Malassezia is a lipophilic cutaneous commensal yeast and associated with various skin disorders. The yeast also causes bloodstream infection via intravascular catheters and can be detected even in human gut microbiota. Ambient pH is one of the major factors that affect the physiology and metabolism of several pathogenic microorganisms. Although dynamic changes of pH environment in different parts of the body is a great challenge for Malassezia to confront, the role that ambient pH plays in Malassezia is largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of ambient pH on physiology and expression of lipases in M. furfur grown under different pH conditions. The yeast was able to grow in media ranging from pH 4 to 10 without morphological alteration. Elevation in pH value enhanced the extracellular lipase activity but decreased that of intracellular lipase. The qPCR results revealed that a set of functional lipase genes, LIP3-6, were constitutively expressed regardless of pH conditions or exposure time. Based on the data, we conclude that the external pH plays a promotional role in the secretion of lipases but exerts less effect on transcription of the genes and morphology in M. furfur.

Abstract. Thecosome pteropods (shelled pelagic molluscs) can play an important role in the food web of various ecosystems and play a key role in the cycling of carbon and carbonate. Since they harbor an aragonitic shell, they could be very sensitive to ocean acidification driven by the increase of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The impact of changes in the carbonate chemistry was investigated on Limacina helicina, a key species of Arctic ecosystems. Pteropods were kept in culture under controlled pH conditions corresponding to pCO2 levels of 350 and 760 μatm. Calcification was estimated using a fluorochrome and the radioisotope 45Ca. It exhibits a 28% decrease at the pH value expected for 2100 compared to the present pH value. This result supports the concern for the future of pteropods in a high-CO2 world, as well as of those species dependent upon them as a food resource. A decline of their populations would likely cause dramatic changes to the structure, function and services of polar ecosystems.

The bioavailability of trace elements (TEs) is one of the major factors for successful plant production and environmental protection. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which TEs are bioavailable and which of the basic soil parameters affect bioavailability. The survey included agricultural soil samples taken from 240 locations on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, where the soil analytics were carried out. On the basis of the analyzed data the prediction models were derived based on the Freundlich model, showing the dependence between trace elements (TEs) extracted using the DTPA buffer solution in relation to the trace elements extracted using an aqua regia, the organic matter content (SOM), the clay fractions content, and soil pH. On one part of the samples, the prediction models were separated on the basis of a suspension for determining the pH in H2O and 1M KCl. The model was applied for the following TEs: Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Cu. The content of the pseudo total forms of TEs statistically significantly influenced the bioavailability of TEs in all prediction models for all studied elements. The pH value statistically significantly affected the bioavailability of Ni, Mn, Pb, and Cu also in all prediction models. The impact of SOM and clay varied depending on the model and TEs. Multiple linear regression showed that the prediction models for TE Cu (R2 = 0.763–0.848) were the most reliable and that the bioavailability of Cu was significantly influenced by all the studied soil parameters except clay. Reliable results were also shown by the prediction models for TE Pb, but the values of the determination coefficient and investigated parameters that influenced the bioavailability varied depending on the model. The derived models for TE Mn, Zn, and Ni were less reliable (R2 is approximately 50% or less), and the effect of the tested parameters on bioavailability varied depending on the model and TEs.

One of the objectives of accounting education at South African universities is to prepare students for positions as professional accountants. The bulk of current education at South African universities focuses on the acquisition of technical knowledge through courses or modules focused on financial accounting. The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants, which is the dominant professional accounting body in South Africa, is mainly responsible for prescribing the body of knowledge that is taught. However, current accounting education is challenged by major changes in the environment in which professional accountants are operating. One of the major factors that affect this environment is the impact of information technology on the accounting profession. The purpose of this article is twofold: firstly, to investigate the extent of the changing environment in which professional accountants will need to operate in future, focusing specifically on information technology; and secondly, to determine the need for future research that will identify strategies for closing the gap between the current education of accountants at South African universities and what will be expected from them in their profession in future.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of Shariah governance and corporate governance (CG) on the risk management practices (RMPs) of local Islamic banks and foreign Islamic banks operating in Malaysia. The Shariah governance comprises the Shariah review (SR) and Shariah audit (SA) variables. The study also evaluates the level of RMPs, CG, SR, and SA between these two type of banks. With the aid of SPSS version 20, the items for RMPs, CG, SR, and SA were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA). From the PCA, one component or factor was extracted each for the CG, SR, and RMPs while another two factors were extracted for the SA. Primary data was collected using a self-administered survey questionnaire. The questionnaire covers four aspects ; CG, SR, SA, and RMPs. The data received from the 300 usable questionnaires were subjected to correlation and regression analyses as well as an independent t-test. The result of correlation analysis shows that all the four variables have large positive correlations with each other indicating a strong and significant relationship between them. From the regression analysis undertaken, CG, SR, and SA together explained 52.3 percent of the RMPs and CG emerged as the most influential variable that impacts the RMPs. The independent t-test carried out shows that there were significant differences in the CG and SA between the local and foreign Islamic banks. However, there were no significant differences between the two types of the bank in relation to SR and RMPs. The study has contributed to the body of knowledge and is beneficial to academicians, industry players, regulators, and other stakeholders.

Abstract This paper deals with the characteristics of the scientific research of the renowned Slovak linguist Klára Buzássyová who – as a lecturer at the Studia Academica Slovaca summer school of Slovak language and culture – presented to foreign students the specifics of Slovak lexis and their function in speech within the context of intraand interlingual relationships. In her lectures, she helped students to see Slovak as a developped and modern Central European language which has its own genetic and typological properties and as a language capable of reacting to dynamic changes emerging from the communication needs of language users while respecting current trends in European language policy. Klára Buzássyová presented students with the latest results of her linguistic research and discussed the issues regarding the dynamics of vocabulary with an emphasis on the methods of wordformation, motivation, and the impact on the semantic and stylistic value of lexical units. Her papers, published in the Studia Academica Slovaca proceedings from 1980 to 2001 presented her scientific orientation and became an inspiration for the linguistic and didactic conception of Slovak as a foreign language in the context of the development of Slovak studies in Slovakia as well as abroad.

Introduction. The impact on the body of such factors of the production environment as coal-rock dust and fluorine compounds leads to certain shift s in strict indicators of homeostasis at the system level. Maintaining the relative constancy of the internal environment of the body is provided by the functional consistency of all organs and systems, the leading of which is the liver. Organ repair plays a crucial role in restoring the structure of genetic material and maintaining normal cell viability. When this mechanism is damaged, the compensatory capabilities of the organ are disrupted, homeostasis is disrupted at the cellular and organizational levels, and the development of the main pathological processes is noted. The aim of the study is to compare the morphological mechanisms of maintaining structural homeostasis of the liver in the dynamics of the impact on the body of coal-rock dust and sodium fluoride.Materials and methods. Experimental studies were conducted on adult white male laboratory rats. Features of morphological mechanisms for maintaining structural homeostasis of the liver in the dynamics of exposure to coal-rock dust and sodium fluoride were studied on experimental models of pneumoconiosis and fluoride intoxication. For histological examination in experimental animals, liver sampling was performed after 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 weeks of the experiment.Results. The specificity of morphological changes in the liver depending on the harmful production factor was revealed. It is shown that chronic exposure to coal-rock dust and sodium fluoride is characterized by the development of similar morphological changes in the liver and its vessels from the predominance of the initial compensatory-adaptive to pronounced violations of the stromal and parenchymal components. Long-term inhalation of coal-rock dust at 1–3 weeks of seeding triggers adaptive mechanisms in the liver in the form of increased functional activity of cells, formation of double-core hepatocytes, activation of immunocompetent cells and endotheliocytes, ensuring the preservation of the parenchyma and the general morphostructure of the organ until the 12th week of the experiment. Exposure to sodium fluoride leads to early disruption of liver compensatory mechanisms and the development of dystrophic changes in the parenchyma with the formation of necrosis foci as early as the 6th week of the experiment.Conclusions. The study of mechanisms for compensating the liver structure in conditions of long-term exposure to coal-rock dust and sodium fluoride, as well as processes that indicate their failure, and the timing of their occurrence, is of theoretical and practical importance for developing recommendations for the timely prevention and correction of pathological conditions developing in employees of the aluminum and coal industry. The authors declare no conflict of interests.
