This paper focuses on the use of web-based discourse by three Spanish undergraduate students in Computer Engineering. Key lexico-grammatical features in Computer English have been analysed by means of corpus linguistics techniques, for which word statistics and collocation functions in the WordSmith concordancer have been highly useful. The information was then used to compare the students' results. The students' reading skills have been evaluated in the documentation process of the three final projects, required prior to their graduation as engineers. Overall observations point to code-switching, re-wording, and key vocabulary identification as strategies that the students demonstrate to be able to operate with significantly after on-line reading. The students also rely more on Internet discourse as a main source of feedback for their projects and useful tool for work. Two of the projects have dealt with the design and use of interactive platforms for language learning (via two different approaches), while the third project has focused on the management of e-learning with the use of Squeak, a special language for programming. The assessment of the three students' reading / interpretation skills has taken place by means of written tasks and personal interviews.

This study investigates Japanese EFL learners’ attitudes and preferences towards textbooks and web-based materials in a blended learning context. Sixty-four undergraduate students of a two-semester English course were asked to complete a questionnaire, which was designed to measure their satisfaction with each type of learning material and their motivation and autonomy in learning English, especially in grammar practice. The results revealed that a greater number of students preferred web-based materials to paper-based ones. Additionally, the results of SEM analysis indicate that learner satisfaction with e-learning materials has a positive effect on their attitudes towards self-study. However, students who preferred textbooks appreciated their advantages, such as the ability to take handwritten notes and the ease of understanding grammar points with face-to-face feedback. Therefore, the findings suggest that a well-balanced blend of materials may meet a wide variety of learners’ needs and promote positive attitudes towards autonomous language learning. 本研究は、ブレンディッドラーニング(ブレンド型学習)環境での教科書とeラーニング教材使用に関する日本人英語学習者の考え方と好みを調査したものである。通年の英語科目を履修している大学生64名を対象に、それぞれの教材に対する満足度、英語学習、特に文法演習への動機づけ、及び自律性を測るアンケートを実施した。その結果、eラーニング教材を好む学生の数が教科書を好む学生の数を上回った。また、構造方程式モデリング(SEM)の分析結果から、eラーニング教材に対する満足度は学習者の自主学習にプラスの影響を及ぼすことが示唆された。しかし教科書を好む学生は、手書きで書き込みができること、教師からの対面でのフィードバックで文法項目が理解しやすいこと、といった教科書使用の利点を高く評価した。従って本研究の結果から、教材をバランスよく使用することで、学習者の多様なニーズに応えることができ、学習者の自律的な言語学習が促進される可能性があることが示唆された。

There have been great improvements in mobile technologies recently. In line with these developments, the use of mobile technologies in web based distance learning seems to be increasing day by day making learning possible via mobile devices. Both the continuous and rapid developments in mobile devices and the growing number of people with mobile phones render these technologies fruitful and actively used in many fields, including education worldwide, inclusive of our own country. Mobile learning is regarded as a reliable distant education tool for learners who wish to continue their education from outside the institutions. The study was conducted to measure the reactions of individuals to the developed mobile applications and give insight to them. The aim of this study is to identify undergraduate students’ use and attitudes of/towards mobile learning who are studying at Trakya University Kesan Yusuf Capraz School of Applied Disciplines. O objetivo desta investigação é estruturar um modelo que avalie a efetividade das estratégias de ensino (tradicional, online e hibrido) utilizadas para o desenvolvimento das competências dos estudantes de graduação em administração, observando o perfil do estudante e o estilo de aprendizagem. A aprendizagem online, baseada no e-learning, tem desempenhado um papel fundamental no ensino e aprendizagem, que se torna cada vez mais popular não apenas em diferentes níveis escolares, mas também em várias instituições de educação superior em todo o mundo (Nedungadi & Raman, 2012). Nesse contexto, a educação a distância emerge como uma oportunidade que pode ampliar as possibilidades de aprendizagem do estudante, implementando ensino totalmente a distância ou no modelo híbrido.Palavras-Chave: Modelos de aprendizagem, e-learning, tradicional, on-line, híbrido.Abstract:The objective of this research is to structure a model that evaluates the effectiveness of teaching strategies (traditional, online and hybrid) used for the development of Administration course undergraduate students’ skills, observing student’s profile and his/her learning style. Online learning, based on e-learning, has played a key role in teaching and learning, which is becoming increasingly popular not only at different levels of education but also in several higher education institutions around the world (Nedungadi & Raman, 2012). In this context, distance education emerges as an opportunity that can broaden students’ learning possibilities, implementing distance education or the hybrid model.

Web-based learning has become an important way to enhance learning and teaching, offering many learning opportunities. A limitation of current Web-based learning is the restricted ability of students to personalize and annotate the learning materials. Providing personalized tools and analyzing some types of learning behavior, such as students’ annotation, has attracted attention as a means to enhance Web-based learning. There has been a sharp increase in the volume and quality of electronic publishing on the web in the past few years. Many research journals are going on-line. The advantages of pelectronic publishing are obvious and enormous: instantaneous access to archives, paperless media and fast document search to name a few. However, annotation of documents in electronic form has been surprisingly underdeveloped. Existing word processing software offers some tools for electronic document annotation. But as of today, these annotation features are so modest and limited, that they lose out to the convenient common practice of working with paper versions of documents [1]. The results of a surveys conducted came as no surprise: the absolute majority of researchers and students prefer to print out an electronic paper before reading and annotating it. Our claim is that electronic annotations can not only be as convenient as their paper counterparts, but they are superior in terms of the additional advanced capabilities they can offer. This claim makes the basis of our Annotation Technology (AT). AT is a set of principles that form a foundation for development of advanced and successful electronic annotation systems.

With the rapid advance in Web and multimedia technologies, authoring various types of multimedia content and distributing them on the Web has been very popular for many years. These technologies are applied in e-learning extensively, such as from language learning (e.g., ESL) to professional domain knowledge (e.g., computer science). In contrast, e-learning systems focusing on art domains, especially for kids or teenagers, are few. This is a notable shortcoming, because from a technical viewpoint, current advances in multimedia technology via the Web promise this kind of application. On the other hand, compared with technologies needed for more general-purpose knowledge, cultivating children’s art through e-learning technology needs much more edutainment ingredients – it must be interesting and interactive and offer multimedia. Realizing this kind of e-learning is really a challenge, not only from a pedagogical viewpoint (the first ingredient) but also technical ones (the latter two ingredients).

Objective: To evaluate the impact of an e-learning online event, created for supporting resident’s training during the slowdown of surgical and clinical activities caused by COVID-19 pandemic. An overview of PubMed literature depicting the state of the art of urology residency in the COVID-19 era was performed as well, to contextualize the issue. Methods: An online learning event for residents was set up at the beginning of the pandemic; the faculty consisted of experts in urology who provided on-line lectures and videos on surgical anatomy, procedures, updates in guidelines, technology, training. The audience was composed of 30–500 attendees from Italy, USA, India and Belgium. A questionnaire to analyze relevance, satisfaction and popularity of the lessons was mailed to 30 local residents. Results and limitations: Almost all residents defined the web environment suitable to achieve the learning outcomes; the method, the number and the competence of the faculty were appropriate/excellent. Most of the younger residents (81.8%) stated their surgical knowledge would improve after the course; 72.7% declared they would take advantage into routine inpatients clinical activity. Nineteen more expert residents agreed that the course would improve their surgical knowledge and enhance their practical skills; almost all stated that the initiative would change their outpatients and inpatients practice. Overall, 44 articles available in PubMed have addressed the concern of urological learning and training during the pandemic from different standpoints; four of them considered residents’ general perception towards web-based learning programs. Conclusions: The paper confirms residents’ satisfaction with e-learning methods and, to our knowledge, is the first one focusing on a specific event promptly settled up at the beginning of the outbreak. Web-based educational experience developed during the pandemic may represent the very basis for the implementation of prospective on-site training and overall scientific update of future urologists.

Efforts have been made by language educators and researchers to use computer technology to assist L2 learners’ growth in either linguistic or intercultural competence. Nonetheless, web-based environments devoted to developing both types of competences in tandem are new and experimental. The purpose of this project, which involves the collaboration of EFL educators and computer engineers in Taiwan, is to establish an innovative web-based environment to support students in tertiary levels to develop both types of competences. This web-based EFL learning environment experiments with a few main features: (1) instead of reading articles about a foreign culture, the users of this website read articles about their native culture; (2) two on-line computer-based support tools, a bilingual concordancer and a dictionary, are made available to provide students with contextual supports for language learning; and (3) discussion boards are provided for intercultural communication. The web-based learning environment contains several instructional units. While working on a unit, students read an article and then answer comprehension and vocabulary questions. After reading, students share their responses to the articles with intercultural conversation partners via online forums. To evaluate the effectiveness of the learning environment, the researcher recruited a group of Taiwanese university students to test-use the system. Frequencies of the uses of the two e-referencing tools were calculated. The students’ responses to a questionnaire were examined and informal interviews with the students were conducted. Finally, the students’ forum entries were analyzed. The findings revealed initial interest in using e-referencing tools but a dramatic decrease in use after the first few units had been completed. The students used the concordancer as a link to extensive reading materials and suggested adding pronunciation tools to the dictionary. Questionnaire findings showed that students were generally satisfied with the design of the web-based learning environment. An analysis of the students’ forum entries revealed increases in the length and complexity of sentences in their writings, as well as reductions in grammatical errors, as more units were completed. As for intercultural learning, the content analysis of the forum entries demonstrated different types of intercultural competences. Based on the findings, some implications for revision of the virtual environment to enable more effective learning of English as a foreign language and greater development of intercultural competence are drawn.

The role of reading in the process of formation of communicative competence was analyzed. The essence of the concept of competence in reading was defined. The main factors influencing the effectiveness of formation of reading skills in English were defined (the features of perception of written texts – time spent on text processing and length of the text; psychophysiological and individual age features of the students – visual perception of the text, the features of mental operations – ability to analyze and make the conclusions, memory, in particular, visual, attention, intelligence, ability to use the experience of reading in the native language, motivation, the presence of cognitive interest, the ability to apply different reading strategies, etc.; the characteristics of the text – authentic, semi-authentic, adapted texts, compliance with cognitive interests, age and level of language proficiency of the students, etc.). Different classifications of types of reading and their application at different stages of English language learning were analyzed (by the target: educational and introductory search; by the method of content disclosure: analytical and synthetic; by the participation of the native language: translated and non-translated; by the nature of the implementation of the semantic side of perception and processing of the text: reading with incomplete understanding and reading with full understanding; by the nature of the organization of activity: prepared with the removed difficulties – training and unprepared without previously removed difficulties – control; depending on the length: extensive and intensive; by the fact of relation to the educational process: educational and real; by the way of using a bilingual dictionary: reading with or without a dictionary; by the place of organization of reading: classwork or homework). The features of different reading strategies were analyzed (predicting, monitoring, confirming, connecting, questioning, skimming, scanning, distinguishing, using context clues, paraphrasing or summarizing, visualizing). The features of different stages of learning to read were described (pre-reading, while-reading, after-reading). The requirements for the texts for reading in English were generalized. The levels of comprehension of the texts and typical tasks appropriate for each level was given (fragmentary understanding, general understanding, full understanding, critical understanding).

The SRoL Web-based spoken language repository and tool collection includes thousands of voice recordings grouped on sections like "Basic sounds of the Romanian language", "Emotional voices", "Specific language processes", "Pathological voices", "Comparison of natural and synthetic speech", "Gnathophonics and gnathosonics". The recordings are annotated and documented according to proprietary methodology and protocols. Moreover, we included on the site extended documentation on the Romanian language, on speech technology, and on tools, produced by the SRoL team, for voice analysis. The resources are a part of the CLARIN European Network for Language Resources. The resources and tools are useful in virtual learning for phonetics of the Romanian language, speech technology, and medical subjects related to voice. We report on several applications in language learning and voice technology classes. Here, we emphasize the utilization of the SRoL resources in education for medicine and speech rehabilitation.
