The public rely on the police to enforce the law, and the police rely on the public to report crime and assist them with their enquiries. Police action or inaction can also impact on public willingness to informally intervene in community problems. In this paper we examine the formal-informal control nexus in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on a survey sample of 1,595 Australians during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, we examine the relationship between police effectiveness, collective efficacy, and public willingness to intervene when others violate lockdown restrictions. We find that perceptions of police effectiveness in handling the COVID-19 crisis has a positive impact on the public’s willingness to intervene when others violate lockdown restrictions.

Technological advances in the 21st century raise the importance of the process of accessing and evaluating knowledge. Knowledge sharing is important in individual level as much as is in organizational level. Effective knowledge sharing among the members of an organization makes a positive impact on the realization of goals set by the organization. Knowledge sharing positively affects the performance of the employees who work to reach these goals. Moreover, in the study behaviors of the individuals communicating during the knowledge sharing process are classified as ethical and unethical. Increase in unethical behaviors decrease the effect of knowledge sharing on the employee performance. Unethical behaviors in an organization are classified as behaviors against shareholders, clients, suppliers, employees as well as against the public. This study examines the role of unethical behaviors on the effect of knowledge sharing on the employee performance in the organizational level.

In this paper, we investigate the effects of stakeholder protection and public trust on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities of listed enterprises on the Chinese Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Board. We find that the degree of stakeholder protection has a significantly positive impact on SME CSR activities. The public trust is not associated with SME CSR disclosure significantly; it has a significantly negative impact on the SME implementation levels of CSR activities. Furthermore, the moderating effect of public trust on the relationship between the degree of stakeholder protection and SME CSR activities is not supported by our empirical study.

The purpose of this article is to study the relationship between the competitiveness of small- and medium-sized companies and the public support offered to them in the form of direct subsidies allocated through European structural funds. Using micro-data gathered by the Operational Programme Enterprise and Innovations for Competitiveness (OPEIC) of European structural funds from 2007–2013, this analysis focuses on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Czech Republic. We employed a counterfactual approach based on Propensity Score Matching (PSM), Nearest Neighbour Estimator and Difference in Difference design with two groups of companies: applicants receiving support and a control group. When using value added and value added per labour cost as the competitiveness indicators for SMEs, we found that Cohesion Policy (CP) support had no statistically significant impact on these indicators. On the other hand, we a found positive impact on personnel expenditure. These results highlight a number of doubts regarding the effectiveness of SME cohesion funding, given that a rise in personnel expenditure, which is not supported by an appropriate increase in added value, is unlikely to be sustainable.

Myths have always been a source of inspiration for literary and artistic creation because of their surreal image and idealized vision. To inherit the national culture and the spirit, many films eastern and western take mythical elements as a medium of meaning. So, has the appearance of mythical elements in the films received a positive response from the audience? Based on the films ( n = 919) released in mainland China cinemas from September 2015 to September 2018, this article uses the method of regression analysis and Latent Dirichlet allocation topic model to verify the relationship between mythical elements and audience acceptance. The results show that (a) mythical elements have no significant impact on the box office revenues; (b) and have no positive impact on the film ratings; (c) there is no significant mythical topic in the film reviews of mythical films, which shows that the public in modern society does not show sensitivity to the mythical elements in films. Finally, we discuss the possible causes of the results and put forward corresponding suggestions for the producers of mythical films.

The European Landscape Convention (ELC) emphasises that the public should be extensively involved in the processes of landscape protection, planning and management. In spite of the emerging interest in the relationship between animals and landscapes in the study of animal geography, little is known about the influence of the landscape-animal component on public aspirations and the values attributed to landscape. We conducted a survey in the form of an image-based questionnaire in order to evaluate the influence of certain animal species, in this case livestock, on landscape preferences. The results show that all grazing animals have a positive impact on landscape preferences, although some species seem more popular than others. The preference for scenes with animals decreases, however, when compared with scenes with other landscape features (vegetation, traditional buildings or water). Significant differences in preferences for scenes with animals were observed according to certain sociodemographic variables such as gender, familiarity with the landscape and direct involvement in livestock farming. Of the groups surveyed, livestock farmers showed the strongest preferences for the scenes with animals. The findings of this study can be applied within the citizen participation policies encouraged by the ELC, as well as in the protection, management and planning of rural landscapes in which livestock is an appreciable feature.

Studies in the presence of new media and its relationship with conventional media recently could be mapped into three trends. Firstly, studies in media competition between traditional and online media. These studies, generally put online media both in a position that is superior to traditional media, and also as a complement to the existence of traditional media. Second, studies that explore patterns of online and print media consumption that show dualism in the use of media by the public. These study highlight how consumers use online and print media together and are complementary (complementary models). Third, studies that look at the impact of social media on journalism practices that give a new character to the system and mechanism of media work. This article will explain the relationship between the growth of new media, media competition and its impacts on the mode of news reporting in North Sumatra, Indonesia. This article starts with the assumption that the massive expansion of new media can also have a positive impact on the industry and media organizations.
