This study added to existing data on home school effectiveness by comparing the academic achievement of 66 home school students with 66 of their grade-level peers in traditional public schools. The two groups of students were matched on gender, race, and grade level and were administered the Woodcock-Johnson Psychoeducational Battery III. No significant difference in overall academic achievement was found between the groups. Both home school and public school students had average or above average scores in reading, math, written language, and broad knowledge (science, social studies, and humanities). The results further revealed a downward trend in math, reading and broad knowledge scores with increasing grade level. This trend suggests that home school and public school students experience a “developmental mismatch” between the changes that occur in adolescence and their school/home experiences, resulting in lower motivation, confidence, and academic performance.

We investigated the Social Network System (SNS) competencies of high school students in Japan. Student groups (from cities or regional areas) and the opinions of their teachers were compared. Twenty-five UNESCO criteria in three competency categories were selected. By two-way analysis of variance and paired-comparisons, we detected a significant difference in the opinions of students and teachers. Although the magnitude of the difference was small, by Dunnett’s multiple comparisons, the city and regional groups also differed from each other. Performance criteria items of risk awareness were valued the highest and most important in all groups; whereas technical skills and socio-cultural skills were reported as less proficient and less important by all groups. Classification of SNS-type was used, and the data of SNS sites with which the students were familiar and the mean values of related performance criteria items were applied to view the situation of students. By this approach, we confirmed that students are savvy in navigating socializing SNSs. Based on our findings, we propose important learning and societal-public activities relevant to SNSs.

Recently, morality and tolerance are among the most important concepts of education. The upbringing of morally mature children as tolerant individuals is a vital factor for individuals to develop a relationship. Moral maturity refers to the state of being competent in terms of moral emotion, thought, judgement, attitude and behaviour. A total of 43 boys and 151 girls from Altindag district of Ankara formed a sample group of 194 children. Personal Information Form, Moral Maturity Scale and Tolerance Tendency Scale were used in this study. The results revealed that according to the gender of the students, it is seen that there is a difference in tolerance acceptance, tolerance value and tolerance empathy levels. It is seen that girls’ acceptance and tolerance empathy levels are higher than boys. It is seen that there is a difference in tolerance empathy levels according to the educational level of parents. It is seen that there is a difference in tolerance empathy and tolerance acceptance levels according to the working status of parents of students. According to the monthly income level of students’ families, there was no significant difference between moral maturity, tolerance empathy, tolerance value and tolerance acceptance levels. This is thought to be due to the fact that most of the parents have a similar income level. According to the number of siblings of students, there was a significant difference in tolerance empathy and tolerance value levels. It was found that there was a relationship between students’ level of moral maturity and tolerance acceptance level. It was found that there is a relationship between tolerance empathy, tolerance acceptance level and tolerance value of students. Keywords: Moral maturity, tolerance.

This study aimed at analyzing the level of students' critical thinking skills as well as investigating the correlation between students' critical thinking skills and their grade level. A survey involving 220 pre-service chemistry teachers of Yogyakarta State University, Indonesia was conducted. The sample was taken using the convenience sampling technique. The data were collected using a Critical Thinking Rubric (OHRCT) developed by Oliver-Hoyo (2003). The result of this study shows that (i) the average score of students' critical thinking skills was still considered low (13.95±2.151), (ii) abstract and written presentation appeared as the components that obtained the highest and the lowest score respectively, (iii) significant difference was found between the score of students' critical thinking skills based on grade level in favour of junior students (p=0.000), and (iv) a moderate positive and linear correlation existed between the students' critical thinking skills and grade level (r=0.442, p=0.000). The findings indicate that the improvement in students' critical thinking skills has certain influences on the improvement of students' cognition and learning experience after attending courses in chemistry. Based on the result, several recommendations have been proposed to improve university students' critical thinking skills.

This research was motivated by several reasons: (1) there was a misconception of some elementary school geometry materials that were considered essential; (2) the form of evaluation given was dominantly objective/multiple choice; (3) teachers' teaching methods tend not to be contextual; and (4) students' way of thinking simply to take the practical one. Through this research, it is expected to obtain information about: geometrical reasoning in elementary schools according to Bruner's theory, problem solving and mathematical representations. Theresearch was conducted in a descriptive analytic form, with the following steps: (1) giving questions for the geometry reasoning test for SMP; (2) analyzing answers according to the criteria of reasoning; and (3) mapping students' answers to the results of the analysis according to the profile criteria. The data obtained were analyzed, and the results were described to illustrate the condition of the geometric reasoning abilities of elementary school students. Theresults obtained in this study were: (1) The Mastery of the concept of geometry in each junior high school/equivalent. The target with the acquisition of an average score from all schools was 55, which was quite low because there were some students who did not master the concept of geometry and there were other mathematical concepts related to solving test questions; (2) There was no significant difference in the mastery of geometry concepts for male or femalestudents for each SMP/equivalent target, except for one school, namely SMP Negeri 17, which was because males are superior to females in three questions with a difference in the percentage of numbers of significantly correct; (3) The mastery of geometry concepts in each junior high school. The target of studying each geometry material was considered good, except for question number 1 with the subject of the Pythagorean Theorem, because students were dominant in not being able to use the relationship between concepts, especially the operation ofthe compounding form and the roots.

This survey design study was designed to test whether the graph skills and affective states of middle school students about graphs differ by their gender, grade level, and graph types (line, bar, and pie). The data collection instruments consisted of two scales developed by the authors and a Graph Skills Test, which consisted of graph questions from the previous TIMSS and PISA exams. Based on the findings, while middle school students were found to succeed at reading the data level graph questions, they were found to struggle in questions requiring higher graph skills, such as graph interpretation and graph construction. As for the affective states investigated, participants were found to hold high self-efficacy beliefs and positive attitudes toward graphs. No significant difference among the dependent variables (graph skills, self-efficacy beliefs about graphs, attitudes toward graphs, and graph literacy perceptions) was found by gender; however, grade level and graph type variables were found to impact students’ graph skills, graph attitudes, and personal graph literacy perceptions. Middle school students with less school experience with graphs (seventh graders) were found to hold more positive attitudes toward graphs than the eighth graders. On the contrary, eighth graders were found to perform better at graph questions requiring interpretations of the graph data. Also, participants in all subgroups were found to hold significantly higher personal graph literacy perceptions for the bar graphs, than the line graphs and pie charts. Based on the findings of the study, while middle school students were found to hold positive affective states about graphs, they were found to lack advanced graph skills. In agreement with the previous literature, it is recommended that graph literacy should become a dedicated part of the school curriculum.
