The permeability of the coal body is the key parameter restricting the efficient extraction of coalbed methane, and scholars have analysed it from two angles of the change of stress state and porosity of the coal body. However, there is still a lack of study on the mechanism of gas migration and movement in soft coalbed methane reservoir under the coupling between the true triaxial stress field (maximum principal stress σ 1 > intermediate principal stress σ 2 > minimum principal stress σ 3 ) and the gas pressure field. In this paper, the coal gas adsorption and seepage experiments are conducted through the self-developed true triaxial ‘gas–solid’ coupled coal mass seepage system with gas as the adsorption and seepage medium and coal briquette taking the place of soft coalbed methane reservoirs. Furthermore, the coal gas adsorption deformation model and the permeability evolution model taking gas adsorption into account are developed. Through analysis of both experimental and theoretic results, the main conclusions are drawn as follows: (i) With the increase in gas pressure, the adsorption deformation variation of coal mass is divided into a slow growth zone, a stable growth zone and a rapid growth zone. (ii) The gas adsorption deformation model developed can predict the variation trend of coal mass adsorption volumetric strains for different types of soft coalbeds, and the fitting variance of experimental and theoretical volumetric strains is above 98%. (iii) With the increase in maximum principal stress difference, the coal permeability variation curve shows two obvious turning points, which can be divided into a slow reduction zone, a rapid reduction zone and a steady reduction zone. (iv) The permeability model of coal mass considering the gas adsorption effect can reflect the variation characteristics of permeability in the rapid reduction zone, and the overall fitting variance of experimental and theoretical permeabilities is above 91%. The above results could provide a reliable experimental and theoretical basis for improving coalbed methane extraction rates.

Most soil constitutive models were developed based on the traditional triaxial tests with isotropic assumption, in which the load is applied as the major principal stress direction and the other two principal stresses are symmetric. When such isotropic models are applied to practical analysis, stress induced anisotropy under complex stress state and the middle principal stress effects are often neglected, thus there are many disagreements between the calculated results and the infield testing data. To simulate the practical loading process, true triaxial tests were carried out on geomaterial under three-dimensional stress state. It was found that the stress induced anisotropy effects are remarkable and the middle principal stress effects are obvious because of the initial three-dimensional stress state. Such kind of stress-induced anisotropy could have important impact on the numerical analysis results and should be taken into consideration when developing the constitutive model.

Summary A laboratory study of cryogenic fracturing was performed to test its ability to improve oil/gas recovery from low-permeability reservoirs. Our objective is to develop well-stimulation technologies using cryogenic fluids [e.g., liquid nitrogen (LN)] to increase permeability in a large reservoir volume surrounding wells. The new technology has the potential to reduce formation damage caused by current stimulation methods and minimize or eliminate water usage. The concept of cryogenic fracturing is that a sharp thermal gradient (thermal shock) created at the surfaces of formation rocks by applying cryogenic fluid can cause strong local tensile stress and start fractures. We developed a laboratory system for cryogenic fracturing under true-triaxial loading, with LN-delivery/control and -measurement systems. The loading system simulates confining stresses by independently loading each axis up to approximately 5,000 psi on 8×8×8-in. cubes. Temperature in boreholes and at block surfaces and fluid pressure in boreholes were continuously monitored. Acoustic and pressure-decay measurements were obtained before and at various stages of stimulations. Cubic blocks (8 × 8×8-in.) of Niobrara shale, concrete, and sandstones were tested, and stress levels and anisotropies varied. Three schemes were considered: gas fracturing without cryo-stimulation, gas fracturing after low-pressure cryogen flow-through, and gas fracturing after high-pressure cryogen flow-through. Results from pressure-decay tests show that LN stimulation clearly increases permeability, and repeated stimulations further increase the permeability. Acoustic velocities and amplitudes decreased significantly after cryo-stimulation, indicating fracture creation. In the gas fracturing without the stimulation, breakdown (complete fracturing) occurs suddenly without any initial leaking, and major fracture planes form along the plane containing principal-stress and intermediate-stress directions, as expected theoretically. However, in the gas fracturing after cryogenic stimulations, breakdown occurred gradually and with massive leaking because of thermal fractures created during stimulation. In addition, the major fracture direction does not necessarily follow the plane containing the principal-stress direction, especially at low confining-stress levels. In tests, we observed that cryogenic stimulation seems to disrupt the internal stress field. The increase in borehole temperature after stimulation affects the permeability of the specimen. When a stimulated specimen is still cold, it maintains high permeability because fractures remain open and local thermal tension is maintained near the borehole. When the rock warms back, fractures close and permeability decreases. In these tests, we have not used proppants. Overall, fractures are clearly generated by low- and high-pressure thermal shocks. The added pressure of the high-pressure thermal shocks helps to further propagate cryogenic fractures generated by thermal shock. Breakdown pressure is significantly lowered by LN stimulation, with observed breakdown-pressure reductions up to approximately 40%.

Mechanical vibration can induce coal and gas outburst accidents, and can also promote the exploitation of coalbed methane. In this paper, a vibration-adsorption-desorption experiment system was established, the effects of coal sample particle diameter, gas pressure, and vibration frequency on gas desorption were studied. Mechanical vibration can generate a shear force in the adsorbed gas and promote gas desorption, but there are appropriate vibration parameters. Within the range of experimental parameters, the larger the amplitude, the more favorable for gas desorption. The change rules of gas desorption rate and desorption quantity under different conditions are basically the same, showing a power function shape with time increase, and most of the desorption quantity was completed within the first 5 minutes. The gas desorption rate and desorption quantity were positively related to the gas adsorption pressure. The results have great reference value for preventing gas outbursts and promoting gas exploitation.

Moisture content in coal is an important factor affecting the coal seam gas extraction. It directly affects the storage and flow of gas in bituminous coal. In this paper, the cylindrical bituminous coal cores of Xutuan coal mine in Huaibei coal mine group were studied as experimental objects, using the laboratory self-designed experimental device Gas Adsorption and Strain Testing Apparatus system. The influence of the bituminous coal moisture content on gas adsorption characteristics was studied. Drying experiments of coal samples showed that they lose the original moisture content following the exponential decay function of time. At wetting, the saturated moisture content in coal samples increased following the Exponential Association function of time. The experimental results show that the average original moisture content and average saturated moisture content of raw coal samples are 1.3 and 2.4%, respectively. On this basis, the gas adsorption experiments on samples with different moisture contents under different gas pressures were carried out. With the moisture content increase, the gas adsorption capacity and saturation value decreased and the decrease rate gradually reduced. The single exponential decay function describes the gas adsorption capacity dependence on moisture content. Moisture content also affects the adsorption deformation of bituminous coal. At high moisture content, the adsorption deformation of bituminous coal is less.

In this paper, we present a coupled fluid flow and geomechanics model for simulating coalbed methane recovery. In the model, the fluid flow process is simulated with a triple porosity/dual permeability representation, and the coupling effects of effective stress and matrix swelling/shrinkage approach are simulated with a coupled fluid flow, geomechanics and gas adsorption/desorption model. The mathematical model is implemented with a fully implicit finite volume method and simulation is conducted to evaluate the effect of coupled fluid flow, geomechanics, and gas adsorption/desorption.

The intermediate principal stress effect of the rock has been demonstrated. By analyzing true triaxial test results of Dunham dolomite and Mizuho trachyte, we studied relationship between minimum principal stress and the rock strength under the same intermediate principal stress coefficient, and the relationship between intermediate principal stress and the rock strength under the same minimum principal stress condition. Research shows that the minimum principal stress has a linear relation with the rock strength, the intermediate principal stress coefficient of a quadratic function relation with the rock strength. And the mathematic expression of the intermediate principal stress effect function was calculated.

To simulate the failure of loess under undrained condition in the actual engineering,a series of isotropic consolidation and shear tests with different intermediate principal stress ratio b under constant water content were performed on intact loess with various initial suctions using the true tri-axial apparatus for unsaturated soil. The relationship between the saturations and initial suctions, the characteristics of yield, suction and strength of unsaturated intact loess were studied. The results show that the initial suctions and the suctions after the isotropic consolidation decrease with the increase of saturations. The suctions increase with the increase of the intermediate principal stress ratio b at the true triaxial shear failure. The net mean yield stress increase with the increase of the initial suction. The yield suction is a constant, but not always equal to the maximum suction that the soil specimen experienced in the history. The strength of soil increase with the increase of the net confining pressure, initial suction and the intermediate principal stress ratio b.

In order to grasp the effect of soft and hard coal pore structure on gas adsorption characteristics, based on fractal geometry theory, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption and constant temperature adsorption test methods are used to test the pore structure characteristics of soft coal and its influence on gas adsorption characteristics. We used box dimension algorithm to measure the fractal dimension and distribution of coal sample microstructure. The research results show that the initial nitrogen adsorption capacity of soft coal is greater than that of hard coal, and the adsorption hysteresis loop of soft coal is more obvious than that of hard coal. And the adsorption curve rises faster in the high relative pressure section. The specific surface area and pore volume of soft coal are larger than those of hard coal. The number of pores is much larger than that of hard coal. In particular, the superposition of the adsorption force field in the micropores and the diffusion in the mesopores enhance the adsorption potential of soft coal. Introducing the concept of adsorption residence time, it is concluded that more adsorption sites on the surface of soft coal make the adsorption and residence time of gas on the surface of soft coal longer. Fractal characteristics of the soft coal surface are more obvious. The saturated adsorption capacity of soft coal and the rate of reaching saturation adsorption are both greater than those of hard coal. The research results of this manuscript will provide a theoretical basis for in-depth analysis of the adsorption/desorption mechanism of coalbed methane in soft coal seams and the formulation of practical coalbed methane control measures.

To study the safety issues caused by coal mine excavation, self-developed simulation of earth interior atmosphere and sound test system was used to perform true triaxial loading and unloading tests of coal. An acoustic emission detection system was used to record the damage evolution trend of coal under different intermediate principal stress states. The experimental results show that in the true triaxial unloading test, as the intermediate principal stress increases, the failure state of coal changes from shear failure to partial shear tension failure, finally leading to overall yield failure. In the stress-strain curves, with the increase in intermediate principal stress, the strain in the direction of intermediate principal stress gradually changes from compression to expansion, and typical expansion occurs. The Mogi–Coulomb strength criterion better reflects the strength failure characteristics of coal during unloading. The stress-acoustic emission diagrams show that the increase in intermediate principal stress causes the internal cracks of the coal to grow unsteadily and exponentially, and the increase in intermediate principal stress makes the coal lose its ability to continue to bear the load. Studying the influence of the intermediate principal stress on the mechanical properties of coal has practical significance for coal mine safety production.
