available in a sufficient time frame before the encounter. Future work has to assess in particular whether AnCha is also well accessible for digital seniors.

The global program to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis created by The World Health organization in 1997 is based on mass administration of single annual doses of diethylcarbamazine ( DEC) plus albendazole in non African regions and of albendazole plus ivermectin in Africa. The usual side effects of DEC treatment include fever, chills, arthralgia, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Albendazole is associated with relatively few side effects consisting of occasional nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, reversible alopecia, elevated aminotransferases and rarely leucopenia and rash. We report a case of polyneuropathy in a young individual following DEC and albendazole during mass drug administration. Keywords: Albendazole; DEC; Polyneuropathy. Prof. Cristo/or L Simionescu was born in Dumbraveni, County of Suceava, Bucovina, Romania on July 17, 1920 and passed away in Jassy on August 6, 2007. He graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Jassy in 1944, obtained the Doctoral Degree in Technical Sciences from the same institution in 1948, and served as a faculty member in Jassy for over fifty (50) years. He held various other positions including Rector, Vice-President and President of the Academy of Romania, and Director of the "Petru Poni" Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry. He has supervised more than one hundred (100) doctoral dissertations, published over eight hundred (800) scientific papers, and authored or co-authored more than twenty-seven (27) hooks. He was a member of many academies and learned societies throughout the world, Editor of many scientific journals, and received many prizes and awards. Prof. Cristo/or L Simionescu served on the Editorial Board of many international scientific periodicals, including the Southern BrazHian Journal of Chemistry. He is generally considered the father of macromolecular chemistry in Romania.

A rapid literature search strategy was conducted for all English language literature published before July 2017. The search was conducted using the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. The search strategy included the keywords ‘colorectal cancer’, ‘epidemiology’, ‘incidence’, ‘mortality’, ‘risk factor’, and ‘world’. In 2012, the highest CRC incidence rates were observed in the Republic of Korea, Slovakia and Hungary while the lowest incidence rates were seen in Singapore, Serbia and Japan. The highest CRC mortality rates in both sexes were seen in Central and Eastern Europe and the lowest mortality rates were found in Middle Division of Africa. The main risk factors for CRC include nutritional factors, past medical history, smoking, socioeconomic status, and family medical history. According to the increasing trend of CRC incidence and mortality in the world, implementation of prevention programs such as screening programs, diet modification, and healthy lifestyle education is necessary. Background: Recently, there has been an increase in life expectancy due to improvements in nutrition, health, and sanitation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the geriatric curriculum in the field of general medicine at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), Iran to improve the quality of services provided to this population in the community. Methods: This was a qualitative study­­. Six educational hospitals and ambulatory centers of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences participated in this study. Within these centers, 15 medical education faculty members and educational experts, 6 medical students, 6 elderly patients and 6 nurses working in the university related to the geriatric field were selected using purposive sampling. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussion and field observations in the teaching hospital and ambulatory setting of SUMS from June 2017 to May 2018.  Based on the qualitative research, the data underwent conventional content analysis and the main themes were developed from this. Results: Three main themes were extracted from the data: effective clinical education, geriatrics curriculum challenges and promotion strategies for geriatric medicine. Subcategories that emerged were a competent curriculum teacher, a challenging program, management of resources, promotion of the program, and the revision required in the curriculum, which were related to other concepts and described in the real-world situation of the geriatric curriculum in the university, as observed in field observations. Conclusions: This study identified three concepts as main themes that can be used to explain how to implement a geriatric curriculum in a medical university. The main contributing factor to different views of the participants was identified as the revision required to the curriculum for integrative care in a geriatric patient. This should be taken into consideration while planning any programs and decisions aimed at education of medical students on this topic.

In today's medical community, when people say the name Herman Boerhaave, most assimilate it to Boerhaave syndrome. His influence on medicine is seen every day in hospitals around the world. His methodologies revolutionized medical education and the way physicians approach the examination of patients. It has been said that during the Age of Reason, he was the “Bearer of the Enlightenment of Medicine.” He is a forgotten father of medicine. To preserve medical history, educators should give students a brief summary of the contributors to medicine to remind us how much of their lives they gave to further medical knowledge.

INTRODUCTION: Fingerprints are one of the most mature biometric technologies and are considered legitimate proofs of evidence in courts of law for human identification all over the world. There is relatively less research has been done for its use in this field of gender identification. Hence, the present study was done to look the correlation between fingertip patterns with the gender of an individual. METHODS: Study was carried out over a period of one month among 200 medical students (100 male & 100 female) belonging to the age group 18-25 years of Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, Dhulikhel, Kavre. RESULTS: Each finger print is unique; loops are the most commonly occurring fingerprint pattern while arches are the least common. Males have a higher incidence of whorls and females have a higher incidence of loops. CONCLUSION: We can conclude that there is an association between distribution of fingerprint patterns and gender and thus prediction of gender of a person is possible based on his fingerprint pattern. Arthur Stewart Eve, who will be remembered mainly for his pioneer work on radioactivity and his lovable character, was born at Silsoe, Bedfordshire, on 22 November 1862, son of John Richard and Frederica (Somers) Eve and, after an active and varied life spent for the most part in Canada, passed away in retirement at Puttenham, Surrey, on 24 March 1948, in his eighty-sixth year. Scholar, teacher, pioneer with Rutherford, soldier and scientific director in the first World War, Eve later was appointed Head of the Department of Physics in McGill University, Montreal, and Dean of the Graduate Faculty. The fine, well-balanced qualities of the man are well presented in the following quotations from an editorial, ‘In a Great McGill Tradition’, which appeared in the Montreal Gazette at the time of his death : ‘In the best sense, he was a university character. He was provocative but not contentious, kindly but not sentimental, critical but not cruel, humorous but not foolish, shrewd but not harsh. As he moved about the campus walks in his last years at McGill, he was a man whose life had been deepened by the vigorous use of the mind on illimitable problems, and mellowed by zest and common sense which had kept his outlook keen and reasonable.’ ‘Dean Eve’s discoveries in radioactivity and in geophysics received their due and full recognition from the highest learned societies of the world, including the Royal Society of London, on whose Council Dr Eve served in his later years. They were the recognition of the fruits of his “voyaging through strange seas of thought”. ‘But these far voyagings, valuable as they were in their discoveries, never took Dr Eve away from the warmth and colour of ordinary human experience. In the soundness of his humanity he looked for his satisfaction: ‘ “Not in Utopia—subterranean fields,— Of some secreted island, Heaven knows where! But in the very world, which is the world Of all of us,—the place where, in the end We find our happiness, or not at all.” ’
