Abstract Waterbirds are used as a bioindicator for analyzing wetland health because they are very sensitive to changes in ecosystems at the nutrient level and through exposure to pollutants. In the present study, bioaccumulation of trace elements (Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Co, Cd, and Mn) was investigated in Common Coot Fulica atra, Gadwall Anas strepera, and Eurasian Teal Anas crecca at Taunsa barrage and Chashma barrage located on Indus River, Punjab, Pakistan. Samples of water, sediments, and waterbirds tissues were collected during autumn 2018 and the spring of 2019. Metal concentrations were assessed by using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Thermo Scientific iCE 3000 Series). We found that the maximum bioaccumulation in birds was of cadmium. Order of metal accumulation was Cd > Pb > Zn > Co > Mn > Cu > Ni (Common Coot) and Cd > Pb > Zn > Co > Cu > Ni > Mn (Gadwall and Eurasian Teal) at Taunsa barrage. At Chashma barrage metal accumulation order was Cd > Zn > Pb > Co > Cu > Mn > Ni (Common Coot), Cd > Zn > Pb > Cu > Co > Ni > Mn (Gadwall) and Cd > Zn > Pb > Co > Cu > Ni > Mn (Eurasian Teal). A. crecca was the species in which the most of the trace elements (Cu, Ni, Pb, Co, and Mn) were accumulated at Taunsa barrage, while at Chashma barrage Zn, Pb, Cd, and Co accumulated in F. atra. Zn, Pb and Cd (avg. > 10) had a high bioaccumulation ratio and Co, Cu, Ni, and Mn (avg. < 10) had low bioaccumulation ratio. When tissues were compared for accumulation, the highest concentrations were observed in the intestine followed by gizzard, probably because of the feeding habits of these waterbirds.

The purpose of this study is to characterize native bee plants regarding their capacity to extract and accumulate trace elements from the soil and its consequences to the sanity of the produced pollen. The trace elements Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn were analyzed in soil, plants and bee pollen from Teresina region (PI), Brazil, by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Considering the studied plant species, Cu and Pb metals presented in the highest levels in the roots of B. platypetala with 47.35 and 32.71 μg.mL-1 and H. suaveolens with 39.69 and 17.06 μg.mL-1, respectively, while in the aerial parts Mn and Zn metals presented the highest levels in S. verticillata with 199.18 and 85.73 μg.mL-1. In the pollen, the levels of Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn vary from 5.44 to 11.75 μg.mL-1; 34.31 to 85.75 μg.mL-1; 13.98 to 18.19 μg.mL-1 and 50.19 to 90.35 μg.mL-1, respectively. These results indicate that in the apicultural pasture the translocation (from soil to pollen) of Mn and Zn was more effective than in case of Cu and Pb, therefore, the bee pollen can be used as food supplement without causing risks to human health.

Objectifs : Le présent travail porte sur l’évaluation de la bioaccumulation des métaux toxiques (Pb, Cu, Mn) des eaux, des sédiments, de deux espèces différentes de crabes Callinectes amnicola et Cardisoma armatum, et de légume Abelmoschus esculentus (famille des Malvaceae) et communément appelés Gombo consommés dans la basse vallée de l’Ouémé. Méthodologie et résultats : Pour ce faire, les teneurs de trois éléments traces métalliques (ETM) à savoir le manganèse (Mn), le cuivre (Cu) et le plomb (Pb) ont été recherchées dans les eaux, les sédiments de sable, le légume et les crabes à l'aide d'un spectrophotomètre d'absorption atomique à flamme dans 12 échantillons d’eau et sédiments puis dans 72 échantillons de crabes et 10 échantillons de légumes. Par la suite, une évaluation des risques sanitaires liés à la consommation de ces produits contaminés a été réalisée suivant une démarche standard simplifiée. Les résultats ont montré que tous les légumes Abelmoschus esculentus ont des teneurs en Mn et Cu dépassant la réglementation de l'OMS. Les résultats ont révélé également des concentrations en manganèse plus élevées dans les sédiments par rapport aux deux autres échantillons de crabe. Les crabes Cardisoma armatum accumulent plus le Cu et Pb que le crabe Callinectes amnicola. Les concentrations du plomb (Pb) et Mn sont en deçà des normes fixées par l'OMS. Par contre celles du cuivre et de manganèse dépassent largement la réglementation. Le facteur de bioconcentration (FBC) varie de 0,25 à 0,29 pour Mn, de 0,15 à 0,17 pour Cu et de 0,67 à 0,82 pour Pb. La présence de ces éléments traces métalliques dans les crabes, ne peut résulter que du phénomène de la biodisponibilité dans les sédiments. Conclusion et application des résultats : En conclusion, on peut retenir que l’évaluation de la bioaccumulation des métaux toxiques dans les aliments a montré que la consommation de crabes et légumes constitue un danger de santé publique pour la population de la basse vallée de l'Ouémé. Il serait indispensable d’attirer Elegbede Manou et al., J. Appl. Evaluation of the bioaccumulation of toxic metals (pb, cu, mn) in the consumed crab species Callinect amnicola and Cardisoma armatum with Abelmoschus esculentus vegetables in the low valley of Oueme (Benin, West Africa) ABSTRACT Objective : to evaluate the bioaccumulation of toxic metals (Pb, Cu, Mn) for two different species of crabs (i.e., Callinectes amnicola and Cardisoma armatum) and of vegetable Abelmoschus esculentus (family Malvaceae) commonly called Okra and consumed in the lower valley of the Ouémé. Methodology and results:To do this, the contents of three metallic trace elements (MTE) manganese (Mn), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) were sought in water, sand sediment, vegetables and crabs by using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer in 12 water and sediment samples and then in 72 crab samples. To search for lead, manganese and copper, an assessment of the health risks associated with the consumption of these contaminated products was carried out using a simplified standard approach. The results showed that all the Abelmoschus esculentus vegetables had Mn and Cu contents exceeding the WHO regulations. The results also revealed higher Mn concentrations in the sediment compared to the other two crab samples. Cardisoma armatum crabs accumulate more Cu and Pb than the Callinectes amnicola crab. The concentrations of lead (Pb) and Mn were below the standards set by the WHO. On the other hand, those of copper and manganese largely exceeded the regulations. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) varied from 0.25 to 0.29 for Mn, from 0.15 to 0.17 for Cu and from 0.67 to 0.82 for Pb. The presence of these metallic trace elements in crabs, can only result from the phenomenon of bioavailability in sediments. Conclusion and application of results: In conclusion, it can be remembered that the assessment of the bioaccumulation of toxic metals in food has shown that the consumption of crabs and vegetables constitutes a public health hazard for the population of the lower valley of the Ouémé. It would be essential to attract the attention of the populations so that they adopt a varied food ration. These results should be used as a decision-making tool for health authorities. The main recommendation resulting from the results is to carry out health surveillance in the lower valley of the Ouémé with regard to food. The Nangbéto hydroelectric dam lake, which is a spillway for agricultural input residues, urban and industrial effluents present in the Mono basin, is exposed to all forms of pollution. The aim of this work is to estimate the content of seven trace elements present in the sediments of the aforementioned lake in order to assess the ecological risk incurred by the aquatic biocenosis and therefore by man. Forty-two sediment samples (21 per season) are realized in different areas of the Lake. Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, Cr, As and Hg are measured out in the sediments by the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer in these pre-mineralized samples. The results show average contents varying from the lowest level 0.04 mg / kg for Hg to the highest 12.15 mg / kg for Cu in the rainy season and from 0.03 mg / kg for Hg and for As to 9.14 mg/kg for Cu in the dry season. All of these values are below Canadian sediment quality standards. The strongest average geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) are obtained for Pb with values less than 2. The mean values of the contamination factor (FC) are less than 1. The mean indices of contamination (Im) are less than 2, threshold d 'an onset of polymetallic contamination. The ecological risk (Ri) in relation to the contamination of the sediments of the Lake with trace elements is low in any season (Ri <40) and this implies a low risk of contamination of the biocenosis. However, the present study only deals with metallic trace elements. It does not take into account other pollutants, nor the potential "cocktail" effects between them. Additional work should therefore be continued in this direction to consolidate the low risk recorded for the biocenosis. Le Lac du barrage hydroélectrique de Nangbéto qui constitue un déversoir des résidus des intrants agricoles, des effluents urbains et industriels présent dans le bassin du Mono est exposé à toutes formes de pollution. Le but de ce travail est de quantifier les teneurs de sept (7) éléments traces dans les sédiments dudit Lac afin d’évaluer le risque écologique encouru par la biocénose aquatique et partant par l’homme.Quarante-deux (42) échantillons de sédiments (21 par saison) sont échantillonnés dans différentes zones du Lac. Le Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, Cr, As et Hg sont dosés dans les sédiments par le spectrophotomètre d’absorption atomique à flamme dans ces échantillons minéralisés. Les résultats montrent des teneurs moyennes variant de la plus faible teneur 0,04mg/kg pour le Hg à la plus forte (12,15mg/kg) pour le Cu en saison pluvieuse et de 0,03 mg/kg pour le Hg et pour l’As à la plus forte (9,14 mg/kg) pour le Cu en saison sèche. Toutes ces valeurs sont inférieures aux normes canadiennes de qualité des sédiments. Les plus forts indices de géoaccumulation (Igeo) moyens sont obtenus chez le Pb avec des valeurs inférieures à 2. Les valeurs moyennes de facteur de contamination (FC) sont inférieures à 1. Les indices moyens de contamination (Im) sont inférieurs à 2, seuil d’un début de contamination polymétallique. Le risque écologique (Ri) par rapport à la contamination des sédiments du Lac en éléments traces est faible en toute saison (Ri < 40) et cela implique un faible risque de contamination de la biocénose. La présente étude ne porte toutefois que sur les éléments traces métalliques. Elle ne tient compte ni des autres polluants, ni des effets "cocktail" potentiels entre eux. Un travail complémentaire devra donc être poursuivi dans ce sens pour consolider le faible risque enregistré pour la biocénose.

Red colored lipstick is the most widely used cosmetic product. Although lipstick gives a lot of social, psychological and therapeutic benefits, it may harm the consumers. Because some lipsticks contain a considerable amount of heavy metal especially lead. Lead is being used in lipstick mainly for the pigments required to obtain needed colors. Lead accumulates in the body over time and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, combined with lead in water and other sources, could add up to significant exposure levels. Therefore, this study was aimed to determine lead content in red colored lipsticks from market. This study was laboratorybased, analytical study by using 25 lipstick samples. Red colored lipsticks were bought from Mandalay Market by random sampling procedure and they were completely coded to avoid the bias. Then, lead content in coded samples was determined by Flame AAS according to International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guideline. Lead contents of 88% of the lipsticks samples were more than specified limit (20 ppm) of Food and Drug Administration, United States. All of them, lead content was highest in counterfeit lipsticks group. Among the tested lipstick samples, lipstick with lowest lead content was LE-RL 01 (15.74 ppm) and the lipstick with highest lead content was CF-RL 01(60.09 ppm). In conclusion, lead contents of red colored lipsticks (22 out of 25) from market samples were higher than allowable limit (20 ppm).

AbstractObjectivesTrace elements are essential in thyroid functioning as they incorporate into biologically important enzymes as cofactors. The placenta can either activate or inhibit the transfer of maternal trace elements to the unborn. An imbalance of maternal trace elements in pregnancy may affect both maternal and newborn thyroid function.MethodsBlood samples from 315 lactating mothers were collected in the first 48 h after delivery and evaluated for selenium (Se), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) and quadrupole inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Thyroid hormones and auto-antibodies (thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free T3 (fT3), free T3 (fT4), anti–thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO), and antithyroglobulin (anti-TG)) were analyzed in maternal blood using an electro-chemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). Between 48 and 72 postpartum hours, spot blood samples were used for newborn screening-TSH measurement. Correlation and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate the effect of maternal trace element levels on newborn screening-TSH levels.ResultsThe medians (min-max) of maternal Se (45.16 µg/L (21.28–79.04)), Cu (210.10 µg/dL (117.04–390.64)), Mn (2.11 µg/L (0.20–3.46)), and Zn (0.43 mg/L (0.24–0.66)) were determined. A positive correlation was detected between Zn and maternal TSH levels (r=0.12, p < 0.05). Newborn screening-TSH was significantly correlated with maternal Cu (r=0.14, p < 0.01). Similarly, Cu exhibited weak associations in clustering analysis while others shared common clusters with newborn-screening TSH.ConclusionsThere was no significant association between most of the maternal serum trace elements and maternal thyroid hormone parameters, with an only exception between maternal Zn and maternal serum TSH. Finally, the association between maternal serum Cu levels and newborn screening-TSH levels may highlight the importance of maternal Cu levels on the newborn thyroid health.

AbstractReaction-induced porosity is a key factor enabling protracted fluid-rock interactions in the Earth’s crust, promoting large-scale mineralogical changes during diagenesis, metamorphism, and ore formation. Here, we show experimentally that the presence of trace amounts of dissolved cerium increases the porosity of hematite (Fe2O3) formed via fluid-induced, redox-independent replacement of magnetite (Fe3O4), thereby increasing the efficiency of coupled magnetite replacement, fluid flow, and element mass transfer. Cerium acts as a catalyst affecting the nucleation and growth of hematite by modifying the Fe2+(aq)/Fe3+(aq) ratio at the reaction interface. Our results demonstrate that trace elements can enhance fluid-mediated mineral replacement reactions, ultimately controlling the kinetics, texture, and composition of fluid-mineral systems. Applied to some of the world’s most valuable orebodies, these results provide new insights into how early formation of extensive magnetite alteration may have preconditioned these ore systems for later enhanced metal accumulation, contributing to their sizes and metal endowment.

Tetrapleura tetraptera is widely cherished in African traditional homes because of its alleged therapeutic and nutritional properties. This present study aimed at determining the levels of vitamin A, C, E, and beta-carotene and trace element (Fe, Cu, Mn, Co, Se, and Zn) concentrations and their extractabilities in the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit (mixture of pulp and seeds) of T. tetraptera. The total trace element concentration of Fe, Cu, Co, Mn, and Zn and their extractabilities (%) were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS), whereas UV-VIS spectrophotometer was used to determine selenium concentration. The trace element content (mg/kg) based on dry weight in the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit was Fe (162.00 ± 7.14, 115.00 ± 12.00, and 154.00 ± 25.20, respectively), Zn (31.60 ± 4.77, 43.40 ± 5.29, and 41.50 ± 8.97, respectively), Cu (16.10 ± 4.98, 11.90 ± 8.40, and 17.20 ± 14.50, respectively), Mn (55.30 ± 2.41, 156.00 ± 10.20, and 122.00 ± 5.29, respectively), Co (38.10 ± 6.40, 21.10 ± 7.15, and 44.00 ± 14.90, respectively), and Se (1.49 ± 0.17, 2.43 ± 0.28, and 2.97 ± 0.27 μg/g, respectively). The mineral extractabilities (%) in the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit of T. tetraptera were established to be in the order Co > Zn > Fe > Cu > Se > Mn. Also, the chromatographic method (HPLC) was used to evaluate vitamin E concentration, and vitamin C and concentration of beta-carotene were calculated from the obtained concentration of vitamin A using a conversion factor by the titrimetric method. From the results of vitamin analysis, a significant difference (p<0.05) was observed among the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit for vitamin C and E. However, no significant difference (p>0.05) was perceived among these plant parts for vitamin A and beta-carotene. This study has therefore revealed that the pulp, seeds, and whole fruit of T. tetraptera contain varying concentrations of vitamins and trace elements and has given many vital insights on which part of T. tetraptera to consume, as concentrations of these nutrients differ in the discrete parts of the fruit.

Fly ash based effective solid base catalyst (KF/Al2O3/fly ash473, KF/Al2O3/fly ash673, and KF/Al2O3/fly ash873) was synthesized by loading KF over chemically and thermally activated fly ash. The chemical activation was done by treating fly ash with aluminum nitrate via precipitation method followed by thermal activation at 650°C to increase the alumina content in fly ash. The increased alumina content was confirmed by SEM-EDX analysis. The alumina enriched fly ash was then loaded with KF (10 wt%) and calcined at three different temperatures 473 K, 673 K and 873 K. The amount of loaded KF was monitored by XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, SEM-EDX, TEM and Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The catalytic activities of the catalysts were tested in the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of benzaldehyde and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde with 2′-hydroxyacetophenone to produce 2′-hydroxychalcone and 4-methoxy-2′-hydroxychalcone respectively. Higher conversion (83%) of benzaldehyde and (89%) of 4-methoxybenzaldehyde reveals that among these heterogeneous catalysts KF/Al2O3/fly ash673 is very active.

In this study, concentrations of Cd, Ni, Pb, and Cr were determined in tobacco, tobacco smoke-condensate, and cigarette ash for selected brands used in Pakistan. Smoking apparatus was designed for metal extraction from cigarette smoke. Samples were digested through microwave digester and then analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS). Higher concentration of Ni was detected in imported brands than the counterparts in the local brands. Pb levels were however higher in local brands while significant concentration of Cd was observed in both brands. For Cr, the level in tobacco of local brands was higher than their emitted smoke, whereas imported brands showed higher level in smoke than in tobacco. The cigarette ash retained 65 to 75% of the metal and about 25 to 30% went into the body. While this study revealed the serious requirement to standardize the manufacturing of tobacco products, more importantly is the urgent need for stronger enforcements to put in place to alert the general population about the hazardous effects of cigarettes and the health risks associated with these toxic metals.
