Abstract The stops [p, b, k] often alternate with respective fricatives [f, v, χ] in Modern Hebrew (MH). This general pattern was designed to follow the spirantization process of Biblical Hebrew as it was depicted in the Masoretic orthography. While this orthography is retained in MH, its phonological infrastructure is very different from that of Biblical Hebrew, and it cannot support a phonological process of spirantization. This problematic state of affairs has been a source of confusion for many language users, as well as a source of interest for many language researchers. This paper overviews the current state of affairs with respect to the stop-fricative alternation in MH, emphasizing cases of systematic stability and instability. The apparent patterns seem to reflect speakers’ limited yet impressive ability to recruit their native knowledge of morphology and orthography to generalize a pseudo-phonological rule.

The current state of the information security domain in the United States and much of the rest of the industrialized world can best be characterized as overly optimistic. The protection of computing systems and telecommunication infrastructures from unauthorized usage, manipulation, and sabotage faces serious challenges to ensure ongoing serviceability. This is especially true when we consider our growing dependence on these infrastructures. The state of affairs regarding the security aspects of these systems is even worse. Peter G. Neumann of the Computer Science Laboratory at SRI International in Menlo Park, California states:

The general position of the law on euthanasia worldwide is that all states recognise their duty to preserve life. Courts in various jurisdictions have refused to interpret the 'right to life' or the 'right to dignity' to also include the 'right to die'. Instead, they have held that the state has a duty to protect life. Three categories can however be noted. At one extreme are those countries that have totally criminalised any appearance of euthanasia. In the middle are countries that prohibit what appears to be active euthanasia while at the same time tolerating 'dual-effect' treatment and withdrawal of artificial feeding. At the other extreme are countries that allow euthanasia. Even in this last category of countries, there are stringent guidelines embedded in the law to prevent a situation of 'free for all'. Anecdotal evidence, some empirical studies and case law seem to suggest that euthanasia goes on in many countries irrespective of the law. Euthanasia is a criminal offence in Kenya. However, there have been no empirical studies to ascertain whether euthanasia goes on in spite of the law. This article surveys the current state of the practice of euthanasia globally and narrows down to elaborate on the state of affairs in Kenya.

The Jequitinhonha Valley, located in northeast Minas Gerais, presents itself in critical socio-economicstate. Its undervelopment and its peripheral condition in relation to the other areas of the state have becomechronic. Some of the contexts that have originated the current situation can be traced back to previoussocio-spacial configurations. The geo-historical analysis of these contexts surely allows a better understandingof the issue. The study of processes related to the structuring of an urban network in the region, iniciated bythe 18th century, helps to elucidate aspects related to the current state of affairs of the Valley. In this studythe networks, constituted by road linkages, flows and urban localities associated with the structure of theterritory, are analysed, taking into consideration that the improvement of the local conditions is deeplylinked to a broader understanding of its local history.

The article discusses some areas of improvement and development of the state system of counteraction to the shadow economy in order to ensure the economic security of Russia. Based on the study of modern trends in the development of the socio-economic system of Russia, it is shown that the current state of affairs in the socio-economic system of Russia requires the development and adoption of a socio-economic policy (strategy) to counteract the shadow economy of the state, which can be understood as the activity defined by strategic and tactical plans. bodies of state power and management to dedenevize the country’s economy with clearly defined goals and objectives of each involved department. Within the framework of the proposed study, it was determined that in Russia there is no complex regulatory act that determines the policy of the state with clearly defined goals and objectives of countering the shadow economy. In the absence of such a regulatory legal act, all measures to counter the shadow economy implemented in Russia can be characterized as targeted measures to counteract individual manifestations of the shadow economy without taking into account both regional specifics and strategic interests of ensuring the economic security of the state. To solve the problems highlighted in the study and in order to improve and develop the state system for countering the shadow economy in order to ensure the economic security of Russia, within the framework of the proposed article, a mechanism for countering the shadow economy has been developed, which will ensure the coordination and participation of all interested parties in the de-shadowing of the Russian economy. The mechanism of the state system of counteraction to the shadow economy proposed in the scientific article will give an economic and social effect when introduced, which can be calculated as the ratio of the obtained positive effect from reducing the scale of the shadow sector of the economy and increasing the economic security of the state to the costs incurred for the implementation of the proposed mechanism.

The concept of scandal is a central trope of today’s journalism, ranging from political coverage of the affairs of state down to the state of affairs in the celebrity press and media. Not only is there an apparently inexhaustible public appetite for rumours, speculations and provable dark deeds and saucy goings-on fed by scandals but also a considerable section of professional journalists and photojournalists earn their crust from it. In this introductory commentary some of the key concepts defining celebrity and scandal are introduced and some observations on the current state of public culture in New Zealand are examined.

Abstract This study is the last one of a three-part series reviewing the history of Hungarian language technical terminology. In this article, we strive to present all the factors that have influenced the state of Hungarian technical language and terminology at a particular period of time during the past hundred years. Over a long period of time, the most important part in establishing and disseminating adequate Hungarian terms was played by standards, dictionaries and the publishing of technical literature. Since this situation has dramatically changed by now, after presenting the current state of affairs, we make suggestions on handling terminological problems emerging in the course of technical communication, the instruction of technical language or the translation of technical literature.

This article considers the legacy of James Barr’s The Semantics of Biblical Language. Ideally, his criticisms of theology’s use of philology would have been assimilated already into the field. But the kinds of abuses that Barr so clearly identified and critiqued are still commonly found. As a way of exploring this state of affairs, the case of μετάνοια (“repentance”) in New Testament studies is taken up in the first part of this article.
The second part of the article considers the ways in which Barr’s thoroughgoing critique of its specious appropriation for theology has left many justifiably skittish about employing it to any significant effect and has contributed, perhaps, to a sense that ongoing engagement with the original languages of biblical literature is not a necessity and, certainly, not an avenue to creative scholarship. Examples will be adduced from biblical Hebrew ידע (“know”), לב (“heart”), and אהב (“love”) for how we might approach language and its deployment as a way of engaging difference, in this case, in and through ancient Israelite thinking about “mind” and “emotions.”
The article concludes with the suggestion that we might move the practice of philology forward in biblical studies by attending more fully to the positionality of its practitioners. In particular, what emerges throughout the study is the dominance of a certain interiorizing language of the self, whereby biblical Hebrew terms are made to conform to a modern dichotomy of mind and body.
