The theoretical model of Functional (Discourse) Grammar initially developed by Simón C. Dik (1997a/b) stresses the relevance of implicational hierarchies in grammatical operations and claims that these hierarchies, although they present individual properties associated with intrinsic, functional and hierarchical constraints, may interact with each other to the extent that some of them could be grouped and reformulated as a single hierarchy gathering properties of different nature. In this paper, we will explore these cases of conflation within the domain of the grammatical operation of Subject assignment in one particular language, viz. English, and will suggest new cases of overlap between some of these priority features which might be appropriate in a descriptive approach to Subject selection in the English language.

The article discusses the influence of Russian-English functional bilingualism of IT and tech specialists on the formation of translation norms in the corresponding field. The research is carried out within the framework of sociology of translation and descriptive approach in translation studies. It investigates the patterns in the usage of hybrid lexemes combining Russian and English graphemes, e.g. IoT-устройство (IoT-device), API-интерфейс (API-interface) and Open Source-приложение (open source application) in translations. Methodologically, the study resorts to the theoretical stance of sociology of translation, namely the concepts of translation norm, represented in the works by G. Toury and A. Chesterman, translator's habitus and the field of translation, as well as corpus-based methodology. It utilizes a comparable corpus of translated and non-translated articles published by Russian IT business magazines itWeek, Computerworld and Novosti Elektroniki (Electronics News) in 2017. Hybrids are shown to be more common in non-translated text, which can be viewed as an aspect of the expectancy norm. Qualitative study revealed the following patterns in hybrid usage in translation. Most of the hybrids used in translation are the direct result of the transfer of original English analytical structures. Hybrids are also used in translation as part of pragmatic positive interference, which shows the translator's reliance on the recipient's extensive background knowledge of the subject, as well as command of the English language. Interference, both positive and negative, is argued to be the aspect of the expectancy norm present in the field of technology-oriented media translation.

This study aimed at identifying the use of laissez-faire style in classroom management by teachers of learning disabilities in English language in the light of some variables. The study population consisted of all (60) teachers in the upper basic stage in Irbid Governorate. The study sample consisted of (30) male and female teachers. The study used the descriptive approach and developed a questionnaire as an instrument to collect data. The results of the study showed that there were statistically significant differences for the use of laissez-faire style due to the gender variable based on the calculated (t) value of (4.14), and the differences were in favor of males, as evidenced by their high mean score.  The mean score for the responses of males teachers was (2.14), and for female teachers (1,83).

<p>This study is conducted to investigate the application of needs analysis in developing EAP materials for business administration students in two Sudanese universities. The subjects are 2 head departments of English language. To collect data, the researcher uses interview and content analysis. The study adopts the descriptive approach. The data of the study is analyzed qualitatively. The findings show that most of the business administration EAP materials in Sudanese universities are not based on needs analysis and are not relevant to the students' learning and target situation needs. The drawbacks in EAP materials, in Sudanese universities, are due to the absence of needs analysis practice in the process of syllabi design. Therefore, the researcher recommends the application of needs analysis in the process of course design to assure designing courses that are relevant to the students' actual needs. The EAP courses which are taught in Sudanese universities should be tailored to the students' specific needs.</p>

This study aimed at exploring the level of cognitive flexibility of students with learning disabilities in the English language in Irbid Governorate and its relationship with the variables of gender and school grade. The study sample consisted of (380) male and female students in the elementary stage. The study used the descriptive approach and developed the cognitive flexibility scale as an instrument to collect data. The content validity and reliability of the instrument were ensured using the Cronbach Alpha and repetition methods. The results revealed statistically significant differences in the level of cognitive flexibility among those with learning disabilities due to the gender variable in favor of males and to the school grade variable in favor of the second primary grade.

Based on the 2013 curriculum 2016’s revision, there are subject materials that demand about local content in English subjects at the level of SMP Class VII. Teachers need many researches and practices integrating and implementating these subjects. Basically,  it needs to be done in-depth study in the form of content analysis. This research was conducted on content and learning English in SMP Negeri 5 Sigi. This study aims to find out 1) how many percentage of local content in English lesson material Class VII SMP in the curriculum 2013 revision 2016; 2) how to integrate local content in English subject matter in SMP Negeri 5 Sigi; 3) how the implementation of material with local content in English learning in SMP Negeri 5 Sigi, and; 4) how to integrate local content in effective and efficient English lessons in SMP Negeri 5 Sigi. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with the method of collecting document studies, interviews, and observation. The research results are 1) the proportion of local content that can be integrated into English language learning material SMP is 95%; 2) the integrity of local content in English learning materials in SMP Negeri 5 Sigi can be found in the lesson plan; 3) implementation of materials with local content in English learning attached to KTSP, Syllabus, lesson plan and learning resources enrichment book.

    The aim of the research was to study the study to identify the effect of the size of the classroom on the achievement of English language students after secondary school in Kuwait. The researcher used a descriptive approach. The tool was in a questionnaire to measure the degree of practice, which was applied to 50 post-secondary students in Kuwait. The main results of this study were: • English students receive more individual attention and interact more with the teacher. • Teachers have more flexibility to use different teaching methods in language proficiency. • Fewer students are less distracted to each other than a large group of students. • Teachers have more time to teach English because of fewer discipline problems. • English students are likely to participate in class and become more involved.

This study aims to analyze the Indonesian language syntactic interference on English Speaking Skills of English Language Students. The research subjects were students of semester 3 at a non-English language college in Garut. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with equivalent and distribution methods. Meanwhile, the corpus was obtained by using the listening technique (SBLC), recording and taking notes from students' conversation assignments about their past activities in the form of videos. The results showed that the syntactic interference in this study includes the inaccuracy of word forms that are influenced by the past, inaccurate subject-verb agreements, inaccuracies, absence of articles, sentence patterns that do not match S + V + O, inaccurate use of the words 'no' and 'not'.Keywords: interference, syntax, speaking skills

Abstract The aim of this paper is to show how the TAME system of A'ingae, a language isolate spoken in Colombia and Ecuador, can be captured within the theoretical framework of Functional Discourse Grammar. An important prediction in this theory is that the surface order of TAME expressions reflects the scope relations between them in their underlying representation. An initial analysis reveals that, with three exceptions, the A'ingae TAME system confirms this prediction. Closer inspection of the three exceptions, which concern basic illocution, evidentiality, and quantificational aspect, then reveals that on the one hand, the theoretical model has to be adapted, while on the other hand some of the A'ingae facts allow for an alternative interpretation.

In today’s globalized world the importance of English language is beyond discussion. The thrust and focus of all the existing English language teaching theories, approaches and methods is to enable teachers and learners attain optimum success in the teaching and learning of English language. In spite of using all these resources in teaching, English language learning seems a difficult task to be mastered by learners. The contemporary models of communicative competence show that there is much more to the learning of a language and that include the vital component of learners cultural knowledge and awareness. Hence, this article by means of a qualitative descriptive approach aims to explore two concepts: intelligence and experience, and their interconnectedness, which opens new avenues to the teaching of English language.
