The recent outbreak of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) caused serious challenges to the human society in China and across the world. COVID-19 induced pneumonia in human hosts and carried a highly inter-person contagiousness. The COVID-19 patients may carry severe symptoms, and some of them may even die of major organ failures. This study utilized the machine learning algorithms to build the COVID-19 severeness detection model. Support vector machine (SVM) demonstrated a promising detection accuracy after 32 features were detected to be significantly associated with the COVID-19 severeness. These 32 features were further screened for inter-feature redundancies. The final SVM model was trained using 28 features and achieved the overall accuracy 0.8148. This work may facilitate the risk estimation of whether the COVID-19 patients would develop the severe symptoms. The 28 COVID-19 severeness associated biomarkers may also be investigated for their underlining mechanisms how they were involved in the COVID-19 infections.

According to the statistics of maritime collision accidents over the last five years (2016–2020), 95% of the total maritime collision accidents are caused by human factors. Machine learning algorithms are an emerging approach in judging the risk of collision among vessels and supporting reliable decision-making prior to any behaviors for collision avoidance. As the result, it can be a good method to reduce errors caused by navigators’ carelessness. This article aims to propose an enhanced machine learning method to estimate ship collision risk and to support more reliable decision-making for ship collision risk. In order to estimate the ship collision risk, the conventional support vector machine (SVM) was applied. Regardless of the advantage of the SVM to resolve the uncertainty problem by using the collected ships’ parameters, it has inherent weak points. In this study, the relevance vector machine (RVM), which can present reliable probabilistic results based on Bayesian theory, was applied to estimate the collision risk. The proposed method was compared with the results of applying the SVM. It showed that the estimation model using RVM is more accurate and efficient than the model using SVM. We expect to support the reasonable decision-making of the navigator through more accurate risk estimation, thus allowing early evasive actions.

The aim of this article is to enhance performance monitoring of a two-stroke electronically controlled ship propulsion engine on the operating envelope. This is achieved by setting up a machine learning model capable of monitoring influential operating parameters and predicting the fuel consumption. Model is tested with different machine learning algorithms, namely linear regression, multilayer perceptron, Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Random Forests (RF). Upon verification of modelling framework and analysing the results in order to improve the prediction accuracy, the best algorithm is selected based on standard evaluation metrics, i.e. Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Relative Absolute Error (RAE). Experimental results show that, by taking an adequate combination and processing of relevant sensory data, SVM exhibit the lowest RMSE 7.1032 and RAE 0.5313%. RF achieve the lowest RMSE 22.6137 and RAE 3.8545% in a setting when minimal number of input variables is considered, i.e. cylinder indicated pressures and propulsion engine revolutions. Further, article deals with the detection of anomalies of operating parameters, which enables the evaluation of the propulsion engine condition and the early identification of failures and deterioration. Such a time-dependent, self-adopting anomaly detection model can be used for comparison with the initial condition recorded during the test and sea run or after survey and docking. Finally, we propose a unified model structure, incorporating fuel consumption prediction and anomaly detection model with on-board decision-making process regarding navigation and maintenance.

Abstract Despite its high accuracy to detect the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) approach possesses several limitations (e.g., the lengthy invasive procedure, the reagent availability, and the requirement of specialized laboratory, equipment, and trained staffs). We developed and employed a low-cost, noninvasive method to rapidly sniff out the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) based on a portable electronic nose (GeNose C19) integrating metal oxide semiconductor gas sensor array, optimized feature extraction, and machine learning models. This approach was evaluated in profiling tests involving a total number of 615 breath samples (i.e., 333 positive and 282 negative COVID-19 confirmed by RT-qPCR) obtained from 83 patients in two hospitals located in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Four different machine learning algorithms (i.e., linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machine (SVM), stacked multilayer perceptron (MLP), and deep neural network (DNN)) were utilized to identify the top-performing pattern recognition methods and to obtain high system detection accuracy (88–95%), sensitivity (86–94%), specificity (88–95%) levels from the testing datasets. Our results suggest that GeNose C19 can be considered a highly potential breathalyzer for fast COVID-19 screening.

Abstract: As Plato once rightfully said, ‘Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.’ Music has always been an important art form, and more so in today’s science-driven world. Music genre classification paves the way for other applications such as music recommender models. Several approaches could be used to classify music genres. In this literature, we aimed to build a machine learning model to classify the genre of an input audio file using 8 machine learning algorithms and determine which algorithm is the best suitable for genre classification. We have obtained an accuracy of 91% using the XGBoost algorithm. Diabetes Detection has been one of the many challenges which is being faced by the medical as well as technological communities. The principles of machine learning and its algorithms is used in order to detect the possibility of a diabetic patient based on their level of glucose concentration , insulin levels and other medically point of view required test reports. The basic diabetes detection model uses Bayesian classification machine learning algorithm, but even though the model is able to detect diabetes, the efficiency is not acceptable at all times because of the drawbacks of the single algorithm of the model. A Hybrid Machine Learning Model is used to overcome the drawbacks produced by a single algorithm model. A Hybrid Model is constructed by implementing multiple applicable machine learning algorithms such as the SVM model and Bayesian’s Classification model or any other models in order to overcome drawbacks faced by each other and also provide their mutually contributed efficiency. In a perfect case scenario the new hybrid machine learning model will be able to provide more efficiency as compared to the old Bayesian’s classification model.


Now a day’s human relations are maintained by social media networks. Traditional relationships now days are obsolete. To maintain in association, sharing ideas, exchange knowledge between we use social media networking sites. Social media networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc are available in the communication environment. Through Twitter media users share their opinions, interests, knowledge to others by messages. At the same time some of the user’s misguide the genuine users. These genuine users are also called solicited users and the users who misguidance are called spammers. These spammers post unwanted information to the non spam users. The non spammers may retweet them to others and they follow the spammers. To avoid this spam messages we propose a methodology by us using machine learning algorithms. To develop our approach used a set of content based features. In spam detection model we used Support vector machine algorithm(SVM) and Naive bayes classification algorithm. To measure the performance of our model we used precision, recall and F measure metrics.

In today’s security landscape, advanced threats are becoming increasingly difficult to detect as the pattern of attacks expands. Classical approaches that rely heavily on static matching, such as blacklisting or regular expression patterns, may be limited in flexibility or uncertainty in detecting malicious data in system data. This is where machine learning techniques can show their value and provide new insights and higher detection rates. The behavior of botnets that use domain-flux techniques to hide command and control channels was investigated in this research. The machine learning algorithm and text mining used to analyze the network DNS protocol and identify botnets were also described. For this purpose, extracted and labeled domain name datasets containing healthy and infected DGA botnet data were used. Data preprocessing techniques based on a text-mining approach were applied to explore domain name strings with n-gram analysis and PCA. Its performance is improved by extracting statistical features by principal component analysis. The performance of the proposed model has been evaluated using different classifiers of machine learning algorithms such as decision tree, support vector machine, random forest, and logistic regression. Experimental results show that the random forest algorithm can be used effectively in botnet detection and has the best botnet detection accuracy.

Abstract. Flood forecasting based on water level modeling is an essential non-structural measure against compound flooding over the globe. With its vulnerability increased under climate change, every coastal area became urgently needs a water level model for better flood risk management. Unfortunately, for local water management agencies in developing countries building such a model is challenging due to the limited computational resources and the scarcity of observational data. Here, we attempt to solve the issue by proposing an integrated hydrodynamic and machine learning approach to predict compound flooding in those areas. As a case study, this integrated approach is implemented in Pontianak, the densest coastal urban area over the Kapuas River delta, Indonesia. Firstly, we built a hydrodynamic model to simulate several compound flooding scenarios, and the outputs are then used to train the machine learning model. To obtain a robust machine learning model, we consider three machine learning algorithms, i.e., Random Forest, Multi Linear Regression, and Support Vector Machine. The results show that this integrated scheme is successfully working. The Random Forest performs as the most accurate algorithm to predict flooding hazards in the study area, with RMSE = 0.11 m compared to SVM (RMSE = 0.18 m) and MLR (RMSE = 0.19 m). The machine-learning model with the RF algorithm can predict ten out of seventeen compound flooding events during the testing phase. Therefore, the random forest is proposed as the most appropriate algorithm to build a reliable ML model capable of assessing the compound flood hazards in the area of interest.

Detection of lane-change behaviour is critical to driving safety, especially on highways. In this paper, we proposed a method and designed a learning-based detection model of lane-change behaviour in highway environment, which only needs the vehicle to be equipped with velocity and direction sensors or each section of the highway to have a video camera. First, based on the Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) Interstate 80 Freeway Dataset, we analyzed the relevant features of lane-changing behaviour and preprocessed the data and then used machine learning algorithms to select the suitable features for lane-change detection. According to the result of feature selection, we chose the lateral velocity of the vehicle as the lane-change feature and used machine learning algorithms to learn the lane-change behaviour of the vehicle to detect it. From the dataset, continuous data of 14 vehicles with frequent lane changes were selected for experimental analysis. The experimental results show that the designed KNN lane-change detection model has the best performance with detection accuracy between 89.57% and 100% on the selected dataset, which can well complete the vehicle lane-change detection task.

The KDD Cup '99 is commonly used dataset for training and testing IDS machine learning algorithms. Some of the major downsides of the dataset are the distribution and the proportions of U2R and R2L instances, which represent the most dangerous attack types, as well as the existence of R2L attack instances identical to normal traffic. This enforces minor category detection complexity and causes problems while building a machine learning model capable of detecting these attacks with sufficiently low false negative rate. This paper presents a new support vector machine based intrusion detection system that classifies unknown data instances according both to the feature values and weight factors that represent importance of features towards the classification. Increased detection rate and significantly decreased false negative rate for U2R and R2L categories, that have a very few instances in the training set, have been empirically proven.
