The mechanical properties of rock-like materials always attract the interest of many researchers. In this paper, we study the influence of specimen cross-section shape on uniaxial compressive strength as well as their deformation, damage and failure characteristics by uniaxial compression tests. The diameter and height of circular cross-section specimens are 50 and 100 mm, respectively, and the height and cross-sectional area of other specimens are equal to that of circular cross-sectional ones. Simulation and experimental results show that the cross-sectional shape has little effect on uniaxial compressive strength. Moreover, the effect on other mechanical properties is also very limited before the peak strength, such as stress–strain curve, rotation and motion of particles, contact damage and energy evolution of particles; however, it gradually becomes obvious after the peak strength. This is a very important feature, which affects the macroscopic form of failure of specimens and reflects the difference between failure surfaces. The shapes of failure surfaces obtained from numerical simulations are quite similar to the experimental results, which verify the reliability of numerical simulation results. Finally, the achievements can serve as a reference for related engineering issues.

Through the uniaxial compression test, the mechanical properties of different placements of iron wire cement mortar, e.g. compressive strength and elastic modulus, were studied, and the mass ratios of cement, sands and water influencing the mechanical properties were put forward, which provided the experimental results for reference for the wide use of the iron wire cement mortar material. From the study it is gained that: (1) The best placement of the iron wires in cement mortar is horizontal. (2) The best mass ratio of the cement, sands and water is 1:4.70:0.81.

Because of its weak cementation and abundant pores and cracks, it is difficult to obtain suitable samples of tectonic coal to test its mechanical properties. Therefore, the research and development of coalbed methane drilling and mining technology are restricted. In this study, tectonic coal samples are remodeled with different particle sizes to test the mechanical parameters and loading resistivity. The research results show that the particle size and gradation of tectonic coal significantly impact its uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus and affect changes in resistivity. As the converted particle size increases, the uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus decrease first and then tend to remain unchanged. The strength of the single-particle gradation coal sample decreases from 0.867 to 0.433 MPa and the elastic modulus decreases from 59.28 to 41.63 MPa with increasing particle size. The change in resistivity of the coal sample increases with increasing particle size, and the degree of resistivity variation decreases during the coal sample failure stage. In composite-particle gradation, the proportion of fine particles in the tectonic coal sample increases from 33% to 80%. Its strength and elastic modulus increase from 0.996 to 1.31 MPa and 83.96 to 125.4 MPa, respectively, and the resistivity change degree decreases. The proportion of medium particles or coarse particles increases, and the sample strength, elastic modulus, and resistivity changes all decrease.

This paper presents a methodology for determining the uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength of heterogeneous material composed of dacite (D) and altered dacite (AD). A zone of gradual transition from altered dacite to dacite was observed in the rock mass. The mechanical properties of the rock material in that zone were determined by laboratory tests of composite samples that consisted of rock material discs. However, the functional dependence on the strength parameter alteration of the rock material (UCS, intact UCS of the rock material, and mi) with an increase in the participation of “weaker” rock material was determined based on the test results of uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength. The participation of altered dacite directly affects the mode and mechanism of failure during testing. Uniaxial compressive strength (σciUCS) and intact uniaxial compressive strength (σciTX) decrease exponentially with increased AD volumetric participation. The critical ratio at which the uniaxial compressive strength of the composite sample equals the strength of the uniform AD sample was at a percentage of 30% AD. Comparison of the obtained exponential equation with practical suggestions shows a good correspondence. The suggested methodology for determining heterogeneous rock mass strength parameters allows us to determine the influence of rock material heterogeneity on the values σciUCS, σciTX, and constant mi. Obtained σciTX and constant mi dependences define more reliable rock material strength parameter values, which can be used, along with rock mass classification systems, as a basis for assessing rock mass parameters. Therefore, it is possible to predict the strength parameters of the heterogeneous rock mass at the transition of hard (D) and weak rock (AD) based on all calculated strength parameters for different participation of AD.

Based on equivalent transformation by means of mathematically rigorous analytics, the stress analysis of heavy cross-sectional, non-homogeneous Functionally Graded Composites (FGCs) has been performed by the layering calculation model in axis-symmetrical mechanics problems. The partially calculated results of the non-homogeneous layered thick-walled metal tube are similar to the design and practice of machine forging moulds manufactured with special welding electrodes developed by the German Capilla Company. The analysis is used complementary to the investigation of the quantitative analysis of thermo-mechanical properties, or the so-called anti-design and the optimization of the graded structure for FGCs.

Attempt to increase the mechanical properties of porous bioceramics, a dense/porous structured β-TCP bioceramics that mimic the characteristics of nature bone were fabricated. Experimental results show that the dense/porous structured β-TCP bioceramics demonstrated excellent mechanical properties with compressive strength up to 74 MPa and elastic modulus up to 960 MPa, which could be tailored by the dense/porous cross-sectional area ratio obeying the rule of exponential growth. The interface between the dense and porous bioceramics is connected compactly and tightly with some micropores distributed in the matrix of both porous and dense counterparts. The dense/porous structure of β-TCP bioceramics may provide an effective way to increase the mechanical properties of porous bioceramics for bone regeneration at weight bearing sites.

This paper discusses the experimental results on the mechanical properties of hybrid fibre reinforced composite concrete (HyFRCC) containing different proportions of steel fibre (SF) and polypropylene fibre (PPF). The mechanical properties include compressive strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength. SF is known to enhance the flexural and tensile strengths, and at the same time is able to resist the formation of macro cracking. Meanwhile, PPF contributes to the tensile strain capacity and compressive strength, and also delay the formation of micro cracks. Hooked-end deformed type SF fibre with 60 mm length and fibrillated virgin type PPF fibre with 19 mm length are used in this study. Meanwhile, the concrete strength is maintained for grade C30. The percentage proportion of SF-PPF fibres are varied in the range of 100-0%, 75-25%, 50-50%, 25-75% and 0-100% of which the total fibre volume fraction (Vf) is fixed at 0.5%. The experimental results reveal that the percentage proportion of SF-PPF fibres with 75-25% produced the maximum performance of flexural strength, tensile strength and flexural toughness. Meanwhile, the percentage proportion of SF-PPF fibres with 100-0% contributes to the improvement of the compressive strength compared to that of plain concrete.

Abstract In this work, the phase composition (relative fractions of monoclinic m-ZrO2, tetragonal t-ZrO2, and cubic c-ZrO2 phases) and mechanical properties (hardness, fracture toughness, compressive strength) of alumina toughened zirconia (ATZ) ceramics, with an addition of silica were investigated. Calcium oxide was used as a stabilizer for the zirconia tetragonal phase. It was shown that CaO-ATZ+SiO2 ceramics demonstrate increased resistance to low-temperature degradation. The plasticity signs at room temperature were found due to the SiO2 addition to CaO-ATZ ceramics. A yield plateau appears in the uniaxial compression diagram at 5 mol. % SiO2 concentration. It is hypothesized that discovered plasticity is due to the increased t→m transformability.

Two kinds of glass fibers with round (RdGF) and rectangle cross-sections (RcGF) were used to reinforce polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), respectively. In this way, the effect of fiber cross-section shape on rheological and mechanical properties of the composites was studied for the first time. Results showed that the viscosity of the composites reinforced with RcGF was much lower than that of RdGF composites, owing to their higher sensitivity to flow. As a result, PPS/RcGF composites could be injection-molded at high fiber contents. Moreover, RcGF showed a better reinforcing effect on mechanical properties of PPS. So the use of RcGF could better balance the contradiction between processability and reinforcing effect for glass fiber-reinforced composites. Various characterizations were carried out to reveal the reinforcing mechanism. This work demonstrated the importance of fiber cross-section shape on design and production of fiber-reinforced composites.

Experimental tests were conducted to study the influence of natural cooling and water cooling on the physical and mechanical properties of quartz sandstone. This study aims to understand the effect of different cooling methods on the physical and mechanical properties of quartz sandstone (such as mass, volume, density, P-wave velocity, elastic modulus, uniaxial compressive strength, etc.). The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and elastic modulus(E) of the specimens cooled by natural-cooling and water-cooling decrease with heating temperature. At 800℃, after natural cooling and water cooling, the average value of UCS decreased by 34.65% and 57.90%, and the average value of E decreased by 87.66% and 89.05%, respectively. Meanwhile, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were used to capture the development of microcracks and pores within the specimens after natural-cooling and water-cooling, and it was found that at the same temperature, water cooling treatment was more likely to cause microcracks and pores, which can cause more serious damage to the quartz sandstone. These results confirm that different cooling methods have different effects on the physical and mechanical properties of quartz sandstone, and provide a basis for the stability prediction of rock mass engineering such as tunnel suffering from fire.

We investigated the mechanical properties of <100>-oriented square cross-sectional silicon nanowires under tension and compression, with a focus on the effect of side surface orientation. Two types of silicon nanowires (i.e., nanowires with four {100} side surfaces and those with four {110} side surfaces) were simulated by molecular dynamics simulations at a temperature of 300 K. The deformation mechanism exhibited no dependence on the side surface orientation, while the tensile strength and compressive strength did. Brittle cleavage was observed under tension, whereas dislocation nucleation was witnessed under compression. Silicon nanowires with {100} side surfaces had a lower tensile strength but higher compressive strength. The effect of side surface orientation became stronger as the nanowire width decreased. The obtained results may provide some insight into the design of silicon-based nano-devices.
