The association between maternal diet during pregnancy and allergy in offspring remains contentious. Here, we examined the association between maternal intake of vegetables and related nutrients during pregnancy and allergic diseases in offspring at one year of age. A cohort of 80,270 pregnant women enrolled in the Japan Environment and Children’s Study were asked to respond to a food frequency questionnaire during pregnancy and the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire at one year postpartum. The women were categorized into quintiles according to the energy-adjusted maternal intake of vegetables and related nutrients. Using the categorizations as exposure variables, the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were determined for the allergic outcomes, including asthma, wheeze, atopic dermatitis, eczema, and food allergy, in the offspring per quintile at one year of age. Of the 80,270 participants, 2,027 (2.5%), 15,617 (19.6%), 3,477 (4.3%), 14,929 (18.7%), 13,801 (17.2%), and 25,028 (31.3%) children experienced asthma, wheeze, atopic dermatitis, eczema, food allergy, and some form of allergic disease, respectively. The aORs of each quintile of maternal vegetable intake for all allergic outcomes were close to 1.0 compared to the lowest quintile. The lowest aOR was found in the association of maternal cruciferous vegetable intake with asthma (aOR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.70–0.96) and highest was found in the association of maternal total vegetable intake with atopic dermatitis (aOR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.04–1.31). The risk of allergic outcomes for the various nutrients related to vegetable consumption was close to 1.0. The maternal intake of vegetables and various related nutrients during pregnancy had little or no association with any of the allergic outcomes, including asthma, wheezing, atopic dermatitis, eczema, and food allergy, in offspring at one year.

Background. At present, due to high prevalence of allergic diseases which start in early childhood, the search for new prevention and treatment methods is in great demand. Aim. To study the effectiveness of the Russian-produced enterosorbent colloidal silicon dioxide in the treatment of patients with food allergies combined with atopic dermatitis and gastrointestinal manifestations. Materials and methods. An open, randomized, comparative clinical study of the enterosorbent (colloidal silicon dioxide) effectiveness has been conducted in parallel groups of infants and preschool children with food allergy skin and gastrointestinal manifestations. The main groups (1 67 children with food allergies and atopic dermatitis skin manifestations, 3 60 children with food allergies and gastrointestinal manifestations) received, along with basic medication, colloidal silicon dioxide enterosorbent day at an age-specific dosage twice a for 1014 days. Control groups (2 60 children with food allergies and atopic dermatitis skin manifestations, 4 60 children with food allergies and gastrointestinal manifestations) did not receive enterosorbent. All children underwent a clinical, functional and laboratory status assessment, including medical records analysis, a pediatrician clinical examination, narrow specialists (allergist-immunologist) examination, laboratory and instrumental research. The treatment effectiveness was being evaluated on the 14th day after the initiation of therapy and after 30 days. The therapy effectiveness was assessed based on regression of skin syndrome clinical and gastrointestinal manifestations, intoxication syndrome and laboratory parameters (IgE, hemogram eosinophilia duration). The study was conducted from 2017 to 2019. On the basis of LLC Modern Medical Technologies Clinics (Kemerovo). Results. Therapy with colloidal silicon dioxide increases the significance of food allergy skin manifestations positive dynamics, which makes it possible to reduce the volume of medication and the duration of topical glucocorticosteroids use to 5.340.35 days, in the compared group 10.520.85 days (p=0.002). All patients with food allergy combined with atopic dermatitis in the main and control groups noted positive clinical dynamics, appearing as decrease in the skin inflammatory reaction area and intensity. However, the of colloidal silicon dioxide use accelerates skin syndrome condition normalization significantly (group 1 skin syndrome persisted in 2.92.0% after 14 days, in group 2 18.34.9%; p=0.003). Colloidal silicon dioxide use accelerates humoral immunity state normalization (IgE) and peripheral blood parameters (hemogram eosinophilia). Colloidal silicon dioxide therapy accelerates food allergy gastrointestinal manifestations positive dynamics in children. Two weeks after the sorbent therapy started, gastrointestinal tract lesions symptoms frequency is less than in patients in the compared group. Diarrhea frequency before treatment started was 48.36.5%, 45.06.4% in the compared groups. After two weeks it decreased to 6.73.2% with the Polisorb therapy and to 16.64.8% in the compared group (p=0.003). Abdominal pain was noted by patients of both groups equally often before the study began. After 2 weeks, abdominal pain was noted by ten percent 10.03.9% of patients taking colloidal silicon dioxide and 25.05.6% of the compared group (p=0.009). Conclusion. Taking into account the composition of the colloidal silicon dioxide, it makes sense to include this medication in childrens food allergies complex treatment starting from infancy, which contributes to a more rapid relief of gastrointestinal system damage symptoms, life quality improvement for children and their parents, and decrease in medication load. When using colloidal silicon dioxide in children with food allergies, a faster dynamics of disease symptoms relief (p=0.003) was noted, which allows us to conclude that it is highly effective in the treatment of allergic diseases associated with food sensitization.

Maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation may affect the propensity of the child to develop an allergy. The aim was to assess and compare the dietary intake of pregnant and lactating women, validate it with biomarkers, and to relate these data to physician-diagnosed allergy in the offspring at 12 months of age. Maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation was assessed by repeated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires in a prospective Swedish birth cohort (n = 508). Fatty acid proportions were measured in maternal breast milk and erythrocytes. Allergy was diagnosed at 12 months of age by a pediatrician specialized in allergy. An increased maternal intake of cow’s milk during lactation, confirmed with biomarkers (fatty acids C15:0 and C17:0) in the maternal blood and breast milk, was associated with a lower prevalence of physician-diagnosed food allergy by 12 months of age. Intake of fruit and berries during lactation was associated with a higher prevalence of atopic eczema at 12 months of age. Our results suggest that maternal diet modulates the infant’s immune system, thereby influencing subsequent allergy development.

Abstract Fat is one of the six types of taste. Perceived taste intensity could affect the preference for a food and whether or not it is consumed. Cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) translocates fatty acids on the cellular membrane and is involved in the oral fat-sensing mechanism. Therefore, genetic variation rs1761667 in CD36 is known to be associated with the perception of fat taste and, hence, its dietary intake. This study examined whether CD36 rs1527479 T>C, a proxy of rs1761667, is associated with fat intake and related dietary behaviour in Koreans. Using the data of the Ansan/Ansung Study, a part of the Korean Genome Epidemiology Study, the association of rs1527479 with the intake of macronutrients, including fat and selected foods, and fat-related dietary behaviours were investigated in 3194 males and 3425 females grouped by their degree of obesity. The findings suggested that rs1527479 did not have a meaningful effect on the intake of fat or other macronutrients or on the selection of food among non-obese females and males. However, in males with obesity, the genetic variation showed a significant association with vegetable intake. Obese males with the mutant CC genotype had substantially lower cruciferous vegetable consumption (adjusted P = 0·0015) than individuals with the TT and CT genotypes. Rs1527479 had no significant effect on the frequency of consuming fried foods or commonly used types of seasoning and cooking oils. In conclusion, CD36 genetic variation was associated with the intake of cruciferous vegetables but not fat intake in obese Korean males.

AbstractObjectiveThe effect on individual rankings and total intakes of nutrients of correcting total fruit and vegetable frequencies from a long food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) using the responses to two summary questions was examined in a group of women.MethodsThe performance of a self-administered FFQ in ranking individual levels of intake and estimating absolute levels of nutrient and energy intake was compared with the performance of the questionnaire when it was corrected for fruit and vegetable intake reported using the Block summary questions.SubjectsThe study population included 123 women, aged between 18 and 54 years, who were recruited from the Family Planning Association Colposcopy Clinic in Sydney.ResultsSubstantial and significant differences (P<0.001) were found in fruit and vegetable intakes between the FFQ and the summary questions. Intake frequency by the FFQ was more than double that by the summary questions. When the FFQ was corrected for fruit and vegetable intakes using the summary questions, the intakes of beta-carotene, vitamins A and C, and dietary fibre were more than 20% lower (P<0.001) than the uncorrected results. However, this had little effect on ranking individuals. This study also examined seasonal differences in vegetable intakes and differences in nutrient intakes when either summer or winter vegetable consumption was substituted for seasonal vegetable intake in the FFQ. Although there were seasonal differences for some foods, the substitution had little effect on intake of nutrients.ConclusionThese results indicate that important differences in intakes are observed when two methods, which appear to yield the same results, are used. Further work is needed to determine which, if either, of the two methods yields intakes that can be compared quantitatively with national references for assessing the adequacy of population intakes.

Atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS) is one of the most common chronic allergic diseases in children. Among the allergens found to be relevant in AEDS, aeroallergens and food allergens are the most important. The exposure of these patients to their relevant protein allergens can trigger an exacerbation or maintain the disease. AEDS is frequently associated with food allergy, which complicates the management in approximately 40% of these children. Atopy patch test (APT) can help in detecting food allergies in children with AEDS. The earliest publication on patch testing in eczema was described in 1937 by Rostenberg, but the first controlled clinical trial was provided by Mitchell in 1982. APT with food allergens were introduced into clinical use in 1996 by the group of Isolauri. APT test is performed epicutaneously with typical immediate-type allergens (aeroallergens or foods). As a number of apparently minor test modifications greatly influence the sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility of the APT, the European Task Force on Atopic Dermatitis (ETFAD) has developed a standardized APT technique. APT has developed into a valuable additional tool in the diagnostic work-up of food allergy in infants and children with atopic dermatitis.

Introduction. Types of the course of allergic diseases may be related to cytokine profile. Determination of the spectrum of cytokines to evaluate the mechanisms of allergic inflammatory process that improves the efficiency of management of patients with allergic diseases was performed. Background. To establish the features of cytokine profile in children with multiple food protein intolerance. Methods. 39 children with atopic dermatitis and food allergy were included in the openlabel study, 18 of whom had multiple food protein intolerance. All patients were examined with enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) to determine the concentration of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-17, IL-22, eotaxin, eotaxin2, TGF-β. Results. In children with multiple food protein intolerance the concentration of TGF-β was increased in comparison with the group of children without multiple food intolerances Me 14,04 [11,3; 18,0] against 10,3 [4,8; 12, 8] pg/ml, respectively, p = 0,038. The level of other cytokines had no difference. Conclusion. Increased concentration of TGF-β in patients with multiple food protein intolerance may be an additional indication for the amino acid formulas.

Nas últimas décadas, observou-se o aumento progressivo das doenças alérgicas e assim, novas alternativas preventivas e de tratamento têm sido buscadas. Neste âmbito, é notável o crescimento no número de pesquisas na comunidade científica destinadas a investigar se a suplementação com substancias probióticas seria capaz de reduzir a incidência e severidade das atopias clínicas, bem como seus possíveis efeitos como estratégia de tratamento. O artigo consistiu em uma revisão bibliográfica com o objetivo de analisar a eficácia dos probióticos nas atopias clínicas como asma, rinite alérgica, dermatite atópica e alergia alimentar, bem como seus efeitos. Apesar de relatos consistentes apontarem que cepas probióticas específicas quando usadas em  determinados casos produzem melhora clínica significante, ainda se faz de extrema importância novos estudos, visando verificar e esclarecer precisamente os demais efeitos produzidos, incluindo efeitos colaterais, determinação de uma dosagem adequada, bem como a população alvo.Palavras-chave: probióticos, alergia, hipersensibilidade. ABSTRACTIn the last decades, it was observed a progressive increase of allergic diseases and consequently researchers are looking for new preventive and alternative treatments. In this context it is remarkable the growth of researcher in the scientific community,aiming to investigate whether the supplementation with probiotics substances would be able to reduce the incidence and severity of clinical atopy and its effects as a treatment strategy. The study consisted of a literature review with the aim of evaluate the clinical efficacy of probiotics in atopic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis and food allergy as well as its effects.Despite consistent reports suggest that specific probiotic strains when used in certain cases produce significant clinical improvement, it is still extremely important to have new studies in order to verify and clarify precisely other effects, including side effects, the appropriate dosage as well as the target population.Keywords: probiotics, allergy, hypersensitivity.

Background. To study the prevalence of symptoms of allergic diseases among school students of the Grodno region (Republic of Belarus). Methods. Researches conducted a questioning method by means of the Russian version of the standardized «International Study of Asthma and Allergy in Childhood» program (ISAAC). Results. Results of questioning of 1787 schoolchildren showed that the wheezing, within the last 12 months was registered in 9,3% of children of the first classes (DI: 7,5-11,5%) and in 9,1% of children of the eighth classes (DI: 7,5-11%), rhinitis symptoms without cold or flu - in 29,7% of children of the first classes (DI: 26,7-32,85%) and in 47,2% of children of the eighth classes (DI: 44-50%), symptoms of atopic dermatitis - in 8,2% of children of the first classes (DI: 6,6-10%) and in 1,9% of children of the eighth classes (DI: 1-2,97%). Frequency of clinically verified diagnosis of bronchial asthma at schoolchildren at the age of 6-7 y.o. and at the age of 13-14 y.o. was 3,9% (DI: 3-4,9%), allergic rhinitis - 5,6% (DI: 4,6-6,8%), atopic dermatitis - 6,2% (DI: 5,2-7%). Conclusion. Results of the study confirm the need of carrying out further epidemiological researches for the purpose of earlier identification of patients with allergic diseases.
