Technique Sensitivity: Biological Factors Contributing to Clinical Success with Various Restorative Materials

Since the 1950s, clinicians have relied on various formulations of Ca(OH)2 to stimulate dentin bridge formation. Various studies (Kozlov and Massler, 1966; Massler, 1967; Brannstrom, 1978; Cox et al., 1987; Snuggs et al., 1993) have demonstrated that pulp healing and dentin bridging can occur against a pH spectrum of materials. Recent studies (Akimoto et al., 1998; Cox et al., 1998, 1999; Tarim et al., 1998; Kitasako et al., 1999; Hafez et al., 2000) have reported successful pulp healing and dentin bridging using adhesives for direct capping of exposed pulps. However, others (Costa et al., 1997; Stanley and Pameijer, 1997; Pameijer, 1998; Hebling et al., 1999; Carvalho et al., 2000) have reported unsatisfactory results when exposures were direct-capped with adhesives. Biological and technical factors, or a combination of both, might be postulated to explain these differences. Recent studies have demonstrated that biological success is dependent upon proper hemorrhage control at the exposure site. This review explores the differences and common factors influencing successful dentin bridging, focusing on data derived from animal studies conducted according to ISO usage guidelines for cavity preparation and material placement. In the past, there has been concern that etching of vital dentin leads to immediate pulp death due to low pH. Recent studies have reported that acidic cements cause breakdown of only the smear layer and fail to seal the restoration interface, leading to inflammation and necrosis. A properly hybridized dentin-adhesive interface provides a "bacteriometic" seal to both dentin and pulp tissues. Recent ISO usage studies have shown a high incidence of dentin bridging with adhesives following proper hemorrhage control and removal of both operative debris and biofilm at the dentin-pulp interface by agents such as NaOCl. These are important technique-sensitivity factors to be considered for pulp healing and dentin bridge formation.

AbstractEvasion of immune recognition is a hallmark of cancer that facilitates tumorigenesis, maintenance, and progression. Systemic immune activation can incite tumor recognition and stimulate potent antitumor responses. While the concept of antitumor immunity is not new, there is renewed interest in tumor immunology given the clinical success of immune modulators in a wide range of cancer subtypes over the past decade. One particularly interesting, yet exceedingly rare phenomenon, is the abscopal response, characterized by a potent systemic antitumor response following localized tumor irradiation presumably attributed to reactivation of antitumor immunity.

The application of perfluorocarbon liquids has been well acclaimed in vitreoretinal surgery. Its unique physical properties make it an ideal intraoperative tool to improve the efficiency and safety of surgical procedures in complicated cases. The main functions of perfluorocarbon liquids in vitreoretinal surgery include relocating and fixing the detached retina, displacing the subretinal and subchoroidal to fluid anteriorly, revealing proliferative vitreous retinopathy (PVR) for further maneuvers, protecting the macula from exposure to chemicals with potential toxicity, and assisting the removal of foreign body. The related clinical applications include retinal detachment with severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant tear, diabetic retinopathy (DR), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and posterior dislocated crystalline and intraocular lenses. The application of perfluorocarbon liquids has been expended over the past fewer years. Several PFCLs related ocular inflammations have been observed inin vitrostudies, animal studies, and clinical follow-up. The complete removal of PFCLs is recommended at the end of the surgery in most cases.

Programmed cell death (PCD) is a process intended for the maintenance of cellular homeostasis by eliminating old, damaged, or unwanted cells. In plants, PCD takes place during developmental processes and in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. In contrast to the field of animal studies, PCD is not well understood in plants. Calcium (Ca2+) is a universal cell signaling entity and regulates numerous physiological activities across all the kingdoms of life. The cytosolic increase in Ca2+ is a prerequisite for the induction of PCD in plants. Although over the past years, we have witnessed significant progress in understanding the role of Ca2+ in the regulation of PCD, it is still unclear how the upstream stress perception leads to the Ca2+ elevation and how the signal is further propagated to result in the onset of PCD. In this review article, we discuss recent advancements in the field, and compare the role of Ca2+ signaling in PCD in biotic and abiotic stresses. Moreover, we discuss the upstream and downstream components of Ca2+ signaling and its crosstalk with other signaling pathways in PCD. The review is expected to provide new insights into the role of Ca2+ signaling in PCD and to identify gaps for future research efforts.

To the Editor.— The distressingly high incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in today's very low birth weight premature infant population and the prolonged morbidity and tumultuous clinical problems associated with BPD in these tiny infants have led to a trial usage of dexamethasone treatment to try to assuage these problems in this patient population. The report of Kazzi et al1 is noteworthy because the authors not only indicate in clear fashion the failure of relatively prolonged dexamethasone treatment to ameliorate the hospital course of infants with BPD (in a randomized prospective double-blind study), but they also clearly identify potential risk factors associated with dexamethasone treatment that are of concern to them as clinical investigators, risk factors based both on clinical and experimental animal studies.

Over the past two decades, there has been a growing interest in developing predictive models of animal movement and force generation in fluids. In a departure from past studies that have asked how prescribed motions of a propulsor (wing or fin) generate lift and thrust during swimming and flying, we are increasingly interested in predicting the propulsor's movement as well as the forces generated by it. This interest, motivated by a need to understand the control and dynamics of locomotion and its applications to robotics and animal physiology, requires that we develop integrative models and analyses of swimming and flying that incorporate neural control and muscle physiology into more traditional biomechanical studies of locomotion in fluids. This approach extends from whole-animal studies to the molecular basis of force generation. In this paper, we explore mechanical tuning from the level of the whole animal to the proteins driving force generation in muscle.

      Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania often tend to be grouped together under the label of ’the Baltic countries’, yet they constitute a region characterised by a diversity which also manifests itself in the field of academic research. Still, it may be possible to detect some common elements in the ecocriticism-related activities that have been taking place in these states during the past couple of decades. The article maps the salient tendencies in the environmental humanities (including ecocriticism) of the region that recently gained an institutionalised platform in the form of the Baltic Conferences on the Environmental Humanities and Social Sciences (BALTEHUMS) that were started in 2018. A survey is given of the three countries’ most significant events and publications that have boasted an ecocritical component, ecocriticism’s institutional representation and inclusion of ecocritical issues in university syllabuses and theory textbooks, as well as some pertinent topics and sub-fields on which the scholars in these countries are currently working. Among these, various aspects of the connections of literature and the ecosystems of the forest (trees) and the mire can be noticed; while also animal studies, literary urban studies, bio- and ecosemiotics and environmental history appear to have entered a fruitful dialogue with ecocritical scholarship currently conducted in the Baltics.

Life on earth has evolved during the past several billion years under relatively bright days and dark night conditions. The wide-spread adoption of electric lights during the past century exposed animals, both human and non-human, to significant light at night for the first time in their evolutionary history. Endogenous circadian clocks depend on light to entrain to the external daily environment and seasonal rhythms depend on clear nightly melatonin signals to assess time of year. Thus, light at night can derange temporal adaptations. Indeed, disruption of naturally evolved light–dark cycles results in several physiological and behavioural changes with potentially serious implications for physiology, behaviour and mood. In this review, data from night-shift workers on their elevated risk for metabolic disorders, as well as data from animal studies will be discussed. Night-shift workers are predisposed to obesity and dysregulated metabolism that may result from disrupted circadian rhythms. Although studies in human subjects are correlative, animal studies have revealed several mechanisms through which light at night may exert its effects on metabolism by disrupting circadian rhythms that are associated with inflammation, both in the brain and in the periphery. Disruption of the typical timing of food intake is a key effect of light at night and subsequent metabolic dysregulation. Strategies to avoid the effects of light at night on body mass dysregulation should be pursued.

Abstract: Nowadays, it is almost naturally taken among dentists that seemed unimaginable a few decades ago, namely that an inorganic material (titanium) inserted in an organic environment (bone) can be integrated and become a permanent pillar of prosthetics. Bone integration – meaning a structural and functional connection between the implant and the bone – itself was discovered and described in the late 1960s. This provides the basis of dental implantology. In those days, the conditions affecting the positive or negative course of bone integration have been formulated. This process is investigated at the level of basic research and rarely mentioned in the daily clinical practice. The material, form, and surface of the implant all contribute to success if we design well and apply the correct surgical technique. Our goal is to present the changes that have taken place over the past decades, which have resulted in an increasingly perfect integration and clinical success of implants. The human egocentric perception of approaching objects and the related perceptual processes have been of interest to researchers for several decades. This article gives a literature review on numerous studies that investigated the phenomenon when an object approaches an observer (or the other way around) with the goal to single out factors that influence the perceptual process. A taxonomy of metrics is followed by a breakdown of different experimental measurement methods. Thereinafter, potential factors affecting the judgment of approaching objects are compiled and debated while divided into human factors (e.g., gender, age, and driving experience), compositional factors (e.g., approaching velocity, spatial distance, and observation time), and technical factors (e.g., field of view, stereoscopy, and display contrast). Experimental findings are collated, juxtaposed, and critically discussed. With virtual-reality devices having taken a tremendous developmental leap forward in the past few years, they have been able to gain ground in experimental research. Therefore, special attention in this article is also given to the perception of approaching objects in virtual environments and put in contrast to the perception in reality.
