Character is something that is reflected in human beings through their words, actions and movements in daily life. Good characters are expected by everyone. Indonesia has sparked 18 national character values that must be owned by its citizens. Characters will be formed through daily habituation that is done consistently, exemplary and repetitive. One environment that helps the development of children's character is the school environment, where habituation in the school environment must be in line with habituation in the home environment and community environment. This article was written to look at how the school environment can help in character development, by taking one of the schools that focuses on students' character education, namely the character school in the Indonesia Heritage Foundation (IHF) Depok, in terms of its education management and education model.

It would be interesting to speculate why particular lines of enquiry flourish and fade. The study of ‘character’ is a case in point. In the '20s and early '30s the study of ‘character’ was quite a flourishing branch of psychology. It then came to an abrupt halt and, until recent times, there has been almost nothing in the literature on the subject. Perhaps it was the notorious Hartshorne and May Character Education Enquiry, and the inferences that were mistakenly drawn from it, that killed it; perhaps it was the pre-occupation with something more general and amorphous called ‘personality’; perhaps it was the mixture of metaphysics and methodological neurosis centred around the rat. Who knows? Anyway, the study of character is very much with us again as is revealed not merely by Riesman's Lonely Crowd but also by the recent study by Peck and Havighurst called The Psychology of Character Development. The British Journal of Educational Psychology has also, for some time, been running a symposium on The Development of Moral Values in Children.

Meanwhile, character education management is a process that is carried out jointly, involving many people and institutions in order to realize the ideals of national education goals, so that students become human beings who believe, fear God Almighty, and have noble morals. Al-Qur'an also guides people to become superior individuals. Namely, a person who likes reading, who knows his identity, knows his God, likes to write, and research is his life necessity. Even the hadith of the Prophet clearly and emphatically explains, that since birth humans have brought the potential for character education, namely: having a good conscience and good thinking, so that they can develop their potential in accordance with the demands and developments of the times

Character education is a vital instrument in determining the progress of a nation. Therefore the government needs to build educational institutions in order to produce good human resources that are ready to oversee and deliver the nation at a progressive level. It’s just that in reality, national education is not in line with the ideals of national education because the output is not in tune with moral values on the one hand and the potential for individuals to compete in world intellectual order on the other hand. Therefore, as a solution to these problems is the need for the applicationof character education from an early age.
