Traditional medicine therapies are historically used worldwide for disease prevention and treatment purposes. Apitherapy is part of the traditional medicine based on bee product use. Complementary medicine practices which incorporate use of some traditional herbal, mineral, or animal kind substances very often are discussed with pharmacy professionals because these products are often sold in pharmacies as dietary supplements. This study is aimed at determining the attitude, knowledge, and practices of apitherapy among undergraduated pharmacy students (Master of Pharmacy) who already have a pharmacy technician diploma and from 1 to 20 years of practice working in a community pharmacy as pharmacy assistants. A method of questionnaire was chosen. The questions about attitudes, experience, knowledge, and practices for disease prevention and treatment of different bee products, their safety, and informational sources were included. Respondents shared opinion that use of bee product is part of the traditional medicine. Most of them had experience on honey product use for treatment and disease prevention for themselves and their family members (62%) although the need of more evidence based information was expressed. The most known bee products were honey, propolis, and royal jelly. They are widely used for enhancing the immune system and prevention of respiratory tract infection.

Xylitol has been widely documented to have dental health benefits, such as reducing the risk for dental caries. Here we report on other health benefits that have been investigated for xylitol. In skin, xylitol has been reported to improve barrier function and suppress the growth of potential skin pathogens. As a non-digestible carbohydrate, xylitol enters the colon where it is fermented by members of the colonic microbiota; species of the genus Anaerostipes have been reported to ferment xylitol and produce butyrate. The most common Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species do not appear to be able to grow on xylitol. The non-digestible but fermentable nature of xylitol also contributes to a constipation relieving effect and improved bone mineral density. Xylitol also modulates the immune system, which, together with its antimicrobial activity contribute to a reduced respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, and otitis media risk. As a low caloric sweetener, xylitol may contribute to weight management. It has been suggested that xylitol also increases satiety, but these results are not convincing yet. The benefit of xylitol on metabolic health, in addition to the benefit of the mere replacement of sucrose, remains to be determined in humans. Additional health benefits of xylitol have thus been reported and indicate further opportunities but need to be confirmed in human studies.

Objective To evaluate how evidence-based our daily practice was. Design Retrospective study. Setting Emergency department of a public district hospital. Patients and Methods Between 1st August 2000 to 7th August 2000, 91 patients' records were chosen at random. A chief diagnosis was assigned for each patient. Corresponding treatments were reviewed by searching relevant randomised controlled trials (RCTs), systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Each patient had only one chief diagnosis but could have multiple interventions for that diagnosis. Results Out of 91 records, 14 were discarded. All of them had not been given any intervention and 11 required admission. For the remaining 77 records, there were 38 subjects in medical, paediatric, or gynaecological specialties and 39 in surgical or orthopaedic specialties. Intervention(s) given for each subject were then searched electronically through our hospital Knowledge Gateway and the results were expressed as either EBM-positive or EBM-negative. “EBM-positive” interventions denoted a support by RCTs. “EBM-negative” interventions denoted an absence of any supportive RCTs. Each patient might have EBM-positive and/or EBM-negative interventions together if that patient received more than one treatment. There were 52 patients (52/77 = 68%) who had one of their interventions being RCT-supported. The majority were patients with (1) antipyretic use of paracetamol in upper respiratory tract infection, or (2) control of pain by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, dologesic and paracetamol. There were 25 patients (25/77 = 32%) who did not receive any RCT-supported interventions. Concurrently 53 patients out of 77 (69%) received EBM-negative interventions. The majority were patients with (1) the use of antibiotics, antitussives and antihistamines in upper respiratory tract infection, (2) antispasmodics in gastroenteritis or patients with nonspecific abdominal pain, and (3) the use of analgesic balm in minor orthopaedic complaints. Conclusion Sixty-eight percent of patients had EBM-positive interventions. Thirty-two percent of patients did not receive any EBM-positive intervention. It was quite encouraging as compared to studies in other specialties with similar design. Concurrently 69% of patients had also been given EBM-negative interventions. There were areas for improvement if we were to implement EBM practice in the emergency department.

AbstractThe human ageing process is universal, ubiquitous and inevitable. Every physiological function is being continuously diminished. There is a range between two distinct phenotypes of ageing, shaped by patterns of living - experiences and behaviours, and in particular by the presence or absence of physical activity (PA) and structured exercise (i.e., a sedentary lifestyle). Ageing and a sedentary lifestyle are associated with declines in muscle function and cardiorespiratory fitness, resulting in an impaired capacity to perform daily activities and maintain independent functioning. However, in the presence of adequate exercise/PA these changes in muscular and aerobic capacity with age are substantially attenuated. Additionally, both structured exercise and overall PA play important roles as preventive strategies for many chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, and obesity; improvement of mobility, mental health, and quality of life; and reduction in mortality, among other benefits. Notably, exercise intervention programmes improve the hallmarks of frailty (low body mass, strength, mobility, PA level, energy) and cognition, thus optimising functional capacity during ageing. In these pathological conditions exercise is used as a therapeutic agent and follows the precepts of identifying the cause of a disease and then using an agent in an evidence-based dose to eliminate or moderate the disease. Prescription of PA/structured exercise should therefore be based on the intended outcome (e.g., primary prevention, improvement in fitness or functional status or disease treatment), and individualised, adjusted and controlled like any other medical treatment. In addition, in line with other therapeutic agents, exercise shows a dose-response effect and can be individualised using different modalities, volumes and/or intensities as appropriate to the health state or medical condition. Importantly, exercise therapy is often directed at several physiological systems simultaneously, rather than targeted to a single outcome as is generally the case with pharmacological approaches to disease management. There are diseases for which exercise is an alternative to pharmacological treatment (such as depression), thus contributing to the goal of deprescribing of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMS). There are other conditions where no effective drug therapy is currently available (such as sarcopenia or dementia), where it may serve a primary role in prevention and treatment. Therefore, this consensus statement provides an evidence-based rationale for using exercise and PA for health promotion and disease prevention and treatment in older adults. Exercise prescription is discussed in terms of the specific modalities and doses that have been studied in randomised controlled trials for their effectiveness in attenuating physiological changes of ageing, disease prevention, and/or improvement of older adults with chronic disease and disability. Recommendations are proposed to bridge gaps in the current literature and to optimise the use of exercise/PA both as a preventative medicine and as a therapeutic agent.

Background: Immunostimulants are gradually being used in the prevention and treatment of recurrent respiratory tract infection (RRTIs) in susceptible children, but its drug effects have not been quantified. The purpose of this paper is to confirm the efficacy of immunostimulants in the prevention and treatment of RRTIs in susceptible children. Methods: Model-based meta-analysis (MBMA) was used to describe the time-course of placebo and immunostimulants in the prevention of RRTIs in children. The cumulative number of acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) was used as the indicator of efficacy. The single-arm meta-analysis was used to analyze the incidence of drug related adverse events. Results: A total of 14 articles with 2,400 pediatric subjects were finally included for analysis. The results showed that the cumulative number of ARTIs increased linearly with time, and the incidence of ARTIS in the placebo group was 0.65 (95% CI: 0.55 to 0.75) per month. OM-85 BV and pidotimod significantly reduced the incidence of ARTIs by 0.21 (95% CI: 0.16 to 0.26) and 0.19 (95% CI: 0.17 to 0.21) compared with placebo per month, respectively. The incidence of drug-related adverse events of pidotimod and OM-85 BV was comparable with that of placebo. Conclusions: Pidotimod and OM-85 BV can effectively reduce the incidence of ARTIs in susceptible children, and there is no significant increase in the incidence of drug-related adverse events. This study provides quantitative support for the application of immunostimulants for the prevention of recurrent respiratory tract infection in children.

Traditional medicine is an ingredient or a recipe for components in the form of plant ingredients, animal ingredients, mineral substances, galenic preparations, or mixtures of these ingredients that have been used for treatment from generation to generation and can be applied by the prevailing norms in society. Traditional medicinal herbs can be an option for health maintenance, disease prevention, and health care and strengthening a person's immune system. With low prices and easy-to-find raw materials, traditional medicinal ingredients can be made and consumed at home. This review aims to provide information that native Indonesian herbs act as traditional medicines and also have potential as immunomodulators. The way to get this information is by searching through Google Scholar. The results show that many native Indonesian herbs act as natural immunomodulators. Therefore, it can be concluded that native Indonesian herbs can be developed into phytopharmaca as immunomodulators.

It has long been claimed that non-wetsuit cold water swimming (CWS) benefits health (1), and anecdotally cold-water swimmers claimed to suffer fewer and milder infections, though this was not directly measured. A boost to immunity is biologically plausible: stress hormones are released during cold-water immersion (2), and short-term stress may ready the immune system for injury or infection (3). However, very few studies have investigated immune system markers and/or actual illness in habitual cold-water swimmers.

: In the 21st century, humans are in battle against a deadly contagious disease COVID 19, first reported in Wuhan, China. Coronavirus Disease designated as COVID 19 is caused by SARS COV 2 virus from beta coronavirus family. Although, there are no specific anti-viral drugs and vaccines against this pandemic disease, however many medicines are being repurposed for COVID 19 management but have shown a limited success. Traditional medicine systems from ancient times were used for their immense efficacy with minimal adverse effects compared to allopathic medicines. Thus, for COVID 19 management, researchers are focused on traditional medicines from Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy as adjuvant therapy as per anecdotal data regarding their usage in the treatment of Infectious disease. In India, all the traditional medicine systems are under AYUSH ministry and government has been highlighting AYSUH medicines for improving immune system against COVID 19. In this review, the authors emphasize on historical background of AYUSH medicines in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and the medicines recommended by AYUSH ministry for combating against COVID 19 as immunity boosters.

AbstractWe examined the cumulative prevalences of 22 symptoms thought to reflect immune system function reported in a questionnaire mailed to 7616 Australian twins. The associations between symptoms and demographic variables were expressed in terms of polychoric or polyserial correlations, and a principal components analysis performed. Factors representing underlying propensities respectively to allergic disease, various minor infections, diseases associated with aging such as arthritis, skin disease, and respiratory tract infection were extracted. Possible processes underlying these symptom clusters and the relative strengths and weaknesses of this type of analysis are discussed.
