The present investigation was carried out to determine the presence of biologically active components in the root methanolic extract of Gynochthodes ridsdalei using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Fresh root of G. ridsdalei collected from the forest areas of Ponmudi hills of Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala State, India was used for the study. The active principles with their retention time, peak area, molecular weight and molecular formula of the compounds were detected. The analysis revealed the presence of 26 components. The components were identified by comparing their retention time and peak area with that of literature available and by the interpretation of mass spectra.

Objective: The present research study was undertaken to determine the presence of bioactive components present in the methanolic stem extract of Gynochthodes ridsdalei using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis.Methods: the Fresh stem of Gynochthodes ridsdalei collected from the forest areas of Ponmudi region of Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala state, India was used. The mass spectrum GC-MS of the crude methanolic extract was estimated using the database of National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST).Results: The active principles with their retention time, peak area, molecular formula, molecular weight, structure and category of the compound were predicted. The analysis revealed the presence of 52 bioactive components. Most of the identified compounds are basically biological important. The components were identified by comparing their retention time and peak area with that of literature and by interpretation of mass spectra. The phyto components screened were of biological importance. Some of them were sterols, anthraquinones, vitamins etcConclusion: The result reveals the existence of various bioactive compounds and validates the earlier reports of therapeutic importance of the plant. Gynochthodes ridsdalei is recommended as a plant of phytochemical and pharmaceutical importance

Background: Seaweeds since ages are excellent source of biologically active ingredients. Several Asian countries have a strong tradition of using various seaweeds in herbal medicines preparations. These plants contain various phytochemical constituents having biological activities. Seaweeds are the source of phytochemicals namely agar-agar, carrageenan and algin, which are extensively used in various industries such as food, confectionary, textiles, pharmaceuticals, dairy and paper industries mostly as gelling, stabilizing and thickening agents. They are also used for human consumption, animal feed and as manure in several countries. Several Asian countries are using various seaweeds in traditional medicines.Methods: In the present study, the shade dried and methanolic extract of Cladophora glomerata, a marine green algae was subjected to preliminary phytochemical and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis(GC-MS) to identify the various bioactive components.Results: The methanolic extract of Cladophora glomerata revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, diterpenes and carbohydrates. The GC-MS analysis of the methanolic extract of Cladophora glomerata showed the presence of 42 different compounds. The major compounds were dibutyl phthalate (27.07%), hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester (9.58%), 1,2-benzene-di-carboxylic acid (8.11%), octatriacontyl trifluoroacetate (6.81%), cholesterol (6.66%).Conclusions: Thus, in the present study of Cladophora glomerata, phytochemical and GC-MS analysis provides an important novel information to support further ongoing studies to evaluate structure of bioactive compound and its pharmacological activities.

The investigation was carried out to determine the possible phytochemical constituents from aqueous, methanol and chloroform extracts of Turnera subulata leaf extracts. Among the phytochemical screening of these extracts, Methanolic extract showed that the leaf was rich in alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, saponins and quinones. The chemical composition of the plant leaf extract of T. subulata was investigated using Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectroscopy (Agilent-7890A GC instrument coupled with MS-5975) and NIST-MS library. GC-MS analysis of T. subulata plant leaf extract, revealed the existence of the GC-MS chromatogram of the major peaks presented in methanolic extract like Methyl 8,11,14-heptadecatrienoate (23.244%), Pentadecanoic acid, 14-methyl-,methyl ester (8.654%), n-Hexadecanoic acid (8.654%), 4H-Pyran4-one, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl (6.598%), 1b,4a-Epoxy-2H-cyclopenta[3,4] cyclopropa[8,9]cycloundec[1,2-b] oxiren-5(1aH)-one(5.400%), 3,7,11,15-Tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1- ol(5.400%), etc. From this study it is obvious that T. subulata leaf extract contains many biologically active compounds and also it gives a detailed insight about the phytochemical profile which could be exploited for the development of plant based drug.

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is an important cultivar of the Citrus genus which contains a number of nutrients beneficial to human health. Grapefruit peels are usually thrown away in this part of Nigeria. The research work investigated the bioactive components present in an indigenous citrus peel, grape (Citrus paradisi). Grape fruits were purchased from the fruits garden market in D-Line, Port-Harcourt metropolis and washed with ionized water and allowed to shade dry. The peel of the fruits were separated and subjected to cold extraction using 95% ethanol. The extracts obtained were further extracted in dichloromethane and subjected to GC/MS analysis for characterization of various bioactive components. The gas chromatographic model: 789A (GC) analysis was performed on an agilent technologies interfaced with mass selective detector model: 5975(MSD). The results revealed 25 bioactive components in grape peel with n-Hexadecanoic acid showing the highest concentration of 20.36% and retention time of 18.522min. Nootkatone was the lowest component in the grape peel with concentration 0.74% and retention time of 16.459min. Results shows that grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) has considerable potential as a source of natural bioactive components with different retention times. These fruits residues which otherwise regarded as waste hold promising potentials for medicinal therapy and value added food supplements.

Objective: To investigate the phytochemicals and GC-MS analysis of ethanol extracts of Silybum marianum. Methods: The air-dried leaves were powdered and subjected to selective sequential extraction using solvents of increasing polarity through percolation, ethanol to obtain an ethanolic extract. Then, each of the extracts was further subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results: Qualitative determination of the different biologically active compounds from crude extracts of Silybum marianum using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed different types of high and low molecular weight chemical entities with varying amounts present in each of the extracts. These chemical compounds are considered biologically and pharmacologically important. Conclusions: The study established the chemical composition and anticancer activity of the plant. Cyclamen was traditionally classified in the family Primulaceae, was reclassified in the subfamily Myrsinoideae within the family Primulaceae. The objective of this study was analysis of the secondary metabolite products. Bioactives are chemical compounds often referred to as secondary metabolites. Thirty eight bioactive compounds were identified in the methanolic extract of Cyclamen persicum. The identification of bioactive chemical compounds is based on the peak area, retention time molecular weight and molecular formula. The investigation was designed to trigger the complete chemical constituents present in the methanolic extract of leaves of hair knot plant; botanically known as Pergularia daemia belongs to the family of the Asclepiadaceae one of the endemic plants of Andhra Pradesh, India by Agilent Technologies Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry and components were well separated on HP-5 MS capillary column consisting of stationary phase of 5% phenyl 95% methylpolysiloxane. The resulted compounds were appropriate to the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) library and the study indicated the presence of different phytochemical compounds. A total of 51 compounds were recognized in the methanolic extract of Pergularia daemia leaves. Further, five new compounds were separated and four of biological importance viz. Pentadecane, Tetratriacontane, Dibutyl phthalate and Squalene were identified. The results of the importance of biologically active phytochemicals in the study recommend, P. daemiaas as a plant of phytopharmaceutical reputation.

Abstract Acacia nilotica is an important medicinal plant, found in Africa, Middle East, and Indian subcontinent. Every part of the plant possesses a wide array of biologically-active and therapeutically important compounds and have been used in traditional-system of medicine. We reported the antileishmanial activity of Acacia nilotica (A. nilotica) bark methanolic extract through in vitro assays and dissected the mechanism of its action through in silico studies. Bark methanolic extract exhibited anti-promastigote and anti-amastigote potency with IC50 value of 19.6 + 0.9037 µg/ml and 77.52 + 5.167 µg/ml respectively in time and dose dependent manner. It showed very low cytotoxicity having CC50 value of 432.7 + 7.71 µg/ml on human-macrophage cell line, THP-1. The major constituents identified by GC-MS analysis are 13-docosenoic acid (34.06%), lupeol(20.15 %), 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (9.92 %) and 6-octadecanoic acid (8.43 %) bind effectively with the potential drug-targets of Leishmania donovani (L. donovani ) including sterol 24-c-methytransferase (SMT), trypanothione reductase (TR), pteridine reductase (PTR1) and adenine phosphorybosyl transferase (APRT); suggest the possible mechanism of its antileishmanial action. The highest affinity with all these targets was shown by lupeol. The pharmacokinetic studies, predicted bioactivity scores and acute toxicity studies of major extract constituents support safe antileishmanial drug candidate. This study proved the antileishmanial potential of bark-methanolic extract A. nilotica and its mechanism of action through the inhibition of potential drug targets of L. donovani.

GC-MS is one of the best techniques to identify the constituents of volatile matter, long chain, branched chain hydrocarbons, alcohols acids, esters etc. The freshwater mussels Parreysia corrugata was analyzed using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry, while the mass spectra of the compounds found in the extract was matched with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) library. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed the presence of 26 compounds. The compounds were identified by comparing their retention time and peak area with that of literature and by interpretation of mass spectra. The first compound identified with less retention time (30.236 min) was 2,6-Difluorobenzoic acid, tridec-2-ynyl ester, whereas gamma.-Tocopherol was the last compound which took longest retention time (29.84min) to identify. Many of them are used in industry for various applications like flavor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, pesticide and cancer preventive.
