This chapter explores the challenges faced by women and the possibilities for improving economic development frameworks for this gender-specific group. It explains why women play an important role in bringing about economic development and what limits their engagement in income-generating activities. After providing a brief context of the evolution of thinking around women and development, from ‘Women in Development’ to ‘Gender and Development’, the chapter considers how and why women have been integrated into processes of ‘development’. It then presents evidence on the importance of women to economic development and highlights constraints on realising the full potential of women in the process of economic development. It also identifies priority areas of intervention for promoting gender equality that in turn will also help bring economic growth.

AbstractThis article examines the position of the Malay religious elite towards the idea of women as leaders. Based on an analysis of the writings and sermons of a sample of the religious elite, the article concludes that they continue to be of the view that gender roles in modern society are ‘fixed’, ‘divine’, and ‘unquestionable’. By exploring Mohammed Arkoun’s concept of the ‘unthinkable’, I argue that the notion that women are unfit for top political leadership positions, by virtue of their gender, results from a parochial attitude towards traditions relating to women’s role in society and from a general failure to re-evaluate traditions in the light of the modern-day context. By traditions here, I refer not only to the hadiths (recorded sayings of the Prophet Mohammad), but also compilations of Qurʾanic exegesis (tafsīr) and juristic opinions (fatāwā, s. fatwa) passed down from one generation to another in the last 1,400 years of Islamic history. The article also explores how the religious elite’s views of gender equality might be reformed—it suggests that they need to be challenged with alternative discourses in order to transform their attitude towards religious sources from one that is unquestioning to one that is more questioning.

The aim of this article is to compare women’s activism in Diaspora communities in Muslim majority countries, such as Iran, with some of the experiences of women activists in Western counties such as Australia. This is by no means a definitive account of Arab and Muslim women’s activism in either country but an attempt to raise some questions and provide a framework in order to understand some of the issues facing Arab and Muslim activists today. I believe that it is important to look at these issues in a way that is contextualized in terms of the material circumstances in which women living in Diaspora communities find themselves. In doing so, I hope to reveal the complexity and dynamism of women’s activism and to take on critically, Orientalist, essentialist and racist arguments regarding the nature of Arab and Muslim women’s role in opposing war and neo-liberalism and in the struggle for gender equality. As Edward Said argues, exile forces us to “see things not simply as they are, but as they have come to be that way. Look at situations as contingent, not as inevitable, look at them as a series of historical choices made by men and women, facts of society made by human beings not as natural or God-given, therefore unchangeable, permanent, irreversible.”

We agree that these allegations have allowed women to acquire rights and building an equality agenda. Therefore, we propose to analyze the role of NGOs committed to gender equality in Cape Verde for the defense of women's rights in a context of invisibility of women's role in public sphere. The methodology is document research and interviews with three NGO”™s Presidents. These NGOs have created conditions that ensure equality between men and women, with particular emphasis on promoting the empowerment of women, especially to counter the inequality indicators. These organizations have demonstrated capacity to promote change, causing changes in the social structure, influencing new practices and causing new social relationship models of gender equality. The debate on women’s social role in Islam is an endless issue. What hasbeen done by contemporary muslim thinkers to cover women issues is notenough to influence central feminism issue, gender equality and genderequity. It can be shown from the stereotype for women to limit women’ssocial role only in domestic area still exists. The stereotype on womenis based on the understanding religious doctrine which is inherited byprevious generation and it is considered to have historical root in Prophet’stradition and His followers. This writing tries to prove that   in the age ofthe Prophet and the age of khulafa ar Rasyidun can be the pilot project ofsocial role of women historically as well as normatively. At least, womenplayed significant role during that age in social, economics, and politics areas. All the facts of women’s role are included within Qur’an and hadith and they are also released in classical history of Islam such as Tarikh alThabariand Thabaqat Ibn Sa’ad.

Increasingly, corporations are championing the cause of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Global South. Tapping into notions about women’s role as caregivers, empowerment promotion is simultaneously meant to lead to family and community development, profitability for those who invest in women and girls and economic growth. While emerging feminist scholarship on this kind of ‘transnational business feminism’ (TBF) (Roberts, 2012, 2015) has largely scrutinised gender governance based on visual and textual materials produced by corporations themselves, this article expands the methodological engagement with TBF by reflecting on how we translated the concept into two distinct field-based research projects. The article compares and contrasts our situated fieldwork experiences, focusing in particular on accessing corporate elites and development partners and the epistemological rifts that emerged in conversations with them. It documents how our experiences of blockages, hostile relations and miscommunications have shaped our critical feminist research, and points to some of the power relations at work within TBF.

Saudi Arabia is one of the Moslem countries in the Middle East which limits women’s rights. These women have limited access to economy, education, as well as politics. 2009 was the milestone for women’s public participation in Saudi Arabia. This research aims to analyze the development of gender equality issue in Saudi Arabia which encourages policy changes in the era of King Salman. Gender is a character owned by someone in accordance with his/her social role based on his/her sex. Gender equality focuses on the equality of social role which is obtained by both men and women. In Koran surah Al- Baqarah article 288, there are two perspectives about women’s position which included normative and contextual aspects. Gender equality in Islamic’s perspective has been recognized in OKI’s Charter article 6. This research uses qualitative method with literature study approach. The result shows that the dynamic of policy changes in Saudi Arabia is influenced by the condition of Saudi’s women socio-cultural itself, the debate of the Ulama about gender equality which proposes Wassatiya’s perspective and Vision 2030 by Mohammad bin Salman as the hope of the implementation of the policy which gives a bigger opportunity for women’s role in public.

The focus is on the global challenge of gender disparities, including horizontal and vertical segregation, the androcentric academic culture, and the gender pay gap. The authors warn of possible contamination of AI with human gender biases, which can be detrimental to academic hiring and assessment procedures. Summarizing gender-equality policies and practices available worldwide, the authors give recommendations on women's empowerment in HE&R on the global, national, and organizational levels.

Empowered women encourage economic development and assist in making stable societies, and everyone benefits from the growth and stability that empowered women add to the economy. According to a study by McKinsey, if the economic participation of women is promoted globally, especially in developing countries, then it might enhance world economic growth by $28 trillion dollars by 2025. In Uzbekistan disparities exist between men and women in education, health, employment and income opportunities, control over assets, personal security, and participation in the political process in the country. The women come across significant barriers which deter her to participate fully and freely in contributing to the economic growth of the country. The stereotypical image of women, where we revere her mainly as a mother, the guardian of family wellbeing, is rooted in the minds of people; it is true, but in today's world, she should not be an inactive bystander, but an active and proactive contributor in the currently going on democratic transformations in the country. There is no denying the fact that Uzbek women have made a considerable progress in the last few years, but they have to struggle against many handicaps and social evils in the male-dominated society. The empowerment of women is one of the solutions to the problems of inequality, subordination, and marginalization. A critical problem and a high priority for the Government of Uzbekistan are to improve women's role and empower them to take part in the economic growth of the world. This chapter speaks about the government initiatives in empowering Uzbek women and bringing gender equality in the society. The data for the chapter was collected from secondary sources. The objectives of this article are to examine and analyse the initiatives taken by Uzbek government and other UN bodies for gender equality and women empowerment. The same strategies can be replicated in other parts of Central Asia where women are still not treated equally and can be empowered to contribute to the socioeconomic growth. The current research may suggest the authorities and civil society organizations to improve and implement inventive methodologies to attain gender equality, advancement, and peace.

Women’s participation in politics is a important emancipation strategy of women in achieving gender equality. In this article, I seek to discuss the participation of women in the parliamentary body in the district of Kendal and women’s role in determining policy in the district. Method used in this research is observation and interview. Research result shows that women’s participation in Kendal is still low; of the 45 legislative council members, only 4 are women, though the population of women outnumbers male population. The low participation of women roots from many barriers, such as psychological, economic, political, social and cultural barriers. This limited number also does not have enough competence  to pass gender equality policies in the parliament. The consequence of low participation of women is the lack of gender perspective in the policy made by the legislative body.
