In this paper, we revisit two pieces of conventional wisdom in the current debate about poverty, paying close attention to the price data underlying these findings: that the poor pay more than households of higher income for the goods and services they purchase; and that poverty rates, at least as measured by the U.S. Census, have remained essentially flat since the late 1960s, raising questions about the success of the policies implemented to reduce poverty. By examining scanner data on thousands of household purchases, we find that the poor pay less—not more—for the goods they purchase. And by extending the advances on price measurement in the recent decade back to the 1970s, we find that current poverty rates are less than half of the official numbers.

In this chapter, five contributions are made to advance understanding of U.S.-Cuba relations. First, empirical evidence is provided on outcomes with respect to the flows of persons, goods and services, and capital between Cuba and the United States. While the evidence stresses the last decade, it goes back to the 1990s when feasible and relevant. Second, policies and their implementation by both the U.S. and Cuban governments are viewed as the actions of political agents that provide opportunities and challenges for these outcomes to fluctuate over time in pursuit of a variety of goals. Third, these outcomes are treated as responses of U.S. and Cuban entities and residents as economic agents to the policies and their implementations by the two governments. Fourth, throughout the chapter, interactions between different policies within each country as well as between the two countries are analyzed in terms of their impact on actual outcomes. Finally, in the last substantive section the role of political factors in the two recent U.S. administrations is highlighted to bring out interactions between political and economic dimensions and to illustrate the policies explicitly or implicitly adopted by the Donald Trump administration.

The persistence of poverty in rich countries is something of a puzzle for those who see poverty in terms of resources; from a relational perspective, it is unsurprising. Although public discussion is sometimes dominated by moral judgments about the poor, governments in developed countries have come to see responses to poverty and the protection of people's circumstances as basic elements in the role of a democratic government, and if governments do not ensure that basic living standards are protected, they have failed. Debates tend to centre in practice on money, markets and commodification.

The administration of the seaports in Nigeria rests solely on the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA). This means that, the Port Authority plays an important role in the economic and trade development of Nigeria. Nigeria Ports Authority operates under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Transport with the responsibility of providing specific ports and harbour services for the country’s maritime industry. Presently, Nigerian Ports Authority controls eight (8) major ports excluding oil terminals with a cargo handling capacity of about 35 million tons per annum. However, this paper examined Nigeria ports authority in the effective and efficient port administration in Nigeria, using Apapa port complex as a case study. The paper also examined the role of port worker in achieving the Federal Government objectives in the establishment of sea ports in Nigeria. The paper equally looked at the developmental process of sea ports in Nigeria, as well as the reasons/need for the establishment of sea ports in Nigeria. The paper by extension looked at the setbacks faced by the Nigeria seaports in general and Apapa port in particular since its establishment. The general system theory was used as our theoretical framework of analysis. Based on the poor conditions and inadequate state of equipment at the port, the paper suggests that the Apapa port management in particular and the management of other sea ports in general should facilitate the procurement and maintenance of the functional equipment in the ports to enhance speedy cargo handling. In addition, more warehouses/storage facilities should be built to accommodate incoming and outgoing goods and services therein, among others.

Trademarks of an establishment cannot solely be associated with identification of origin or source. It performs an imperative task of building brand name and value. The dilution theory rejects the opinion that the role of a trademark is solely based on the recognition of the root or source of its origin and that it is not only a figurative representation but carries a creative aspect as well. For the most recent decade, the greatest inquiry in trademark law has been the manner by which to demonstrate weakening or dilution. Dilution has turned out to be a dauntingly slippery idea. The principal issue with dilution law is that it gives a cure without a supportable hypothesis of the harm or damage. Even though lately the concept has been recognized in International as well as domestic jurisdiction putting an immense responsibility on domestic jurisdiction to protect trademarks against dilution, very little has been discussed or clarified regarding the theory of dilution. Ambiguity of such nature facilitated this research trying to spot some light on the theory of dilution comparing it from divergent angles in different jurisdictions. The paper also highlights the interpretation mechanism of the courts of the dilution provision and explains the concept further with reference to important cases under the U.S. laws and European judgments in the context of the Dilution laws and draws a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of the legal framework present in India with that of the USA.

AbstractThis article reviews the current debate on whether U.S. agricultural productivity growth is slowing. It also assesses recent research on how productivity is related to long-term investment in research and development (R&D). It describes significant changes taking place in the U.S. agricultural research system, including the growing role of private agribusiness as a main developer of new agricultural technologies and what this implies for agricultural science policy. The conclusion has suggestions for future research on these issues.

towards jumping from the category of developing economy to developed economy there is one big factor that stops and poses a hindrance in its path of advancement and that obstacle is termed as Poverty. The Indian economic policy focuses on a high growth rate along with a equal participation of the poor so that they avail the opportunities available in the market economy. And in order to ensure the participation of the poor it has become important for the country to create a platform where the poor can easily access the various financial products. Microfinance is one such strategy for inclusive growth. Microfinance can change the life of the poor though not completely but a reasonable change can be ensured. In different phases of life women play a crucial role despite the discrimination that is faced by them. But equality can be endowed to women by enhancing the entrepreneurial skills in them. This is possible through Self Help Groups (SHGs). In India women produce around 30% of the total food consumed but she gets only 10% of the property or wealth of the country. Development of women is inevitable for the development and growth of any economy. SHGs happen to be a positive step in this direction. Along with these mediums there should be a cheap and easy source of credit for them and Microfinance fulfills the requirement. This study aims to find the role of this strong medium of Microfinance in the advancement of SHGs in India
