The attitudes that parents have towards learning are very significant for the forming of staudents' attitudes towards learning. The importance of this study lies in uncovering the extent to which students' own attitudes to learning depend on the level of parental involvement and parental demands, and the extent to which the insights obtained can be used as the basis for determining the manner in which parents should be engaged in and devote attention to their children's learning. In this paper, students' attitudes to learning were observed through two variables, namely students' learning goal orientation and their approaches to learning. The research sample consisted of 802 seventh-, eighthand ninth-grade primary school students. We started from the assumption that certain differences exist among the given variables. For the purposes of the study we used an instrument for measuring students' approach to learning, an instrument for measuring learning goal orientations and an instrument for measuring the level of demands and the level of support in the family environment. The reliability of the instruments was verified through Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The data obtained indicate that there is a statistically significant difference in learning goal orientations and approaches to learning among students depending on the level of parental demands and the level of parental involvement. Students whose parents provide high levels of support are more likely to have mastery goal orientation and an in-depth approach to learning, regardless of the level of demands. The pedagogical recommendation that can be made based on the results is that parents should provide their children with a high level of support for learning so that they can achieve the best possible results.

Purpose – In recent times, quality of graduates and their performance has been questioned. Students’ performance is an indicator of the kind of approach (deep or surface) that is taken. This study investigates the kind of undergraduates take in their learning processes.   Methodology – This quantitative survey used Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F). Sixty-three students participated in the study. Findings – Results showed no significant difference between the types of approach by gender, nationality, year of study, and major. However, the rank ordering of the mean value indicated that almost all the students who participated in the study did not possess a deep approach to learning. The Pearson’s r analysis revealed a weak negative statistical correlation between the deep and surface approaches to learning and weak positive statistical correlation between surface strategy and deep approach. However, a significant relationship between deep strategy and deep approach (r = .903**, p < .01) was found.   Significance – The lack of deep approach to learning among students can be attributed to factors such as the conditions of learning, professional capacity of teachers, and lack of instructional rigor in the program or coursework. It is imperative that emphasis is placed on using deep approaches to learning in the university courses so that deep learning experiences are created for students.

Introduction Past studies that have investigated approaches to study adopted by undergraduate students suggest that university learners enrolled in different year-levels in the same academic course may take up different approaches to study. No research to date has investigated how approaches to learning may differ among undergraduate occupational therapy students enrolled in their first, second, third or fourth year of tertiary level study. The aim of the current study was to examine the similarities and differences in approaches to study among four year-levels of occupational therapy students at one Australian university. Method First-, second-, third- and fourth-year undergraduate occupational therapy students ( N = 376; 92.8% response rate) completed the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students. A one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD were conducted to identify differences in approaches to study across the four year-level cohorts of students. Results Fourth-year students differed significantly from first-, second- and third-year students on the mean scores of the deep and strategic approaches to study ( F(3,372) = 6.958, p = .01 and F(3,372) = 8.366, p = .001 respectively) and on a number of the associated Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students subscales. There was no statistically significant difference across the four student cohorts on the mean score of the surface study approach. Conclusion Findings from the current study highlighted the difficulties in facilitating a deep approach to study and the prevalence of a surface study approach among undergraduate occupational therapy students.

This survey explored the learning approaches among deaf students at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Ghana. Data were gathered from 31 out of 41 undergraduate deaf students. Participants were randomly sampled from levels 100, 200, 300 and 400. Data were gathered through the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST, 1998). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Findings of the study suggest that participants preferred strategic approach to learning followed by the deep and surface approaches to learning in that order. The study recommended that further investigation be done using longitudinal study in various higher institutions in Ghana. Such a study should examine whether the approaches to learning among deaf students change over time as they go through their university education. The study recommended that in the teaching and learning process, lecturers in the Department of Special Education, UEW need to take into consideration the learning approaches (deep, surface, and strategic) employ to study and plan their teaching to meet such students and should teach each student since deaf students at the university.

The research aim of this paper was two-fold: to generate evidence that personality factors are linear predictors of the variable approaches to learning (a relevant cognitive-motivational variable of Educational Psychology); and to show that each type of learning approach differentially predicts positive or negative achievement emotions, in three learning situations: class time, study time, and testing. A total of 658 university students voluntarily completed validated questionnaires referring to these three variables. Using an ex post facto design, we conducted correlational analyses, regression analyses, and multiple structural predictions. The results showed that Conscientiousness is associated with and predicts a Deep Approach to learning, while also predicting positive achievement emotions. By contrast, Neuroticism is associated with and significantly predicts a Surface Approach to learning, as well as negative achievement emotions. There are important psychoeducational implications in the university context, both for prevention and for self-improvement, and for programs that offer psychoeducational guidance.
