The present research work investigates the effect of modified halloysite nanotubes (mHNTs) on the mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and polyetherimide (PEI). The developed PEEK/PEI blend matrix with 1 wt% of mHNTs shows a significant enhancement in mechanical properties like tensile, flexural, hardness, and impact. The developed blend matrix of PEEK/PEI matrix with mHNTs shows a significant enhancement of 25% in storage modulus (E′) and 13°C in glass transition temperature (Tg). In addition, an appreciable improvement of 26°C observed in maximum degradation temperature (Tmax). The effectiveness of the dispersion of mHNTs in the PEEK/PEI blend matrix was investigated by using SEM and TEM micrographs. The micrographs revealed that the mHNTs are uniformly dispersed in the PEEK/PEI matrix. The possible interaction of HNTs with PEEK/PEI and mHNTs with PEEK/PEI matrix were analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).

The extreme heating environment during re-entry requires an efficient heat shield to protect a spacecraft. The current method of manufacturing a heat shield is labor intensive. The application of 3D printing can reduce cost and manufacturing time and improve the quality of a heat shield. A 3D printed carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composite was proposed as a heat shield material. The aim was to develop a heat shield and the structural member as a single structure while maintaining the necessary recession resistance. Test samples were exposed to thermal cycles and ultraviolet (UV) radiation environment. Subsequently, a tensile test was performed to evaluate the effect of thermal cycle and UV radiation on the mechanical properties. The sample’s recession performance and temperature behavior were evaluated using an arc heated wind tunnel. Exposure to thermal cycle and UV radiation have limited effect on the mechanical properties, recession behavior and temperature behavior of 3D CF/PEEK. Results from the arc heating test showed an expansion of the sample surface and better recession resistance than other existing ablator materials. Overall, 3D CF/PEEK has excellent recession resistance while maintaining mechanical properties when exposed to high temperature, thermal cycle and UV radiation.

Two series of 10% polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/polyether ether ketone (PEEK) composites reinforced with potassium titanate whisker (PTW/PTFE/PEEK) and chopped glass fiber (GF/PTFE/PEEK) were prepared and characterized. We investigated the effects of the additives on thermal stability, tribological properties, mechanical properties, and rheological behavior. The results illustrated that the mechanical properties of 10% PTFE/PEEK blend can be dramatically improved by incorporating either PTW or GF; however, the reinforcing effect of GF was found to be superior. It was found that 1% additive resulted in blends with the best tribological properties. Compared to the unmodified blend, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the 1% PTW blend decreased by 7.2% and 21%, respectively, while the corresponding values of 1% GF blend decreased by 0.66% and 51%, respectively.

This work investigated the effect of montmorillonite clay surface modified with 25-30 wt% trimethyl stearyl ammonium (clay) on mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of polyoxymethylene (POM)/clay nanocomposites were investigated. The results showed that POM/clay nanocomposites could maintain or decrease their tensile strength for a certain clay loading range. The Young’s modulus of the nanocomposites increased by adding clay in a range of 0.5-4 wt% while the impact strength showed an increase in a range of 0.5-2 wt%. The percent strain at break of the nanocomposites decreased with increasing filler content. The thermal degradation temperature decreased with an increase of clay content thus the addition of clay did not improve the thermal stability of POM. The microstructure of neat POM and POM/clay nanocomposites was observed that the dispersion of clay was a good in POM matrix at low clay content. The nanocomposites formed the intercalated structure with clay, and the intercalated clay stacks were distributed uniformly in the nanocomposite. The increase of clay content observed increasing of brittleness in POM/clay nanocomposites.

ABSTRACTIn order to improve the dispersibility of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) in polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), the modification of HNT surfaces was studied with three types of modifiers (polymethyl methacrylate [PMMA], sodium dodecyl sulfate [SDS] and carboxylic acid). The modified HNTs were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle measurements. The HNTs were used to reinforce the mechanical properties of PTFE. The mechanical results indicated that the tensile strength of the modified HNT-filled PTFE nanocomposites (F-HNT/PTFE) improved to an acceptable degree and Young's modulus increased significantly. The tribological results showed that the wear rate of F-HNT/PTFE decreased by 21–82 and 9–40 times compared to pure PTFE and the pristine F-HNT/PTFE, respectively.

This work deals with studying the mechanical properties specially fatigue behavior for high performance composite materials of poly ether ether ketone (PEEK)/glass fiber, which are used in Aircraft Industry. Two materials have been used: (PEEK natural) and (PEEK+30% glass fiber). To identify the type of (PEEK), infrared (FTIR) test has been conducted. X-ray test has been used to measure the (PEEK) crystalline ,also the tensile properties, impact strength and the fatigue test are performed. The results show that FTIR test peaks are for standard PEEK polymer and that GFRP increases the crystalline of (PEEK) material , while the tensile , impact and fatigue properties of (PEEK) decreases by adding GF to PEEK .

AbstractThis paper describes the preparation of Epoxy/Urethane (EP/PU) graft interpenetrating polymer networks (g-IPNs) and investigates the effect of EP/PU weight ratio and urethane's prepolymer molecular weight on the mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of the IPN system. Here, g-IPN was prepared by thorough mixing of an isocyanate-terminated urethane prepolymer with an epoxy resin followed by simultaneous curing of the resins. Polytetra hydrofuranate (PTHF), molecular weights (Mw) 1000, 2000 and 3000 g/gmol, was used to prepare urethane prepolymers. EP/PU weight ratios were 75/25, 50/50, 30/70 and 15/85. Disappearance of epoxide and isocyanate functional groups was followed by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), showing curing of the resins. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was used to investigate the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the IPNs. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA), tensile measurements and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to study thermal, mechanical and morphological properties of the prepared systems. The best mechanical properties were obtained at EP/PU weight ratio 75/25 which also shows a fine and uniformly dispersed morphology. Moreover, at this ratio, with increasing PTHF Mw in the urethane prepolymer, the mechanical properties were improved whereas a decrease was observed in Tg and thermal degradation temperature of g-IPNs.
