Research honours degrees provide potential pathways into Masters and Doctorate degrees. Essential to their success is that they provide a sound grounding for novice researchers without taxing supervisors unduly. Our case study is a Bachelor Health Science (BHSc) (Hons) degree at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, a postgraduate degree aimed at attracting high-achieving BHSc graduates to study at an advanced level. This particular programme is not practice focused, but is a training ground for research. Therefore assessing whether the honours programme is a good investment for students meeting their needs and in preparing them for future study, and is a viable undertaking for often already over-committed supervisors is important. The overarching aim of this case study is to explore how to evaluate whether an honours programme provides a sound grounding for further research based postgraduate study. Graduates of the BHSc (Hons) programme (completed 2010 – 2014) and academics at the University of Auckland were invited to take part in online anonymous cross-sectional surveys. A total of 26 graduates and 23 academics completed the surveys. Overall graduates reported they were satisfied with the quality of the honours programme (73%; 19/26), found the programme to be intellectually stimulating (92%; 24/26), motivating (73%; 19/26) and overall worthwhile (85%; 22/26). Academics agreed that the programme was worthwhile (78%; 18/23), and that the programme adequately prepared graduates for future postgraduate study (65%; 15/23). This case study has found that the BHSc (Hons) programme is an effective launching pad for future postgraduate study; however, the findings have highlighted directions for future improvement in curriculum design. The study gave insights into the challenges, benefits and limitations perceived by academics involved in supervision and graduates completing the programme. Those designing postgraduate honours degrees as researcher training grounds may find this paper useful.

Background: Allergic rhinitis, the most common form of chronic rhinitis, can adversely affect quality of life. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in adolescents in South Africa has been estimated to be 38.5%, but there is a paucity of data from African countries on allergic rhinitis.Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in medical students in the Faculty of Health Science at the University of the Free State (UFS). Information was acquired on the effects that the condition had on participants with regard to symptoms, quality of life, disease management and treatment.Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. A self-administered anonymous questionnaire was distributed to all medical students registered with the Faculty of Health Sciences at UFS in 2016. The estimated population was 706 students.Results: The response rate was 62.6%. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis was 39.1%. The most common symptoms were rhinorrhoea (64.8%), repeated sneezing (64.3%) and nasal obstruction (58.5%). Symptoms were at their worst during August to October. Antihistamines had been used by 82.4% of participants to treat their symptoms in the previous 12 months, while 28.8% had used an intranasal steroid spray.Conclusion: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in medical students at UFS was 39.1%. Rhinorrhoea, sneezing and nasal obstruction were the most frequent and bothersome symptoms.

The purpose of this study was to identify the challenges faced in quality service delivery to Turkana Central Sub-county citizens of Turkana County. The study used cross-sectional survey design. The sample size selected for the study was 261.  Data was collected using questionnaires and interview guides. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and presented in tables and figures for ease interpretation. The major findings of the study show that devolved governance faces some challenges. For instance the devolved governance is faced with corruption, lack of transparency and accountability and inadequate funds. This adversely   affects quality service delivery to its citizens. The findings of the study would inspire policy makers at the county and national government level to come up with appropriate strategies to mitigate the challenges identified in order to improve the quality of services offered by the county governments.

Método: trata-se de estudo quantitativo, tipo transversal, aplicar-se-ão três questionários estruturados, autoaplicáveis para mensurar o nível da qualidade de vida e índice de depressão entre acadêmicos. Far-se-á a análise estatística descritiva, empregar-se-á o teste Liliefors e usar-se-ão o teste t de Student. Apresentar-se-ão os resultados em forma de figuras. Resultados esperados: realizar-se-á a correlação entre a qualidade de vida dos estudantes dos cursos de graduação da universidade e a incidência de fatores depressivos com o início da vida acadêmica. <p>Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a set of affective, behavioral and physical symptoms with appear in the luteal phase that could affect productivity and quality of life. PMS in adolescents could affect academic performance, such as a decreasing in concentration, failed the exam and absenteeism in the class. The objective was to evaluate the prevalence of PMS and determine its effect on quality of life among female health science students. This cross-sectional study was conducted between July-September 2017 on nursing female students of Health Science Collage “Karya Husada Semarang”, Central a Java, Indonesia. Students were enrolled 207 from first to fourth grade using WHOQOL–BREF form to determine quality of life. Inclusion criteria were having regular menstrual cycles (21-35 days) at least three period. Descriptive analysis and Mann Whitney tests were used for statistical analyses. The prevalence of PMS was found to be 60.8%. Physical health, psychological, social relationship, and environment domain were significantly higher in females with PMS (for each one P &lt; 0.05).</p>

Latar belakang: Salah satu penilaian keberhasilan Program Terapi Rumatan Metadon (PTRM) yang merupakanprogram rehabilitasi terhadap pengguna narkoba -- khususnya pengguna narkotika suntik -- adalah kualitashidup klien. Oleh karena itu perlu diidentifikasi beberapa faktor yang dominan mempengaruhinya. Metode: Penelitian dilakukan dengan desain potong lintang yang dilakukan di Puskesmas Kedung Badakdan Bogor Timur di Kota Bogor. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara dan pengisian kuesionerWHOQOL-BREF pada April-Juni 2018. Analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan regresi linier multivariabel. Hasil: Responden dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 62 orang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan rerata skor kualitashidup klien PTRM di Kota Bogor pada domain fisik sebesar 57,6; domain psikologis sebesar 57,5; domain sosialsebesar 63,6; dan domain lingkungan 63,9. Dibandingkan rerata skor populasi sehat di Indonesia, domain fisikdan psikologis lebih rendah daripada populasi tersebut, sedangkan domain psikologis tidak berbeda denganpopulasi tersebut. Adapun skor domain lingkungan lebih tinggi dibandingkan populasi sehat Indonesia. Faktoryang dominan dalam menentukan kualitas hidup pada domain fisik dan lingkungan adalah tingkat pendidikan,sedangkan domain psikologis adalah dosis metadon. Faktor yang dominan dalam menentukan kualitas hidupdomain sosial adalah adanya seseorang yang dapat diajak bicara. Kesimpulan: Semakin tinggi tingkat pendidikan klien, maka kualitas hidup klien pada seluruh domain akansemakin baik. Klien PTRM dengan tingkat pendidikan yang lebih rendah harus dipantau untuk meningkatkankualitas hidupnya. Penanganan klien dengan pendekatan individual dan dukungan sosial dari keluarga danteman diperlukan untuk meningkatkan motivasi serta kepatuhan klien dalam menjalani terapi metadon. The purpose of this study was to determine quality oflife among MMT patients. Methods: The cross sectional study was conducted in Kedung Badak Primary Health Care and BogorTimur in Bogor. Data were collected from interview and filling out WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire fromApril-June 2018. Analysis was performed using multiple linier regression. Results: Total subjects in this study was 62 subjects. The results showed mean scores for physical domainwas 57.6; psychological domain was 57.5; social domain was 63.6; and environmental domain was 63.9.Compared with Indonesian, MMT patient scores were higher in environmental domain and lower inphysical and psychological domain while social domain had no different with it. The dominant factor indetermining physical and environmental domain was level of education, while the psychological domainwas methadone dose, and the existence of someones to talk to was dominant factor for social domain. Conclusion: The higher level of education, will produce better quality of life in all domains. MMTpatients with lower level education must be monitored to improve their quality of life. It is suggested totreat patients based on individual approaches and support from family and friends is needed to motivateclients and adherence to the therapy. Student success was the motivation for evolving an individual project-based course into a project-centric curriculum. A one semester project was first extended across a sequence of three interrelated courses tied together through their focus on the success of small team projects that spanned those courses. This sequence was then targeted as the core of a redesign of the entire program curriculum focused on project and student success. Currently, the department is in the process of introducing the measurement of project success as a tool for assessment and control of the departments learning objectives. An overview of the design of this curriculum, lessons learned from developing it, and benefits of this type of curriculum in quality of student learning, community engagement, and reputation of the university, will be discussed.

The idea of student/staff partnership has become ubiquitous in the way universities market their institutional ethos and enshrines an idealised 'dialogic structure' within curriculum design. Which universitities are actually putting this into practice and allowing their students a significant role in the machinations of curriculum design and enhancement?This case study investigates the emerging co-operation between the University of Leeds Library, a team of Special Collections interns and the academic and student communities they reach out to. It suggests, in microcosm, a model for the co-creation of the curriculum which positions the student as co-creator, certainly, but also as mediator, tutor, mentor and communicator.The project case study adds insight into the fascinating hybrid identity that students can occupy within the contested territory of university-wide curriculum design, and explores the complex status and authority of students and tutors as they explore fresh relationships of opportunity and expertise.

This article provides an assessment of the pathways Librarians at the University of Guyana Library (UGL) explored to achieve continual learning for professional growth and self-development.The writers adopted a survey method to capture data from sixteen senior professionals from the University of Guyana Library. The findings revealed that while the University of Guyana Administration provided some avenues for professional growth and development for all professionals, there were some areas that required a more structured and equitable approach.  The findings indicated that much more can be done to facilitate growth and development for senior Library professionals, particularly in the field of Librarianship. From the discussions, the researchers concluded that in spite of the limited access to available resources, Library senior professionals actively pursued alternative avenues to enhance and advance learning. This was intended to acquire current knowledge and practice so that they may provide a higher quality of service to their clientele; further, their experience (in the process) will assist in enhancing their professional development and personal growth.

<p><strong>BACKGROUND</strong><strong> </strong><strong>&amp;</strong><strong> </strong><strong>AIMS:</strong> Measuring and analyzing of provided services times in Emergency Department is the way to improves quality of hospital services. The present study was conducted with aim measuring and analyzing patients waiting time indicators in Emergency Department in a general hospital in Iran.</p> <p><strong>MATERIAL</strong><strong> </strong><strong>&amp;</strong><strong> </strong><strong>METHODS:</strong> This cross-sectional, observational study was conducted during April to September 2012. The study population consisted of 72 patients admitted to the Emergency Department at Baharlo hospital. Data collection was carried out by workflow forms. Data were analyzed by t.<strong> </strong>test and ANOVA.</p> <p><strong>RESULTS:</strong> The average waiting time for patients from admission to enter the triage 5 minutes, the average time from triage to physician visit 6 minute and the average time between examinations to leave ED was estimated 180 minutes. The total waiting time in the emergency department was estimated at about 210 minutes. The significant<strong> </strong>correlation between marital status of patients (P=0.03), way of arrive to ED (P=0.02) and type of shift work (P=0.01) with studied time indicators were observed.</p> <p><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> According to results and comparing with similar studies, the average waiting time of patients admitted to the studied hospital is appropriate. Factors such as: Utilizing clinical governance system and attendance of resident Emergency Medicine Specialist have performed an important role in reducing of waiting times in ED.</p>
