In connection with the global trend, the dominant feature of the reforms in the education system moves towards the professional development of teachers. The article deals with competencies of a university teacher, which the teacher acquires and develops throughout his/her career. Competencies are necessary for qualified and professional performance. The significant part of the paper is devoted to the competency which exceeds all the others, the self-reflective competence. The authors of the article describe evaluation process at the Czech University of Life Sciences. Within this process opinions of students and teachers of the teaching process and implementation of the university teachers' key competencies are analysed. The aim of the enquiry was to find whether teachers prove competence as an excellent capability, eventually which of them are difficult to implement. From the results it is evident that the teachers evaluated themselves in all items above average. By highest rate they evaluated managing of the chosen parts of general educational competence, educational and psycho didactic competence, social, psychosocial and communicative competence. Based on the comparison with students, teachers have a tendency to overestimate themselves. That implies that it is necessary to lead some of the university teachers to understand the importance of self-reflection and to use efficient self-reflection methods.

The aim of the paper is to evaluate teachers´ competences and their self-reflection in the teaching process. The topicality of the research presented in the paper is given by the fact that teachers at university level must prove excellent competences regardless external factors which affect the teaching process any time. Competence is the key qualified and professional job performance in any sector. The paper focuses on the competences of university teachers which they acquire and develop throughout their career. Attention is given to professionally and personality cultivating competences, part of which is also self-reflection. Self-reflection refers to a person’s ability of introspection and willingness to learn more about own abilities and skills. This will lead to a better ability to identify changes that may be required. The methodology consists in a research based on a questionnaire survey and statistical evaluation of gathered information. The paper gives an outline of the evaluation process at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU), during which opinions of students and teachers about instruction were analysed, together with the fulfilment of selected university competences. The main body of the paper is dedicated to the statistical processing of selected data from the evaluation survey conducted by using the SPSS programme. The results indicate that there are significant deviations of teachers´ self-evaluation from the students´ opinion. The Institute of Education and Communication is going to offer courses in advanced competence development using techniques of self-reflection. This has a potential to enhance effectiveness of the teaching process at university level.

The aim of a professionally-oriented English language course is to develop students’ communicative compe-tence, English language linguistic competence, in particular, that supports students’ professional expertise. In this paper, the main issues of the formation of communicative competence in a professionally — oriented English language course at the university level are discussed. The data is drawn from the survey conducted among undergraduate and postgraduate students in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan (N=48, mean age 26.5) who have taken the course. The survey results revealed that although students hold a positive attitude towards the course, they did not show some sufficient improvement of linguistic skills after the course completion, and more than 33 % of respondents rarely or almost never used the acquired English language skills for their fur-ther professional development. In this paper, I argue that to reach the intended learning objectives of the course, there is a need for university teachers to create a more «authentic» environment in order to involve students in creative and engaging classroom activities.

Abstract The Professional Performance Review Process (PPRP) was designed specifically for the school-based speech-language pathologist and enhances the four major purposes of professional performance review that have been identified in educational literature. The PPRP combines a formative self-reflection tool (including workload analysis) with a summative evaluation process.

This study was developed in an action research perspective and aimed to create professional performance evaluation indicators for nursing technicians and auxiliaries working at the University Hospital of the University of Sao Paulo. Data were collected through the focus group technique, involving 19 secondary-level professionals, representing different Nursing Department units. During seven meetings, participants elaborated definitions of seven indicators they and their peers considered relevant to picture the adequate performance of these professional categories. In their reports, they manifested that the adopted strategy allowed them to express themselves about the meanings and feelings attributed to the performance evaluation process. In assessing the activity, the focus group members verbalized that, besides feeling more prepared to face problems related to performance evaluation, they also felt valued by their participation in the composition of the new instrument.

The Higher Education institutions should offer excellence teaching and qualification opportunities for the university teaching staff. La Facultad Integrada de Pernambuco (FACIPE) (the Integrated School of Pernambuco) in Brazil, following the global trend, has been involved in implementing changes to help improve the quality of education in our universities. The aim of this paper is to show how the teachers themselves, the core of this change, perceive their continuing training and how it can help in their upgrade process as a university lecturer. Thus, we use the teaching staff self-assessment as a tool to develop a FACIPE teaching staff profile and a strategy to foster self-reflection to discover and identify the "real" needs for the Comisin Propia de Evaluacin (CPA) (The Own Commission of Assessment) to be able to arrange Continuing Education seminars, courses and / or workshops.

The conditions are investigated in which Spanish university teachers carry out their teaching and research functions. 655 teachers from the University of Oviedo took part in this study by completing the Academic Setting Evaluation Questionnaire (ASEQ). Of the three dimensions assessed in the ASEQ, Satisfaction received the lowest ratings, Social Climate was rated higher, and Relations with students was rated the highest. These results are similar to those found in two studies carried out in the academic years 1986/87 and 1989/90. Their relevance for higher education is twofold because these data can be used as a complement of those obtained by means of students' opinions, and the crossing of both types of data can facilitate decision making in order to improve the quality of the work (teaching and research) of the university institutions.

This paper is devoted to presenting the methods in English communicating skills for Learners of English in general and the problems specific to University of Bahri. English language major’s graduates then; it discusses the notion of communicative competence, and defines strategic competence. It also briefly deals with the various definitions of communication strategies and taxonomies of conversation strategies. Also, I give brief definition of the word conversation, that is the act of talking together or exchange ideas, opinions, skills, and information. As accustomed, speaking is natural and automatic but communication is an art which must be learned and practiced. Also the aim of this paper is to present you with suitable suggestions about how you can solve problems while reading English? In order to comply with this objective: we considered two variables. The first one is that within our daily practice at the university we have students with different abilities while reading English. Therefore, we need to help them increase the ability in reading comprehension. However, we don’t have enough teachers and needed resources to supply them with the help they need. The second variable is related to the fact that at University there are different centers where the students’ skills can improve and their reading comprehension skills deficiencies could be overcome by getting help from the teachers. This study is small component of a larger curriculum review exercise. The findings of study in general suggest that both students and English language lecturers were in agreement that Sudanese students had a problem in writing and speaking English and due to that the conversational problems are raised.      Finally, the paper concludes by representing the pedagogical implications of conversation strategies.
