Abstract Background Mahanintangtong is listed in the Thailand’s National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). It is used to treat non-specific fevers and illnesses such as pharyngitis and chickenpox. In this study, we investigated the biological activities of the different medicinal plants used in the Mahanintangtong formula. Methods The plant materials were extracted by maceration and decoction. Antimicrobial activity, assessed by disc diffusion method, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were compared with commercially available standard antibiotics. To elucidate the anti-inflammatory mechanisms, inhibition of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) production was tested by Griess and ELISA techniques. Antioxidant activity was measured by ABTS and DPPH scavenging assays. Results The extracts with the best antimicrobial activities were carbonized Tectona grandis showing against Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The ethanol extract of Dracaena loureiroi wood exhibited the highest NO and IL-6 inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 9.42 ± 1.81 and 12.02 ± 0.30 μg/mL, respectively. The ethanol extract of Pogostemon cablin had the highest TNF-α inhibitory with IC50 values of 10.68 ± 0.02 μg/mL. In anti-free radical testing, the ethanol extract of D. loureiroi displayed high antioxidant activity by both ABTS and DPPH assays. Conclusion The ethanol extracts from carbonized T. grandis and Mahanintangtong showed good antimicrobial activity, especially against S. pyogenes, and good anti-inflammatory activity. These findings are relevant to the pathogenesis of pharyngitis and justify additional studies to see if Mahanintangtong could have clinical utility.

Medicinal plants have been used for countries as cures for human diseases because they contain components of therapeutic value. Among these medi-cinal plants, Ammi visnage which have an immense reservoir of potential compounds attributed to the secondary metabolites which have the advan-tage of being of great diversity of chemical structure and have a very wide range of biological activities. The objectives of the present work were to stu-dy the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of phenolic compounds ex-tracted from A. visnaga L. Its extraction is performed by two methods, etha-nol extraction and water extraction. The results showed that A. visnaga L.. ethanolic extract contains a mixture of phytochemical classes as polyphenol, flavonoids and revealed that this plant has high antioxidant activity (IC50 0.069 mg/ml). Regarding the antimicrobial activity results expressed by the diameter of the inhibition zones by diffusion method AWDT, the most signifi-cant inhibition was observed against to Staphylococcus aureus (12 mm) to the ethanol extract at concentration of 100mg / ml. Thus the aqueous ex-tract had a significant inhibitory activity against on the strains Staphylococ-cus aureus (8 mm), E. coli ATCC 10536 (8 mm) to a concentration of 100 mg / ml. The results for the antibacterial properties have shown that Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes and M. luteus.) were more sensitive than gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli ATCC 10536) against from the action of phenolic compounds of the Ammi visnaga ethanolic extract.

Rosmarinus eriocalyx Jord. & Fourr is a well-known aromatic and medicinal plant whose consumption serves to remedy a number of disorders, evergreen bush endemic to Algeria. The present study aimed it investigating the in-vitro anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial for two extracts of Rosmarinus eriocalyx. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH and the reducing power essay, anti-inflammatory activity with the Human Red Blood Cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization method. However, the antimicrobial activity was tested with three bacterial strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 and Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633. The results show an excellent antioxidant and an interesting inflammatory activities but a weak power against the used strains therefore. © 2020 International Formulae Group. All rights reserved. In the present study we evaluate the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of medicinal plant Ipomoea staphylina Roem & Schult. Many bacteria are harmful to human beings and animals. Theses bacteria make diseases the host organisms. Many antibiotics are available in the marker for the treatment of bacterial diseases. However, antibiotics cause unwanted side effect. Thus, the study focused to evaluate ethanol extract of Ipomoea staphylina against bacterial pathogens. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by the method of well diffusion method. Antiinflamatory and antioxidant activity was evaluated by in vitro study method. Ethanol extract of Ipomoea staphylina showed antibacterial activity against different bacteria isolated from chicken at dose depended manner ie., higher dose of plant extract possessed maximum inhibition zone (21.67 ± 1.45 mm) (P<0.05) against selected bacteria. Moreover, plant ethanol extract possessed anti-inflammatory activity and antioxidant activity at dose dependent manner (P<0.05). Higher dose (100 μg/ml) of ethanol extract of Ipomoea staphylina showed maximum anti-inflammatory activity (68.38 %) and antioxidant activity (72%). From this result it is concluded that the medicinal plant Ipomoea staphylina Roem. & Schult. possessed antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Further detailed study will be conducted for the new drug candidate discovery.

Frangipani flower (Plumeria acuminata) and bitter grape (Tinospora crispa L. Miers) stem extract alone shows antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. However, there is a limited report about the actions from the combination of both extracts. Combinations of ethanol extract of white frangipani flower (EFF) and ethanol extract of the bitter grape stem (EBS), each of 0, 1, 2, and 3% were tested for inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus growth and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl,2-picrylhydrazyl) free radicals. A yield of 3.17 and 2.62 g of EFF and EBS, respectively, were resulted from 100 g of dried powdered of the white frangipani flower and bitter grape stem using 200 mL of absolute ethanol. The antimicrobial test was assayed using a 10% stock solution of extract diluted in water. The combination of EFF and EBS showed a synergistic effect on antimicrobial activity, but it proved an antagonistic effect on antioxidant activity. The combination of EFF 3% and EBS 3% showed the highest inhibition index on the S. aureus growth , i.e. 2.02±0.06, which is higher than the inhibition index of Amoxycillin 2%, i.e. 1.85±0.09. The highest antioxidant activity showed by 1% EFF alone (57.5 ± 0.60%), while the lowest was from the combination of EFF 1% and EBS 3% (23.4±0.30%).

  Objective: Determination of biological activities of marine algae collected from the Visakhapatnam coastal region.Methods: Antibacterial activity of algal extracts determined by the well diffusion method, antioxidant activity was determined by reducing power (RP) method and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging method finally anti-inflammatory activity was determined by human red blood cell stabilization method and egg albumin method.Results: Methanolic extracts of three algae have potential inhibition activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Green alga Enteromorpha compressa has better antioxidant activity compared to the Gracilaria arcuata and Ulva fasciata when tested in RP and DPPH method. U. fasciata found good anti-inflammatory activity among the selected three algae.Conclusion: The three tested algae exhibited significant antibacterial and antioxidant activity compared to anti-inflammatory activity. These bioactive compounds containing macroalgae may find their commercial potential in medicine, food, and cosmetic industry

ABSTRACTPhaseoulus lunatus L., a variety of baby lima bean, which is produced in the coastal region of Ecuador, is a profitable crop of that country. Various cultivars of this common bean are considered a sources for nutraceutical compounds, such as bioactive peptides. To assess the potential biologic activities of protein isolates and hydrolysates of P. lunatus baby lima beans, this study evaluates the proteins antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Antioxidant activity was measured by the TBARS method. In-vitro anti-inflammatory activity was measured by the inhibition of denatured protein as well as a diffusion method, according with CLSI guidelines by antimicrobial activity. Both fractions (isolate and hydrolysates) showed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. However, protein hydrolysates (pH 5) had a better performance than protein isolates. The same effect was observed in antimicrobial activity, when protein hydrolysates had a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. These preliminary studies suggest that P. lunatus baby lima beans could have a considerable biological activity for nutraceutical applications.

Objective: The present investigation focuses on the use of Cardiospermum halicacabum L. in their phytochemical and biological activities. Methods: In this study, in vivo stem and in vitro callus ethanolic extracts of C. halicacabum were tested for their phytochemical attributes by qualitative method, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), antioxidant, antibacterial, and bioactive compound properties. The bactericidal activity of the in vivo stem and in vitro callus extract has been evaluated in both Gram+ve and Gram-ve microorganisms using the disk diffusion method. Results: The highest frequency (78%) of well developed, dark green organogenic callus was induced from stem explant on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.7 mg/l 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) and 0.5 mg/l benzyl adenine (BA). The results of FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of functional groups in wild stem and in vitro callus extract of C. halicacabum with various peaks. The total phenolic content in ethanolic extract of in vivo plant and in vitro callus was 80.46 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight and 76.4 mg GAE/g dry weight, respectively. The highest percentage of tannins was measured at 78.03 in wild stem ethanol extracts followed by 75.22 in callus extract. The antioxidant activity of 2,2-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) ethanol extract was found to be 206.54 μg/ml. IC50 values of the stem extracts of C. halicacabum are 306 μg/ml and 286 μg/ml in callus extract, respectively. Antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract was higher for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) with a 17 mm zone of inhibition. Conclusion: The present investigation recommended that the callus ethanolic extract function as a good source of biologically active compounds and natural antioxidants.

Objective: In this work, we investigated the chemical composition and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the Algerian Cistus clusii Dunal essential oil. Methods: Cistus clusii essential oil has been extracted using hydrodistillation method and characterized by GC/MS. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by two different methods DPPH free radical scavenging, and β-carotene bleaching test. The antimicrobial activity was carried out using disc diffusion method against reference strains; Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27865), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), clinical bacterial (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and fungal (Candida albicans) isolates. Results: The chemical profile of the oil showed 31 compounds. This profile was dominated by the presence of monoterpene hydrocarbons (78.4%), oxygenated derivatives (18.8%) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons as minor constituents of this essential oil (1.9%). The major constituents were Camphene (20.6%), γ-Terpinene (16.5%), Sabinene (12.8%), and Terpineol-4 (13.5%). Other compounds were found in moderately good amounts like α-Terpinene (8.9%), α-Thujene (5.9%), α-Pinene (4.2%), and α- Terpinolene (3.1%). The results of the antimicrobial activity showed that the highest activity was observed against C. albicans and it was higher than positive control Fluconazole. The essential oil exhibited a strong antioxidant activity, especially in the β-carotene system. Conclusion: This study indicates that Cistus clusii essential oil showed potent antioxidant and moderate antimicrobial activities which could be used to explain the use of this species in traditional medicine.

Bauhinia variegata is well-known medicinal plant used from the ancient era to till date for their medicinal values. The methanolic extract of Bauhinia variegata barks was screened for phytochemical constituents, antioxidant, phytotoxic and microbial activity. The microbial activity was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi at different concentration of 10, 15 and 20 mg/mL by agar well diffusion method. The plant extract showed the potent antimicrobial activity against the Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Bacillus subtilic and Escherichia coli with zone of inhibition 14 mm, 12mm, 14mm and 11mm respectively. Phytochemical analysis of the extract revealed that the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the plant materials is due to the presence of active secondary metabolites. In DPPH free radical scavenging assay the IC50 value of Bauhinia variegata was found to be 6.48±0.08 ?g/mL, while the IC50 value of the reference standard ascorbic acid was 45.93?g/mL. The extract of Bauhinia variegata, contains high value of phenolic (156.30±0.3 mg GAE/gm) and flavonoid (16.04±1.4 mg QE/gm) content exhibited the high antioxidant activity. The in-vitro phytotoxic bioassay showed 65%, 40%, and 25% growth regulation at just higher conc. of 1000, 100 and 10 ?g/mL with number of fronds 07, 12 and 15 respectively with respect to standard drug Paraquat of concentration 0.015?g/mL.Journal of Institute of Science and Technology, 2015, 20(2): 37-41

ABSTRACTSoft coral Dendronephtya sp., living in the waters of coral reefs that are rather deep, at depths below 10 meters, grow attached to a hard substrate, protected under lumps of living coral or dead coral. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial activity of soft coral Dendronephtya sp., collected from the waters of Tumbak Village, Pusomaen District, Southeast Minahasa Regency, against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Dendronephtya sp., extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent, fractionation using liquid-liquid partition method with n-hexane, chloroform and methanol solvent, and the testing of antimicrobial activity using the Kirby Bauer diffusion method. The results showed that ethanol extract of soft corals (Dendronephtya sp.), n-hexane fraction had inhibition of 8 mm against Escherichia coli bacteria, 7 mm against Staphylococcus aureus while Candida albicans had very good activity in n-hexane fractions of n-hexane. 9.3 mm, so it can be recommended as an antimicrobial. Keywords : Antimicrobial, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Soft Coral (Dendronephtya sp.), Staphylococcus aureus. ABSTRAKKarang lunak Dendronephtya sp., hidup di perairan terumbu karang yang agak dalam, pada kedalaman di bawah 10 meter, tumbuh melekat di dasar yang keras, terlindung di bawah bongkahan karang hidup atau karang mati. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui adanya aktivitas antimikroba dari karang lunak Dendronephtya sp., yang dikoleksi dari perairan Desa Tumbak Kecamatan Pusomaen Kabupaten Minahasa Tenggara terhadap Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus dan Candida albicans. Dendronephtya sp., diekstraksi dengan metode maserasi menggunakan pelarut etanol 96%, fraksinasi menggunakan metode partisi cair-cair dengan pelarut n-heksan, kloroform dan metanol, dan pengujian aktivitas antimikroba menggunakan metode difusi agar Kirby Bauer. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol karang lunak (Dendronephtya sp.) Fraksi karang n-heksan memiliki daya hambat sebesar 8 mm  terhadap bakteri Escherichia coli, 7 mm pada Staphylococcus aureus  sedangkan  Candida albicans aktivitas  yang sangat baik terjadi pada fraksi dan ekstrak n-heksan sebesar 9,3 mm, sehingga dapat direkomendasikan sebagai antimikroba. Kata Kunci : Antimikroba, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli,  Karang Lunak (Dendronephtya sp.), dan Staphylococcus aureus
