Early adolescents (aged 12-15) were observed during dyadic conflict discussions with their siblings ( n = 23) and mothers ( n = 32) in their homes. The verbal conflict behaviors and affect of family members were coded continuously. Sequential analyses identified temporal associations between individuals’ affect and their own and their partners’ verbal conflict behaviors. In addition, within-family and across-context similarities in behavior were examined. Results revealed that while many links between emotion and behavior were consistent with previous research (e.g., attack/assert when frowning/upset, withdraw/concede when sad), several differences emerged depending on the relationship (sibling vs. mother-adolescent) and position in the family (e.g., adolescent vs. mother). Furthermore, many within-family similarities were observed in responses to emotion, while adolescents showed few similarities in their behavior across contexts. Results are discussed in relation to the developmental context of early adolescence and family systems theory.

The research considers Russian folk tales, the characters of which are a wolf, fox and hare. It is substantiated that in Russian tales, a WOLF, FOX and HARE have representative qualities – they serve as a representative of a person, that is, they are quite definite metaphorical representatives of a person’s behavior strategy, actions and behavior in the family. Images of these animals, widely presented in the folklore and ethnographic context, reflect a typical pattern of behavior in the family, thinking and appreciation of any person with a Russian mentality. It is emphasized that the roots of Russian folklore are deeply and inextricably linked with its basic family values, which in folklore reflect the images of the animal world, presented in a bright and accessible artistic form. Images of a wolf, fox and hare are transmitted over many generations, through folklore texts, introducing both children and adults to the family's basic values and consolidating a strong harmonious national and cultural foundation. It is proved that in Russian folk tales, the relationship between a wolf and a fox is built taking into account the gender factor, which allows to reveal the pattern of behavior in the relationship between a man and a woman.

The study explored the relationship between black mothers- and daughters-in-law in Pretoria North, South Africa. The theoretical paradigm of the family systems theory provides a perspective on the dynamics of the mother- and daughter-in-law relationship. A qualitative approach allowed the researcher to obtain rich data from in-depth interviews with 20 mothers-in-law and 20 daughters-in-law who had been in a mother-daughter-in-law relationship for at least 6 months. Phenomenology was also used as a design that guided the research process to allow participants to express the meanings that they had attached to their own experiences of the relationship. From the analysis, six major themes emerged regarding the dynamics that influence the mother-daughter-in-law relationship. These themes included the quality of mother-daughter-in-law relationship, first meeting, expectations, importance of having a good relationship, roles of the makoti and mamazala, as well as reflections on the mother-daughter-in-law relationship. The results of the study indicated that both mothers- and daughters-in-law perceive that it is important to have a good relationship with each other for the smooth continuity of the family. Furthermore, the results of this study highlighted the complicated family systems that exist within the in-law relationships among modern black South African families.

Families play an important role in society, both in human sustenance and individual development. Family systems theory views the family as a series of interconnected parts that when functioning properly, provide individual members with multiple benefits. Interaction with external systems, such as sport, school or church, can have positive and negative impacts on the family. It is unclear, however, what elements of sport relate to specific outcomes. The purpose of this study is to better understand the relationship between elite youth sport participation and family units, and how these two spheres, individually and in combination, impact family functioning. In-depth, purposeful interviews with seven “sport families” revealed that in addition to the depletion of resources (financial and time), elite sport engagement strongly detracts from the marital dyad and family unit receiving sufficient time and attention for proper functioning. The results also offer insight into how the leagues can be better managed such that they positively contribute to family functioning. Specifically, the results indicate that leagues can aid in strengthening family functioning through allowing families to have coaching input, and providing greater attention to scheduling, league expectations, and instrumental support.

The relationship between perception of family social climate and typologies of home use was investigated. 105 college students completed the Family Environment Scale and a shortened version of a home use questionnaire developed by Altman, Nelson, and Lett. The latter was used to isolate empirically two styles of home use identified by Altman, et al. Two of three hypotheses regarding differences in subscale scores for these two family types were supported. Members of families who were most open, sharing, and interactive had lower scores on the Independence and Control subscales. The findings show that perceptions of family social climate have behavioral correlates in the way home settings are used by family members.
