Abstract Background Discrepancies between what is transcribed and the actual interview recordings were noticed in qualitative research reports. This study aimed at the development of a new transcription software (Jiegnote), and the evaluation of its effectiveness in the optimization of the transcription process, to minimize transcription completion time, and errors in qualitative research. Methods The study was a mixed methods project implemented from September to November 2020. The qualitative aspect of the study was phenomenological in perspective whereas the quantitative consisted of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a parallel design. Results At the time of the study, the Jiegnote software was a working prototype. We enrolled a total of 26 participants; 14 participants had their data analyzed in the RCT part of the study, 13 participated in the in-depth interviews, and 22 in the answering of Semi Structured Questionnaires. Upon the execution of an independent t test, results showed that, there was no statistical significance between the intervention and control means. On considering the total average transcription completion time and the type of language in which an audio case was recorded, the effect size evaluation implied that the Jiegnote software had a small impact (Hedges' g = 0.413438) in reducing the total average time taken to translate and transcribe audio cases that were recorded in a local language (Luganda), and a large impact (Hedges' g = 1.190919) in reducing the total average time taken to transcribe audio cases that were recorded in a foreign language (English). On considering the total average number of transcription errors and the type of language in which an audio case is recorded, the effect size evaluation implied that the Jiegnote software had a small impact (Hedges' g = 0.213258) in reducing the total average time taken to translate and transcribe audio cases that were recorded in a local language (Luganda). This was further observed (Hedges' g = 0.039928) in the transcription of cases that were recorded in a foreign language (English). On considering the in-depth interview data outcomes, participants responded that the Jiegnote software media looping functions (algorithm) enabled them to accomplish their transcription tasks in a shorter time and with fewer errors compared to the traditional methods. Conclusion The study demonstrates utilities associated with intrapreneurship and technological innovation in an organization setting whereby, the Jiegnote technology that was developed by the researchers, had some impact on the optimization of the qualitative research value chain. This was observed through the effect size (impact) evaluations that were conducted to investigate the superiority of the Jiegnote software against the traditional transcription methods, in minimizing the average number of errors committed, and time taken to complete a transcription process.

AbstrakTeaching English as a foreign language that is a representation of culture has some difficulties. One of the them comes from sounds recognition. An alternative way to accomodate the problem is by acknowledging an onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia provides several different kinds of imitative sound as a cross cultures and language icon to articulate the same thing. Its sources can be taken from comics, caricatures, novels, newspapers, and others. Onomatopoeia could give various perspective of its cultural and language identity in English, Indonesia, and local language.

AbstractTeacher self-efficacy has been abundantly studied. However, it seems that the consequences of teachers’ self-efficacy have not been appropriately explored yet. The research objective was to investigate the consequences of teachers’ teaching self-efficacy. The researchers used a qualitative research method. They collected the data through semi-structured interviews with 20 EFL teachers who were selected through purposive sampling. The interviews were content analyzed thematically. Findings showed that self-efficacy has different consequences: pedagogical, learner-related, and psychological. Each consequence has several sub-categories. It is concluded that high self-efficacy affects teachers’ teaching practices, learners’ motivation, and achievement. It also affects teachers’ burn-out status, psychological being, as well as their job satisfaction. The findings can be theoretically and pedagogically important to EFL teachers, teacher-trainers, and administrators of educational settings.

PurposeThis paper explores which market and product category characteristics could influence the use of foreign language brand names (i.e. whether a brand uses a foreign language versus local language brand name) in some of the largest Latin American countries.Design/methodology/approachHypotheses are tested using 880 brands from 39 product categories and nine Latin American markets using a hierarchical logistic regression.FindingsResults revealed that foreign language brand names are more likely to be used in product categories related to local infrastructure, high-tech and global community. In contrast, local language brand names are more likely to be used in product categories associated to subscriptions. Findings also suggest that Hofstede's national cultural dimensions are significant factors. Finally, the results revealed that foreign language brand names are more likely to be used in markets with a low level of foreign language proficiency.Originality/valueThis paper shows the importance of considering market and product category characteristics and their potential influence on local versus foreign language branding in Latin America – an ignored issue in previous research.

Abstract A recently introduced lot scheduling problem is considered. It is to find a partition of jobs of n orders into lots and to sequence these lots on a single machine so that the total average completion time of the orders is minimized. A simple O(n log n) time algorithm is presented for this problem in the literature, with a relatively sophisticated proof of its optimality. We show that modeling this problem as a classic batching machine problem makes its optimal solution obvious.

This paper explores self-plagiarism in three different articles that reported results of the same research project on reading in a foreign language. This article follows the qualitative research method and an exploratory case study was used. Results support that both inadequate paraphrasing and adequate paraphrasing were given. Regarding inadequate paraphrasing some similar words and ideas were found. On the other hand, using different authors in a specific idea, having different numbers of words in a common issue, and being versatile to present information might lead to adequate paraphrasing. Conclusions suggest that a dialog between editors and authors must be given in order to clear self-plagiarism up. Finally, conclusions also suggest that editors should consider the inclusion of some similar information in articles written by the same author or the same research members

Little attention has been paid to the problems about portfolio keeping in English as a foreign language (EFL) writing, while the existing literature mostly focuses on the effects of portfolios on writing skills of learners, rather than those of teachers or pre-service teachers. This study aims to investigate the problems encountered and contributions of portfolios to the language skills of EFL pre-service teachers. The sample group consists of 39 pre-service teachers; a background questionnaire, interviews, a survey, and essays were used for data collection. The results indicate that portfolios significantly contribute to the writing skills, and that there exist potential problems. It was concluded that teachers and teacher trainers should use portfolio as a learning tool after solving the problems.
