Incorporating practical application in graduate introductory public health courses

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the utility of a redesigned course assessment in a required, introductory Master of Public Health (MPH) course to demonstrate competency achievement through practical application. School of public health curricula are informed by competency-based education (CBE) to prepare students for the field. This is a challenge in introductory courses as traditional assessments do not translate into practical application of knowledge. Design/methodology/approach – This retrospective post-test-only evaluation examined a practice-based, multi-disciplinary assessment utilized in Fall 2014 (n = 63 students). Web-based surveys were administered three months after the course to participating students (n = 33), the teaching team or teaching teams (n = 7) and organization representatives (n = 3) to evaluate the utility of the assessment. Questions were analyzed descriptively using chi-square tests, where applicable responses were compared across groups. Findings – Results indicate that a practice-based assessment in an introductory MPH course may enhance student learning by fostering deeper appreciation and application of course content while more closely reflecting the collaborative, multi-disciplinary and problem-solving nature of practice. The assessment may also increase the depth of competency achievement and career preparedness. Practical implications – Institutions that are guided by CBE, train students for multi-disciplinary practice and are impacted by the changing landscape of the field may want to consider course assessments that mimic practice to best prepare students. Originality/value – Course assessments should be evaluated to ensure they appropriately measure competency achievement. This evaluation provides multiple perspectives on the process and outcome of a practice-based course assessment.

Abstract Background The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a common graduate-level professional degree that is offered by Canadian Universities. To date, few studies have examined competency-based MPH education in Canada. Objective To examine the degree to which MPH programs' course descriptions align with the Public Health Agency of Canada's (PHAC) core competency categories in order to identify strengths and training gaps in such programs across Canada. Methods A content analysis of MPH programs in Canada was conducted from July 2019 to November 2019. A sampling frame of programs was obtained from a list from the PHAC website. Program information, including mandatory and elective course descriptions was extracted from each program's website and analyzed in NVivo 12. Course descriptions were independently categorized by two researchers into one or more of the seven categories of the core competencies outlined by PHAC. Results We identified 18 universities with MPH programs with 267 courses across Canada. Thematic analysis revealed that 100% of programs had coursework that addressed the “Public Health Sciences” and “Assessment and Analysis” categories; 93% addressed “Policy and Program Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation”; 67% addressed each of “Communication,” “Leadership,” and “Partnerships, Collaboration, and Advocacy”; and only 56% had course descriptions addressing “Diversity and Inclusiveness.” Conclusions We find that Canadian MPH programs may lack course offerings addressing core competency categories relating to diversity and inclusiveness, communication, and leadership. Our findings were limited in scope as we relied on program Web sites; thus, further research should explore course content in more depth than this course description analysis allowed and identify ways to close the MPH curricular gaps we identified. Key messages Further research should be conducted to determine if the current model of competency education in Canada is successfully guiding MPH programs in meeting local and international workforce demands. Continued discussion is needed to raise the importance of MPH competency-based education in Canada.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to propose an alternative approach to the think-pair-share active learning method and assess it for outcomes.Design/methodology/approachThis paper evaluates student knowledge of the course content presented in the study (data analytics and artificial intelligence) using a pre- and post-test process with control (lecture-based) and test (active learning) groups. A mixed method approach was used. The quantitative portion included the test scores being analyzed statistically. The qualitative portion included analyzing the open-ended question on the post-test.FindingsThe results note that the active learning exercise improves student learning outcomes in a statistically significant manner (p < 0.001). The open-ended question on the post-test provides positive student feedback.Originality/valueThe active learning exercise used in this study offers an alternate approach to the “think” and “pair” portions of the think-pair-share method and determines whether learning outcomes are improved after implementation of the alternative method.

AbstractIntroductionLimited research has focused on the safety and security of First Responders and Receivers, including clinicians, hospital workers, public safety officials, community volunteers, and other lay personnel, during public health emergencies. These providers are, in some cases, at greater peril during large-scale disasters due to their lack of training and inadequate resources to handle major influxes of patients. Exemplified in the 1995 Tokyo sarin gas attacks and the 2008 Wenchuan earthquakes, lack of training results in poor outcomes for both patients and First Receivers.ObjectiveThe improvement of knowledge and comfort level of First Receivers preparing for a medical disaster via an affordable, repeatable emergency preparedness training (EPT) curriculum.MethodsA 5-hour EPT curriculum was developed including nine learning objectives, 18 competencies, and 34 performance objectives. Following brief didactic and small group sessions, interprofessional teams of four to six trainees were observed in a large patient simulator designed to recreate environmentally challenging (ie, flood evacuation), multi-patient scenarios using a novel technique developed to utilize trainees as actors. Trained observers assessed successful completion of 16 individual and 18 team performance objectives. Prior to training, team members completed a 24-question knowledge assessment, a demographic survey, and a comfort level self-assessment. Following training, trainees repeated the 24 questions, self-assessment, and course assessment.ResultsOne hundred ninety-five participants completed the course between November 2012 and August 2013. One hundred ninety-one (98.5%), 150 (76.9%), and 66 (33.8%) participants completed the pretest, post-test, and course assessment, respectively. The mean (SD) percentage of correct answers between the pretest and post-test increased from 46.3 (13.4) to 75.3 (12.2), P < .0001. Thirty-eight participants (19.5%) reported more than three hours of disaster EPT each year while 157 participants (80.5%) reported three hours or less of yearly EPT. Sixty-six (100%) reported the course relevant to care providers and 61 (92.4%) highly recommended the course. Comfort level increased from 37.0/100 (n = 192) before training to 76.3/100 (n = 145) after training.ConclusionThe Center for Health Professional Training and Emergency Response's (CHPTER's) 5-hour EPT curriculum for patient care providers recreates simultaneous multi-actor disasters, measures EPT performance, and improves trainee knowledge and comfort level to save patient and provider lives during a disaster, via an affordable, repeatable EPT curriculum. Abstract: Oxytocin Massage, Breastfeedingadequacy. Factors that can increase breast milk production include frequency of breastfeeding, nutrition, rest and sleep patterns, psychological, and breastfeeding and breast care techniques. Breast care is useful in stimulating the breast, which affects the pituitary to release the hormone prolactin and oxytocin. This oxytocin massage is done to stimulate the reflex oxytocin or reflex let down. The goals of thisreasearchisto know the relationship of oxytocin massage to breast milk sufficiency in the Working Area of Karangdowo Public Health Center. This research is quantitative research by using preexperimental research design with Post test type only with control design. The population of this research was all postpartum day 1-3 in Working Area of Public Health Center Karangdowo from May until June 2017. Technique sampling used accidental sampling and technique of data analysis used Chi Square. Results of this reasearch are characteristics of mothers covering the age of 20-35 years, education, namely junior high and high school, the work of housewives and parity is multiparous. There is a relationship between breastfeeding adhequacy to postpartum mother who given oxytocin massage and which is not givenoxytocin massage in Working Area of Karangdowo Klaten Public Health Center with.

Abstract Background NextGenU.org and partners have offered (since 2012) free, accredited health sciences courses, with registrants in 192 (of 193) countries. We have now developed the world's first free, accredited degree: The Master of Public Health (MPH), including registration, teaching, testing, and co-granting of a degree. To this end, we continue collaborating with leading public health organizations and educational institutions. Objectives Our objective is to improve the health of the underserved, remove barriers to diversifying the health professional workforce, and promote understanding of global/population health. The MPH provides tested and validated interprofessional education in an ongoing timeframe. Institutions add to our MPH via qualified mentors to guide the competency-based mentored activities. Universities may use any/all parts and offer the courses/degrees to students for free or for the school's cost of mentoring. Knowledge acquisition continues to be computer-based via resources from academic, government, professional society, and peer-reviewed journal sources; local and remote peer and mentored activities are included. Results We have tested and published on this free model in North American public health, medical, and undergrad students, and in community health workers and primary care physicians in Kenya and India, showing as much knowledge gain and greater student satisfaction than with traditional courses. Peer-reviewed publications on NextGenU.org's efficacy are available at https://nextgenu.org/static/publications.html. All our trainings are reviewed/endorsed by our global academic, governmental and professional partners. Conclusions Our research shows the MPH creates local opportunities for health workers in their communities, reducing brain drain and exodus of health workers. We hope that conference attendees discovering these educational innovations translate our findings into action, distributing this resource to their institutions and countries. Key messages Our free MPH enables would-be and current health professionals and other learners globally to have equal access to first-class learning resources, without economic or geographic barriers. Because NextGenU.org is able to freely offer these first-class resources to all, our MPH can—and will—change the face of global health through creating worldwide communities of practice.

<p><strong>Abstrak</strong></p><p><strong>Latar Belakang : </strong>Prevalensi Hipertensi di Indonesia semakin meningkat mencapai 25,8% pada penduduk berusia 18 tahun keatas.  Amlodipin merupakan salah satu pilihan obat untuk terapi Hipertensi yang termasuk golongan Calsium Channel Blocker (CCB). Penggunaan obat antihipertensi sendiri merupakan salah satu faktor risiko yang menyebabkan sindroma mata kering.</p><p><strong>Tujuan : </strong>Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan obat antihipertensi terhadap sindroma mata kering pada penderita Hipertensi di wilayah kerja Puskesmas Jagir kota Surabaya.</p><p><strong>Metode penelitian : </strong>Penelitian ini adalah penelitian observasional analitik dengan metode cross-sectional. Subyek pada penelitian ini adalah 48 responden yang didapatkan dibagi kedalam 2 kelompok yakni, kelompok minum obat antihipertensi &gt;6 bulan dan tidak minum obat. Dilakukan pengisian kuesioner DEQ-5 dan pemeriksaan schirmer I.</p><p><strong>Hasil penelitian : </strong>Analisa deskriptif dari tes schirmer I frekuensi sindroma mata kering lebih tinggi pada responden yang mengkonsumsi obat antihipertensi dari pada responden yang tidak minum obat antihipertensi. Hasil analisa statistik menggunakan uji chi-square signifikansinya yaitu sebesar &lt;0,001 atau dapat dikatakan bahwa p&lt;α (0,05), menunjukkan ada pengaruh pemberian obat antihipertensi terhadap sindroma mata kering yang berdasarkan tes Schirmer pada pasien Hipertensi di wilayah kerja puskesmas Jagir  kota Surabaya.</p><p><strong>Simpulan : </strong>Penggunaan obat antihipertensi berpengaruh terhadap sindroma mata kering pada penderita hipertensi di wilayah kerja Puskesmas Jagir kota Surabaya</p><p><strong>Kata Kunci : </strong>Sindroma mata kering, obat antihipertensi, hipertensi</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p><strong>Background: </strong>Hypertension prevalence in Indonesia is increasing to reach 25.8% in the population aged 18 years and over. The use of antihypertensive medication itself is one of the risk factors that cause dry eye syndrome.</p><p><strong>Purpose</strong>: This study aims to determine the effect of the use of antihypertensive drugs on dry eye syndrome in patients with hypertension at Jagir Public Health Center in Surabaya working area.</p><p><strong>Methods:</strong> This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional method. The subjects in this study were 48 respondents found divided into 2 groups namely, the group taking antihypertensive drugs&gt; 6 months and not taking medication. The DEQ-5 questionnaire was completed and Schirmer I was examined.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> Descriptive analysis of the Schirmer I test for the frequency of dry eye syndrome was higher in respondents who took antihypertensive drugs than those who did not take antihypertensive drugs. The results of statistical analysis using the chi-square test of significance that is equal to &lt;0.001 or it can be said that p &lt;α (0.05), indicates there is an effect of antihypertensive drug administration on dry eye syndrome based on the Schirmer test in hypertension patients at Jagir Public Health Center in Surabaya..</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> The use of antihypertensive drugs has an effect on dry eye syndrome in patients with hypertension at the Jagir Public Health Center in Surabaya</p><strong>Keywords:</strong> Dry eye syndrome, antihypertensive drugs, hypertension

There are about 2.8 million incident of perineal rupture in maternal physiological labor. In 2050,it is estimated that the incidence of perineal rupture can be 6.3 million if it is not accompanied by a good midwifery care. In 2016, in Trawas, there was (89%) perineal rupture in primiparas and (57%) perineal rupture in multiparas. Perineal rupture incidences due to parity were still very high. This study aims to analyze the relationship between parity and the incidence of perineal rupture . It is quantitative studyusing a cross sectional approach, by using analysis of physiological maternity women  medical record data from January to April 2017 of 130 peoplein Trawas Public Health Center, Mojokerto Regency.The dataanalysis used was Chi - Square , indicated by p value = 0,000 with ɑ = 0,05. It means that the value of p <ɑ, so H1 is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a relationship between parity and the incidence of perineal rupture on physiological maternity women in Trawas Public Health Center,Mojokerto Regency. Midwives can apply collaboration with patients and their families to have physical and psychologicalpreparation with an alternative of hypnobirthing methods.

ABSTRAKStunting yaitu keadaan gagal tumbuh akibat dari kekurangan gizi kronis. Prevalensi stunting di Kabupaten Tasikmalaya menempati urutan keempat, dimana kecamatan Sukahening menempati urutan pertama tertinggi dengan jumlah 155 balita mengalami stunting. Faktor yang dapat mempengaruhi kejadian stunting yaitu pengasuhan anak yang kurang baik dimana tidak diberikannya ASI secara Ekslusif. Pencegahan stunting yaitu pada 1000 hari kehidupan dimana salah satunya pemberian ASI secara Ekslusif.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara pemberian ASI Ekslusif dengan kejadian stunting pada balita 1-5 tahun di Puskesmas Sukahening Kecamatan Sukahening Kabupaten Tasikmalaya.Jenis Penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif korelasional dengan pendekatan cross-sectional. Populasi total sampling sebanyak 95 responden menggunakan teknik purposive sampling.Hasil Penelitian diperoleh lebih dari setengah responden 51,6% tidak diberikan ASI secara Ekslusif, dan sebagian besar 65,3% balita mengalami stunting. Hasil perhitungan chi-square diperoleh ρ.value (0,000<0,05) maka H0 ditolak sehingga terdapat hubungan antara Pemberian ASI Ekslusif dengan kejadian stunting pada balita 1-5 tahun di Puskesmas Sukahening Kecamatan Sukahening Kabupaten Tasikmalaya.Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberi informasi yang bermanfaat dan perlu dilakukan pendidikan kesehatan ulang yang terjadwal terkait nutrisi yang terjangkau dan sehat sehingga dapat meningkatkan cakupan ASI Ekslusif dan dapat menurunkan angka stunting.Kata Kunci : ASI Ekslusif, StuntingDaftar Pustaka : 25 buku (2010-2018)9 jurnal (2013-2019)2 Website (2010-2017) ABSTRACTStunting is a condition of growth failure due to chronic malnutrition. The stunting prevalence in Tasikmalaya Regency was at the fourth place where Sukahening sub-district was at the highest with 155 stunting. Factor that can influence the occurrence of stunting is a poor parenting where exclusive breastfeeding is not given. The best prevention of stunting is on 1000 days of life where exclusive breastfeeding is given. The impact, if the baby is not given exclusive breastfeeding, they will lack of nutrition and also will have an impact on the growth or inappropriate height. This aims of the research is to determine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting on toddler under 5 years of at Sukahening Public Health Center, Sukahening Sub district, Tasikmalaya Regency. The type of research used is descriptive correlation with a cross-sectional approach. The total samplings were 95 respondents which used purposive sampling technique. The results of the research were obtained more than half of the respondents 51.6% were given exclusive breastfeeding, and most 65.3% of children under five had stunting. The chi-square calculation results obtained that ρ.value (0,000 <0,05) then H0 is rejected so that there is a relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting on toddlers under 5 years in Sukahening Public Health Center, Sukahening Sub district, Tasikmalaya Regency. Performed the health education related to affordable and healthy nutrition so that it can increase the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding and can reduce stunting rates.
