The Fall armyworm worm (FAW) (Spodopterafrugiperda) is one of the important economic pests which goes on several field crops and causes serious damage. The aim of this study was to look for efficient, less cost and environmentally friend plant extract for controlling Fall armyworm worm in cereal crops. A Complete Randomized Block Design (CRBD) experiments with three replications were conducted in the laboratory to investigate the insecticidal effects of four plant extracts consisting of ethanolic extract of Neem (Azadirachta indica) seeds, Black pepper (Piper nigrum) seeds, Usher (Calotropis procera ) leaves and water extracts of Argel (Solenostemma argel) leaves on larvae of the Fall armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda). Newly emerged larvae of FAW were treated topically by 4 concentrations (10, 25, 50 and 75%) of each extract, and then the larval mortalities were calculated after 24, 48 and72 hrs. The results showed the highest concentrations (75%) of the three ethanolic extracts gave higher mortality percentages (100%) after 72 hrs of exposure, compared with other concentrations. Also, these were not significantly different from the recommended dose of the standard pesticide “Spinosad”. On the other hand, Argel water extract showed no effect on the (FAW) larvae. It is recommended that this experiment to be replicated under different environments.

The study’s objective was to determine the effect of the NO3-: NH4+ratio and types of support on NPK uptake and pepper plant growth in field conditions. The study used a completely randomized block design with three replications. The first factor was the type of support, being the deadwood and living supports in the form of Gliricidia sp. and Ceiba pentandra. The second factor was the ratio of N fertilizer forms, which were 100% NO3-, 100% NH4+, 50% NO3-:50% NH4+, 75% NO3-:25% NH4+ and 25% NO3-:75% NH4+. The results have demonstrated that the uptake of N, P, and K, as well as the plant growth, were not affected by the interaction of the N fertilizer form ratio with the types of support. In field conditions, the black pepper prefers the N fertilizer in the form of 50% NO3-:50% NH4+. The pepper plants that were given N fertilizer in a combination of 50% NO3-:50% NH4+ have demonstrated an N, P, and K uptake, and morphology and plant dry weight were higher than the ratio of other forms of N fertilizers.

The presence of new pest Spodoptera frugperda J. E. Smith has the potential to reduce corn production, so its existence needs to be controlled. The aim of this research is to obtain control techniques that could reduce the intensity of S. frugiperda pest’s attack. The research was conducted from June to October 2020. The experiment was designed in a randomized block design (RBD) with 9 replications and 3 treatments consisting of non-control (NP), PHT-biointensive (BI), and synthetic pesticides. In BI treatment, neem leaf extract (25 mL/plot) and Beauveria bassiana (6,25 g/plot) were used. Meanwhile, the PS treatment used deltametrin active ingredient (3,125 mL/plot). The volume of spray used was 1,25 L. The results showed that PS control techniques gave the best results in suppressing the intensity of fall armyworm S. frugiperda attacks (0,57%-7,04%) followed by BI treatment (0%-6,89%) and NP (0,97%-8,29%). The highest pest populations overall were found in NP treatment and the lowest in PS treatment. PS treatment provided the highest production result with a cob weight of 18,6 kg/plot (24,81 tons/ha), while BI treatment of 17,00 kg/plot (22,72 tons/ha) and NP of 15,44 kg/plot (20,64 tons/ha). The results of the correlation test between the intensity of pest attacks and production results showed that the higher the pest attack, the lower the harvest weight produced. Therefore, pest control by using synthetic pesticides made from active deltametrin is declared effective in suppressing the intensity of attacks and populations of fall armyworm S. frugiperda and able to provide high production results.   Keywords: corn, intensity of attack, Spodoptera frugiperda

Black pepper is a high nutrient-demanding crop; however, high application rates of the chemical fertilizer may give a negative impact on the environment and human health. Coapplication of the chemical fertilizer with biological fertilizers or biological agents is very important to support growth and high yield. This field experiment was carried out to study the effect of Trichoderma harzianum and foliar fertilization on the vegetative growth of black pepper. The study was conducted for 4 months. The research method was arranged in a factorial based on randomized block design (RBD). The first factor was the application of Trichoderma (50 g, 75 g, and 100 g per plant), and the second one was foliar fertilizers (1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, and without foliar fertilizer as the control). The treatments were repeated three times. The results showed that the application of both Trichoderma and foliar fertilizer affected the rate of shoot growth, the number of leaves, and the emergence time on black pepper seedlings under the nursery conditions. The application of 50 g/plant of Trichoderma and 1.5% of the foliar fertilizer resulted in 26% longer shoot length and 54% more leaves and accelerated the appearance of shoots 10 days earlier compared to without Trichoderma and the foliar fertilizer.

Most cereal crops are often damaged by lepidopterous insects. Of recent, fall armyworm, S. frugiperda (J.E. Smith) has resulted into yield and economic loss in many African and Asian countries. This reduces farmers’ income drastically and to overcome this damage, pesticides have been used which are not also environmentally friendly. Experiments were set up to collect data on the potential of three larval predators Orius strigicollis, Micromus angulatus, and Podisus maculiventris against S. frugiperda. The consumption of S. frugiperda larvae by three predators had highly significant effects (P≤0.05) on first, fourth, and sixth instars. No significant difference was reported between M. angulatus and O. strigicollis on second, third and fifth larval instars of S. frugiperda. O. strigicollis consumed more first larval instar (6.2±0.71) of S. frugiperda than M. angulatus (4.9±1.07) and P. maculiventris (4.2±0.74). However, P. maculiventris consumed more second to sixth larval instars of S. frugiperda than other two predators (O. strigicollis and M. angulatus). The predator P. maculiventris is recommended for controlling S. frugiperda in their second to sixth larval instars while O. strigicollis in the first larval instar. It can be also concluded that fourth larval instars of S. frugiperda is more suitable for its control using predator P. maculiventris as compared to other larval instars. This study therefore recommends predator Podisus maculiventris to be used in control of S. frugiperda under laboratory conditions.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to select cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum) tree progenies and individuals based on their agronomic traits, and, indirectly, to identify those adapted to an agroforestry system (AFS) environment in the Brazilian Amazon. For this purpose, 25 full-sib progenies were planted and tested in consortium with black pepper (Piper nigrum), banana (Musa spp.), and bacuri (Platonia insignis) trees. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design, with five replicates and three plants per plot, from 2005 to 2019. For the statistical analyses, the phenotypic averages for production and incidence of witches’ broom disease, evaluated during 11 harvests, were used. Superior progenies and individuals were identified using the mixed model methodology (REML/BLUP), which led to the selection of ten plants from five families with superior agronomic traits. Cupuaçu tree progenies 6, 36, 37, 49, and 52 are the ones that best adapt to the environment of a multispecies AFS in the Amazon region because of their agronomic traits under competitive conditions. Ten matrices show agronomic potential and indirect adaptation to the AFS and can be used as clonal cupuaçu cultivars in this environment.

A field experiment was conducted during winter, 2015-16 with the objective to investigate the effect of bread wheat cultivars (Abu-Ghraib3, Ibaa99, and Alfeteh) and seed priming 100, 100, 150 mg L-1 of benzyl adenine, salicylic acid, gibberellic acid (GA3), respectively, ethanolic extract of Salix Sp., water extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra and distilled water (control) on grain growth rate (GGR), effective filling period (EFP) and accelerating of physiological maturity. Randomized complete block design with three replicates was applied. GA3×Ibaa99 surpassed others in grain yield (7.432 tonne ha-1) when gave the highest grain weight (45.13 mg grain-1) and GGR (1.5 mg grain-1 day-1) with the fastest time to start and end EFP (5 and 34 days), which mean it reached to physiological maturity earlier. It can be conclude that seed priming led to accelerating the physiological maturity with increase grain yield through enhancing GGR and EFP in bread wheat.

<p>ABSTRAK<br />Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian hara<br />pada berbagai tingkat dan frekuensi pemberian air terhadap pertumbuhan<br />dan produksi lada perdu. Penelitian dilakukan di rumah atap Instalasi<br />Penelitian Cimanggu, Balai Penelitian Tanaman Rempah dan Obat, tahun<br />1996-1998. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan pot drum 40 liter.<br />Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak kelompok berukuran 6<br />tanaman/petak yang diulang 3 kali. Terdapat 2 faktor yang diuji yaitu<br />kombinasi dari tingkat dan frekuensi pemberian air dan faktor kedua<br />adalah takaran hara NPK Mg 12-12-17-2. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan<br />bahwa pemberian air 21 mm/2 hari, setara dengan curah hujan 3.780 mm<br />per tahun dengan pemberian pupuk 400 g NPKMg 12-12-17-2 per<br />tanaman per tahun menghasilkan pertumbuhan terbaik dan produksi<br />tertinggi yaitu 42,7 g/tanaman pada produksi tahun pertama dan 171,2<br />g/tanaman pada tahun produksi kedua. Ini berarti dengan jarak tanam<br />1,25 x 1,25 m telah mampu dicapai hasil lebih dari 1,09 ton/ha. The research was done at a shading house of<br />Cimanggu Experimental Farm, Indonesian Spices and Medicinal Crops<br />Research Institute in 1996 – 1998. Bushy pepper was planted in a<br />container of 40 litre in Cimanggu Instalation. The research used a<br />randomized block design with 3 replication, 6 plants/ plot. There were<br />two factors studied in the research i.e. the combination of the rate and<br />frequency of watering, and the rate of NPK Mg 12-12-7-2. The results<br />showed that watering at 21 ml in 2 days, equals to 3780 mm rainfall, with<br />the application of 400 g NPK Mg 12-12-17-2 per plant gave the best<br />growth performance and the highest yield of pepper 42.7 g/vine at the 1 st<br />year and 171.2 g/vine at the 2 nd year. It means that at the plant spacing of<br />1.25 x 1.25 m the plants can produce 1.09 tones/ha. The efficacy of plant powder to control foot rot on black pepper in field condition. One of the problems in cultivating black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) is foot rot caused by Phytophthora capsici Leonian (P. palmivora MF4), that could kill the plants in only few days especially during rainy season.  The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the efficacy of several plant powder to control the disease in semi-field condition.  The experiment was conducted at the experiment station located at the campus of the University of Lampung from May to October of 2000.  The semi-field condition was made by pushing a barrel into the soil to isolate the field soil as testing medium from the rest of the field soil.  The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with five replications and consisted of the rhizomes of Zingiber officinale, Alpinia galanga, and Kaempferia galanga, whole plant of Cymbopogon citratus and Elephantopus scaber, metalaxyl, and untreated control.  To prepare the plant powder, each material was cut into small pieces then dried in oven at 50o C for 4 days and then ground in a blender.  The powder was applied 3 days after inoculum infestation.  The powder and inoculum was mixed with soil to the depth of 12 cm so that the soil contained 2% each.  After one week, four plants were planted.  As additional bioindicator to detect infective inoculum, eight leaf portions were pressed into the soil so that half of the leaf was bellowed the soil line.  The plants were watered and observed daily.  To determine viable fungal propagules, soil sample was taken weekly for five weeks.  Soil assay was done with dilution technique using PDA supplemented with rosebengal.  The results of the observation show that the treatments did not influence significantly the disease intensity on leaf portions or the whole plants.  There were no significant differences on viable fungal propagules in soils received different treatments.

This research aims to know the effect of the concentration of shallot extract as well as the optimum concentration of shallots extracts on the growth of pepper plant. The method used in this study was Randomized Block Design with the treatment used is Eo (without concentration), El (the concentration of 100 ppm), E2 (concentration of 200 ppm), E3 (concentration of 300 ppm), E4 (concentration of 400 ppm). Observationvariablesin this study is the height of plant (cm), length of root (cm), the total number of roots, number of shoots, the weight of fresh residues tan-1, dry oven weight of residues. The results showed that no interaction between shallots extracts (Allium cepa L.) and the growth of pepper plant (Piper nigrum L.) which effect on the optimal growth of pepper plant.

Abstract Fall armyworm is a new pest in Indonesia that is currently of concern because of its widespread attack on corn production areas. FAW infestation in young plants will cause damage up to 90% and even corn plants can die. The study on the control of the fall armyworm (FAW) caused by Spodoptera frugiperda was conducted at the Bajeng Technology Research and Assessment Installation, Gowa, which took place from March-August 2020. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with 6 treatments repeated 4 times. The treatments consist of 4 synthetic insecticide treatments derived from 4 active ingredients (emamectin benzoate, spinoteram, carbofuran, chlorantraniliprole + tiamethoxam), one vegetable pesticide (nano pesticide; a.i. citronella, geraniol and citronellol) and one control treatment without pesticides. The treatment application was carried out 2 weeks after planting (WAP) then repeated every 2 weeks until the plants were 8 WAP. The treatment was carried out 2 times in the fegetative phase, 2 times in the generative phase. The plot area of each treatment is 5 x 5 m, the spacing is 70 x 20 cm. The results showed that the most effective insecticide to control FAW was Spinetoram followed by Emamectin Benzoate and Chlorantraniliprole. The average percentage of attacks in the spinetoram treatment was: 24.2% at 4 WAP, then 24.9% at 6 WAP, 29.1% and 37.1% at 10 WAP. The highest average yield was obtained in the insecticide treatment Spinetoram (10.7 t/ha) followed by Emamectin Benzoate (9.3 t/ha) and Chlorantraniliprole (8.9 t/ha), while the lowest yield was obtained in the control treatment (5.2 t/ha).
