Lay Meanings and Associated Experiences of Nonattachment (Anasakti): A Study From India

Anasakti, translated as “nonattachment” in English, is one of the important philosophical concepts of Hinduism and Buddhism. It has also been studied in contemporary psychology using various measures of anasakti. However, there is a dearth of studies that have qualitatively investigated anasakti from the lay or “folk” perspective. This mixed-method study aimed to uncover subjective meanings and personal belief systems related to anasakti, as well as practices and experiences related to the lay understanding of anasakti among a sample of 240 urban educated adults (female = 104, male = 136) in India. Three structured scales (Test of asakti –anasakti, Scale of anasakti, Nonattachment Scale) were used to assess the levels of anasakti, while a semistructured questionnaire elicited personal meanings, experiences, and associated behaviors and beliefs related to anasakti. Thematic analysis revealed five broad thematic categories covering the qualitative data: personal meanings of anasakti, experiences, benefits, efficacy, and pathways. Roles of desire and attachment were also discussed. Quantitative results indicated higher levels of anasakti in older age groups, suggesting that anasakti may progress with age. These findings have several implications for future research and interventions.

 This research was conducted to investigate the perceptions of persons with disabilities and stakeholders regarding the promotion and development of Friendly and Inclusive Communities in Bantul Regency, DIY and Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi. The study was designed using transformative mixed-method, with the framework of KIPA (Knowledge, Inclusion, Participation, and Access) as a theoretical framework core. The first step was carried out by an empirical survey through distributing questionnaires to 48 respondents in Bantul Regency and 52 respondents in Kendari City. The results of data analysis from questionnaire contents were processed through descriptive statistics to describe respondents' perceptions quantitatively. Quantitative results are used as a reference in qualitative data collection, namely through in-depth interviews with selected respondents. The results of the study show that both persons with disabilities and stakeholders have a positive perception of the promotion and development of a friendly and inclusive community in their area. Although knowledge about disability, inclusion and the issues that surround it is still limited, but both persons with disabilities and stakeholders claim the need for a Friendly and Inclusive Community to be realized. Repondents of persons with disabilities also added that participation and access to development by and for persons with disabilities needs to be improved both in terms of quantity and quality.Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menginvestigasi persepsi penyandang disabilitas dan stakeholders mengenai promosi dan pengembangan Komunitas Ramah dan Inklusif di Kabupaten Bantul, DIY dan Kota Kendari, Sulawesi Tenggara. Penelitian didesain menggunakan transformative mixed-method, dengan kerangka KIPA (Knowledge, Inclusion, Participation, and Access) sebagai core theoretical framework. Langkah pertama dilakukan dengan survey empiris melalui penyebaran kuesioner kepada 48 responden di Kabupaten Bantul dan 52 responden di Kota Kendari. Hasil analisis data dari isian kuesioner diolah melalui statistik deskriptif untuk menggambarkan persepsi responden secara kuantitatif. Hasil kuantitatif dijadikan sebagai rujukan dalam pengambilan data secara kualitatif, yaitu melalui in-depth interview kepada responden terpilih. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan baik penyandang disabilitas maupun stakeholders memiliki persepsi yang positif terhadap promosi dan pengembangan Komunitas Ramah dan Inklusif di daerah mereka. Meskipun pengetahuan mengenai disabilitas, inklusi dan isu-isu yang melingkupinya masih terbatas, namun baik penyandang disabiltias dan stakeholders mengaku perlunya Komunitas Ramah dan Inklusif untuk diwujudkan. Reponden penyandang disabilitas juga menambahkan bahwa partisipasi dan akses pembangunan oleh dan untuk penyandang disabilitas perlu ditingkatkan baik dari segi kuantitas maupun kualitas.

PURPOSE: Nigeria is experiencing increased rate of drug use among young people. Studies have shown a very high rate of drug use and addiction among university undergraduates and this study was aimed at examining the experiences and meanings associated with drug abuse and addiction among university students while also identifying the causative factors of the use of psychoactive substances.METHODS: The study which is a mixed method made use of an adapted and validated version of the drug abuse screening test (DAST-10) scale to measure drug use and emotional intelligence questionnaire was used to measure an aspect of psychosocial functioning and interviews were used to explore the subjective experiences of six participants. Both the purposive and snowballing sampling techniques were employed. The quantitative data generated were coded and entered into the statistical package for social sciences and results were presented using descriptive tables.RESULTS: The results showed no significant relationship and a negative correlation between drug abuse and emotional intelligence (r = -0.229, p> 0.05). The qualitative data was transcribed and coded using thematic coding where themes are extracted from each transcript. The most commonly used substances were codeine (85%), alcohol (75%), cannabis (70%), tramadol (65%), rohypnol (65%), and tobacco (50%). Qualitative data shows that the participants exercised some sort of willpower over the use of psychoactive substances and the major reason for use was to seek a new experience.CONCLUSION: This study brought to the fore the evidence that personal meanings and experiences come into play in taking decisions on drinking or substance use and this should be considered when interventions are planned.

<p class="Abstract">Teachers play an important role in children’s sexual development, but they have limited knowledge and different views about communicating sexuality. This study aims to determine teachers’ knowledge and beliefs related to sexuality education and to investigate the predictors of the beliefs. This research used quantitative and qualitative approach (mixed method). A total of 40 kindergarten teachers were asked to fill out a questionnaire describing teachers’ knowledge and demographic information, as well as a scale of beliefs about what teachers feel in teaching sexuality education. Interview techniques were used to gather information about the factors influencing teachers’ beliefs. Quantitative results showed that teachers had limited knowledge (M = 8.75, SD = 2.56) and had low belief (M = 2.75, SD = 0.28) in teaching sexuality education to children. Based on qualitative data, the learning resources in teaching sexuality was very limited. These results served useful evidence in developing appropriate and effective guidance programs to ensure teachers to educate sexuality education in a timely and appropriate manner to the children's development.</p><p><strong><em> </em></strong></p><p class="Abstract"><strong>Keywords: </strong><em>teachers, children, sexuality, knowledge, belief.</em><strong></strong></p>

Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical experiences of school-based speech-language pathologists related to stuttering by exploring common clinical situations and challenges speech-language pathologists face when working with individuals who stutter and their families. Method This study utilized a mixed method survey design. A total of 200 participants completed an anonymous survey consisting of closed- and open-ended questions regarding knowledge for different age groups (preschool, school-age, adolescent), and confidence in assessment and treatment skills with stuttering. Results Findings revealed that participants generally were least comfortable assessing and treating preschoolers who stutter. Furthermore, qualitative analysis revealed a variety of common and challenging clinical scenarios across all three age levels. Conclusions Overall, it is important to recognize that school-based clinicians have varying experiences and perspectives when working with children who stutter. Several factors may contribute to this including academic and clinical training in stuttering. Future research is also discussed.

Previous studies have suggested that parental divorce influences the relational beliefs and orientation toward marriage of adolescents and emerging adults. Most of this previous work has been limited to links between parental divorce and global attitudes toward marriage or attitudes toward divorce. Using a mixed-method design, the current study explored links between parental divorce and various aspects of emerging adults’ marital paradigms using cross-sectional, longitudinal, and qualitative data among a sample of unmarried emerging adults. Quantitative results suggested that parental divorce was linked to a variety of negative marital beliefs including less overall marital importance, less marital permanence, and less marital centrality. There was no evidence of longitudinal changes in these associations over time. Qualitative results among emerging adults with divorced parents revealed several key themes in how emerging adults viewed the impact of parental divorce, suggesting implications for perceived interpersonal competence and the internalization of negative marital beliefs stemming from parental role modeling.

Aims: This study aims to examine if age and marital status can predict the risk for binge alcohol use (BAU) among adults with a major depressive episode (MDE). Methods: Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) 2018 National Survey for Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) were analyzed. The unweighted sample included 6,999 adults representing a weighted population size of 33,900,452.122 in the US. Results and Conclusions: The findings of this retrospective research confirmed that age and marital status significantly predicted BAU in the past month among adults with MDE. Adults with MDE at higher risk for BAU were adults under the age of 50, adults who were never married, and adults who were divorced/separated. Special attention must be paid to those in age groups under 50, never married, and have been separated/divorced who are particularly at-risk for future alcohol abuse. Future research should consider examining additional potential confounders for BAU among other at-risk populations.

Background: Veterinary work is considered high risk and involves working with a range of hazards including large animals, high workload and long hours. A key potential hazard is making home visits and providing out of hours emergency care where vets often work alone, without support, and must travel long distances. The current study aimed to examine UK veterinary perceptions of safety climate, lone working and on-call tasks to gain a deeper understanding of the risk and hazards involved. Method: An online mixed-methods survey was used to gather quantitative data relevant to practice safety climate, and qualitative data regarding veterinary perception of lone working and on-call work. A sample of 76 UK veterinarians were recruited.Results: The quantitative results suggest that there may be practice safety climate issues around a lack of communication and discussion pertaining to safety, particularly in terms of maintaining personal safety. Key themes within the qualitative data included feeling pressure to treat patients, dealing with difficult clients, travel concerns and feeling unsafe when meeting clients alone and in remote locations. Conclusion: These findings indicate that personal safety requires more attention and discussion within veterinary practices, and that safety protocols and requirements should be shared with clients.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to examine the validity of the Gender Dysphoria (GD) diagnoses in the Swedish National Patient Register (NPR), to discuss different register-based definitions of GD and to investigate incidence trends. We collected data on all individuals with registered GD diagnoses between 2001 and 2016 as well as data on the coverage in the NPR. We regarded gender confirming medical intervention (GCMI) as one proxy for a clinically valid diagnosis and calculated the positive predictive value (PPV) for receiving GCMI for increasing number of registered GD diagnoses. We assessed crude and coverage-adjusted time trends of GD during 2004–2015 with a Poisson regression, using assigned sex and age as interaction terms. The PPV for receiving GCMI was 68% for ≥ 1 and 79% for ≥ 4 GD-diagnoses. The incidence of GD was on average 35% higher with the definition of ≥ 1 compared to the definition of ≥ 4 diagnoses. The incidence of GD, defined as ≥ 4 diagnoses increased significantly during the study period and mostly in the age categories 10–17 and 18–30 years, even after adjusting for register coverage. We concluded that the validity of a single ICD code denoting clinical GD in the Swedish NPR can be questioned. For future research, we propose to carefully weight the advantages and disadvantages of different register-based definitions according to the individual study’s needs, the time periods involved and the age-groups under study.

Abstract This article contends that prior research on the behaviour of Chinese local cadres pays limited attention to their motivation for avoiding blame. Using qualitative data from three field studies conducted in Guangdong province, the study focuses on blame avoidance in the cadre responsibility system, which is recognized as an important instrument for state capacity building. Our analysis uncovers three major discursive strategies used by grassroots cadres to manage blame either before or after it is apportioned: de-legitimating performance standards, re-attributing blame and transferring blame risk. We find that local cadres have a role as blame makers in shifting blame and accusations. This finding challenges the conventional view, which typically sees local officials as blame takers. The article concludes by elaborating on the wider implications of this finding and proposing avenues for future research.
