Fungi can cause various diseases, and some pathogenic fungi have been detected in the water of dental equipment. This environment offers suitable conditions for fungal biofilms to emerge, which can facilitate mycological contamination. This study verified whether the water employed in the dental units of two dental clinics at the University of Franca was contaminated with fungi. This study also evaluated the ability of the detected fungi to form biofilms. The high-revving engine contained the largest average amount of fungi, 14.93 ± 18.18 CFU/mL. The main fungal species verified in this equipment belonged to the generaAspergillusspp.,Fusariumspp.,Candidaspp., andRhodotorulaspp. Among the isolated filamentous fungi, only one fungus of the genusFusariumspp. did not form biofilms. As for yeasts, all theCandidaspp. isolates grew as biofilm, but none of theRhodotorulaspp. isolates demonstrated this ability. Given that professionals and patients are often exposed to water and aerosols generated by the dental procedure, the several fungal species detected herein represent a potential risk especially to immunocompromised patients undergoing dental treatment. Therefore, frequent microbiological monitoring of the water employed in dental equipment is crucial to reduce the presence of contaminants.

The knowledge and attitudes of 460 dental patients attending outpatient dental clinics in Alexandria, Tanta, and El-Mansoura universities were studied. Every patient was interviewed individually using a questionnaire concerning the routine use of protective gloves, masks and spectacles. The results revealed that 90% of the patients expected dentists to wear gloves, 73% expected them to wear face masks and 37% to wear spectacles. Most patients believed that gloves were for the patient’s protection while face masks and spectacles were for the dentist’s protection. About 50% of patients believed that they could contract infectious diseases during dental treatment;the more educated, the greater the concern of infection. Tanta patients were more concerned about cross infection than other patients

Abstract Objectives Information was collected to identify anxiety in dental patients visiting a dental clinic using the Dental Anxiety Scale, their level of psychological distress using the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 and identifying a correlation between these groups as well as the gender and age. Data description This data contains a set of 1550 patients’ answers to questionnaires taken before dental treatment in a dental clinic. It is divided into male and female patients as well as according to their age. The level of Dental Anxiety can be interpreted by answers chosen in the Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) and the level of psychological distress by answers chosen in the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18). This dataset should help to encourage more research in the field of dental anxiety and we hope to see more comparisons with our data in the future or in different regions of the world.

Three hundred fifteen patients who searched dental treatment at UFRGS dental clinics in 1973 and who did not return in 1974 were interviewed and the main reasons given were recorded. Relevant factors were analysed, such as: personal data, socio-economic status, factors that have influenced the utilization of clinical services at the University, and attitudes regarding the treatment received and future treatment at the University. Various associations of these factors and their combinations were also analyzed. The main reasons given by the patients for not returning were: they didn't have time, they needed no treatment and they went to another dentist.

Background: Pharmacotherapy plays important role in the management of paediatric dental patients in the department of paediatric dentistry. Many children at their early age suffer from different kinds of dental conditions such as acute and chronic irreversible pulpitis, acute and chronic alveolar abscesses, dentoalveolar and vestibular abscesses, etc along with physiological tooth movement that requires professional help for dental treatment. Treatment of such conditions most frequently requires pharmacotherapy as an either adjunct to dental therapeutic procedure or as a monotherapy. Objective: To assess the prescribing patterns vis-a-vis generic or trade name, generic class, dosage form, route, frequency, duration, number of drugs per patient, cost and indication of drug therapy, patterns of dental treatment and Frankl's behavioral rating. Materials and methods: Prescriptions of 200 paediatric dental patients undergoing dental treatment in the department of paediatric dentistry were analyzed prospectively for a period of six months in a dental teaching hospital. Results: 133 (56.5%) patients were males and 87 (43.5%) females and age group 6-10 years was the most frequent group (70%, P=0.0000000) and all the patients received pharmacotherapy. Total numbers of 357 drugs were prescribed. Out of them, 212 (59.4%, P=0.0000008) were analgesic agents, 133 (37.3%) antimicrobial agents (AMAs) and 12 (3.3%) other drugs. Extended spectrum Penicillins were the most commonly prescribed (90.2%) AMA followed by Metronidazole (9.8%). 247 drugs (69.2%, P=0.0000000) were prescribed by trade names. 60% (P=0.0000002) drugs were prescribed in the form of tablet or capsule followed by syrup 37% and administered entirely through oral route. Percentage of patients receiving three drugs, two drugs and one drug was 13.5%, 56.5% (P=0.0000000) and 30% respectively and one patient received on average 1.78 medicines. 133 patients (56.5%, P=0.0000000) received both AMA and analgesic agent. Minimum to maximum number of days for pharmacotherapy were 2 to 15 and highest frequency was up to four times a day. Cost of medicines was in the range of 10-150 Nepalese Rupees. Chronic irreversible pulpitis was the commonest diagnosis (28%) and extraction (92.5%) was the commonest dental procedure. Frankl's behaviour rating showed that 78.5% (P=0.0000000) patients had positive attitude towards the dental procedures. Conclusion: Findings of the study suggest that pharmacotherapy is the mainstay in therapy to treat the paediatric dental patients along with dental procedures either to control the dental pain or odontogenic infection. Age group 6-10 years, chronic irreversible pulpitis and dental extraction are the commonest age group, diagnosis and dental procedure respectively in the department of paediatric dentistry. Analgesic (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs- Nimesulide, Ibuprofen and Paracetamol) and Amoxicillin are the most frequently prescribed drugs mostly in the solid dosage forms in trade names via oral route. Duration of pharmacotherapy ranges from 2 to 15 days with highest frequency being up to 4 times a day. Majority of the patients are manageable without any behavioural modification technique- physical or pharmacological. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the records of pediatric dental patients treated under general anesthesia to determine if there had been any significant change in preoperative diagnoses between 1990-99 and 2000-08. Study Design: The records of 3298 pediatric dental patients treated in the operating room under general anesthesia at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Children's Hospital were examined and medical diagnoses recorded. The number of cases treated by calendar year was obtained. Results:The results of this study did not find any significant differences in percentage frequency of medical diagnoses between the years of 1990-99 and 2000-08. There has been a steady increase in the number of cases treated under general anesthesia over the period of the study. Conclusions: 1. Dental care under general anesthesia remains an important treatment option. 2. The medical diagnoses of children provided dental treatment under general anesthesia has not changed significantly over the past nineteen years at the UNC Children's Hospital. 3. The demand to provide dental care for children under general anesthesia has continued to increase.

Aim: This descriptive type of cross-sectional study was conducted among 105 dental surgeons working in the outpatient departments at some renowned educational institutions and a few private dental clinics in Dhaka city. Methods: The respondents were interviewed using structured questionnaire and their method of practice was noted. Results: Mean period of practice was 9.49±5.936 (1 to 27) years. The mean age in year of the respondents was 33.88±6.18 (24 to 50) years. Highest respondents were from private dental clinics (28.6%) and the rests were from educational institutions. According to educational qualifications, 65.7% were graduate dental surgeons and the rest were postgraduates. Male were more (63) in numbers than the female respondents (42). Only 9.5% practiced dental chair instrument tray and other exposed area cleaning with disinfectants between patients, 6.7% used to wrap exposed areas and change between different patients and 5.7% practiced air exhausting during dental treatment. Only 27.6% changed gloves for each patient, 71.4% dental surgeons used aprons, 96.1% dental surgeons used face masks, 74.3% respondents did not use goggles or eye protecting shields and only 4.8% dental surgeons used head caps in their daily dental practice. Of all, 5.7% dental surgeons routinely advised their patients to rinse mouth with any antiseptic mouth wash before treatment to minimize dental splatter and aerosol and 3.8% dental surgeons used high-volume suction as a routine practice during all dental treatment procedures. Conclusion: The study reveals the existing practice situation of dental surgeons of Dhaka city about cross infection control especially dental splatter and aerosol. Dental health-care personnel, dental patients and their family members are at a risk to expose to contaminated diseases due to dental splatter and aerosol. Tomato plants, cv. Rumba Ożarowska, grown in the greenhouse of the University of Warmia and Mazury, were protected in the form of alternate spraying (twice) and watering (twice) with 5% aqueous extracts of the following plant species: <i>Aloe vulgaris</i> Lam., <i>Achillea millefolium</i> L., <i>Mentha piperita</i> L., <i>Polygonum aviculare</i> L., <i>Equisetum arvense</i> L., <i>Juglans regia</i> L. and <i>Urtica dioica</i> L. Plants not treated with the extracts served as control. After fruit harvest, samples of roots and soil were collected. The roots were disinfected and next placed on PDA medium. Soil-colonizing fungi were cultured on Martin medium. Fungi were identified microscopically after incubation. Pathogenic fungal species, <i>Colletotrichum coccodes</i>, <i>Fusarium equiseti</i>, <i>F. oxysporum</i> and <i>F. poae</i>, accounted for over 60% of all isolates obtained from the roots of tomato plants. The soil fungal community was dominated by yeast-like fungi (75.4%), whereas pathogenic fungi were present in low numbers. The applied 5% aqueous plant extracts effectively reduced the abundance of fungi, including pathogenic species, colonizing tomato plants and soil. The extract from <i>P. aviculare</i> showed the highest efficacy, while the extract from <i>J. regia</i> was least effective. Fungi showing antagonistic activity against pathogens (<i>Paecilomyces roseum</i> and species of the genus <i>Trichoderma</i>) were isolated in greatest abundance from the soil and the roots of tomato plants treated with <i>A. millefolium</i>, <i>M. piperita</i> and <i>U. dioica</i> extracts.

Relevance. The narrowing of the maxilla is one of the most common pathologies in orthodontics. Recent studies show that the narrowing is always asymmetric which is connected to the rotation of the maxilla. To choose the treatment correctly one need a calculation that reveals the asymmetry, which is impossible with using standard indexes.Purpose – to compare efficiency of indexes of Pont and Korkhause with the Kernott's method in patients with narrowing of the maxilla.Materials and methods. The study involved 35 children aged from 8 to 12 years old undergoing dental treatment in the University Children's Clinical Hospital of the First Moscow State Medical University with no comorbidities. For every patient a gypsum model was prepared and after that to carry out the biometrical calculation. In this study two indexes were used: Pont's index and Korkhause's; using this standard analysis the narrowing of the maxilla was revealed. After using Pont's Index and Korkhaus analysis all the models were calculated by the method of Kernott with Kernott's dynamic pentagon.Results. As a result of the analysis of the control diagnostic models a narrowing of the maxilla in 69% of cases (n = 24) was revealed in all cases, the deviation of the size of the dentition was asymmetric. Thus, 65% of the surveyed models showed a narrowing on the right. This narrowing was of a different severity and averaged 15 control models.Conclusions. This shows that for the biometrics of diagnostic models it is necessary to use methods that allow to estimate the width of the dentition rows on the left and on the right separately. To correct the asymmetric narrowing of the dentition, it is preferable to use non-classical expanding devices that act equally on the left and right sides separetly.

Background: The role of fungi in cocoa crops is mainly associated with plant diseases and contamination of harvest with unwanted metabolites such as mycotoxins that can reach the final consumer. However, in recent years there has been interest in discovering other existing interactions in the environment that may be beneficial, such as antagonism, commensalism, and the production of specific enzymes, among others. Scope and approach: This review summarizes the different fungi species involved in cocoa production and the cocoa supply chain. In particular, it examines the presence of fungal species during cultivation, harvest, fermentation, drying, and storage, emphasizing the factors that possibly influence their prevalence in the different stages of production and the health risks associated with the production of mycotoxins in the light of recent literature. Key findings and conclusion: Fungi associated with the cocoa production chain have many different roles. They have evolved in a varied range of ecosystems in close association with plants and various habitats, affecting nearly all the cocoa chain steps. Reports of the isolation of 60 genera of fungi were found, of which only 19 were involved in several stages. Although endophytic fungi can help control some diseases caused by pathogenic fungi, climate change, with increased rain and temperatures, together with intensified exchanges, can favour most of these fungal infections, and the presence of highly aggressive new fungal genotypes increasing the concern of mycotoxin production. For this reason, mitigation strategies need to be determined to prevent the spread of disease-causing fungi and preserve beneficial ones.

Due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, dental treatment performed by undergraduate students at the University of Marburg/Germany was immediately stopped in spring 2020 and stepwise reinstalled under a new hygiene concept until full recovery in winter 2020/21. Patient treatment in the student courses was evaluated based on three aspects: (1) Testing of patients with a SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Antigen (SCRA) Test applied by student assistants (SA); (2) Improved hygiene regimen, with separated treatment units, cross-ventilation, pre-operative mouth rinse and rubber dam application wherever possible; (3) Recruitment of patients: 735 patients were pre-registered for the two courses; 384 patients were treated and a total of 699 tests with the SCRA test were performed by SAs. While half of the patients treated in the course were healthy, over 40% of the patients that were pre-registered but not treated in the course revealed a disease being relevant to COVID (p < 0.001). 46 patients had concerns to visit the dental hospital due to the increase of COVID incidence levels, 14 persons refused to be tested. The presented concept was suitable to enable patient treatment in the student course during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
