Online Learning and Optimization of (Some) Cyclic Pricing Policies in the Presence of Patient Customers

Problem definition: We consider the problem of joint learning and optimization of cyclic pricing policies in the presence of patient customers. In our problem, some customers are patient, and they are willing to wait in the system for several periods to make a purchase until the price is lower than their valuation. The seller does not know the joint distribution of customers’ valuation and patience level a priori and can only learn this from the realized total sales in every period. Academic/practical relevance: The revenue management problem with patient customers has been studied in the literature as an optimization problem, and cyclic policy has been shown to be optimal in some cases. We contribute to the literature by studying this problem from the joint learning and optimization perspective. Indeed, to the best of our knowledge, our paper is the first work that studies online learning and optimization for multiperiod pricing with patient customers. Methodology: We introduce new dynamic programming formulations for this problem, and we develop two nontrivial upper confidence bound–based learning algorithms. Results: We analyze both decreasing cyclic policies and so-called threshold-regulated policies, which contain both the decreasing cyclic policies and the nested decreasing cyclic policies. We show that our learning algorithms for these policies converge to the optimal clairvoyant decreasing cyclic policy and threshold-regulated policy at a near-optimal rate. Managerial implications: Our proposed algorithms perform significantly better than benchmark algorithms that either ignore the patient customer characteristic or simply use the standard estimate-then-optimize framework, which does not encourage enough exploration; this highlights the importance of “smart learning” in the context of data-driven decision making. In addition, our numerical results also show that combining our algorithms with smart estimation methods, such as linear interpolation or least square estimation, can significantly improve their empirical performance; this highlights the benefit of combining smart learning with smart estimation, which further increases the practical viability of the algorithms.

Fuzzy linear regression has been extensively studied since its inception symbolized by the work of Tanaka et al. in 1982. As one of the main estimation methods, fuzzy least squares approach is appealing because it corresponds, to some extent, to the well known statistical regression analysis. In this article, a restricted least squares method is proposed to fit fuzzy linear models with crisp inputs and symmetric fuzzy output. The paper puts forward a kind of fuzzy linear regression model based on structured element, This model has precise input data and fuzzy output data, Gives the regression coefficient and the fuzzy degree function determination method by using the least square method, studies the imitation degree question between the observed value and the forecast value.

<em>The Covid-19 outbreak and the enactment of restrictions on community activities have had many impacts, one of which is the change in teaching methods from offline learning or face-to-face activities to online learning or distance learning</em><em>. These changes can affect the learning process, especially subjects related to business practices, such as entrepreneurship. In online learning, several factors contribute to the successful delivery of online courses. However, little is known about the impact of these factors on Indonesian students' interest in entrepreneurship. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of personal attitude and e-learning on interest in entrepreneurship in the Covid-19 pandemic era. Data was collected through an online survey of 190 students who were taking entrepreneurship courses at selected universities in Yogyakarta. Data collected through online surveys were analyzed using Smart Partial Least Square (SmartPLS) 3.0. The results of this study found that interest in entrepreneurship is significantly influenced by personal attitude and e-learning. This study also found that perceived learning was not able to moderate the effect of e-learning on entrepreneurial interest.</em>

In this paper, a Nonhomogeneous Poisson Process (NHPP) reliability model based on the two-parameter Log-Logistic (LL) distribution is considered. The essential model&rsquo;s characteristics are derived and represented graphically. The parameters of the model are estimated by the Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Non-linear Least Square (NLS) estimation methods for the case of time domain data. An application to show the flexibility of the considered model are conducted based on five real data sets and using three evaluation criteria. We hope this model will help as an alternative model to other useful reliability models for describing real data in reliability engineering area.

The purpose of this research is to investigate factors that influence the intent of behavior using technology in online learning. The study uses structural equation modeling using a partial least square approach to test the hypotheses. Respondents selected using purposive sampling, and the questionnaires were distributed through online surveys and received a response of 96 respondents. Results show that latent variables, performance expectations, business expectations, and facility conditions have a positive and significant relationship with the intent of individual behaviour in the use of technology in online learning. The latent variable "condition facility" is the most influential factor. This research provides an important overview and understanding for policymakers in designing frameworks to pay attention to facility conditions. Further research is suggested in the future covering samples from various provinces in Indonesia. This study adds to the literature primarily on factors affecting behavioral intent to use technology in online learning. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi niat perilaku guru menggunakan teknologi dalam pembelajaran online. Penelitian ini menggunakan pemodelan persamaan struktural dengan menggunakan pendekatan partial least square untuk menguji hipotesis. Berdasarkan purposive sampling, kuesioner disebarkan melalui survei online dan mendapat tanggapan dari 96 responden. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa variabel laten, ekspektasi kinerja, ekspektasi usaha, dan kondisi fasilitas memiliki hubungan positif dan signifikan dengan niat perilaku individu dalam penggunaan teknologi dalam pembelajaran online. Variabel laten “fasilitas kondisi” merupakan faktor yang paling berpengaruh. Penelitian ini memberikan gambaran dan pemahaman penting bagi pembuat kebijakan dalam merancang kerangka kerja untuk memperhatikan kondisi fasilitas. Penelitian lebih lanjut disarankan di masa depan mencakup sampel dari berbagai provinsi di Indonesia. Studi ini menambah literatur terutama pada faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi niat perilaku untuk menggunakan teknologi dalam pembelajaran online.


In this paper, we have defined a new two-parameter new Lindley half Cauchy (NLHC) distribution using Lindley-G family of distribution which accommodates increasing, decreasing and a variety of monotone failure rates. The statistical properties of the proposed distribution such as probability density function, cumulative distribution function, quantile, the measure of skewness and kurtosis are presented. We have briefly described the three well-known estimation methods namely maximum likelihood estimators (MLE), least-square (LSE) and Cramer-Von-Mises (CVM) methods. All the computations are performed in R software. By using the maximum likelihood method, we have constructed the asymptotic confidence interval for the model parameters. We verify empirically the potentiality of the new distribution in modeling a real data set.

In wireless communication, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) plays a major role because of its high transmission rate. Channel estimation and tracking have many different techniques available in OFDM systems. Among them, the most important techniques are least square (LS) and minimum mean square error (MMSE). In least square channel estimation method, the process is simple but the major drawback is it has very high mean square error. Whereas, the performance of MMSE is superior to LS in low SNR, its main problem is it has high computational complexity. If the error is reduced to a very low value, then an exact signal will be received. In this paper an extensive review on different channel estimation methods used in MIMO-OFDM like pilot based, least square (LS) and minimum mean square error method (MMSE) and least minimum mean square error (LMMSE) methods and also other channel estimation methods used in MIMO-OFDM are discussed.

This chapter introduces the overall concept of multimedia Quality of Experience (QoE) over the Internet. It presents all the elements of multimedia QoE ecosystem and emphasizes their roles in determining the user satisfaction. The chapter also presents different multimedia transmission components and how these components contribute to successful transmission of the media content. In addition, some key performance indicators relevant to the multimedia QoE are presented with more emphasis on network and application level indicators. Furthermore, different QoE estimation methods and techniques along with QoS/QoE learning algorithms are presented. Finally, the chapter includes some of the future challenges and issues related to multimedia QoE.

Generalized Maximum Entropy (GME) approach is one of the alternative estimation methods for Regression Analysis. GME approach is superior to other classical approaches in terms of parameter estimation accuracy when some or none of the assumptions of classical approaches are violated. However, determining bounds of parameter support vectors is one of the open parts of this approach when researchers have no prior information about the parameters. If support vectors cannot be determined correctly, parameters estimations will not be obtained correctly. There are some theoretical studies about GME for different datasets in the literature, but there are fewer studies about how to determine parameter support vectors. To obtain robust parameter estimations in GME, we introduced a new iterative procedure for determining parameter support vectors bounds for multilevel dataset. In this study, the new iterative procedure was applied for multi-level random intercept model and the new procedure was tested both simulation study and the real life data. The Classical and the new procedures of GME estimations were compared to Generalized Least Square Estimations in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) statistics. As a result, the estimations of the new approach provided lower RMSE values than classical methods.
