The microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-pressed alumina (Al2O3) matrix composites containing 20, 35, or 50 vol% of nickel aluminide (NiAl) were investigated. The mean Al2O3 grain size was found to decrease from approximately 2.0 μm (monolithic Al2O3) to 1.0 μm for the composite containing 50 vol% NiAl. Composite flexural strength values were lower than both the monolithic Al2O3 and NiAl and attributed to the weakly bonded NiAl particles acting as flaw origins. In contrast to this, the fracture toughness increased with NiAl volume fraction to a maximum of 4.90 MPa·m1/2, thus confirming the toughening effect of NiAl addition on Al2O3 ceramics, with the slope of the rising R-curve for the composite being approximately 8 times that of monolithic Al2O3.

ABSTRACTThe present study aimed to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum matrix composites reinforced with high volume fraction of Si3N4 fabricated by the pressure casting technique, with variations in the composition of matrix alloy and microstructure of preforms. Characterization was carried out by a combination of metallography, flexural and load-controlled fatigue tests to study the flexural strength, fracture toughness and fatigue behavior in the composites. The findings indicated that increasing matrix strength resulted in an increase in flexural strength and fatigue resistance of composites. The fracture toughness of composites increased with the volume fraction of infiltrated tough Al phase. The CIP pressure exerted a significant effect on mechanical properties of composites. The improvement in mechanical properties of composites is associated with the load transfer effect from matrix to the stiffer reinforcement.

Ternary ZrC-SiC-ZrB2 ceramic composites were prepared by hot pressing at 1900 °C for 60 min under a pressure of 30 MPa in argon. The influence of ZrB2 content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ZrC-SiC-ZrB2 composites was investigated. Examination of SEM showed that the microstructure of the composites consisted of the equiaxed ZrB2, ZrC and SiC grains, and there was a slight tendency of reduction for grain size in ZrC with increasing ZrB2 content. The hardness increased considerably from 23.3 GPa for the ZS material to 26.4 GPa for the ZS20B material. Flexural strength was a strong function of ZrB2 content, increasing from 407 MPa without ZrB2 addition to 627 MPa when the ZrB2 content was 20vol.%. However, the addition of ZrB2 has little influence on the fracture toughness, ranging between 5.5 and 5.7 MPam1/2.

TiB2-(W,Ti)C composites with (Ni,Mo) as sintering additive have been fabricated by hot-pressing technique, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites have been investigated. (Ni,Mo) promotes grain growth of the composites. In the case of 7vol.% (Ni,Mo), the grain size decreases consistently with an increase in the content of (W,Ti)C. When the proper content of (W,Ti)C is added to TiB2 composites, the growth of matrix grains is inhibited and the mechanical properties of the composites are improved. The best mechanical properties of the composites are 1084.13MPa for three-point flexural strength, 7.80MPa•m 1/2 for fracture toughness and 17.92GPa for Vickers hardness.

Hydroxyapatite is a very attractive material for artificial implants and human tissue restorations because they accelerate bone growth around the implant. The hydroxyapatite nanocomposites (HAp/TiO2) were produced by using high energy ball milling. X-ray diffraction studies revealed the formation of HAp and TiO2 composites. Cubic-like crystals with boundary morphologies were observed; it was also found that the grain size gradually increased with the increase in TiO2 content. It was found that the mechanical properties (hardness, Young's modulus, fracture toughness, flexural strength, and compression strength)of the composites significantly improved with the addition of TiO2, which was sintered at 1200℃. These properties were then also correlated with the microstructure of the composites. This paper investigates the effect of titania (TiO2 = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt%) addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) nanocomposites.

VC/Fe-based composite samples were fabricated with different volume fraction of VC in vacuum, and the content are 40%, 55%, and 70% respectively. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties for VC/Fe based composite with various VC content were studied. The results indicated VC content had a significant effect on the performance and organization of the VC/Fe-based composites and the effect of VC content on the mechanical properties are varied. With ratio of VC powders increased, the volume fraction of V8C7 particles formed additionally, while the fraction of Fe particles slightly decreased. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, relative density and wear resistant increased with increase of VC content in the range of 0 to 55vol. %, and then decreased with further increase of VC content, while the Vickers hardness increased with the increase of VC content. By comparing the material with 55vol.%VC would show the best combination of properties in the prepared samples.

In this work, a (SiC-AlN)/ZrB2 composite with outstanding mechanical properties was prepared by using polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) and hot-pressing technique. Flexural strength reached up to 460 ± 41 MPa, while AlN and ZrB2 contents were 10 wt%, and 15 wt%, respectively, under a hot-pressing temperature of 2000 °C. XRD pattern-evidenced SiC generated by pyrolysis of polycarbosilane (PCS) was mainly composed by 2H-SiC and 4H-SiC, both belonging to α-SiC. Micron-level ZrB2 secondary phase was observed inside the (SiC-AlN)/ZrB2 composite, while the mean grain size (MGS) of SiC-AlN matrix was approximately 97 nm. This unique nano-micron hybrid microstructure enhanced the mechanical properties. The present investigation provided a feasible tactic for strengthening ceramics from PDCs raw materials.

Silicon nitride ceramics were prepared by gas pressure sintering (GPS) with different sintering additives, including La2O3, Sm2O3 and Al2O3. Effect of sintering additives on the phase-transformation, microstructure and mechanical properties of porous silicon nitride ceramics was investigated. The results show that the reaction of sintering additives each other and with SiO2 had key effects on the phase-transformation, grain growing and grain boundaries. With 9MPa N2 atmosphere pressure, holding 1h at 1850°C, adding 10wt% one of the La2O3, Sm2O3, Al2O3, porous silicon nitride was prepared and the relative density was 78%, 72%, 85% respectively. The flexural strength was less than 500MPa, and the fracture toughness was less than 4.8MPam1/2. Dropping compounds sintering additives, such as La2O3+Al2O3, Sm2O3+Al2O3 effectively improves the sintering and mechanical properties. The relative density was 99.2% and 98.7% with 10wt% compounds sintering additives. The grain ratio of length to diameter was up to 1:8. The flexural strength was more than 900MPa, and the fracture toughness was more than 8.9MPam1/2.

Cyclic channel die compression (CCDC) of AZ31-1.7 wt.% Si alloy was performed up to 5 passes at 623 K in order to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of compressed alloys. The results show that multi-pass CCDC is very effective to refine the matrix grain and Mg2Si phases. After the alloy is processed for 5 passes, the mean grain size decreases from 300 μm of as-cast to 8 μm. Both dendritic and Chinese script type Mg2Si phases break into small polygonal pieces and distribute uniformly in the matrix. The tensile strength increases prominently from 118 MPa to 216 MPa, whereas the hardness of alloy deformed 5 passes only increase by 8.4% compared with as-cast state.

Abstract Si3N4-based ceramic (Si3N4-5wt%Y2O3-3wt%MgO) was obtained from carbothermal-reduction-derived powder combined with gas pressure sintering. The phase, microstructure, thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of Si3N4 ceramics were comprehensively analyzed. Dense Si3N4 ceramic with uniform grain size was obtained after sintering at 1900°C for 7 h under a N2 pressure of 1.2 MPa. The secondary phase consisted of Y4Si2O7N2 and Y2Si3O3N4 was found to gather around triangular grain boundaries. The thermal conductivity, flexural strength, hardness and fracture toughness of the Si3N4 ceramics were 95.7 W·m-1·k-1, 715 MPa, 17.2 GPa and 7.2 MPa·m1/2, respectively. The results were compared with product derived from commercial powder, the improvement of thermal conductivity (~8.3%) and fracture toughness (~4.3%) demonstrating the superiority of Si3N4 ceramics prepared from carbothermal-reduction-derived powder.

The Al2O3/Ti(C,N) ceramic material added micron ZrO2 whisker and nano coated CaF2@Al(OH)3 powder was fabricated. The micron ZrO2 whisker was for the toughening and reinforcing phase and the nano coated CaF2@Al(OH)3 powder was the lubricant. For obtaining a ceramic material with optimal comprehensive mechanical properties and friction properties, the influences of different compositions of the ZrO2 whisker and nano coated CaF2@Al(OH)3 powder on the microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed, respectively. The result demonstrated that as the addition of the ZrO2 whisker was 6 vol% and the addition of the nano coated CaF2@Al(OH)3 powder was 10 vol%, the optimal self-lubricating ceramic material had optimal mechanical properties. The hardness of the ceramic material was 16.72 GPa, the flexural strength was 520 MPa and the fracture toughness reached 7.16 MPa·m1/2. The formation of the intragranular structure, whisker toughening and the phase transition of ZrO2 were the main mechanisms.
