Preliminary phytochemical screening and GC-MS analysis of methanolic extract of Turnera subulata Smith (Passifloraceae)

The investigation was carried out to determine the possible phytochemical constituents from aqueous, methanol and chloroform extracts of Turnera subulata leaf extracts. Among the phytochemical screening of these extracts, Methanolic extract showed that the leaf was rich in alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, saponins and quinones. The chemical composition of the plant leaf extract of T. subulata was investigated using Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectroscopy (Agilent-7890A GC instrument coupled with MS-5975) and NIST-MS library. GC-MS analysis of T. subulata plant leaf extract, revealed the existence of the GC-MS chromatogram of the major peaks presented in methanolic extract like Methyl 8,11,14-heptadecatrienoate (23.244%), Pentadecanoic acid, 14-methyl-,methyl ester (8.654%), n-Hexadecanoic acid (8.654%), 4H-Pyran4-one, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl (6.598%), 1b,4a-Epoxy-2H-cyclopenta[3,4] cyclopropa[8,9]cycloundec[1,2-b] oxiren-5(1aH)-one(5.400%), 3,7,11,15-Tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1- ol(5.400%), etc. From this study it is obvious that T. subulata leaf extract contains many biologically active compounds and also it gives a detailed insight about the phytochemical profile which could be exploited for the development of plant based drug.

The study was designed to evaluate the phytoconstituents present in the methanolic extract of aerial parts of Abelmoschus moschatus. The qualitative phytochemical screening of different extracts of aerial parts revealed the presence of some bioactive compounds. GC – MS analysis was performed using Shimadzu Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (Model Number: QP2010S) instrument. GC-MS detection of phytoconstituents was done by computer evaluation of mass spectra of samples through National Institute Standard and Technology (NIST II) and WILEY 8 library. GC – MS analysis detected the presence of 14 compounds. GC – MS profile of the methanolic extract revealed the presence of megastigmatrienone, phytol, loliolide, farnesyl acetate, methyl linoleates, gamma-sitosterol, cis, cis, cis-7,10,13-Hexadecatrienal, thymine, pyranone, coumarin, 2 – methoxy 4 – vinyl phenol, guanosine, chinasaure and 3- cyclopentyl propionic acid 2 dimethyl aminoethyl ester. The current study suggests that methanolic extracts of aerial parts of Abelmoschus moschatus contain phytoconstituents with antioxidant and cytoprotective activity. The study results will pave a way for the production of therapeutic agents which can be used for the treatment of various diseases.

Copper oxide nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using the aqueous leaf extracts of Leucas aspera and Morinda tinctoria plant material with copper sulfate (CuSO4.5H2O) as the precursor. The crystalline nature and morphology of the synthesized sample were identified using XRD and SEM analytical instrumentation and found that the crystal was in the monoclinic phase, and the average particle size was estimated as 30.32nm and 18.72nm for both the samples. The functional groups were identified using FTIR spectroscopy, and the strong absorption peak at 620 cm-1 and 615cm-1 confirms the presence of Cu-O vibration. The optical bandgap of the plant leaf extract mediated CuO particles was calculated based on the results obtained from UV-Vis spectroscopy and found that the value of the energy gap is 5.6eV and 3.16eV. The antibacterial activity of plant samples was carried out by the disc diffusion method. The test compounds' concentrations were taken in DMSO and used in the concentration of 500 µg and 1000 µg /disc. The zone of inhibition formed by the prepared CuO nanoparticles was good and compared with Amikacin's standard value. The study reports the plant leaf extract mediated CuO nanoparticles might find suitable application in the field of nanotechnology.

Objective: The objective of the study was to perform phytochemical screening, and evaluate the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm activities of Sauropus androgynus leaf extract against pathogenic organisms. Methods: Sauropus androgynus leaves were shade dried, powdered, and extracted by Soxhlet hot extraction procedure using ethanol or methanol. The aqueous extract was prepared using a rotary shaker. The qualitative phytochemical screening was carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopic (GC-MS) analysis and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The antioxidant activity of plant extracts was estimated by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-free radical scavenging assay. Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of extracts against various pathogens was performed using serial microdilution assay and microtiter plate method, respectively. Results: Preliminary phytochemical analysis showed the presence of compounds such as tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenols. GC-MS studies also revealed the presence of biologically active compounds. Methanolic extract of S. androgynus showed higher DPPH Scavenging activity compared to other extracts. All the extracts were able to inhibit both bacterial growth and biofilm production; however, the methanolic extract showed the highest antibiofilm activity. Conclusion: S. androgynus plant extracts possess significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm activity.

Physalis minima a medicinally important plant of the family Solanaceae has been screened for its anticancer activity. The results of preliminary phytochemical screening of the leaf extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, steroids, cardiac glycosides, reducing sugars and terpenoids. Determination of total phenolic contents revealed that methanolic extract showed 78.3 mg/g of phenolic compounds. Evaluation of total flavonoid content showed 61.3 mg/g of flavonoid. It was found that the % viability of HeLa cell line & Hep2 cell line are 80% & 71.8% respectively. The percentage of growth inhibition of methanolic extract in SRB assay was found to be increase with increasing concentration against both HeLa and Hep2cell lines (68 and 58% respectively). The methanolic extract showed the strongest growth inhibitory effect on both HeLa and Hep2 cell lines (85 and 73% respectively) in MTT assay. Flavonoids have been isolated and purified from the methanolic leaf extract.

Present study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition and biological activity for methanolic extract of Bauhinia tomentosa (Linn.) leaves grown in Western Ghats region of South India. The preliminary phytochemical screening tests revealed the presence of steroids, alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, glycosides and phenolic compounds in the leaf extract. A total of 19 compounds were identified through gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis of methanolic extract of B. tomentosa. The major compounds identified were phytol (23.96%), n-hexadecanoic acid (11.62%), squalene (8.85%) and the minor compounds are trans-bis(2-methylpropyl)-4,6-dioxane(0.13%), dihydro-cis-α-copaene-8-ol (0.14%), tetradecanoic acid (0.81%), respectively. Antibacterial activity of the extract showed the zone of inhibition 18 mm at 200 μg/mL against S. aureus, followed by 15 and 16 mm against S. anginosus, K. pneumoniae at 200 μg/mL, respectively. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of B. tomentosa leaves showed the maximum IC50 value with 75.07 % of scavenging activity at the concentration of 5 μg/mL.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is the main concern worldwide to combat infectious. Over the years studies on leaf extracts Tinospora cordifolia have demonstrated the potent role its antibacterial property. The current study is an attempt to test its antibacterial property against Escherichia coli cell division. Material and methods: Phytochemical screening assay of T. cordifolia leaf extract was done using standard procedure and the results showed the presence of alkaloid, carbohydrate, terpenoid, steroid, tannin, amino acid, flavonoid and glycoside components. Results: HPLC analysis revealed the presence of berberine in T. cordifolia leaf extract. Further E. coli cells were treated with berberine to study its efficacy in inhibiting cell division. Antibacterial assay was performed by using disc diffusion method. Conclusion: Among aqueous, methanolic, ethanolic, chloroform, hexane and acetone extract only methanolic extract showed zone of inhibition.

Objective: In the present study is investigated of phytochemicals and antioxidant activities of the leaf extracts from Meliosma simplicifolia (L.). Methods: The seaweed sample was subjected to extraction with solvents of different polarities (hot water, methanol, acetone, chloroform, and petroleum ether) and screened for phytochemicals according to standard methods. The ability of the plant extract to act as hydrogen/electrons donor or scavenger of radicals was determined by in vitro antioxidant assays using 2,2-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radical (DPPH) scavenging, reducing power assay, and superoxide radical (O2•) scavenging activity. The ICPMS and GC-MS analysis of the methanol leaf extract of M. simplicifolia was revealed the presence of antibacterial. Results: Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of Preliminary metabolites Quantitative studies of estimated phenol, flavonoid and tannin, as for the methanol extract of stem showed the highest content of phenolic compounds (40.71±0.94 GAE mg/100). Antioxidant activities were concluded the estimation M. simplicifolia leaf for as followed the studies. In leaf the highest DPPH scavenging activity (132.3 μg/ml), ICP-MS analysis of the leaf extract showed the presence minerals such as Mg, Fe, Cu, Na, and Zn in excess. The leaf extract of the plant was also tested for its antibacterial activity and results confirmed that it has potential activity. Conclusion: The preliminary studies in the methanol extract of the leaf of M. simplicifolia are suggestive of the antibacterial potentials of the methanol extract of leaves of M. simplicifolia.
