Dual-energy imaging has emerged as a superior way to recognize materials in X-ray computed tomography. To estimate material properties such as effective atomic number and density, one often generates images in terms of basis functions. This requires decomposition of the dual-energy sinograms into basis sinograms, and subsequently reconstructing the basis images. However, the presence of metal can distort the reconstructed images. In this paper we investigate how photoelectric and Compton basis functions, and synthesized monochromatic basis (SMB) functions behave in the presence of metal and its effect on estimation of effective atomic number and density. Our results indicate that SMB functions, along with edge-preserving total variation regularization, show promise for improved material estimation in the presence of metal. The results are demonstrated using both simulated data as well as data collected from a dualenergy medical CT scanner.

The presented simulated data compares concentration gradients and electric fields with experimental and numerical data of others. This data is simulated for cases involving liquid junctions and electrolytic transport. The objective of presenting this data is to support a model and theory. This theory demonstrates the incompatibility between conventional electrostatics inherent in Maxwell's equations with conventional transport equations. <br>

Receiver operating characteristics (ROCs) are plots which provide a visual summary of a classifier’s decision response accuracy at varying discrimination thresholds. Typical practice, particularly within psychological studies, involves plotting an ROC from a limited number of discrete thresholds before fitting signal detection parameters to the plot. We propose that additional insight into decision-making could be gained through increasing ROC resolution, using trial-by-trial measurements derived from a continuous variable, in place of discrete discrimination thresholds. Such continuous ROCs are not yet routinely used in behavioural research, which we attribute to issues of practicality (i.e. the difficulty of applying standard ROC model-fitting methodologies to continuous data). Consequently, the purpose of the current article is to provide a documented method of fitting signal detection parameters to continuous ROCs. This method reliably produces model fits equivalent to the unequal variance least squares method of model-fitting (Yonelinas et al., 1998), irrespective of the number of data points used in ROC construction. We present the suggested method in three main stages: I) building continuous ROCs, II) model-fitting to continuous ROCs and III) extracting model parameters from continuous ROCs. Throughout the article, procedures are demonstrated in Microsoft Excel, using an example continuous variable: reaction time, taken from a single-item recognition memory. Supplementary MATLAB code used for automating our procedures is also presented in Appendix B, with a validation of the procedure using simulated data shown in Appendix C.

Payne, Vuletich, and Lundberg’s bias-of-crowds model proposes that a number of empirical puzzles can be resolved by conceptualizing implicit bias as a feature of situations rather than a feature of individuals. In the present article we argue against this model and propose that, given the existing evidence, implicit bias is best understood as an individual-level construct measured with substantial error. First, using real and simulated data, we show how each of Payne and colleagues’ proposed puzzles can be explained as being the result of measurement error and its reduction via aggregation. Second, we discuss why the authors’ counterarguments against this explanation have been unconvincing. Finally, we test a hypothesis derived from the bias-of-crowds model about the effect of an individually targeted “implicit-bias-based expulsion program” within universities and show the model to lack empirical support. We conclude by considering the implications of conceptualizing implicit bias as a noisily measured individual-level construct for ongoing implicit-bias research. BACKGROUND Lifestyle diseases are the primary cause of death worldwide. The gradual growth of negative behavior in humans due to physical inactivity, unhealthy habit, and improper nutrition expedites lifestyle diseases. In this study, we develop a mathematical model to analyze the impact of regular physical activity, healthy habits, and a proper diet on weight change, targeting obesity as a case study. Followed by, we design an algorithm for the verification of the proposed mathematical model with simulated data of artificial participants. OBJECTIVE This study intends to analyze the effect of healthy behavior (physical activity, healthy habits, and proper dietary pattern) on weight change with a proposed mathematical model and its verification with an algorithm where personalized habits are designed to change dynamically based on the rule. METHODS We developed a weight-change mathematical model as a function of activity, habit, and nutrition with the first law of thermodynamics, basal metabolic rate (BMR), total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), and body-mass-index (BMI) to establish a relationship between health behavior and weight change. Followed by, we verified the model with simulated data. RESULTS The proposed provable mathematical model showed a strong relationship between health behavior and weight change. We verified the mathematical model with the proposed algorithm using simulated data following the necessary constraints. The adoption of BMR and TDEE calculation following Harris-Benedict’s equation has increased the model's accuracy under defined settings. CONCLUSIONS This study helped us understand the impact of healthy behavior on obesity and overweight with numeric implications and the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle abstaining from negative behavior change.

We have begun a program to establish a dynamical reference frame based on the motions of minor planets. The program will utilize observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, and will ultimately tie the HIPPARCOS reference system to a dynamical base. Thirty-four minor planets, 20 of which are suitable for observation with the Hubble Space Telescope, have been selected. Ground based observations, particularly crossing-point observations with long focus reflectors, have been initiated.A computer program to simultaneously solve for the corrections of the orbits of the 34 minor planets including the crossing-point observations, was successfully run. The observations are treated by the method of W. H. Jeffreys. Using simulated data, solutions with and without crossing point observations demonstrate the value of those observations to produce a homogeneous and coherent set of results.

Abstract. This study proposes and justifies a Bayesian approach to modeling wavelet coefficients and finding statistically significant features in wavelet power spectra. The approach utilizes ideas elaborated in scale-space smoothing methods and wavelet data analysis. We treat each scale of the discrete wavelet decomposition as a sequence of independent random variables and then apply Bayes' rule for constructing the posterior distribution of the smoothed wavelet coefficients. Samples drawn from the posterior are subsequently used for finding the estimate of the true wavelet spectrum at each scale. The method offers two different significance testing procedures for wavelet spectra. A traditional approach assesses the statistical significance against a red noise background. The second procedure tests for homoscedasticity of the wavelet power assessing whether the spectrum derivative significantly differs from zero at each particular point of the spectrum. Case studies with simulated data and climatic time-series prove the method to be a potentially useful tool in data analysis.

Purpose Recent papers on target capital structure show that debt ratio seems to vary widely in space and time, implying that the functional specifications of target debt ratios are of little empirical use. Further, target behavior cannot be adjudged correctly using debt ratios, as they could revert due to mechanical reasons. The purpose of this paper is to develop an alternative testing strategy to test the target capital structure. Design/methodology/approach The authors make use of a major “shock” to the debt ratios as an event and think of a subsequent reversion as a movement toward a mean or target debt ratio. By doing this, the authors no longer need to identify target debt ratios as a function of firm-specific variables or any other rigid functional form. Findings Similar to the broad empirical evidence in developed economies, there is no perceptible and systematic mean reversion by Indian firms. However, unlike developed countries, proportionate usage of debt to finance firms’ marginal financing deficits is extensive; equity is used rather sparingly. Research limitations/implications The trade-off theory could be convincingly refuted at least for the emerging market of India. The paper here stimulated further research on finding reasons for specific financing behavior of emerging market firms. Practical implications The results show that the firms’ financing choices are not only depending on their own firm’s specific variables but also on the financial markets in which they operate. Originality/value This study attempts to assess mean reversion in debt ratios in a unique but reassuring manner. The results are confirmed by extensive calibration of the testing strategy using simulated data sets.
