This study aimed to explore the experiences of adolescents from Singapore, aged 10–18 years old, living with cancer and their perceptions on how their psychosocial outcomes can be improved. A descriptive qualitative study design was used. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 10 participants from a pediatric oncology ward in a Singapore hospital. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Five major themes emerged: (1) experience of physical symptoms, (2) emotional response to their condition, (3) changes in social dynamics, and (4) falling behind in academics. The psychosocial outcomes of Singaporean adolescents with cancer could be improved by thorough pain assessments and creating a more conducive hospital environment.

Background: With a continued crisis of increasing workload and reduced workforce in General Practice, supporting resilience is a key strategy for sustaining the profession for the future. Aim: How do GPs perceive professional resilience and what workplace factors influence it? Design and setting: A UK based qualitative study of the perspectives of GPs currently practicing in the UK with least five years’ experience after completion of GP training. Method: Participants were recruited using convenience sampling, including social media forums and underwent semi-structured interviews (n = 27). Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Participants offered definitions of and influences on resilience which largely fit with existing research but in addition may result in GPs being perceived as obstructive, or that resilience may be a ‘surface act’. GPs agree that the current focus on methods of improving resilience does help support them but there is significantly more to be done in this field. Social media activity aiming at GP support may be counterproductive. Reduction of clinical working hours is a common strategy to improve resilience. Conclusion: That GPs feel to improve resilience they need to work fewer clinical hours may have huge implications for a workforce already in crisis; and ultimately for the healthcare of the UK population. Urgent research is needed to formulate a bespoke assessment for measuring GP resilience to assess potential interventions and identify GPs at risk of mental ill-health or leaving the profession.

Objective: To identify concepts and constructs important to parents of children with Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS). Design: Qualitative study. Setting: All children received some care at a tertiary hospital with additional care at outside facilities. Interviews were conducted in nonclinical locations, including remote locations. Participants: Parents of children <5 years old with a diagnosis of PRS. Prior treatments included observation, positioning, nasal trumpet, mandibular distraction osteogenesis, tracheostomy, and gastrostomy. Intervention: Semi-structured interviews with individuals (4) and with groups (focus groups, 4) were conducted using open-ended questions and non-leading prompts. Transcripts were analyzed with iterative open and axial coding. Concepts and constructs were identified and refined into codes and central themes. Interviews were conducted until thematic saturation was achieved. Results: Sixteen parents were interviewed. Their experiences were coded into 5 main themes, which can be summarized as: (1) child’s symptoms/well-being, (2) parents’ grief/isolation, (3) family stress, (4) relationships with providers, and (5) psychological and technical growth. Difficulty with feeding, weight gain, and breathing problems were core physical issues described by participants with associated intense fear. Participants described frustration from not only lack of care coordination, slow diagnoses, and poor communication but also gratitude for providers who served as advocates. Participants described gradual development of knowledge/competencies. Conclusions: Families of children with PRS have experiences that profoundly affect their lives. Child’s physical symptoms/well-being and parents’ psychosocial well-being provide content for a future PRS-specific quality-of-life instrument. Concepts that emerged also provide a framework to improve parents’ experience and enhance their children’s quality of care.

Abstract Background Persistent physical symptoms (PPS) are estimated to be present in 17% of patients in general practice. Hence, general practitioners (GPs) play a key role in both the diagnostic assessment and the management of PPS. However, research indicates a need to improve their strategies to support self-help in patients, and eHealth tools may serve as an opportunity. This study aimed to explore patients’ and GPs’ needs related to self-management of PPS. The study was designed to inform the future development of eHealth interventions in this field. Methods This qualitative study was based on 20 semi-structured interviews (6 GPs and 14 patients with PPS). Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim and analysed through a five-step thematic analysis approach. First, we conducted an inductive analysis to identify and explore emerging subthemes. Second, using a deductive mapping strategy, we categorised the derived subthemes according to the COM-B behaviour change model and its three domains: capability, opportunity and motivation. Results We identified eleven subthemes in the patient interviews and seven subthemes in the GP interviews. Several unmet needs emerged. First, we identified a need to consider PPS early in the illness trajectory by taking a bio-psycho-social approach. Second, both patients and GPs need better skills to manage uncertainty. Third, hope is important for the patients. Fourth, patients need guidance from their GP in how to self-manage their PPS. Conclusions This study provides important insight into key issues and needs related to capability, opportunity and motivation that should be addressed in the design of future eHealth self-management interventions targeting patients with PPS in general practice in order to support and improve care.

Although brainstorming strategy is not a new concept, the practice is relatively new in the Arab region, especially, in Jordan, where the old approaches are still widely used. This qualitative study examined the attitudes of Arabic language lecturers at Language Center, University of Jordan towards utilizing brainstorming in their instruction. With the help of convenience sampling, ten lecturers were selected to participate in the study. To reach a clear understanding of this issue, the study utilized a qualitative design and semi-structured interviews and observations were used as a tool to collect the data. The findings revealed that the attitudes and the actual use of brainstorming strategy by ASOL lecturers in their instruction were generally positive. A key recommendation of the study is that further research needs to be conducted into the reasons why some instructors opt not to use brainstorming strategy in their instruction.

Objectives: Cancer affects both patients and their families. Sometimes, the effects of cancer on families are greater than its effects on patients. Family caregivers play significant roles in car for patients with cancer. Nonetheless, the data on the challenges they face in caregiving are limited. The present study explored the perspectives of patients with gastric cancer (GC), their family caregivers, and healthcare providers regarding family caregivers’ challenges in caregiving to patients with GC. Materials and Methods: This descriptive exploratory qualitative study was conducted in 2019–2020. Six GC patients, six family caregivers, three physicians, and five nurses took part for a total of twenty participants. Purposive sampling was performed, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews and continued up to data saturation. Conventional content analysis was used for data analysis. Results: Caregivers’ challenges in caregiving to patients with GC were grouped into five main categories, namely, lengthy process of GC diagnosis, delivery of bad news, management of physical symptoms, altered relationships, and psychological consequences, and 14 subcategories. Conclusion: Educating the public about the primary symptoms of GC and the importance of timely seeking medical care as well as using culturally appropriate protocols for delivering bad news is recommended. Empowering family caregivers for the effective management of GC symptoms and caregiving-related challenges are also recommended to reduce their caregiver burden.
