An advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling design method using a numerical viscous/inviscid coupling procedure has been developed. The method is employed to analytically evaluate the performance of various combinations of high pressure vaneaxial fan rotor, stator and diffuser geometries. The procedures used in the CFD design method ensure a free-vortex blading, a separation-free profile, and a configuration with optimum rotor-stator interaction. Two test fans which have aerodynamic performance and geometrical characteristics close to the desired fan operating range are used to provide code verification and empirical information for the total design effort. A design example is presented. Aerodynamic and aeroacoustic test data will be presented in a later paper.

Abstract The results of previous studies have proved that manufacture variations can cause a noticeable influence on compressor aerodynamic performance. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the influence rules and mechanisms of manufacture variations on supersonic/transonic blades aerodynamic performance. The variations used in this study were measured from some newly manufactured high-pressure compressors. In the present study, several blade sections with different design Mach number conditions are selected for further statistical analysis of measured deviation data. Therefore, some systematic errors in the deviation data have been revealed. Based on these data, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method has been used to obtain the aerodynamic performances of a large number of the measured blade elements. And then, the analysis of the influence rules of manufacture variations on blade aerodynamic performance in different Mach number conditions has been carried out. The present results indicate that the effects of manufacture variations on blade aerodynamic performance in the lower Mach number (0.8) condition are much more significant comparing to that in the higher Mach number (0.9∼1.2) conditions. Based on this, influence mechanisms of manufacture variations on positive incidence range and negative incidence range have been analyzed. The differences of influence mechanisms in different Mach number conditions are the focus of research.

AbstractCell-implant adhesive strength is important for prostheses. In this paper, an investigation is described into the adhesion of bovine chondrocytes to Ti6Al4V-based substrates with different surface roughnesses and compositions. Cells were cultured for 2 or 5 days, to promote adhesion. The ease of cell removal was characterised, using both biochemical (trypsin) and mechanical (accelerated buoyancy and liquid flow) methods. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling has been used to estimate the shear forces applied to the cells by the liquid flow. A comparison is presented between the ease of cell detachment indicated using these methods, for the three surfaces investigated.

It is well known that vessels operating in the vicinity of a lateral bank experience a significant yaw moment and sway force. This bank effect has a major impact on the manoeuvring properties of the vessel and must therefore be properly understood to ensure the safe passage of the vessel through the restricted waterway. Accordingly, this study performs a series of simulations using commercial FLOW-3D® computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and the KRISO 3600 TEU container ship model to examine the effects of the vessel speed and distance to bank on the magnitude and time-based variation of the yaw angle and sway force. The results show that for a given vessel speed, the yaw angle and sway force increase as the distance to bank reduces, while for a given distance between the ship and the bank, the yaw angle and sway force increase with an increasing vessel speed. In addition, it is shown that even when a vessel advances at a very low speed, it experiences a significant bank effect when operating in close vicinity to the bank. Overall, the results presented in this study confirm the feasibility of the CFD modelling approach as a means of obtaining detailed insights into the bank effect without the need for time-consuming and expensive ship trials.

The fluid residence time characterization of a 3.4 m diameter hydrodynamic vortex separator (HDVS) has been carried out under laboratory conditions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling has then been undertaken for the same conditions at which the experimental data were collected and validated against the experimental results, for which reasonable correspondence has been found. Using the results from the CFD modelling and batch inactivation results from the disinfection of secondary treated wastewater, it is shown that the theoretical performance of an HDVS as a contact vessel for disinfection can be determined and the practical applicability of an HDVS for disinfection is confirmed.

The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is now increasingly being used for modeling industrial flows, i.e. flows which are multiphase and turbulent. Numerical modeling of flows where momentum, heat and mass transfer occurs at the interface presents various difficulties due to the wide range of mechanisms and flow scenarios present. This paper attempts to provide a summary of available mathematical models and techniques for two-phase flows. Some comments are also made on the models available in the commercially available codes.

This paper presents the investigation of aerodynamic performance of inboard Store-X and Store-Y configurations on the X-plane aircraft model through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The X-plane and Store-Y represent the default store and pylon integration while Store-X provides a possibility for other types of store to be integrated. These stores are loosely based upon the two most commonly used by the western and eastern blocks. The resultant lift, drag and moment forces are of interest in order to observe their impact with respect to the two different stores configurations. The finding shows that the aerodynamic impact with respect to Store-X installation on the inboard pylon station is insignificant when compared to default system, hence offers the safety of delivering the Store-X from the X-plane aircraft.

For a gas-liquid separator sizing, many engineers have neglected the flow pattern of incoming fluids. The impact of inlet slug flow which impeded onto the separator’s liquid phase will cause a separator fails to perform when sloshing happened in the separator. To date, the study on verifying the impact of inlet slug flow in a separator remains limited. In this paper, the impact of inlet momentum and inlet slug flow on the hydrodynamics in a separator for cases without an inlet device were investigated. The experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results of cavity formation and sloshing occurrence in the separator in this study were compared. A User Defined Function (UDF) was used to describe the inlet slug flow at the separator inlet. Inlet slug flow occurred at inlet momentum from 200 to 1000 Pa, and sloshing occurred in the separator at 1000 Pa. Both experimental and simulated results showed similar phenomena.
