Evaluative and Behavioral Correlates to Intrarehearsal Achievement in High School Bands

The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships of teaching effectiveness, ensemble performance quality, and selected rehearsal procedures to various measures of intrarehearsal achievement (i.e., musical improvement exhibited by an ensemble during the course of a single rehearsal). Twenty-nine high school bands were observed in two rehearsals of a common music selection. Separate panels of experts evaluated ensemble performance quality from audio recordings and teacher effectiveness from video recordings. Rehearsal frames were identified in second-day rehearsals, and “before” and “after” rehearsal trials for each target ( N = 404) were extracted and evaluated for achievement. Selected rehearsal procedures within each frame also were measured. Results indicated no significant relationships between rehearsal effectiveness scores and any of five conceptualizations of intrarehearsal achievement. Significant, positive correlations were found between performance quality and three achievement computations, and between performance quality and rehearsal effectiveness. With one exception, none of the selected rehearsal procedures were associated with achievement differences within rehearsal frames. These findings suggest limitations of considering ensemble teacher evaluation in terms of student achievement. An ensemble’s extant skill level may contribute more to short-term rehearsal achievement than does the quality of its conductor’s rehearsing.

In this study, the authors investigated effects of aural model—supported rehearsal preparation on selected behavioral and evaluative elements of novice teachers’ rehearsals. Sixteen preservice music teachers conducted high school bands in four 15-minute rehearsals (two rehearsals on two different pieces).To prepare for their rehearsals on one piece, participants were given only the conductor score, while for the other piece, they were given both a score and a recorded model of the piece on an audio compact disc.Video recordings of all 64 rehearsals were systematically observed for teachers’ verbalizations across several musical and teaching variables. Participants also completed post-rehearsal evaluations of their teaching and of the ensemble’s playing. Differences between conditions were small, with teachers’ verbalizations reflecting a proportionally greater concern for accuracy in the model-supported condition. Evaluations of rehearsals were less self-directed and were more critical of the ensemble, a finding consistent with previous research.There was virtually no difference in responses between conditions for conductor expressiveness.

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate expertise-related differences in the evaluation of moment-to-moment rehearsal achievement. Nonmusic majors, music education majors, and expert music teachers ( N = 60) listened to 18 “before” and “after” pairs of rehearsal trials of various high school bands in their pursuit of proximal rehearsal goals, or targets. These pairs of rehearsal trials (“dyads”) were presented to participants on audio compact discs without evidence of the band directors’ intervening rehearsal procedures. The performance quality of the ensembles heard on the recordings was either high or low, and the targets they pursued addressed Tone Quality/Intonation, Musicianship/Expressiveness, or Rhythm/Articulation. The dependent measure was participants’ evaluation of the extent of improvement heard within each dyad. A significant main effect was found for listener expertise, with experts evaluating ensembles’ achievement on these targets most critically (i.e., lower), and with nonmajors offering the highest evaluation scores. No main effect on evaluation scores was found for ensemble performance quality. Results suggest that expert music teachers exercise judgments about moment-to-moment rehearsal achievement according to an internalized standard rather than to the immediately preceding rehearsal trial. Findings are discussed in consideration of the Model of Expert Teaching (Berliner, 1986).

Abstract Implementation of demonstration method in the teaching of chemistry is assigned as the right strategy to improve students’ achievement as it is proved that the method can bring an abstract concept to reality in the class. The study is conducted to vocational high school students in SMKN1 Pargetteng getteng Sengkut Pakfak Barat at accademic year 2013. The teaching has been carried out three cycles on the teaching of chemistry topic of colloid system. In the study, the class is divided into two class, experiment class and control class. The demontration method is used to teach students in experimental class while the teaching in control class is conducted with lecture method. Both are evaluated by using multiple choise tests before and after the teaching procedures, and the ability of students to answer the problems are assigned as students’ achievements. The results showed that demonstration method improved students’ achievement in chemistry. The students in experimental class who are taughed with demonstration method (M=19.08±0.74) have higher achievements compare with control class (M=12.91±2.52), and both are significantly different (tcalculation 22.85 > ttable 1.66). The effectivity of demostration method in experimental class (97%) is found higer compare to conventional method in control class (91%).

The responsibility of Islamic education cannot be carried out unilaterally. Ki Hajar Dewantara stated that it requires the cooperation of three components which called as tripusat pendidikan education (center of three in education), they are families, educational institutions, and society. Those three components are one unit and complement each other. This is what happened at MTs Zainur Ridla (Islamic Junior High School Zainur Ridla) and MTs. Bustanul Ulum (Islamic Junior High School Bustanul Ulum), both of them are in Nonggunong District, Sumenep Regency. The findings in this research indicate that student’s guardians in MTs Zainur Ridla and MTs Bustanul Ulum Nonggunong have awareness about the responsibility of Islamic education. Second, all teacher councils in those two Islamic Junior High School stated that educating responsibility was on their control with habituation for their students in the form of reciting Shalawat Nariyah, reciting short surahs before the lesson began, praying before and after the lesson, shaking hands with teacher councils when coming and going home. Third, the participation of the society in realizing the responsibility of Islamic education through the media and the tradition of Kompolan. Fourth, the pattern of cooperation between madrasah (school) and student’s guardians in the form of: Home visits, inviting student’s guardians, forming madrasah supporting body, and report cards. While the pattern of cooperation between madrasah and society is their involvement in PHBI (Commemoration Islamic Feast Day) activities, their involvement in camp activities, their involvement in accepting new students, and their involvement in enforcing the discipline and regulations at madrasah.

Abstract: Background Locations concentrated with High School (HS) students tend to have lower out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survival rates. Mobile applications (apps) have the capability to augment cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skill retention as a low-cost, accessible training method. Methods An iterative process to develop an app to reinforce CPR skills emphasizing hand placement, compression rate, real-time feedback, and recurring tips is described. The app was tested on HS students to measure its impact on quality and comfort of CPR using Likert surveys and skills assessments before and after one month of usage. CPR Score and compression rate were measured using the Laerdal™ Little Anne Manikin QCPR software. Results Fourteen HS students participated in a prospective observational study. It was found that the use of the developed app was associated with improved CPR performance (80.43% v. 87.86%, p=0.01-0.02, 95% CI=2.20-12.66) after one month. Additionally, improvements were demonstrated in compression rate accuracy (21.43% v. 64.29%, p=0.041, 95% CI=0.132-0.725), increased comfort performing CPR (3.86 v. 4.79, p<0.001, 95% CI =0.99-1.00) and comfort performing CPR on strangers (2.71 v. 4.42, p<0.001, 95% CI=1.24-2.19). In addition, for every time the app was used, CPR performance increased by 0.5668% (p=0.0182). Conclusion Findings suggest that mobile apps may have promising implications as augmentative tools for CPR curriculums.

AbstractIn cervical dystonia, functional MRI (fMRI) evidence indicates changes in several resting state networks, which revert in part following the botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT) therapy. Recently, the involvement of the cerebellum in dystonia has gained attention. The aim of our study was to compare connectivity between cerebellar subdivisions and the rest of the brain before and after BoNT treatment. Seventeen patients with cervical dystonia indicated for treatment with BoNT were enrolled (14 female, aged 50.2 ± 8.5 years, range 38–63 years). Clinical and fMRI examinations were carried out before and 4 weeks after BoNT injection. Clinical severity was evaluated using TWSTRS. Functional MRI data were acquired on a 1.5 T scanner during 8 min rest. Seed-based functional connectivity analysis was performed using data extracted from atlas-defined cerebellar areas in both datasets. Clinical scores demonstrated satisfactory BoNT effect. After treatment, connectivity decreased between the vermis lobule VIIIa and the left dorsal mesial frontal cortex. Positive correlations between the connectivity differences and the clinical improvement were detected for the right lobule VI, right crus II, vermis VIIIb and the right lobule IX. Our data provide evidence for modulation of cerebello-cortical connectivity resulting from successful treatment by botulinum neurotoxin.

Galectin-3 (gal-3) is a multifunctional regulator of various biological processes and diseases, which are common comorbidities in psoriasis. Data regarding potential diagnostic role of gal-3 in psoriasis are insufficient. Serum gal-3 levels were evaluated before and after twelve weeks of treatment with acitretin or methotrexate in 31 patients with plaque-type psoriasis and compared to 11 healthy control group. The mean serum galectin-3 level in patients with psoriasis was significantly higher compared to the control group (p < 0.01). In patients with obesity and long-lasting psoriasis (>20 years) positive relations of gal-3 and PASI were noted. In psoriatics with low gal-3 levels, positive correlations between the gal-3 and BMI, glucose level, and with the latter in short-lasting psoriasis (<20 years) were noted. In the long history of psoriasis, gal-3 was negatively correlated with lipids levels. The Gal-3 level might be a multifaceted modulator of the course of psoriasis and predictive factor of cardiometabolic comorbidities’ development, especially in patients with a long history of the disease or obesity. Patients with low serum gal-3 and short history of psoriasis are presumably at greater risk of diabetes. In patients with long-lasting psoriasis and concomitant obesity, gal-3 may exert a protective role against dyslipidemia or perhaps further CMD development.

This research aimed to examine positive behavioral support by teacher had been trained to reduce off-task behavior students. The participants of students was second grade of senior high school at Banjarmasin. The reason for using this design was to identifiying behavior target repeatedly with a certain time period. The instruments was be used to take data from observation form positive behavioral support and off-task behavior. The result ofanalysis data was by using visual analysis and qualitative analysis. From two of analysis indicated that there was different between before and after positive behavioral support implemented by teacher and off-task behavior of two students were reduced into lower frequency.

The aim of this research is to determine the correlation between perceived class climate, motivation for achievement and school success among elementary and high school students. The research was conducted on a sample of 400 subjects. The instrument used for class climate survey is an Attitude scale, created as the combination of two instruments for measuring class climate. The MOP/D scale was used to survey motivation for achievement. The obtained results show that the quality of the overall class climate is not high, while the scores on the three dimensions of the class climate indicate that the students perceive Class Cohesion as the most favourable one, then the Teachers? Support and finally the Order and the Organisation. Significant differences in perceptions of class climate were found concerning age. Significant differences in perceptions of climate (both in the overall and in the Teachers? Support dimension) were also found with respect to the gender of the students. The findings indicate low positive correlations between perceived class climate and the motivation for achievement, and also between school success and the motivation for achievement. No correlation was found between the perceived class climate and school success. More detailed research shows that the climate dimensions Teachers? Support and Order and Organisation are significant predictors of the overall motivation for achievement and the Learning dimension, and that they are positively correlated. Learning and Persistence, the dimensions of the motivation for achievement, were found to be significant predictors of school success. A perceived class climate did not prove to be a significant predictor of school success, except for the Class Cohesion dimension, only on the subsample of high school students.
