Prevention Effect of News Shocks in Anti-Doping Policies

This paper contributes to the debate on anti-doping policies not by evaluating the policy itself but by evaluating the announcement of (new) policy measures. We develop a dynamic model for analyzing the effects of two different types of news shocks: (1) the preannouncement of improved drug testing technological opportunities and (2) the preannouncement of future increases in financial sanctions. We find that the anticipation of policy changes affects the behavior of potentially delinquent athletes. In both scenarios, our simulations show immediately reduced drug abuse among athletes. We conclude that authorities may consider news shocks as an anti-doping strategy.

This article argues the following five claims: 1. Plato’s description of the origins of cosmos in the Timaeus is not a myth, nor something unlikely: when he called it an eikos mythos or eikos logos, he meant a likely or trustworthy account on this very subject. 2. Among the details in this account, the following are prominent and surprising: a) the world was fashioned in time, in that precise point that was the beginning of time; b) several kinds of duration can be distinguished in cosmology (mainly eternity, sempiternity, perpetuity and time); and c) space is an entity characterized by movement and tension. 3. In the Statesman, Plato repeats much the same thing, adding this time the strange notion that the universe’s circular movement is periodically reversed. 4. In spite of the important differences in detail, there is a striking similarity between Plato’s account of the origins of the world and the explanation adopted by much of modern cosmology. 5. What Plato shares with so many instances of recent thought is here termed “cosmological imaginativity”. A first section of the paper deals exclusively with the Timaeus. Claims 1 and 2a are supported by a revision of the meanings of mythos and logos, followed by brief reference and discussion of the argument at Timaeus 27d, leading to the conclusion that Plato affirms that the ever-changing world has indeed had a beginning in time. Claim 2b describes five different types of duration, corresponding to Forms, the Demiurge, Space, the [empirical] world and its contents, physical objects. The second section is concerned with the myth in the Statesman, discussing it as a parallel and describing its peculiar turn to the Timaeus’ cosmology and cosmogony, a complex spheric and dynamic model. After digressing into some important ideas in modern cosmology, touching especially on affinities of some of Einstein’s ideas with of Plato’s own, the paper closes with a discussion of cosmological imaginativity, oriented to recover and recognize fully Plato’s greatness as a cosmologist.

Cardiac tissue engineering aims at creating contractile structures that can optimally reproduce the features of human cardiac tissue. These constructs are becoming valuable tools to model some of the cardiac functions, to set preclinical platforms for drug testing, or to alternatively be used as therapies for cardiac repair approaches. Most of the recent developments in cardiac tissue engineering have been made possible by important advances regarding the efficient generation of cardiac cells from pluripotent stem cells and the use of novel biomaterials and microfabrication methods. Different combinations of cells, biomaterials, scaffolds, and geometries are however possible, which results in different types of structures with gradual complexities and abilities to mimic the native cardiac tissue. Here, we intend to cover key aspects of tissue engineering applied to cardiology and the consequent development of cardiac organoids. This review presents various facets of the construction of human cardiac 3D constructs, from the choice of the components to their patterning, the final geometry of generated tissues, and the subsequent readouts and applications to model and treat cardiac diseases.

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that hits Indonesia makes leading Indonesian government take policy measures by launching regulations in implementation procedures within government agencies. LIPI issued a circular to promote Increasing Awareness and Prevention of Spreading of COVID-19 Infection within LIPI’s offices environment. The LIPI Scientific Documentation and Data Center (PDDI) received this mandate to carry out and regulate the policy for carrying out official duties at home (WFH). This paper aims to describe the implementation of the policy of carrying out official duties at home (WFH) for librarians in the PDDI LIPI. Implementation of this policy shows that as an implementing institution unit, PDDI follows up on the policy by issuing work from home assignments with provisions that refer to the circular of the head of LIPI. The target group in this policy is librarians in LIPI. This paper applies descriptive writing with quantitative data approach. The results of this study indicate that principally, the objectives of this policy have been achieved. The target group optimally carries out official duties at home. The survei shows that the target group has implemented the policy in accordance with the direction of LIPI Chairman. The communication pattern and interaction between the policy implementer and the elements implementing the policy are relatively good, so that the policy can be implemented as expected. Communication media is very flexible and not rigid, information related to policies, policy changes are conveyed through the WhatsApp group communication channel so that librarians can immediately receive the policy information. In this policy implementation model, the implementing organization minimizes the factors that make this policy not properly implemented, namely by arranging picket schedules, providing official vehicles for those who do not have private vehicles and lending work facilities to be brought home.

This paper presents a general dynamic model that describes the two-dimensional grasp by two robotic fingers with soft fingertips. We derive the system's kinematics and dynamics by incorporating rolling constraints that depend on the deformation and on the rolling distance characteristics of the fingertips' material. We analyze the grasp stability at equilibrium, and conclude that the rolling properties of the fingertips can play an important role in grasp stability, especially when the width of the grasped object is small compared to the radius of the tips. Subsequently, a controller, which is based on the fingertips' rolling properties, is proposed for stable grasping concurrent with object orientation control. We evaluate the dynamic model under the proposed control law by simulations and experiments that make use of two different types of soft fingertip materials, through which it is confirmed that the dynamic model can successfully capture the effect of the fingertips' deformation and their rolling distance characteristics. Finally, we use the dynamic model to demonstrate by simulations the significance of the fingertips' rolling properties in grasping thin objects.

This chapter discusses how the pharmaceutical industry’s actions affected the accomplishments of the Decade of Pain Control and Research, which began on January 1, 2001, following almost two decades of rising concern over the inadequate treatment of chronic pain in the United States. To tell the story of this decade we must describe the accompanying problem of drug diversion and abuse. The development in 1995 of a new opioid product called OxyContin, its aggressive marketing, the morbidity and mortality associated with its misuse, and the eventual felony conviction in 2007 of the drug’s sponsor for fraudulent claims and marketing practices, affected the Decade in unexpected ways. The response by Congress and the regulatory community to what they termed an “epidemic” of prescription drug abuse produced long-lasting policy changes. The chapter also touches on the peculiar and sometimes troubling relationship between the regulators and the regulated.

In this article we present the results of a simplified dynamic model for forest fires. We consider isotropic situations with different ignition mechanisms and different types of trees, models of crown and surface fires, and anisotropic cases that account for the influence of wind. We calculate the probabilities for a fire to become critical and characterize the temporal evolution and the spatial extent of the fire.

Keeping in view the political shifts in the wake of 9/11 incident, new social and political trends/concepts have emerged which affected the nations across the world particularly the Muslim world, wherein a wave of extremism and conservatism was seen to be set in. In consequence, Pakistan embarked upon to make reforms in the curriculum to avoid that wave. Accordingly, Musharraf government has adopted education reform under the banner of enlightened moderation and introduced curriculum to construct Pakistani nationalism in the context of liberal citizenship to curtail the issues like extremism and conservatism spread under the slogan of Islamization. This study pinpoints the overall impact of Musharraf policy changes upon curriculum and its role in the construction of liberal citizenship. This study uses secondary data in the shape of policy texts and curriculum of social studies. This study uses discourse analysis to analyse policy text and curriculum. The findings of the study have pointed out that the government has introduced modern contents such as life skills and scientific knowledge to tackle prevailing issues by removing biased and outdated contents from existing curricula. This study has recommended that effective policy measures to construct liberal citizenship should only be realized with effective implementation.

AbstractWe compare in a systematic way spectrometric, photometric and mid-infrared (VLTI/MIDI) interferometric measurements with different types of model atmospheres. Self-consistent dynamic model atmospheres in particular were used to interpret in a consistent way the dynamic behavior of gas and dust. The results underline how the joint use of different kind of observations, as photometry, spectroscopy and interferometry, is essential to understand the atmospheres of pulsating C-rich AGB stars. The sample of C-rich stars discussed in this work provides crucial constraints for the atmospheric structure.
