This chapter examines the salt merchants’ role in constructing chastity arches—stone structures honoring women who maintained chaste widowhood—in She county in Huizhou. In the High Qing era, the Manchu court systematically patronized the construction of monumental objects, such as stone arches, with the dual object of inculcating Confucian morality in their illiterate subjects and displaying their imperial legitimacy. The Huizhou salt merchants, seeing an opportunity to expand their influence, devoted themselves to chastity arch construction in the local community of Huizhou, thus publicizing the virtuous deeds that the court rewarded. While these merchants used their economic prowess to participate in the state’s cultivation project, their financial support of these arches was itself a product of the court’s salt monopoly policies. At the same time, these monuments gave these wealthy businessmen the opportunity to bolster their reputations, display their wealth, and lay claim to legitimate dominance in local society.

Influence of volunteer fire departments on  the  culture level of ecological safetyEcological safety is one of the fundamental types of safety. It is a  kind of safety in which every matter including man comes into direct contact at every moment of existence because it relates to the ecosystem. People are both creators and recipients of this safety. The subject matter therefore is about how we threaten the environment and about the ways in which the environment generates these threats. This is the reason why the principles of sustainable development are so pertinent in every human endevour. Unfortunately, man — the creator has been having an increasingly destructive influence causing a  mechanical feedback of threats that endanger man — the recipient. Under these premises, the cultural education of ecological safety is a  task of paramount importance. In the process of creating such a  culture local communities have an unquestionable importance and volunteer fire departments constitute an integral aspect in such communities. It should be noted that both legal and sociological conditions give VFD a  unique role which refers to the enormous potential of impact on the culture of ecological security. This applies in particular to the development of sensitivity, awareness and educational activities. It is worth emphasizing the fact that activities directed inwardly to a  given VFD automatically affect local society, as members of a  given VFD belong to the local community. External actions addressed to non members but to other people gain importance and effectiveness when cooperating with other entities of a  given local society. So the potential of Volunteer Fire Departments and their impact on the culture of ecological safety is undeniable. At the same time, however, it is “only” a  potential that needs to be transformed into concrete actions. What we are facing is an oppurtunity dependant on the readiness of man being the creator and recipient.

The article examines the theoretical approaches to understanding the location and functioning of man in the local community asa member. It is proved that the urgency of this issue is determined by the fact that for the first time, at the constitutional level, the Ukrainianstate has recognized the existence of a system of local interests, produced by the territorial community – territorial community, concerningthe existential issues of its existence and functioning. territorial units of the state, which were legalized as issues of local importance. Thus, such interests of the community, according to the current constitutional guidelines, are solved, first, through the use of aspecific historical and universal social and legal institution – local self-government, which really gives the community and its membersopportunities for self-organization in such a community, self-identification and self-expression. within such a community, as well asinitiatives to implement the latter, again within such a community. In addition, it is argued that local self-government is exercised eitherdirectly by such a community (through the use of appropriate mechanisms of direct democracy) or by local governments formed by thecommunity itself in the process of democratic elections and appointments and acting on the principles of representative democracy. Atthe same time, territorial communities act as the primary subjects of local self-government, and therefore local self-government bodiesmust act on behalf of and in the interests of the respective communities. It is argued that the phenomenology of self-presentation of man (personality) in the territorial community has a solid integralphilosophicalbasis, a significant doctrinal-normative basis, reflects axiological guidelines of local government and parametric-teleologicalvalues of formation, functioning, development and development and high motivation of a man (personality) – a member of thecommunity, because it demonstrates its ability to build harmonious relationships with other members of local society in local governmentand its bodies by either leveling their individual guidelines in favor of local society, or by adjusting, synergizing, adaptation tocollective needs. In addition, it demonstrates that the self-presentation of a man (personality) actively forms and demonstrates its selfworth, ability to self-identification, self-organization, self-activity, self-government, as well as the ability to build a balance of intereststhrough human size and application of individual and collective interests (intersubjectivity).

The aim of this paper is to identify and describe the difficulties faced by families with nonmarital children (especially single-parent), available help and support, participation of the father in raising a child, and expected institutional help. That represents a first step toward better understanding of these families. The paper presents part of the results of research carried out in Belgrade with the aim of insight into the phenomenon of nonmarital childbearing at the individual level. It was conducted on a sample of 100 respondents, mothers of nonmarital children, who attend preschool. The survey was anonymous, carried out by the interview method. For this purpose a questionnaire with more than 50 questions was made, standardized to a great extent. In this paper, the focus is on the hardships and needs of the group of lone mothers. Though some issues take into account the answers of all respondents (21 cohabited mothers and 79 lone mothers), the analysis is largely related to the experiences and reflections of lone mothers. The 2011 Census data on prevalence of consensual unions and characteristics of persons living in them, as well as earlier data on the acknowledgment of paternity, do not indicate that nonmarital childbearing in Serbia takes place primarily in stable unions. It is realistic to assume that a large percentage of mothers with nonmarital children are lone mothers. The research results are generally consistent with the findings of relevant studies from our and foreign countries. As the largest difficulties, lone mothers emphasize financial problems, unemployment, housing difficulties, and child care, as well as a pronounced feeling of loneliness. Most of them in solving problems and rising children rely on their parents and siblings, with whom they often live in the same household. Every fifth lone mother when faced with a major problem, and every ninth in everyday raising a child can count on the father of the child. About a third of the children have no contact with their father, and as many fathers do not make any financial contribution. Actually, insufficient presence and participation of the father, in the lives of children and in daily performing parental responsibilities of their mothers, is one of the most important aspects that deserve the attention of researchers and policy-makers when it comes to lone mothers with unmarital children. The realization of children's rights in relation to financing and visitation the fathers after parental separation, is far more difficult than in divorced or widowed single-parent families. Some considerations about measures of state and local community support can be based on the selected research results presented in this paper. Support measures are possible in multiple domains, social policy (financial support and assistance in employment), institutions of preschool education, as well as in health, education, pre-school and social system counseling services. Greater involvement of men in family life and parenthood stands out as a very important objective, as well as motivation of fathers to involve in raising their nonresident children, including financial support. Three-quarters of the total number of respondents expect the state support to lone unmarried mothers. Three-quarters of lone mothers and one third of cohabited mothers expressed the need for state assistance in solving their own most important existential issues.

This paper explores the relationship between local lineage social structure and the workings of tax registration in Qing China, through a case study providing documentary evidence of a level of precision that enables us to go beyond the findings of previous scholarship. In the first instance, it reconstructs a tax dispute where implications of the registration system come into play, based on rare records made by the taxpayers themselves. In doing so, it shows that (a) the registered “acreage” of land was in fact unrelated to any actual land whatsoever; (b) tax collection ceased to be able to rely on knowledge of the terrain and had to depend on knowing the social groups that could be held responsible for payment, while the cohesion and internal differentiation of these social groups was (in turn) underpinned by tax collection and registration; and (c) since the registration system did not permit the government to keep track of actual landholding, property rights had to be secured at the local community level. In conclusion, an attempt is made to speculate on the extent to which this specific case contributes to our knowledge of local social structure, the interactions between localities and the government, and the property regime of Qing China overall.

The present study described analyses of two similar informal recreational green areas (former constructional waste disposal landfills) in two large cities (Warsaw city and Łódź city). On the basis of local society’s opinions, the land use conditions related to current accessibility, management, safety, cleanliness, variety and diversity of facility and vegetation, neighbourhood and connections with the urban green infrastructure of the given sites were studied. Overall feedback posted by the site users indicated that, despite temporary land use, both sites are good leisure areas that provide cultural ecosystem services to the citizens. However, their undefined development makes them to varying degrees neglected and risky spaces, especially for the local community. The reflection of the results of the present study may help the local authorities to manage the spaces of former landfills in accordance with the needs of the local society as well as define new functions of informal urban green space in the sustainable spatial policy in post-socialist cities in Poland and Eastern Europe.
