The uses of wood: long term prospects

The longer term prospects for the use of wood depend upon the continued availability of suitable material and the ability of wood products to compete in cost and performance with comparable products made from other materials. The availability of both hardwoods and softwoods is considered against a background of a world usage which is rising at just under 2 % per annum and the conclusion is reached that sufficient wood will be available to meet the growing demands for the next hundred years or so although the nature and quality of the material available will not be the same as at present. The importance of successful regeneration and renewal of forests, particularly in tropical areas, is emphasized in affecting the future for wood beyond that term. The competition from other materials has been considered for various usage categories. For structural uses the prospect is good; a number of factors indicate a growth in structural usage, and competition from other structural materials is not likely to be severe while supplies of adequate material are available. The use of timber for joinery, furniture, cladding and utility markets has been reduced in recent years, particularly as a result of developments in plastics technology. There is a need to develop products in which wood is combined with other materials to give the required properties. It is expected that the use of wood for decorative purposes will continue in high demand. The importance of developing new products, particularly utilizing the substantial amount of waste available, and of marketing wooden products which are more closely designed to meet consumer needs, is emphasized.

The long term management of a production asset raises several major issues among which rank the technical management of the plant, its economics and the fleet level perspective one has to adopt. Decision makers are therefore faced with the need to define long term policies (up to the end of asset operation) which take into account multiple criteria including safety (which is paramount) and performance. In this paper we first remind the reader of the EDF three-level methodology for asset management. We then focus on the knowledge model and on the software tools that implement this methodology in order to gather, preserve, share, maintain and exploit the expert knowledge needed for asset management and to allow decision makers to define, evaluate and analyze long term plant operation and maintenance policies. Lastly, as the quality of the processed plant level evaluations (operation & maintenance strategies are evaluated, at a plantlevel, through a set of technical and economic indicators) and their interpretation relies on the quality of the knowledge captured in the tools, we focus on the definition of a “adaptative” user interface — based on Electronic Structured Documents — that allows technical/strategic experts and decision makers to consult the useful pieces of knowledge in a context dependent way. Such an interface, which, in a near future, should be fully implemented in the tools will facilitate the validation of the knowledge-base content and the analysis of the processed results.

The purpose of this paper is to examine and test the mediator of customer interaction capabilities in relationship with quality market intelligence (MIQ) and customer centric commitment (CCC) with the new products performance (NPP). This paper chooses 184 micro retail fashions and examines the relationship of MIQ, CCC with CIC and NPP. The findings indicate that MIQ only affects the NPP, while the CCC is not. Nonetheless, CIC actually mediate the relationship between MIQ and CCC with NPP. By examining the diverse learning literature market, CRM, NPD and entrepreneurship, this paper offers a unique analysis on the quality of market intelligence and customer centric commitment and their impact on customer interaction capability and performance of new products. Conceptual and empirical discussion results to extend previous research on market orientation culture on SMEs.

Chronic polyposis rhinosinusitis (CPRS) is an important medical and social problem due to its prevalence, combination with other diseases (bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis), prolonged recurrent course, which leads to a decrease in the quality of life and performance of patients. Bronchopulmonary, rhinogenic orbital and intracranial complications arising against the background of chronic sinusitis not only worsen the quality of life of patients, but also sometimes lead to long-term disability, and sometimes to disability. The results of our study demonstrated that the distribution of the genotypes of polymorphisms of all genes corresponded to the expected, i.e., in this case, the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium is fulfilled in both groups. Both samples rs2243250 of the IL4 gene were characterized by high frequencies of the unfavorable C allele and the heterozygous T / C genotype, rs3212227 of the IL12B gene of the A allele and the heterozygous A / C genotype, rs1800895 592 C> A in the IL10 gene of the A, C alleles, and heterozygous C rs5743708 in the TLR2 gene of the C allele and the heterozygous C / T genotype, hence the high level of genetic variability of the studied genes.

In this paper, the authors investigated the evolution of ERP-type integrated information systems and analysed the presentation of their main concepts and features, limited to the performance and sustainable development of the enterprise. Integrated ERP systems play an important role in managing and conducting the day-to-day business of an organization (irrespective of being small, medium or large companies). The research method used to justify the impact of ERP systems on the performance and sustainability of the organization was the archive analysis (review of the literature), doubled by a quantitative empirical research based on a questionnaire. The analysed information was collected from over 20 papers by Romanian and foreign authors, published in various scientific journals, specialized books and conference proceedings, as well as based on the answers received based on a questionnaire intended to prove that the integrated ERP systems contribute to improving the sustainable development and performance of the organization, by reducing costs and protecting the environment, increasing the quality of decision-making, productivity and data volume management. Following the study, the authors concluded that the evaluation of the processing of the volume of data generated by ERP systems, as well as the consistency, quality and clarity of information are representative factors on the impact of ERP systems on the sustainable development of organizations, in order to ensure the performance of the organization in the short, medium and long term.

The endemicity of malaria in tropical areas of the world persists, especially in countries south of Saharan Africa. The efforts and concerns invested by the World Health Organization and other health agencies to eradicate malaria are commendable. However, in spite of all these efforts, the loss in economic and human resources continues. In a previous report, the long-term health effects of insecticide-impregnated bednet (IIBN) use were highlighted with the expectation of attracting serious thoughts and further research on the issue. This present paper is an update on that expectation. Results from a comprehensive literature search show that not much work has been done on the effects of long-term exposure to IIBNs in combating malarial infection. The efficacy of IIBNs is not in question. What is in question is whether long-term exposure to IIBNs have any health effects. The aims and outcomes of the research found in the literature on the subject to date seem to support only the efficacy of the temporal use of plain bednets, but not the use of IIBNs, and do not tell much about the long-term effects of IIBN exposure. All pesticides are toxic by nature and present risks of adverse effects. While there is agreement that IIBNs can be effective in reducing malarial morbidity and mortality under field trials, a number of factors relating to their long-term-exposure health effects have yet to be determined. Further reliable research projects are recommended urgently. However, some of the anticipated behavioral effects caused by insecticidal use will be avoided by the use of untreated nets instead.

SummaryStudies on long-term efficacy and safety should be a main concern in the evaluation of novel antipsychotics. The present paper is a review of important issues related to the design and performance of such trials. The variability of the natural course of schizophrenia, the variability in treatment response, and the variability of actions of different neuroleptics need to be considered. Long-term studies need to address maintenance of efficacy, prevention of relapse and recurrence, health economics, quality of life and a large number of safety issues in order to get approval for new drug applications and reimbursement on expensive new medicines. Assessment instruments for efficacy, tolerability and safety, need to be supplemented with rating scales for various aspects of psychopathology (positive, negative, deficit symptoms), social and work functioning, drug induced mental side effects, quality of life and accounts of total treatment costs.

Abstract Customers’ complaints represent an opportunity for any organization who wants to improve relationship with customers, to find out the problems existing into organization and the way to solve them, to improve the amount of knowledge and the desire, beliefs, and needs of customers. All those are made in order to increase value for organization and also for the customers. Having objective information, updated, clear and sincere, the organization may improve the quality of their products and services it offers. Thus, any complaints may be regarded as a gift not as a negative feedback from the customers, or as a two-way feedback based on trust and collaboration. A gift which will bring performance on long term based on win-win situations. In this article we will disseminate the literature in the field and also we will analyze the results of a research made on 150 respondents who analyzed 10 institutions, the willingness to recommend them to other customers and the problem existing into these institutions, making a plan to overcome them. The objective of this analysis is to understand the role of customers’ complaints in improving the quality of the products and services and of the value obtained both for customers and organizations.

Durability and efficiency are important conditions for long-term operation ofroad transport companies. In the operating aspect, the first parameter determines the quality of the manufacturing capacity and the ability to provide repetitive transport processes. The second parameter affects the long-term ability to use resources and the subsequent results of operations. The conducted study on stability and efficiency of the operating systems of road companies indicates the existence of, on the one hand, a large variation of approaches, and on the other, a clear dominance of intense and efficient behaviour in combination with ensuring the repetitiveness of processes.
