In this research, switchgrass (SG) fiber-reinforced poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) biocomposites were prepared by extrusion followed by injection molding machine. The methylene-diphenyl-diisocyanate-polybutadiene (MDIPB) prepolymer was used to enhance the impact strength of the biocomposites. In addition, the polymeric methylene-diphenyl-diisocyanate (PMDI) compatibilizer was used to enhance the mechanical properties of the composites. The effect of compatibilizer on mechanical, crystallization melting, thermomechanical, melt flow index (MFI), morphological, and thermal stability properties of the composites was studied. Thermomechanical properties of the biocomposites were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the interfacial adhesion between the fiber and matrix. The results showed that MDIPB and PMDI have a significant effect on the mechanical properties of the composites. The impact strength of MDIPB- and PMDI-compatibilized composites was increased by 87 % when compared to the uncompatibilized composite.

Investigations related to polymer/metal composites are often limited to the analysis of the electrical and thermal conductivity of the materials. The presented study aims to analyze the impact of aluminum (Al) filler content (from 1 to 20 wt%) on the rarely investigated properties of composites based on the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix. The crystalline structure, rheological (melt flow index and oscillatory rheometry), thermal (differential scanning calorimetry), as well as static (tensile tests, hardness, rebound resilience) and dynamic (dynamical mechanical analysis) mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The incorporation of 1 and 2 wt% of aluminum filler resulted in small enhancements of mechanical properties, while loadings of 5 and 10 wt% provided materials with a similar performance to neat HDPE. Such results were supported by the lack of disturbances in the rheological behavior of composites. The presented results indicate that a significant content of aluminum filler may be introduced into the HDPE matrix without additional pre-treatment and does not cause the deterioration of composites’ performance, which should be considered beneficial when engineering PE/metal composites.

This research is to identify the difference in melt flow and mechanical properties in hybrid composites between kenaf and rice husk that each of the filler was compounded with composite material of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) in different loading amount. Different filler loading up to 30 parts of kenaf fibers and rice husk particulate were mixed with the fixed 30% amount of CaCO3. Compounded hybrid composite were prepared and tested for melt flow index, tensile and impact strength. Addition of both fillers had decreased melt flow index (MFI). MFI of rice husk/CaCO3 was higher than kenaf/CaCO3 in HDPE composites. Tensile strength, elongation at break and impact properties of both hybrid composites had decreased with increasing filler content. Tensile strength of kenaf/CaCO3 was higher than rice husk/CaCO3 due to intrinsic fiber structure of kenaf which has some reinforcing effect compared to rice husk. While, impact strength of rice husk/CaCO3 was improved with addition of filler but drastically decrease as the rice husk content were increased up to 30% due to high silica content in rice husk. The Youngs Modulus was increased with addition of natural fibers in CaCO3/HDPE composite.

To minimize the brittleness of polylactic acid (PLA), the epoxidized rubber seed oils (ERO) or epoxidized ester rubber seed oils (EERO) are blended with PLA. The mechanical properties of ERO bioblend are higher than that of EERO bioblend and significantly improved compared to that of the PLA sample. Elongation at break is increased by 9.1 times, and impact strength and tensile toughness improved by 139% and 1370%, respectively. The morphological study showed the microdroplets of epoxidized oils distributed in the ERO bioblend are much smaller than those in the EERO bioblend. This means that the ERO is better compatible with PLA, and both ERO and EERO are partially miscible with PLA. This compatibility is confirmed by the decrease in the glass transition temperature, T g , from 65.7 to 60.5°C. The TGA analysis shows a sharp increase in an initial decomposition temperature (from 261.8 to 311.9°C) meaning an improvement in thermal properties. The NMR analysis proves that the epoxidized vegetable oils are linked to PLA chains, so both the melt flow index and an acid value of ERO or EERO bioblend decrease while the thermal stability is improved. The NMR peak area of some signals shows that the ERO is more attached to PLA, proving better compatibility of ERO with PLA, resulting in higher mechanical properties of ERO bioblend. The plasticizing effect of plasticizers is not dependent on the oxygen-oxirane content of the epoxidized oil but is strongly influenced by the acid value. Overall results show that both ERO and EERO can be used as a biodegradable, renewable plasticizer to replace petroleum-based plasticizers for PLA. In addition, the successful modification of PLA by using ERO or EERO promotes the use of this polymer as a potential material for researchers working on PLA applications.

To develop filled polymer compositions based on polypropylene with different contents of calcite concentrate as a filler and the newest polyolefin elastomer as a modifier; to define the influence of the compositions on their rheological and physico-mechanical properties for production injection molded goods. The values of viscosity, melt flow index, tensile strength, elongation, and impact strength and frost resistance of the compositions depending on their composition are determined by standard methods. The influence of calcite concentrate as a filler and polyolefin elastomer as a modifier on the rheological and mechanical properties of compositions has been determined. With an increase in the amount of filler the physical and mechanical properties of the filled compositions are reduce that is offset by introducing the newest polyolefin elastomer as a modifier in amount of 5 wt. %. Addition of 5 wt. % of polyolefin elastomer in the filled composition gives them frost resistance, wherein the impact strength is higher than for compositions without the modifier even after freezing for 30 days at -18°С. It has been determined that adding of the filler does not increase the viscosity of the compositions, which contradicts the traditional behavior of filled systems. The addition of 5 wt. % of polyolefin elastomer to the filled compositions with calcite concentrate up to 20 wt.% does not change the tensile strength of the compositions which is 24 MPa, but increases elongation by 2 times, impact strength by an average of 8,5 % and frost resistance after freezing compositions at -18 °C for 30 days by an average of 12,6 %. The research results of rheological and physic-mechanical properties allow choosing the rational composition to achieve the desired characteristics of the polymer material for production goods by injection molding. Melt flow index of the compositions increases with increasing amount of filler to 50 wt. %. which does not increase the production costs of the injection molding process in comparison with unfilled compositions.

In this research, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was compounded with rice husk/high density polyethylene (HDPE) and kenaf/HDPE composite at different filler loadings to produce hybrid composites. Melt flow index (MFI) and mechanical properties of hybrid composite was investigated. From the test results, the addition of CaCO3 filler had decreased melt flow index (MFI) on both composites. In terms of mechanical properties, tensile strength, elongation at break and impact strength decreased, whereas Youngs Modulus increased with the increase of CaCO3 in both kenaf/HDPE and rice husk/HDPE composites. Impact strength of unfilled rice husk/HDPE composite was lower than unfilled kenaf/HDPE composite, however impact strength of CaCO3/rice husk/HDPE hybrid composite were found to have slightly higher than CaCO3/kenaf/HDPE hybrid composite with addition of 10% and 20% of CaCO3.

A poly(ε-caprolactone-co-L-lactide) copolyester was synthesized and employed to toughen poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) by reactive melt blending in the presence of an epoxy-based chain extender. The effects of chain extension reaction and copolyester content on properties of PLLA-based blends were studied. The chain extension reaction reduced crystallinity and melt flow index of PLLA/copolyester blends. Meanwhile the copolyester blending improved the crystallinities of the chain-extended PLLA up to 20 wt% copolyester. The phase compatibility between PLLA matrix and dispersed copolyester phases was enhanced by the chain extension reaction. The impact strength of chain-extended PLLA increased with the contents of copolyester and chain extender.

Polyoxymethylene/thermoplastic polyamide elastomer (POM/TPAE) blends were prepared through melt extrusion in an attempt to improve the toughness and electrical properties of POM. The TPAE used in the study had the permanent antistatic effect, and its brand was MV2080. Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer grafted maleic anhydride (ABS-g-MAH) was added while preparing the POM/TPAE blends to improve the compatibility between TPAE and POM. The effects of TPAE and ABS-g-MAH on the morphologies, melting crystallization, dynamic mechanical analysis, surface resistivity and mechanical properties were examined in detail with various techniques. It was found that after adding 15 phr MV2080 as the modifier, the distribution of MV2080 in the blends was presented as many continuous long strips, which can be called “antistatic networks.” When using ABS-g-MAH as a compatibilizer, the surface resistivity of the samples 5#, 6#, and 7# which all containing 15 phr MV2080 with the best antistatic properties reached 107 Ω, and the impact strength of the above samples was all increased by more than 66%.

Chemically reduced graphene (C- rGO) nanosheets were first prepared from graphene oxide (GO), and then the polypropylene (PP) composites synergistically reinforced–toughened by styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR), and C- rGO nanosheets were fabricated via melt blending. The mechanical properties of PP can be considerably improved by synergistically filling with C- rGO nanosheets and SBR, especially for the notched Izod impact strength (IS). The results from the X-ray diffraction, polarizing optical micrographs, scanning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimetric, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis measurements reveal that: (1) the β-phase crystal structure of the PP is formed when the C- rGO and SBR are synergistically filled with PP and its formation plays a role for the enhancement of the impact strength for PP/SBR/C- rGO composites; (2) the dispersion of the C- rGO and SBR in the PP/SBR/C- rGO composites is homogeneous, indicating that synergistic incorporating method decreases the aggregation of nanosheets and thus increases the sites for dissipation of shock for impact energy in the PP/SBR/C- rGO composites; and (3) the thermal analysis shows high thermal stability for the PP/SBR/C- rGO composites.

The main aim of this work was the investigation of the possibility of replacing the heavy metallic meshes applied onto the composite structure in airplanes for lightning strike protection with a thin film of Tuball single-wall carbon nanotubes in the form of ultra-light, conductive paper. The Tuball paper studied contained 75 wt% or 90 wt% of carbon nanotubes and was applied on the top of carbon fibre reinforced polymer before fabrication of flat panels. First, the electrical conductivity, impact resistance and thermo-mechanical properties of modified laminates were measured and compared with the reference values. Then, flat panels with selected Tuball paper, expanded copper foil and reference panels were fabricated for lightning strike tests. The effectiveness of lightning strike protection was evaluated by using the ultrasonic phased-array technique. It was found that the introduction of Tuball paper on the laminates surface improved both the surface and the volume electrical conductivity by 8800% and 300%, respectively. The impact resistance was tested in two directions, perpendicular and parallel to the carbon fibres, and the values increased by 9.8% and 44%, respectively. The dynamic thermo-mechanical analysis showed higher stiffness and a slight increase in glass transition temperature of the modified laminates. Ultrasonic investigation after lightning strike tests showed that the effectiveness of Tuball paper is comparable to expanded copper foil.

This work explores a novel blend of recycled polyethylene terephthalate/polyamide 11 (rPET/PA11). The blend of rPET/PA11 was introduced to enhance the mechanical properties of rPET at various ratios. The work’s main advantage was to utilize rPET in thermoplastic form for various applications. Three different ratios, i.e. 10, 20 and 30 wt.% of PA11 blend samples, were prepared using a twin-screw extruder and injection moulding machine. The mechanical properties were examined in terms of tensile, flexural and impact strength. The tensile strength of rPET was improved more than 50%, while the increase in tensile strain was observed 42.5% with the addition of 20 wt.% of PA11. The improved properties of the blend were also confirmed by the flexural strength of the blends. The flexural strength was increased from 27.9 MPa to 48 MPa with the addition of 30 wt.% PA11. The flexural strain of rPET was found to be 1.1%. However, with the addition of 10, 20 and 30 wt.% of PA11, the flexural strain was noticed as 1.7, 2.1, and 3.9% respectively. The impact strength of rPET/PA11 at 20 wt.% PA11 was upsurged from 110.53 to 147.12 J/m. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed a dispersed PA11 domain in a continuous rPET matrix morphology of the blends. This work practical implication would lead to utilization of rPET in automobile, packaging, and various industries.
