To evaluate the effect of telmisartan on blood glucose levels and blood lipid levels in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Eighteen Wistar albino rats weighing 150-200gms of either sex were randomly selected from the central animal facility, and divided into 3 groups. Diabetes was induced by injecting Streptozotocin intraperitonelly. The control group received 1% Gum acacia (oral), standard group received 0.5 mg/kg Glibenclamide (oral) and the test group received Telmisartan 7.2mg/kg body weight (oral) from 0-28 days respectively. Body weight of the individual rats were measured on the respective days before blood glucose estimation on 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 & 28th day and fasting blood glucose was estimated by (ACCUCHECK) glucometer. Estimation of fasting lipid profile by lipid screening strips on 1st and 28th day. When compared to control the capillary blood glucose (CBG) levels in the Telmisartan group was less at all the intervals but comparable with that of standard drug Glibenclamide in Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Improved lipid profile was seen with the Telmisartan group when compared to control group in Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Hypoglycemic activity and improved lipid profile action was seen with Telmisartan group which is comparable to standard drug glibenclamide in streptozotocin induced diabetic albino rats.

.The main purpose of present study was to perform phytochemical screening and explore the anti-hyperglycaemic properties of Alangium salvifolium root extract in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats. A. salvifolium root gave maximum extractive values of 6.4 % w/w with Ethanol and other parameters were within limits. The extract gave positive tests for phytosterols, triterpenes, flavonoids, carbohydrates and alkaloids. The ethanolic extract of A. salvifolium was found to be nearly as potent as tolbutamide in decreasing the blood glucose levels in normal fasting rats. In normal control group the percent reduction in blood glucose indicated that the extract is fast acting. The extract showed significant decrease in blood glucose, when compared with tolbutamide. The evaluated blood glucose levels in alloxan induced diabetic rats were significantly decreased up to 24th h compared to tolbutamide. A single oral administration of alcoholic extract at doses 100, 250 and 500 mg per kg produced a significant blood glucose reduction in a dose dependent manner in normal and diabetic rats. These data confirm the hypoglycaemic and anti-hyperglycaemic effect of alcoholic extract of A. salvifolium root in normal and diabetic rats respectively when compared with standard drug tolbutamide.Keywords: Alangium salvifolium; Ethanolic extract; Alloxan induced; Hypoglycaemic action.© 2011 JSR Publications. Eriobotrya japonica locally called as loquat in Kashmir has been studied in various parts of the world but little work has been reported on Kashmiri loquat. The chemical nature of fruits and vegetables offers a great diversity of biological properties and plays an important role in the field of pharmacology. There is a quest for newer drugs with few adverse effects and this poses a challenge for the development of new drugs. The study was undertaken to study the activities of ethanolic extract of Eriobotrya japonica fruits in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. The phytochemical screening of the plant was also done. The animals were divided into five groups. Normal Control group received only the vehicle. Toxic group included those animals in which diabetes was induced by streptozotocin. The 3rd group was those animals which received streptozotocin and standard antidiabetic drug-glibenclamide. 4th group included those diabetic animals which received 50 mg/kg b.w dose of fruits of Eriobotrya japonica. 5th group animals included those diabetic animals which received 100 mg/kg b.w of the plant extract. The biochemical parameters that were evaluated were blood glucose levels and lipid profile tests. The body weight was also checked. Histopathology of pancreas was also done. The results showed significant decrease in blood glucose levels, lipid profile tests in animals treated with different doses of the plant extracts. Histopathology of pancreas also showed positive results.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that is raising health concerns. Eriosema psoraleoides is one of the medicinal plants reported to be used in managing this condition in Eastern Nigeria. This study investigated the effect of four fractions [(n-hexane; n-hexane: dichloromethane (50:50); dichloromethane; and dichloromethane: methanol (95:5)] of the n-hexane leaf extract of this plant on the blood glucose levels of alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The n-hexane extract was obtained by maceration, filtration, and evaporation using a rotary evaporator. Phytochemical screening of the extracts was carried out using standard methods. The extract was fractionated using column chromatography, and ten fractions were obtained. The fractions were pooled together into four fractions based on the similarity in their Rf values. A dose of 200mg/kg of each of the fractions was given orally for 7 days to the alloxan-induced diabetic rats, and plasma blood glucose concentrations determined. Preliminary screening of the extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, steroids, reducing sugars, tannins and combined anthraquinones. Two fractions, the n-hexane: dichloromethane (50:50) and the dichloromethane, produced significant (p 0.05) decrease in blood glucose concentrations in their treated groups compared to that of glibenclamide (standard drug) treated, and the diabetic untreated groups of the diabetic rats. However, the n-hexane and the dichloromethane: methanol (95:5) fractions produced no significant (p 0.05) decrease in blood glucose concentrations. The observed antidiabetic property of the n-hexane: dichloromethane (50:50) and the dichloromethane (100%) fractions suggests that Eriosema psoraleoides could be used in the management of diabetes and this gives credence to its use in ethnomedicine for this purpose.

Background: The objective of the study was to scientifically investigate the oral hypoglycemic activity of Caesalpinia bonduc on Alloxan induced diabetic albino rats. To compare the hypoglycemic effect of Caesalpinia bonduc with that of the standard drug Glibenclamide used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.Methods: Adult healthy albino rats of wister strain of either sex weighing 150-200gms were included in the study. The animals were divided into 4 groups namely control, diabetic control, standard and test groups with 6 animals in each group. Diabetes was chemically induced using alloxan to produce hyperglycemia in rats. Standard drug Glibenclamide suspended in gum acacia was administered for standard group. Test drug Caesalpinia bonduc was administered for test group. Morning around 9 a.m. blood glucose levels were recorded on 1st, 3rd, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days.Results: The control group of rats showed no variation. The diabetic control rats showed consistent hyperglycemia. Comparing the test drug Caesalpinia bonduc to the standard drug Glibenclamide, the test drug was 1.38 times more efficacious than the standard.Conclusions: The alcoholic extract of Caesalpinia bonduc (seeds) has shown more anti diabetic activity by lowering the blood glucose levels in diabetic rats significantly. These findings suggest that hypoglycemic potential of the test compound Caesalpinia bonduc is promising and found to be more significant than the standard compound.

Aims: Arganimide A (4,4-dihydroxy-3,3-imino-di-benzoic acid) is a compound belonging to a family of aminophenolics found in fruit of Argania spinosa. The purpose of this study was to investigate the glucose and lipid lowering activity of Arganimide A (ARG A). Methods: The effect of a single dose and daily oral administration of Arganimide A (ARG A) on blood glucose levels and plasma lipid profile was tested in normal and streptozotocin (STZ) diabetic rats at a dose of 2 mg/kg body weight. Results: Single oral administration of ARG A reduced blood glucose levels from 26.50±0.61 mmol/L to 14.27±0.73 mmol/L (p<0.0001) six hours after administration in STZ diabetic rats. Furthermore, blood glucose levels were decreased from 5.35±0.30 mmol/L to 3.57±0.17 mmol/L (p<0.0001) and from 26.50±0.61 mmol/L to 3.67±0.29 mmol/L (p<0.0001) in normal and STZ diabetic rats, respectively, after seven days of treatment. Moreover, no significant changes in body weight in normal and STZ rats were shown. According to the lipid profile, the plasma triglycerides levels were decreased significantly in diabetic rats after seven days of ARG treatment (p<0.05). Moreover, seven days of ARG A treatment decreased significantly the plasma cholesterol concentrations (p<0.001). Conclusion: ARG A possesses glucose and lipid-lowering activity in diabetic rats and this natural compound may be beneficial in the treatment of diabetes.

  Objective: The present study was aimed to evaluate antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities of methanolic extract of Aristolochia bracteolata (MEAB) against dexamethasone-induced diabetic rat model.Methods: Methanolic extract was prepared by soxhlet extraction and was evaluated for antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activity using dexamethasone-induced model. The MEAB was administered orally at a dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight glibenclamide was used as standard drug. On 0th and 11th day, blood was collected by retro-orbit plexus.Results: In this model blood glucose levels were determined on 0th and 11th days and MEAB significantly reduced the blood glucose levels in diabetic rats. The effect of MEAB on serum lipid profile such as total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very LDL (VLDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) was also measured on the 11th day in the diabetic rats. Significant reduction in TC, TGs, LDL, and VLDL levels and improvement in HDL level were observed in diabetic rats.Conclusion: From the results, it was found that the MEAB possess antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities.

Aim.To study the associations between blood lipid profile and blood glucose levels in men with coronary heart disease (CHD), stable effort angina (SEA), metabolic syndrome (MS), and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2).Material and methods.The study included 82 men (mean age 50,5±0,9 years) with CHD, Functional Class I–III SEA, MS, and DM-2. The following lipid profile parameters were assessed: total cholesterol (TCH), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL–CH), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL–CH), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL–CH), atherogenic index (AI), and triglyceride index (TGI), together with fasting blood glucose.Results.There were positive (direct) associations between higher levels (>90th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose, as well as between lower levels (≤10th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose. At the same time, there were negative (inverse) associations between lower lipid levels (≤10th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and higher glucose levels (>90th percentile), as well as between higher lipid levels (>90th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and lower glucose levels (≤10th percentile).Conclusion.Dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia demonstrate synergetic proatherogenic effects in patients with CHD, SEA, MS, and DM-2, as suggested by significant heterogeneous (direct and inverse) associations between lipid profile parameters and fasting blood glucose. The results obtained provide an opportunity for the assessment of risk levels, prognosis, and need for pharmacological prevention and treatment in patients with combined cardiovascular pathology.

  Objective: This study was conducted to scientifically evaluate the antidiabetic and antioxidant effects of ethanolic leaf extract of Erythrina abbysinica (EEA).Methods: Acute and sub-chronic effects of EEA at 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg/bwt and glibenclamide (GL) at 5 mg/kg/bwt. were evaluated in both normal and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic male Wistar rats (250–300 g). The acute studies were performed using oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). In sub-chronic studies, animals were orally administered with EEA and GL daily for 6 w. Brine shrimp assay was used to determine the toxicity of EEA. 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, ferric reducing capacity of plasma, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assays were used to determine antioxidant properties of EEA.Results: Following OGTT, EEA significantly (p<0.05) and dose-dependently (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg/bwt) decreased blood glucose levels in both normal and STZ-induced diabetic rats when compared with positive and negative control counterparts at all-time points, whereas GL significantly (p<0.05) decreased blood glucose only in normal rats but not in diabetic rats. Daily, oral administration of EEA for 6 w significantly (p<0.05) and dose-dependently (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg/bwt) decreased blood glucose levels in STZ-induced diabetic rats when compared with the diabetic control group. EEA revealed weak toxicity with a lethal concentration50 value of 997 μg/ml). Furthermore, EEA showed significant free radical scavenging, total antioxidant, and anti-lipid peroxidative capacities.Conclusion: The study has shed more light on the scientific basis for the use of E. abbysinica in management of diabetes in some communities of Eastern Cape of South Africa.

Objective: The present study was aimed to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity and in vivo antioxidant effect of methanolic extract of whole plant of Psydrax dicoccos (MEPD) belonging to the family Rubiaceae.Methods: MEPD was prepared by Soxhlet extraction. Wistar rats weighing (180–200 g) were divided into six groups (n=6), with three doses of 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg of extract. Metformin was used as a standard drug. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin (STZ) (40–50 mg/kg, i.p) in control group. The animals were treated with different doses of extracts for 21 days, and on the 22nd day, the blood glucose levels along with antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and lipid peroxidase (LPO) were determined.Results: The phytochemical screening of the extract showed the presence of carbohydrates, phenolics, flavonoids, glycosides, and tannins. The methanolic extract of MEPD at the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight showed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels (**p<0.001) with the value of 151.2 mg/dl on the 22nd day at 8 h. A promising antioxidant effect was also evident from the determination of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, and LPO.Conclusion: The P. dicoccos extract revealed a potential effect of antihyperglycemic activity and combating nature on oxidative stress induced by STZ.

A protein diet is an alternative to control hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia conditions in diabetic patients. However, for the program to run optimally, the implementation of technology in the form of TeleHealth is needed to help educate patients on a regular and flexible basis. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of implementing TeleHealth using the SKEDIt application for protein diet education in diabetic patients. Methods: This research is a quasi-experimental study, pre and post-test with a control group. The subjects involved were 20 diabetic patients, divided into 2 groups (intervention and control). Parameters analyzed were lipid profile and blood glucose levels. There was no difference in lipid profile and blood glucose levels between the intervention and control groups (p > 0.05). However, there was a difference between the pre and post-test on cholesterol parameters in the lipid profile examination of the control group: p=0.031 and LDL p=0.021 (p <0.05). Implementation of TeleHealth using SKEDit may be an effective recommendation to support health education methods but needs to be supported by good patient compliance.
