This exploratory study investigated the effect of Jungian-oriented group dreamwork on spiritual well-being and the related constructs of purpose in life and social interest. Participants were students at a religiously oriented liberal arts college. An experimental design with matching was employed. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) followed by univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used. Power and effect size analyses were also employed. The authors are cautious in their interpretation due to small group sizes and the exploratory nature of the research. Nevertheless, the findings suggest some statistical support for the efficacy of a Jungian-oriented dream appreciation group model to enhance spiritual well-being, purpose in life, and social interest.

Traditionally regarded as high-art, poetry is often seen as a superior form of literary achievement consecrating in verse worldviews and lives connected to ideal, transcendental realms, the pursuance of which supposedly leads to some kind of ideal health and spiritual well-being. The poet WB Yeats (Nobel Prize in Literature, 1923), who believed in the power of poetry to reveal realities and states of such perfection, thereby giving purpose to mundane life, likened this effect of poetry to the fashioning of statues as monuments of unageing intellect. However, contradictorily, he also questioned the value of poetry thus conceived by questioning whether it is healthy to aspire to embody poetically consecrated ideals in real life. Yeats’s dilemmatic negotiation between these two positions suggests that better personal well-being can be achieved in living an enlightening life by being mindful of the body’s sensuality and materiality. In poetic explorations of the ways in which idealism and sensuality can affect how we live our lives, Yeats used real-life examples of people he knew, often important public figures in Irish social and political history. The present paper frames these explorations in terms of Yeats’s concepts of living stream and stone/statuary, augmented with Bruno Latour’s concepts of traditional subject and articulated body, discussed in relation to purpose in life and closeness and empathy, proposing that an overly idealistic ‘poetic’ lifestyle can have adverse effects, whereas poetry that increases one’s awareness of oneself as articulated body is conducive to better health and well-being.

Previous publications of this experiment have based their significance on objective tests of comprehension. Now, with more relevant criteria for rating the essay answers, it is clear that imagery produces significant gains in comprehension of college history text passages – as measured by free-response tests. This experiment used original and revised passages from a standard American History college text. It tested the interest and the comprehension of these passages by 192 subjects who were entering freshmen at a well-known liberal arts college. The experiment compared the two treatments of four different war passages, presented in every combination and sequence in a completely balanced design. Analysis of variance established that significantly higher scores resulted from the revised treatments. This conclusion points a way, through the use of imagery, to improve college history texts and possibly others. This finding reinforces the conclusion that appropriate imagery enhances the readability of college history textbooks.

Background Spiritual Well-Being (SWB) is an important aspect of health. Since soldiers, as members of community, are faced with numerous spiritual, psychological, and physical problems, belief in spirituality can play an important role in explaining their purpose in life (PIL). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate SWB, PIL, and the relationship between these two concepts in conscripts. In this cross-sectional study, 301 soldiers were selected by available sampling method from one of the military barracks in Iran 2019. Data were collected using the demographic, SWB, and PIL questionnaires. The results showed that SWB of the soldiers were at the high level (100.6 ± 12.30) and their PIL were at the moderate level (112.92 ± 13.70). Furthermore, a direct and intermediate relationship was observed between the soldiers' SWB and PIL (P <0.001, r = 0.50). Based on the findings, increased SWB enhanced PIL in soldiers and vice versa. To increase generalizability of the data, studies over a larger statistical population are recommended in different cultures. Findings of this study can also identify the interventional strategies to increase the soldiers' purpose in life.

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is a serious problem and patients need active self-care. This study focuses on the relationship between self-care and its predictive factors in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: This multicenter correlational study was conducted on 201 HD patients referring to HD centers in the west of Tehran, Iran. A multi-stage sampling method was used to select the samples. Data were collected using self-care Scale, Paloutzian-Ellison Spiritual Well-Being Scale, and Connor Davidson Resilience Questionnaires. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 13 and descriptive statistics and linear regression with stepwise method. Results: The mean (SD) scores of self-care, resilience, and spiritual well-being were 35.5 (5.69), 53.4 (12.94), and 97.4 (17.9), respectively. Univariate analysis showed that self-care had a statistically significant relationship with gender, occupation, education, being diabetic, and hyperlipidemia. Self-care positively correlated with the resilience and negatively correlated with age. Multivariate regression indicated that the resilience (β=0.78, P=0.001), being diabetic (β=-0.09, P=0.01), and age (β=-0.11, P=0.005) could be predictors of self-care. These variables accounted for 78% of variance in self-care in HD patients. Conclusion: Our results showed that resilience was positively correlated with self–care, but being diabetic and age were negatively correlated with self-care in HD patients. Therefore, the health care providers should pay more attention to HD patients who are diabetic and older, as they are at a higher risk of having impaired self-care.

Spiritual well-being is the affirmation of one’s life in a relation to external world, one’s ownself and a transcendental power like God. It reflects positive feelings, attitudes, and perceptions leading to a sense of identity, wholeness, peace, harmony, and purpose in life. In this study, it is predicted that individuals with high spiritual well-being will be more spiritually resistant during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is one of the most noteworthy periods when people need to be psychologically strong and resilient. In this study, resilience has been defined as the individual endurance against difficulties and the ability to bounce back and even get better. Hence we hypothesized that spiritual well-being of individuals will be effective on their resilience. We conducted our study in Turkey among adults older than 20 years old. We obtained 384 usable data and we analysed our date by using SPSS 20.0 program. Results confirmed the assumption of this study, regarding spiritual well-being/ resilience relationship.

The hypothesis that High and Low Spiritual Well-being groups have different personality profiles was tested with 319 psychology undergraduates (132 men and 187 women) who completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory and the Spiritual Well-being Scale for partial course credit. Univariate analyses of variance indicated that the High Spiritual Well-being group scored lower on Neuroticism and higher or Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness than the Low Spiritual Well-being group. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated that the two groups had significantly different personality profiles, supporting the hypothesis.

Spiritual well-being is integral in seeking meaning and purpose in life. Related to this is resiliency, which is a dynamic attribute of bouncing back from difficult situations. Thus, this descriptive-correlational study determines the degree of spiritual well-being and the level of resiliency of the diocesan seminarians of Antique. Spiritual Well-being Scale and Resilience Scale standardized tests were used. The findings indicate that the degree of spiritual well-being of seminarians is high which indicates that the seminarians possess a certain degree of satisfaction and manifest a clear sense of purpose in life. On the other hand, the level of resiliency of the diocesan seminarians of Antique is "on the low end" which signifies that as a whole, they might be experiencing some depression and anxiety in their lives. Finally, there is a significant relationship between spirituality and resiliency. The study recommends designing an enhanced career guidance program for the formation of the seminarians.
