This study was conducted to improve the life-span of the biofilm produced from algae by evaluating the decomposition rate with the effect of cinnamon extraction oil (CEO). The biofilm was fabricated using the solution casting technique. The soil burying analysis demonstrated low moisture absorption of the biofilm, thus decelerating the degradation due to low swelling rate and micro-organism activity, prolonging the shelf-life of the biofilm. Hence, the addition of CEO also affects the strength properties of the biofilm. The maximum tensile strength was achieved with the addition of 5% CEO, which indicated a good intermolecular interaction between the biopolymer (algae) and cinnamon molecules. The tensile strength, which was measured at 4.80 MPa, correlated with the morphological structure. The latter was performed using SEM, where the surface showed the absence of a separating phase between the biofilm and cinnamon blend. This was evidenced by FTIR analysis, which confirmed the occurrence of no chemical reaction between the biofilm and CEO during processing. The prolongation shelf-life rate of biofilm with good tensile properties are achievable with the addition of 5% of CEO.

Changes in bacterial numbers, metmyoglobin percentage and 2-thiobarbituric acid number during the chill storage of pork longissimus dorsi packed with air, carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide and oxygen or vacuum-packed in plastic bags of high (polyethylene) and low (Cryovac BB-1) permeability to gases were studied. The fast increase of viable counts in polyethylene bags showed that plastic films of high permeability are not suitable to extend the shelf-life of meat using modified atmospheres. In Cryovac bags both carbon dioxide-enriched atmospheres and vacuum-packaging inhibited aerobic organisms, keeping the bacterial flora (mainly lactobacilli and Brochothrix thermosphacta) below the level of 108/cm2 for about 3 weeks. Metmyoglobin formation was not affected by 20% carbon dioxide, whilst 80% oxygen significantly decreased its rate. Metmyoglobin accumulation in vacuum-packed samples was even slower than in the oxygen-enriched atmosphere, but meat color was less attractive in the former than in the latter. Lipid oxidation was not the limiting factor of shelf-life in either of these two atmospheres. Off-odors appeared in both at approximately 20–22 d of storage.

In order to verify the effect of molecular sieve ethylene adsorbent and 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the shelf life of cherry tomato, two kinds of active packaging were comparatively investigated: molecular sieve sachet and 1-MCP pad with 25% Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene (SBS) modified LDPE packaging film. LDPE was used as control. The quality properties of samples were measured over 54 days at 25±1°C and 70±2% relative humidity. The ethylene concentration in the package atmosphere and other experimental parameters were measured periodically. The experimental results show that molecular sieve is more effective in decreasing ethylene concentration in the package than 1-MCP treatment. The best result was obtained by using SBS modified LDPE film with molecular sieve sachet which could extended the shelf life of cherry tomatoes.

Objective: This study was carried out to investigate physicochemical properties, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of low-fat sausages (LFSs) covered with sodium alginate (SA) film alone and with powder film (TSA-film) formed by cross-linking cherry tomato powder (CTP) and SA with calcium chloride (CaCl2).Methods: Sausages covered with the biodegradable film were assessed based on the measurement of pH, color (L*, a*, b*), proximate analysis, expressive moisture (EM), texture profile analysis, total plate counts (TPC), violet red bile, and 2-Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) during storage under refrigeration. LFSs wrapped with TSA-film were compared with those wrapped with SA-film and without film (control) during storage at 10°C for 35 days.Results: The LFSs covered with the mixed film had lower pH, lightness (L*), EM%, TBARS, and TPC, but lower yellowness (b*) and hardness values than those wrapped with TSA-film alone.Conclusion: Lipid oxidation and microbial growth was retarded in sausages covered with biodegradable films, especially multiple films as compared to single film, thereby resulting in extended shelf-life of the LFSs.

The present experiment was carried out at the Laboratories of the Department of Horticulture and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from February to April 2019 to study the effect of maturity indices and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the extension of shelf life and quality retention of cherry tomato. The two-factor experiment consisted of three maturity indices viz. (i) Maturity index 1 (M1: Mature green color), (ii) Maturity index 2 (M2: Yellow color), and (iii) Maturity index 3 (M3: Red color) and five postharvest treatments viz. (i) Control (T0), (ii) Low density perforated poly ethylene, LDPPE (T1), (iii) Low density poly ethylene, LDPE (T2), (iv) Low density perforated plastic box, LDPPB (T3), and (v) Low density plastic box, LDPB (T4). The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design with 3 replications. The maximum weight loss (7.77%) was recorded in mature green color fruits (M2) treated with control (T0), while the minimum (3.22) was found in yellow color fruits (M2) treated with LDPPB (T3). The maximum color change was observed from yellow color fruits (M2) with LDPPB (T3) and the minimum was observed from mature green color fruits (M1) treated with control (T0). The maximum TSS content (7.20%) was recorded from yellow color fruits (M2) treated with LDPB (T4), while the minimum (5.67%) was found in mature green color fruits (M1) treated with LDPPB (T3). The highest disease incidence and severity (16.67% and 21.67%, respectively) were recorded in red color fruits (M3) treated with control whereas the lowest disease incidence (1.67%) and severity (2.33%) were found in yellow color fruits (M2) treated with LDPPB. The longest shelf life (25.00 days) was obtained in yellow color fruits (M2) treated with LDPPB (T3) and the shortest shelf life (7.00 days) was observed in red color fruits (M3) treated with control (T0). Thus, yellow color fruits (M2) treated with LDPPB (T3) could be used for the extension of shelf life and quality retention of cherry tomato. Progressive Agriculture 32 (1): 43-59, 2021

An investigation was carried out at the Department of Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore during summer-2017 to study the effect ofvaried levels of nitrogen and phosphorus fertigation on cherry tomato under open field and polyhouse conditions. There were 12 treatment combinations comprising of two growing conditions (open field and polyhouse), three levels of nitrogen (120, 150 and 180 kg N ha-1) and two levels of phosphorus (100 and 120 kg P2O5 ha-1) supplied trough fertigation with recommended potassium (150 kg h-1) as constant which were laid out in Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Result revealed that plant height (384.39 cm), fresh weight per plant (3.00 kg),nitrogen balance index (48.56), total leaf area per plant (6293 cm2), mean fruit weight (15.84 g), TSS content (6.30 ºB) and shelf life (15.66 days) were significantly higher under polyhouse condition with fertigation level of 180:120 kg N:P2O5 ha-1. However, significantly higher yield per hectare (78.16 t), Shelf life (15.66 days) and higher cost benefit ratio (4.81) were observed under open field condition with fertigation level of 150:120 kg N: P2O5 ha-1. Further, it can be concluded from the study that application of 150:120 kg N: P2O5 ha-1 through fertigation under open field condition is profitable during summer season in the Eastern Dry Zone of Karnataka.
